  • Lindis Pass Historic Hotel Campsite is my favourite freedom camp. The land is part of DOC’s Nine Mile Historic Reserve, located in Lindis Pass, Otago.
You don’t need to have a certified self-contained vehicle to stay at this freedom camp, so staying in tents is fine here. A long drop toilet has been provided for hikers, cyclists, and those staying in tents.
Access to this freedom camp is somewhat difficult, along a narrow dirt track that is 6km long with potholes and rocks. It's more suitable for 4WD vehicles. I made a separate video about the road showing my dashcam driving footage, so you can see the road for yourself: • Driving to Lindis Pass...
As this site has no mobile phone reception or internet signal, and it is down a narrow dirt track, I've listed some safety precautions in this video and rules to follow. This site is probably best suited to experienced campers, as there are a number of hazards (the river, cows etc), and emergency vehicles will have a hard time getting down this road if you have an accident, such as a fire caused by cooking getting out of control.
Thanks Department of Conservation for this great freedom camping site.

Thank you :) We pay for these parks with our taxpayer money, so it would be great to see more Kiwis getting out and enjoying them. I think the problem is that most people here just don't know about these awesome parks, where they can stay in tents or caravans without paying a nightly fee. There are never any sign posts for these places.

I hope you have a wonderful New Year :) Lindis Pass Historic Hotel is a wonderful site to visit. I just really hope the tourists don't try to take budget 2 wheel drive vehicles down that road or they'll get stuck and block other campers in.

      I know :(
First the flood ruins his gold panning patch and then Air NZ flies him into a mountain. At least he was an old man when he died in the plane crash, but it's still awful what happened to Wattie. I think he did a great job building that concrete hut by himself.

@@caravanlifenz I heard it was originally a two story house with in door plumbing...but it fail down in a earth quake so he ended up living in the garden shed... that's how he got the nickname "bad luck wattie"...not sure that's true though!!.😂😂😂💕🇳🇿

The DOC sign at the front says the hut he built was just the little concrete and stone hut in my photos. He came home from the war and just wanted a little hut where he had peace and quiet, so he was lucky to have survived the war without injuries. That round shaped room with the concrete chute leading to the river was where he tipped his waste, so it looked like he spent a long time planning and building those extra rooms.

I love that location. It's a difficult road, but worth it to see the ruins :)

I’ve never stayed here mainly due to the road in. It certainly a nice spot.

It's so beautiful there, but that road is so narrow with a cliff edge on one side. I'm actually surprised DOC is allowing caravans and motorhomes to even go there. It would be fine if a sign stated you could only use the one-way road to leave the park in the morning and arrive in the afternoon, but there is nothing there explaining that sort of common sense to people. People don't know how bad the road is until they get there.
