  • I messed up this morning trying to get to a spot in the dark that I had only traveled to in the daytime. I got hot and sweaty and broke one of the Cardinal Rules or being outdoors when it's cold.
“Cardinal Rule” refers to the most fundamental and important principles or rules that must always be followed. The word “cardinal” originates from the Latin word cardinalis, meaning “of principal importance” or “serving as a hinge.”
Hunting in cold weather requires specific precautions to ensure safety and success. Below are some “Cardinal Rules” of hunting in cold weather. This is by no means a comprehensive list either.
    1. Dress in Layers
    • Wear multiple layers to trap body heat and allow for flexibility as temperatures change.
    • Use moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers (like fleece or down), and a windproof, waterproof outer layer.
    • Avoid cotton as it retains moisture and can lead to hypothermia.
    2. Protect Your Extremities
    • Wear insulated gloves, hats, and thermal socks to protect fingers, toes, and ears, which are more prone to frostbite.
    • Use hand and toe warmers for additional warmth.
    3. Stay Dry
    • Avoid sweating as wet clothing can cause your body temperature to drop rapidly.
    • Use breathable yet waterproof gear to stay protected from snow or rain.
    4. Keep Hydrated and Eat Well
    • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, even in cold weather.
    • Pack high-energy snacks (like nuts, jerky, or trail mix) to maintain energy levels.
    5. Know the Signs of Hypothermia and Frostbite
    • Be aware of early symptoms like shivering, numbness, confusion, or tingling in extremities.
    • If these symptoms occur, seek shelter, warm up, and address the issue immediately.
    6. Plan and Know Your Location
    • Inform someone of your hunting location and expected return time.
    • Carry a detailed map, compass, or GPS to avoid getting lost in harsh conditions.
    7. Carry Emergency Supplies
    • Pack essentials like fire-starting tools, an emergency blanket, first-aid kit, and extra food.
    • Include a backup power source for your devices.
    8. Monitor Weather Conditions
    • Check the weather forecast before heading out and be prepared for sudden changes.
    • Avoid hunting during severe weather like blizzards or extreme cold.
