Wow. I'm impressed. This proves the US Army is smarter than we all thought. I depend on the "Huntmaster" or the knife that can do everything I need it to do. But for SHTF purposes I think I'm going to get one of these. I never met a knife I didn't like. They are all my friends. But this one is special.
Just caught up with this one on the Army Trekker. You can customise the scales to accept the tweezers and the toothpick, or Firefly (small ferro rod). The slots are already moulded inside the scales you just need to cut the notch to site the tools.
I was in the ARMY from 85-94. while I was active duty, I carried 2 leatherman PSTs, ( the only one available at the time, but we loved them) now I carry a Leatherman Wave (gen 1, no bit kit) and a surge. when I first got to basic, the DI's strongly suggested we get a leatherman at the PX while we were getting our hygiene kits. but after an incident where if we had not had 2 guys with them, most of us started carrying 2, because there are times you need to hold both ends of something to get it fixed.
Right--so I have a strong German-made mini-adjustable spanner which I carry with my Leatherman Surge just for spinning bolts. A major flaw, not being able to grab the other side of a bolt or needing a second strong hand for whatever. But a small wrench or pliers will do. and sheaths can be adjusted to accommodate.
@@israelipiper Finally someone who thinks like me! A 4" adjustable "Crescent" wrench can be modified fairly easily to turn a 17mm fastener with all the strength your hand can give, and can be opened up to fit 19mm (3/4") with reduced strength. Mine slips into my Gerber multi-tool pouch as if it was made to be there and it has saved the day (or at least lots of time) many times over. It practically doubles the usefulness of your multitool and allows you to turn much tighter fasteners than it can. Turned on end with something through the handle it's like a socket set on a small extension. Everyone needs one of these which you'll understand once you try it. The mods are to first cut more 'teeth' in the lower jaw at the top, but not enough to go so far as for the lower jaw to drop out. Access this by taking the screw out of the thumbwheel and it all falls apart. May require a small diamond-wheel grinder to cut the teeth but a hacksaw and needle files sometimes work based on the hardness. Once you reach the limit there, remove material from the jaw faces (any grinder will do this) being sure to maintain them parallel until you get the opening size you want. As made, these usually can't get up to 5/8"(16mm) which limits them severely, but the modified opening doubles their usefulness. Practice on a cheapie if you don't have metal-working skills remembering to keep the metal cool while grinding.
Mine for about 25 years now has been the Victorinox Explorer. It's cleaned fish and even repaired ambulances, FM military radios, and sights on M1A1 tanks
Great video, James, as always. Thanks for the kind words and the shout-out! The knife is available for civilian sales through Joe, as you listed. That knife is my EDC. I really love it.
Have a condor double mag pouch, one pouch has my one hand trekker, pocket wrench 2, ferro rod and a speedy sharp, the other pouch has my Leatherman skeletool , Leatherman bit extender, bic lighter, some mechanics wire (about 5ft.) and a Maglite LED solitaire. Pretty much the things that keep me form having to go get a tool for the barn.
edc for last 5 1/2 years and running is the combo of Victorinox Spirit x and the ZT 0300st. everyday work, play, whatever. the Trekker and their variants are a fine choice if you could pick only one "knife".
Officier Suisse, found on counter at the Marine store where I worked 35 yrs ago, someone used it to cut a chunk of line and left it, carried it everyday since...
Great Video and I'm happy to see the Military is starting to use these knives. For myself I have been carrying the German Army version as well as the Victorinox Spirit X for years. They do what I need them to do.
i love it.when i was to the army i had swisschamp.the most used tools was scissors, can opener, saw, flat head screwdriver(as mini pry bar also),also i used the toothpick because was difficult many times to find time to clean my teeth after lunch.
I EDC a black anodized Leatherman Wave with the double bit kit and extension in a nylon sheath. I have the extension in one of the side loops on the sheath and a Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel in the other side loop. It has all the tools I need, plus more.
As far as I know, a guy ordered these from Victorinox, and they made them, but the US Military did not pick up the contract with the guy to buy these. So they are not standard issue knives of the US Military.
This is also the actual issue utility knife of the Swiss military. Dutch and German too. Singapore and Norway. A few more. But many use the Trekker or have it available in base stores.
Great job, James! I carried my OHT during my one term in the State Guard, as well as a Classic stowed in a mending kit. They worked well for everything I needed during training weekends and hurricane season deployments. That was ten years ago, and I still carry that OHT, even tho I also have the Swiss Soldier and NS versions. I think it's a great all-around outdoors pocketknife.
Hey Junkyard Fox..i am from Switzerland and the swiss army have this Knife to! Its a beautiful Knife!! Locks exact like the U.S one without the black color on the tools
We use this knife also in the netherlands defense. But not the black blade and tools. Love this us version. My EDC tool is the Leatherman charge and all black OHT
I don't know if they make it anymore you should look for the one-handed Forester from victorinox Swiss army it's just like the tracker there's only two difference it has a straight edge blade for easy sharpening and instead of the Phillips screwdriver on the back it has a corkscrew
Although I have several SWAKs, and I keep one on my Keychain, I just keep coming back to my old Leatherman Fuse. No Saw Blade, but I'm in an Urban Environment 98% of my Life. But I wish I had that Blade you just showed back when I was in the Navy in the 70s/80s! Take Care.
I grew that the Victorinox is still a viable option. I really wanted one of the US models when I first saw it but due to cost and availability I never got one. I literally for this model yesterday online for 69.99 and didn’t hesitate. Can’t wait for it to arrive. Great 👍.
Thank God I don't need to buy another one - already have one standard and a one handed model, both non-serrated! I bought because of your mention (I also have a couple of other Victorinox)
I have the Swiss Soldier Version, same as the US and German just no markings, have ha the Trekker, but now carry the RangerGrip it’s slightly larger than the Trekker model. Lately for the past month or so I’ve been carrying the Leatherman signal
My EDC is a Leatherman Wave and /or Surge in my pack and a Victorinox Pioneer in my pocket. Would love this new one, but for the half and half main blade. Still cool though
I EDC a Swiss Huntsman, carried in a slip pouch with a full size Case CV Trapper. In my "Leaving The Property bag" a Gerber 600 rides along with a few other items, lol!
First Comment! Win! I've had a variety of multi-tools and knives. For me my EDC has always fallen back to my Victorinox Officier Suisse with a TEC Pocket clip to keep it vertical in my pocket. I can't stand it when something like a Swiss army knife falls horizontal in my pocket. When I go outdoors in the woods of the Hill Country of Texas, that's a different story.
Totally agree with you. If I'm outside or doing some kind of work I too would use a sheath and put it on my belt. In the office or just out and about pocket knives are in my pocket.
My EDC is the Vic Out rider sak. Pretty much the same as the Trekker, but with scissors an corkscrew. After watching Free America review, I did some research on it. Not cheap. If I were going to spend the money, I'd get the Victorinox Rangerwood. Biggest blade and saw of any other Vic.
The older spear point trek is my constant edc it has done so many tasks daily in a urban environment that it has earned it's place many times over. As a survival camp tool it has prepared food, traps and triggers camp crafts and tools . I think I only paid $29.99 for it years ago at Smokey mountain knife works love this knife.
Current soldier, and I hate to burst your bubble, but I have never seen that as an issued knife. Gerbers sometimes come in a cleaning kit, or might get ordered for toys deploying, but that's it. I personally use a Leatherman Rebar while at work.
Just got one on Ebay for $90. Was super lucky though, nobody bid on it and won. lol Extremely hard to find. Been trying for months now. Love the looks of it, but it's basically a Victorinox Trekker.
A general utility knife benefits from the Victorinox-style serrations. First, they are correctly placed on the front end. Secondly, they are very effective. Not that hard to sharpen, either, contrary to popular comment. A fine round diamond file. It is not a combat knife, so the serrations are really a good thing for rope, food, cloth, etc.
My favorite is the Victorinox field master. I have two or three leathermans and although they are a great tool, they are heavy and bulky, so I end up not carrying them much.
Not bad at all! But for me it's missing one item: scissors. Sometimes I use them more than any other tool. Maybe add it, take out one of the openers, and change the other to a combo-opener a la Leatherman.
Custom made lm wave turned into a mini surge. Has an s35vn blade larger scissors. The heavy duty plier head with replaceable wire cutters and a few other options not on the wave.
I would only buy this knife if it was for a collection. There are too many 111mm Swiss knives that DON'T have a serrated blade. The 130mm knives like the RangerGrip 79 have a longer, stronger saw....that makes a big difference in actual sawing.
The knife is exactly the same as the one issued to Swiss army troops, it is available to buy from the manufacture, it is not a go to combat knife but a utility knife for use in camp, I have at least three in different locations, the black colouring of the tools blades and other pieces was taken from a special limited edition issued to Italian force ( I have a set which was issued), this was aimed at the US forces as they where bought by individuals and filtered down as a good tool, so seems again something like Swiss Army knives have been put into service, FYI the original can be bought online and shipped to the USA from any supplier in Europe, .
looks like a cool knife but better with tweezers and toothpick .my edc for the last 20 years leatherman wave recently added streamlight and ferro rod to sheath and bit set love it
Thanks for liking my comment! Really, I find your videos very educational, and realistic. The editing is movie quality bro. I'm hoping since you saw my comment, you're uploading a new vid? :)
One of my favorites in my collection, I have the German army version. Im also not mil, I like to edc it a lot. Especially goes in my bag if I'm gonna be in woods or near the woods.
My buddy's son is currently in the Army he can't get them anywhere they're not in the system I found them on a website called Spartan and ordered 2 (one for him)
I was just out in the Southwest for the first time ever (Tucson, AZ) and I used my one-handed Trekker a few times. I was really glad I had the tweezers when I brushed my leg up against a prickly pear pad. Ouch! I would miss them on the US knife. I used the saw to cut a dead yucca stalk, and the knife to cut some cordage to make a key keeper.
nice! i have to agree, those tweezers really come in handy. molly from the youtube show 'food tripping with molly' filmed a video wtih me last year and she got her hands covered in cactus thorns, saved the day when i equipped the tweezers lol
James - Been a sub for a while now and I really enjoy the content, commentary, and editing of your videos. Combine that with the music of Cuervo Negro and it's always impressive. Appreciate all you do for those of us that like to get our boots dirty!
At least here in Finland they are civilian legal. I bought this as my military multitool. ( I'm inActive reserve, Finnish defence force thing). I carry Victorinox soldiers knife, glock m78 and a Leatherman kick when in training. Finnish puukko or leuku are better in a civilian trecking etc, but they lack features that one needs in army.
Hey James, James here. I wanted to stop by and let you know I enjoy your videos. Informative, practical and super cool Cuervo Negro music! I like the 3 part Operation Survival videos. You know, with the exception of the shelter built in Operation Survival and this video, how about more videos on shelters in the desert? Being as hot as it is out there, I’d like to think some shade shelters in the desert would be essential for survival and would be nice to see. Thanks.
I need one of these. Ever since we did the Trekker review for The Outdoor Arena I've been wanting one. This military look is perfect. Do you know how much they cost for civilians?
@@joetheknifeguy2092 WTF? A Trekker goes for $49.99 from anyone of a 100 different sellers. So, if I'm willing to give up the Trekker's tweezers and toothpick, I can have an anodized military version for $89.99? What am I missing? Is solid gold used in the anodation process?
..............Great production on this video, James............ That says a lot for the quality of Victorinox that two armies have chosen it for their standard issue...... As for myself, my for sure EDC is the one -hand Trekker with non-serrated blade...in another pocket I carry a Case yellow handle Stockman or Trapper in carbon steel......I always wear a Morakniv Companion in military green for a neck knife...........Would carry more but I don't want to sink if I fall in a puddle.................Keep up the good vids..........need more food prep and Cuervo Negro.....
Nah, the Victorinox blade steel is not that good. I have the standard one and the cutting edge is just one sided and creases early if you use it properly. I would rather Use US, Italian, German, Scandinavian and French knives than that Swiss crap.
I'm a high voltage linesman I carry the leathman wave plus for my multi tool however I carry a variety of blades with me at pretty much all times , I'm kinda a knife guy I enjoy a very sharp and quality steel blade
Love the Swiss product, I carry an explorer . Current arguments ask, "If America gets into a conflict and we rely on foreign products, do we put our troops in jeopardy while America retools and supplies ????? 💪🏻💪🏻
The omission of the tweezers and toothpick in the military versions tells me the procurement mindset is still strange. What do you think of the Victorinox Hercules vs the Rangergrip 78 or 178 knives? I am really torn between the two. Been carrying a Swiss Champ for years in the truck and car camping, but as I age I find ounces really do count and there are a ton of tools in the Cnamp that might get used day to day in civilization that never get used in the wild (by me anyway). My EDC for the last 30? at least years has been a Swiss MiniChamp. Cannot count the number of times that has opened computers, appliances, assembled toys, etc. Small, light and extremely useful MT that pre-dates the MT craze. I have two vehicles, two sets of keys and two MiniChamps. Obviously I am not a tradesman, who would use the larger and more extensive set of tools on say, The SwissTool Spectre. However, for me and my real world experience, the MiniChamp is the EDC king.
i love me some swiss army knives. my trekker has been on my hip every single day for the last 6 years. as for the vic hercules, it jsut seems to bulky to carry or to utilize, i personaly would prefer a more streamlined, more focused SAK like the rangergrips, which both look the same, just diffrent colors, if im not mistaken.
thsi one pack is slightly diffrent, its a prototype tha malcolm made. i dont own the day ruck but ive always enjoyed hidden woodsman gear, im sure its a superb pack
@@clarky4492 on the victorinox website I have seen the "trailmaster" it's not quite like this knife, but i think it's similar enough and it has a traditional pocket knife blade
Good review. I would have liked to have had that for the exact purpose when I was in the Marines (1976-1980). In my day, I carried an SAK camper in a belt pouch. Now days, it is in the pocket. Are you in Northern New Mexico or Arizona? Thanks, from Flagstaff.

One of my favorites in my collection, I have the German army version. Im also not mil, I like to edc it a lot. Especially goes in my bag if I'm gonna be in woods or near the woods.
good review I do have the SAK camper but for my everyday carry my leatherman sidekick
Very cool! I have the old TRekker - love it.
Love your videos keep it up God bless and stay safe
James - Been a sub for a while now and I really enjoy the content, commentary, and editing of your videos. Combine that with the music of Cuervo Negro and it's always impressive. Appreciate all you do for those of us that like to get our boots dirty!
Do you think it's better than the NS Trekker?
i have the treker. edc and love it.
Hey, how about doing an overnighter!?
keep an eye out, il be making a primitive shelter soon, then filming an overnighter after that
Really cool knife but I hate serrations! I wish they would offer a nonserated option for all serated models.
Thanks.
keep an eye out, in a few weeks, ill be making a video on building a primitive shelter
I need one of these. Ever since we did the Trekker review for The Outdoor Arena I've been wanting one. This military look is perfect. Do you know how much they cost for civilians?
This is Joe the knife guy $89.99 plus shipping jtraurig@verizon.net this my projet
JOE THE KNIFE GUY or try the victorinox outrider. (The new model with liner lock!!) Great tool!
I've worn the same knife around my neck for 30 years
..............Great production on this video, James............ That says a lot for the quality of Victorinox that two armies have chosen it for their standard issue...... As for myself, my for sure EDC is the one -hand Trekker with non-serrated blade...in another pocket I carry a Case yellow handle Stockman or Trapper in carbon steel......I always wear a Morakniv Companion in military green for a neck knife...........Would carry more but I don't want to sink if I fall in a puddle.................Keep up the good vids..........need more food prep and Cuervo Negro.....
excellent setup, my friend, thanks for watching!
More than two armies. And the Army of Switzerland issues the non-blacked version officially to all recruits.
the excessive use of dots is gay.
Nah, the Victorinox blade steel is not that good. I have the standard one and the cutting edge is just one sided and creases early if you use it properly. I would rather Use US, Italian, German, Scandinavian and French knives than that Swiss crap.
Look at those locks!
Great review! It’s basically a blacked out version of the Victorinox hunter.
except the hunter has a gut hook, no?
I'm a high voltage linesman I carry the leathman wave plus for my multi tool however I carry a variety of blades with me at pretty much all times , I'm kinda a knife guy I enjoy a very sharp and quality steel blade
I'd really like to see a kabar 1217 review.
Thank you,good review.
I have to have this knife. Is there no way for a civilian to get it?
Love the Swiss product, I carry an explorer . Current arguments ask, "If America gets into a conflict and we rely on foreign products, do we put our troops in jeopardy while America retools and supplies ????? 💪🏻💪🏻
You was in malcom in the middle?
It s a good knive. Victorinox quality
I really like your hat! The knife is pretty neat too.
Have you ever tired out a leatherman Wave
i actaully havent. i own the leatherman wingman but to be honest, i rarely use it.
Swiss Army Knife One Hand , but black coated. Blade play up-down ?
from my experience, theres always a small amount of up and down play on victorinox knives, though the blades are excellent.
New theme to this video! I love it! Also James, what do you think of the DayRuck? I'm thinking of getting it.
thsi one pack is slightly diffrent, its a prototype tha malcolm made. i dont own the day ruck but ive always enjoyed hidden woodsman gear, im sure its a superb pack
A prototype is cooler than the real thing! That means it's most likely one of a kind.
Is there a non serrated version?
to the best of my knowledge, not currently
I wanted to know that too
@@clarky4492 on the victorinox website I have seen the "trailmaster" it's not quite like this knife, but i think it's similar enough and it has a traditional pocket knife blade
Another good one young man! Boy, you picked that carcass clean!🤣
Good review. I would have liked to have had that for the exact purpose when I was in the Marines (1976-1980). In my day, I carried an SAK camper in a belt pouch. Now days, it is in the pocket. Are you in Northern New Mexico or Arizona? Thanks, from Flagstaff.
I HAVE NEW SOLDIER US, FANTASTIC BLADE, BEAUTIFUL, VITORINOX THE BEST.
