If it wasn't for the monkey, this would of been the worse tetris game I've seen.

You know, the music and general atmosphere with those pics from various places and brick colors really reminds me of a Tetris released for Mega Drive I used to play as a kid.
I wonder if this is a port of that game or something...

It's heavily based on/inspired by it. Back in the early days of Tetris escaping the Soviet Union, the rights were split among platforms and territories. The Western European computer rights went to Mirrorsoft, while the North American computer rights went to their sister company Spectrum Holobyte. Atari Games (the arcade maker, who were a separate company from Atari Corp, the console maker, by that point) got the arcade rights, and released a machine in North America. Bullet-Proof Software got the Japanese home computer rights, which they thought also included the Famicom, but turns out didn't. Sega sublicensed the Japanese arcade rights from Atari Games, and their arcade machine actually was the first version released in Japan, beating BPS's versions by a few weeks. Handheld rights were still up for grabs, and BPS boss Henk Rogers went to Moscow without a proper visa to try to secure them so Nintendo could include it with the launch of the Game Boy, which he did despite the fact that he was lucky they didn't throw him in jail. (Seriously, Henk Rogers has big brass nads.) Probably helped quite a bit that when he met Tetris creator Alexi Pajitnov the two of them became like instant best friends, and remain close to this day.
That's when Henk found out the condole rights had actually not been licensed out properly, and that they were still available. That lead to Nintendo getting exclusive worldwide console rights for seven years. BPS and Nintendo cross-licensed each other, so Nintendo got their Game Boy pack-in (one of the best business decisions ever) and BPS didn't have to pull their Famicom version (which is different from the version Nintendo released in the West for the NES). It's a very dramatic story. So much so that they're making a movie of it, which is coming out soon. Seriously.
Anyway, Sega had planned to release a Mega Drive version closely based on their arcade version as well, and it was finished and getting ready to ship, However, when Nintendo got the exclusive console rights, Sega had to cancel the Mega Drive version. It was so last-minute that a small number of cartridges had actually already been made, which were scrapped. Except for the perhaps one dozen that somehow survived. They're worth a fortune due to their rarity. (The whole thing also lead to Atari Games' home division Tengen having to pull their non-Nintendo-licensed NES version, which had managed to sell a couple hundred thousand copies in the month it was on sale, making it also somewhat rare, though nowhere near as rare as the Mega Drive version.)
So how did you play it? Well, the Mega Drive version did get out in some fashion and has been widely bootlegged, appearing frequently on multi-game carts and other not-so-legit releases. You probably played one of those. I know I have.
Anyway, after Nintendo's exclusive rights expired in 1996, BPS picked up the console rights as well and put out new versions for all the consoles of the day. That included this version for the Saturn, which is strongly modeled after Sega's original arcade version, including many elements specific to that version such as the color scheme of the pieces, the rotation mechanics, the scoring system, the up-and-down speeds of the levels, the music (which is a remix of the arcade version), and the chimp mascot. It clearly is an enhanced remake. It never saw a western release, in part because the Saturn was a dud, and in part because it came out right around the same time as the home ports of Jaleco's Tetris Plus, which actually also draws quite a bit of inspiration from Sega's original Japanese arcade version in mechanics. So does the Tetris The Grand Master series of arcade games, which began shortly after. Sega themselves made a Dreamcast version that uses the mechanics, as well.
The underlying rights to Tetris eventually reverted to Pajitnov, while Rogers bought out the privatized Soviet bureau that had licensed it, and together they run The Tetris Company. Games licensed by them are supposed to follow a refined Tetris Guideline that includes standardized mechanics evolved from the BPS/Nintendo versions from back in the day, and a consistent color scheme for the pieces (which is more about trademark than anything). But now and then they'll allow a game aimed at the hardcore player that uses an alternate set of mechanics taken from the TGM series, complete with the original Sega color scheme for the tetrominoes.

you did not play tetris on the mega drive, there were only 6 copies of it in existance, you might be thinking of the arcade version

    • @yoshimario

at most it was probably an bootleg (aka not an original)

@@yoshimario I played it on a 8 in 1 cartridge. Not sure if it was an official release, but it could've been since it was a brazillian cartridge, and we get Mega Drive support to this day.

@@yoshimario I just looked it up and "parallel" cartridges are being sold on Mercado Livre (kinda like ebay for LATAM) kinda cheap. So yeah, just like I got my hands on a Mega Drive Ninja Gaiden prototype back then, weird Sega stuff is common here.
