The LARGEST Ancient Fleet Ever: The Mongol Invasion of Japan

- Over 4,000 ships, carrying a combined force of 142,000 hardened Mongol, Chinese, and Korean soldiers and sailors, formed one of the most formidable invasion forces the world had ever witnessed.
Their objective was to annex the land of the rising sun under the vast and ever-growing Mongol Empire. The Japanese, despite their valor and martial prowess, faced an enemy whose vastness and military might seemed almost insurmountable.
But Japan, an island nation with deep spiritual beliefs, was not to be taken so easily. Its people, warriors and commoners alike, braced themselves for the impact, determined to defend their homeland against an unstoppable force.
As the battle drums sounded, something even more powerful was stirring. The world, especially the Mongols, was about to learn that nature sometimes takes sides. For looming on the horizon, just as threatening as the Mongol fleet was a force the Japanese believed to be the breath of the gods: the Divine Wind…
I think it's absolutely insane that this happened not once but actually twice. Both times, massive fleets destroyed by a storm.
I count at least three, the Persian fleet at Thermopile, The Chinese Armada and the Spanish Armada off the Dover coast.
If at first you don't succeed...
The odds of them running into a big storm or hurricane during their invasions were (obviously) pretty high, as storm season was also the time of year to wage war. They gambled and lost, but I don't think the odds of hitting a bad storm or hurricane were astronomically high.
I remember watching a documentary on History Channel about this Mongol invasion force & its complete decimation. They found many ancient anchors from this time period still attached to the seabed. What's amazing was all of them were turned towards one direction, suggesting being at the mercy of one violent & powerful storm or typhoon.
Just imagine strong winds blowing through a field of grass overnight. You wake up in the morning & all you see is the grass flattened the same way all pointing to one direction.
To add to these problems... the Mongol empire was so focused on building ships for this invasion, they devoted everything to it. As a result, many of these ships were only built to inland water and river specifications. Flat and rounded bottoms aren't "seaworthy" vessels. They would've been okay in calm seas, but even a small storm would've reeked havoc on such ships.
There are a lot of errors in this. Kublai's forces couldn't simultaneously challenge the "Yuan Dynasty" because Kublai's forces WERE the Yuan Dynasty. The Dynasty they were actually fighting against were the Southern Song Dynasty.
Ghost of tsushima is best game EVER! 🤩
This was an awesome episode. I know the format is a little unconventional for this channel, but I really liked this dive into a specific period of time in history. Very cool.
When an unstoppable force meets and immovable object
Just proves that Mother Nature is the baddest of them all
Jin saki, did us well

The Mongol Invasions (and its resistance) would be great for a sub-series

I found this video very interesting while I ate my dinner. Thank you very much.
This would be an awesome movie!
An invasion by sea is among the most difficult ways to go... Mongols and Spaniards learned that the hard way, the weather can turn things around and a carefully designed operation can ''sink'' just because it can not be executed to the detail, and then one thing turns to another as as accidents pile up, disaster follows... the ancient Greeks knew that, when they sailed to Troy with a massive fleet, they waited to long for the ''perfect weather'' even sacrifice a lot!... the Allies knew that to when they waited for the right weather to cross the channel... I guess ego plays a role too... wait and pray, pray and sacrifice... don't just plan and execute...
There's a lesson here for China to learn...! The bigger the army, the more vulnerable is at sea...
They've learned that.
I love seeing new content from this channel!🙏🇨🇦
I cannot believe this channel doesn’t have more subscribers. The amount of time that is put in to produce and edit this channel is incredible. Great research and visual aids!!
Thanks!
One word: kamikaze or 'divine wind'
During WW2, the Japanese also waited for the same 'divine wind' to help them defeat the oncoming American invasion force, just like how it helped Japan to topple the much larger Mongol fleet not once but TWICE. As a result, the Japanese really believed they were being protected by a divine power from above. Alas, they waited for something that never came.
My night just became super sweet!!!
Sweet!
Sounds like someone got around to playing Ghosts of Tsushima lol
Divine intervention/ie: the weather also played a factor role in how George Washington and his small tiny army was able to win against large invading British Troops in the late 1700s America.
Japan/America today just wants to be left alone with their anime technology hologram concert Miku Expo2024 and such.
🛸I already know President Biden isn't running 2024.
A king of England HATED US Boston media people.
Fake news was sent everywhere. It started a revolution.
#Boston2024 on X
The Mongols deserve neither honor nor mercy. I am the Ghost...
hear-hear...
neither their descendants the Rus nor the Turks...
Well, I'm sure that the Khan got his answer from the emissaries that he sent to the Japanese a second time when the emissaries' heads came back in a box. 👌👍
I too have played Ghost of Tsushima.
Is this what ghost of Tsushima was referencing? Haven't played it in a grip
It
Was the weather that really helped
At the very beginning of this video did you say $142,000 thousand???
As set up isn't necessary, just jump straight into it.
The weather. Next?????
Ancient or Medieval?
Unless you can perform a hidden flank attack on an island replete with people whose mentality is that of a cornered beast, you will usually fail in your attempt to conquer it.
I believe it is pronounced "Nippon"... just saying...
Damn you mongorians
Lol❤
My shitty wall!

One of my favorite running skits on SP lol.
As someone who practices HEMA and handels swords daily the reverse grip in the thumbnail triggerd me hard lol i sat thinking and acting out the few movements he can do from that position 😂
TLDR; never reverce grip a sword kids, not even once.
unless...
life and death battle is a chaotic place
much that is effective there has no place in sport
and vice-versa
Go the Mongols
Kamikaze
misleading title. should be Mongols vs the sea while Samurai watched...
Why there are sumo wrestlers. Mongol DNA. Protein eaters. Larger, stronger
nope!... no Mongol set foot in Japan... but Mongols, Chinese, and Japanese share common ancestral DNA...
4000 ships caring 142,000 troops is 35.5 troops per ship
Also you forgot to mention how they used MKultra to conquer the moon and modified weather control devices to change mars atmosphere
we know that every Mongol rider used 3 horses, one to ride and two to follow so he could change fresh horses when needed... the Golden Hord never stopped, no rest, no camp, they even slept on the back of their horses, they even ate... so maybe they were carrying their horses too?
You say 142000 and yet the headline says 1.4mil
Umm how were KAMIKAZES threatened during WW2??? America DESTROYED Japan bcuz of Pearl Harbor, they could a chose a diff fate!!!
What number is 1400,000 by chance?
