FANTASTIC! Watched Wendell race at Darlington many times. Met him in the pits after one Southern 500. That was when the fans could go down in the pits after a race. Wendell was very gracious and made an impression. My cousins and I always cheered him on after that.

I was privileged to watch him race at Bristol in the 60s. At that time I was a teenager and didn’t know a lot about Wendell but I wanted him to win so bad. I was seated where I could see the pits and while all the other pit crews were using air wrenches Wendell’s crew were using your typical lug wrenches. At that moment I started rooting for Wendell and truthfully I can’t remember how he finished that day but I continued to cheer for him as long as he raced. It is safe to say “there will never be another driver like Mr. Scott.
Man, watching this video had me tears. I like to think of me being tough, but I had tears rolling down from start to end. It also makes me angry as hell knowing how people treated this man and for him not t receive his trophy initial years after his death. I don’t care if people say “We’ve come along way since then”, it doesn’t matter. I remember watching his movie “Greased Lightning” with Richard Pryor when I was a kid and I loved it! Im glad this filled in all the gaps and corrected any embellishments. The first race I ever watched was the 1976 Daytona 500 and thats where I began to love racing. That being said Wendells story cemented it and turned it to a passion. Thank you Wendell Scott. Wendell Scott wasn't the first or most successful black racing driver however. Dewey Gatson (a.k.a. Rajo Jack) was a well respected driver who won many races around the country during the 1930's-1940's.

Wendell Scott. Name alone is overwhelming. 'Cause I was born in '63. No cell phones when I was growing up. My oldest Brother Grady is so into performance, I tagged along. Seeing guys working on their own cars/racing. That'what I saw. Loved all that saw(except wrecks). Racing resides in my blood. Hooked from age 5. So glad. I just couldn't imagine life without. It was normal 4 me at a stoplight with my brother hearing a car with a "HARD HITTIN' CAM" pull beside. "SUCH A SYMPHONY" of "Dynamic Music."

I always admired Wendell for having so much heart to try & make it in a sport near & dear the white southerners hearts. He was just as much Southern as they were with an equal tenacity. This choked me up, and what's really weird is I didn't turn 9 until the end of 1977 so I was 8 when I saw the movie Greased Lightening? with Richard Pryor about Wendall Scott, but unlike many movies I saw way back and barely remember I still remember that movie and I haven't seen it since. I remember Prior getting handed a card with a black smudge simulating him, and I remember how he kept a change jar and that was his savings. Growing up in the South , in Appalachia I was in shock when I joined the military and realized black folks my age didn’t know about Mr. Wendell. I’m so glad they are learning now, and I hope to see more diversity of really great drivers in NASCAR. We all country, and we all God children

Wow, that is so sad that he never got his trophy. Glad to see it was finally given to his family though. One of the greatest moments of my life was getting to meet one of the Tuskegee Airmen the day after the Indy 500. The gentleman was either 90 or 91 and had always wanted to attend the race, and that was the first year he was able to do so. I've been very fortunate to do more than my fair share of cool things, but that is one morning that I hope I never forget.

I'm a white middle class 49 yr old conservative that saw Greased Lightening at the movies, 1977? I also believe that most of this PC crap is just completely stupid. That said, I am 100% behind any one of any color that wants to make a name for his or herself, and to see stuff from the US's "not so distant past", like Wendell not getting the checkered flag or initial win in 1963 because they did not want to showcase a black man winning a race just makes me want to puke. Like the famous driver Darrell Waltrip say's in this documentary, that would just crush even the toughest of individuals. Hat's off to you Wendell, you are an inspiration to us all! I went through a lot of adversity in my life and am proud of how I handled most of it, and I consider myself a pretty tough character, but I don't have anywhere near enough to go through what Wendell did. This is not baseball or football, this is southern white bread stock car racing of the 50s and 60s. Now that's balls!

I became a Wendell Scott fan when I saw the Richard Pryor movie (Greased Lightning) at the age of 9. The history of Wendell Scott was one of my inspirations that made do research into Black history as well as being one of the influences in my life that motivated me to be unbreakable.
He lived 5 hoses down the street from my wife's uncle in Danville Va. We would be sitting in the living room watching TV an all of a sudden the whole house would start shaking, My wife's uncle would say sounds like Wendell is getting his car ready for the race this weekend. And nobody on the whole damn block was bothered by the noise,just another day. This was 1973 I am not 100 % pos of the year.
My thought as well. He often (maybe always?) bought his cars used from other drivers so he would have been a model year behind. My best guess from historic photos is that he would have been running a '62 Bel Air bubbletop around that time.
I will say this...Stock car driving has came a long way but it has went in the wrong direction. It's not Stock car anymore...the only thing that changed the game over the years was money. The only thing that ties NASCAR to the modern sport is the name. NASCAR always has been a sport that one must be raised and conditioned in by money which is why there weren't that many minorities in this sport before. The older drivers were all given their opportunities by their financial backing. If anything Scott should've been taking donations from the people in his community. Back then would've been a good time to do such a thing being that this was during the time of the Civil Rights Struggle.

I always admired Wendell for having so much heart to try & make it in a sport near & dear the white southerners hearts. He was just as much Southern as they were with an equal tenacity. Being in Richmond wasn't any easier for us,bein from Ohio they wouldn't serve us till thay saw we wasn't leavin. And this was just the Waflle House. They really need to forget that civil war stuff. Everyone concerned with that damn war is long since dust.

This choked me up, and what's really weird is I didn't turn 9 until the end of 1977 so I was 8 when I saw the movie Greased Lightening? with Richard Pryor about Wendall Scott, but unlike many movies I saw way back and barely remember I still remember that movie and I haven't seen it since. I remember Prior getting handed a card with a black smudge simulating him, and I remember how he kept a change jar and that was his savings. Wendall was more than just a great man, he was what this Country is supposed to represent, white or black and NOT what IMO opinion idiots like Al Sharpton that throw hate into the minds of ppl that never had close to living in the adversity of what Wendall went through! R.I.P Mr. Great Man Wendall!

It took them a ridiculous amount of time to treat this guy as another racer, death threats, rejections and everything you could through at a driver to stop him from racing because of his colour. A legend indeed, never quit.

I'm ALWAYS completely angered by crap like this. Mr. Scott had years shaved off his life because of having to endure all this racism and bigotry. This is the single greatest driver to get behind a wheel period. The man should be the damn "face" of this sport today.

Growing up in the South , in Appalachia I was in shock when I joined the military and realized black folks my age didn’t know about Mr. Wendell. I’m so glad they are learning now, and I hope to see more diversity of really great drivers in NASCAR. We all country, and we all God children

Beautiful story of a beautiful family. The barriers Wendell broke at the time were amazing. When you go to a NASCAR race, you see all kinds of people from all walks of life, and everybody treats you like nothing short of family.

One of the greatest moments of my life was getting to meet one of the Tuskegee Airmen the day after the Indy 500. The gentleman was either 90 or 91 and had always wanted to attend the race, and that was the first year he was able to do so. I've been very fortunate to do more than my fair share of cool things, but that is one morning that I hope I never forget.

Can't explain how this makes me feel...today is March 9, 2019 @ 4:00 p.m....my sister told me that Wendell Scott was related to my mothet~1st cousin--which makes him my 2nd cousin...my sister told me about a street in Danville, Va (where my mother was also born and raised~Tanner family)...a street was named after Wendell...the re-enactment of this story has made me cry, laugh...more so~Thank God for the struggles that the strong black man endured...Love y'all--From Florida

I'm a white middle class 49 yr old conservative that saw Greased Lightening at the movies, 1977? I also believe that most of this PC crap is just completely stupid. That said, I am 100% behind any one of any color that wants to make a name for his or herself, and to see stuff from the US's "not so distant past", like Wendell not getting the checkered flag or initial win in 1963 because they did not want to showcase a black man winning a race just makes me want to puke. Like the famous driver Darrell Waltrip say's in this documentary, that would just crush even the toughest of individuals. Hat's off to you Wendell, you are an inspiration to us all! I went through a lot of adversity in my life and am proud of how I handled most of it, and I consider myself a pretty tough character, but I don't have anywhere near enough to go through what Wendell did. This is not baseball or football, this is southern white bread stock car racing of the 50s and 60s. Now that's balls!

I became a Wendell Scott fan when I saw the Richard Pryor movie (Greased Lightning) at the age of 9. The history of Wendell Scott was one of my inspirations that made do research into Black history as well as being one of the influences in my life that motivated me to be unbreakable.
He lived 5 hoses down the street from my wife's uncle in Danville Va. We would be sitting in the living room watching TV an all of a sudden the whole house would start shaking, My wife's uncle would say sounds like Wendell is getting his car ready for the race this weekend. And nobody on the whole damn block was bothered by the noise,just another day. This was 1973 I am not 100 % pos of the year.

My thought as well. He often (maybe always?) bought his cars used from other drivers so he would have been a model year behind. My best guess from historic photos is that he would have been running a '62 Bel Air bubbletop around that time.

I will say this...Stock car driving has came a long way but it has went in the wrong direction. It's not Stock car anymore...the only thing that changed the game over the years was money. The only thing that ties NASCAR to the modern sport is the name. NASCAR always has been a sport that one must be raised and conditioned in by money which is why there weren't that many minorities in this sport before. The older drivers were all given their opportunities by their financial backing. If anything Scott should've been taking donations from the people in his community. Back then would've been a good time to do such a thing being that this was during the time of the Civil Rights Struggle.
