Bridgestone Battlax S23 Tire Test - Cycle News

  • The rise in hypersport tires that can be used for everyday tasks is not surprising. The tires we’re seeing now that can be taken to the track, thrashed and not require tire warmers, stands, etc, while still being capable of doing a cold morning shop run in perfect safety, are getting more numerous by the year.
    The S23 comes to dealer floors in a very busy time with Dunlop’s Q5, Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV, Michelin Power 5, and Continental’s ContiSportAttack 2 all offering exceptional performance at competitive prices.
    Improving on the S22 wasn’t going to be easy for Bridgestone as the S22 was such a great product, and a personal favorite for me, especially the feel of that front tire. KTM even went as far as putting it as OEM fitment for the previous generation 1290 Super Duke in 2020, but have since swapped to Michelin Power Grip GP rubber or the 2024 1390 Super Duke.
    In S23 guise, Bridgestone is claiming five percent higher cornering speed, a one percent faster dry lap time, a three percent shorter wet braking distance and a four percent faster wet lap time. Whether any of the lap time stuff really matters is up to you as this is a sports tire that can go to the track, not a race tire designed for ultimate lap times. However, the braking distances and cornering speeds should be something worth noting.

    2:58 i’m so glad they kept the shape because I would hate to be riding around on the square tires or even worse triangle tires. But seriously my 2023 Yamaha MT 10 has S 22 tires from the factory and I have been very happy with them. In fact when it’s time I will probably go back with the S 23.

    I'm a big fan of the S22s. Plenty of grip for agressive riding in the hills, good tyre life (appox. 6000km), quick turn-in and great feel from the front. A front wears out at about the same time as the rear. I am worried that they sacrificed some feeling or grip on the front (on the road) to achieve the greater durability of the front on track? I hope not. The front s22 definitely wears out faster than comparable tyres like the Pirelli Rosso Corsa 2 and Pirelli Rosso 4 Corsa but it also feels better. If the s22s come down in price or if the s23's are priced higher, then the S22s may be the better choice for the street.

    Nice review & great tyres. Also not too expensive either. I've been using Bridgestone's on & off for years & they're definitely my first choice for great tyres at good prices.

    Great video. I installed some S22 on my do it all Street triple RS and I was pleasantly surprised. I live in Canada and these tires are underrated IMHO. Great grip session after session during my trackday and great front feeling, for a bargain price. (Vs Pirelli or Michelin). Again just my humble opinion, I am not Sylvain Guintoli… lol

      I agree. They’ve been fantastic on my 23 Yamaha MT 10. So much so then I’ll probably go back with either the 22 or 23 when it’s time.

    I’ve ran a few of the s22 on my 22 and 23 s1k and they are awesome tires! They provide great grip and mileage considering the power output of the bmw.

    Her Rennie, thanks for a great review. What Sylvain said about matching tyres and needs makes perfect sense. My Speed Twin 1200 came from the factory with Metzeler Racetec RR but I suspect this was a marketing ploy more than a need. The Sportec M9RR would have made more sense to me, even though I love the turn-in speed of the Racetec.

    • @cyclenews
      @cyclenews  6 місяців тому +3

      I've ridden and raced on Metzelers for years and they're a very good tire. The M9RR's are a great all-round tire but it's hard to say which is the better one between this and the Bridgestones without putting them head to head

    The only downside of the s22 is the wear. The thread is not deep enough and they were at about 2000 miles of hard canyons riding. The Rosso 4 gives more durability but loose on the feel and time to warm up. I most likely will stick with the s22.

      After 8 sets of S22, I will try out the S23 next spring. The S22 is a perfect match for my bike and has given me exemplary performance on the race track as well as on demanding mountain passes. For me, ultimate grip is more important than mileage 😎✌️🏁

    My Gen 3 Hayabusa uses the S22 tire. Would the S23 still be ok for that. Spirited twisty riding & some straight road touring. Or will the S23 be a little too soft for the weight of the Busa. ?

    • @postersm7141
      @postersm7141 5 місяців тому +3

      Well, Suzuki thought the S 22 was a good OEM tire so I can only imagine the 23 would be better seeing as how it’s just a more improved S 22. How do you like the S 22? I have them on my 2023 Yamaha MT 10 and I really like them a lot.

    These reviews are all very well doing them in perfect conditions on a race track but lots of people don't use them like that. What about more normal use like UK roads in changeable conditions on a Sunday morning ride out with your mates.

    • @cyclenews
      @cyclenews  6 місяців тому +3

      Totally agree. Back in the day we used to get a section of the track watered down to test wet braking capabilities. They don't don that anymore despite all the claims about increased wet weather performance, which is a shame.
