have you ever tried a longer lead? I'm not sure what your specific rules make you use but i like giving the dog more leash letting them work the track out. It helps with getting around trees and brush as well because you can drop and pick up the lead.

It was a 12 hr old track. We let him sit over night because hit alittle back
