This is NOT a paid promotion! We are making this video review based on our own personal experience so that anyone interested in purchasing a shelterlogic knows how long it might last in our climate.
Suggestion - UA-cam "Tiny Shiny Home" (search Shelter Logic) used corrugated metal roof panels, screwed to the shelter logic frame, to replace the plastic and turn them into robust, permanent storage. Then they used earth bags for back wall and wood framing for the front wall/door. You folks could use wood for both front and back walls.
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid yea a new tarp every year would sacrifice a $40 tarp to the UV rays and protect the original shelter logic canopy for up to 10 years.
@CrustyAbsconder that's actually a really good idea. I have the same ShelterLogic shed, and I got maybe 3 years before it started leaking from UV damage, and finally, a tree branch went through two sections but didn't damage the framework . I have a big tarp over mine now also, and it's doing fine. I had a tarp on the ground like you did, and I was keeping my zero turn scag mower in it, and my dad started it up and started the mower. That turned into a giant mess when the tarp got sucked up into the blades, and since there are a lot more things in there I had to end up cutting the tarp to get the mower out so the deck could be cleared.
Glad to find your channel! I am from the ADK. Cold Brook was my Great Aunt's home I spent a great deal of time with her. That was the last place I lived in Ny. My education got me a fantastic job in fl. Am I sorry I moved..Maybe? I have had a wonderful life in the ADK, and in Fl.. Mt great Aunt worked at Raquette Lake at one of the great camps I spent a ton of time with her. I loved her so and left one job in Fl to come home to the ADEK to take care of her until she passed..
Welcome! When we moved here from Long Island two of our kids moved to Florida and one moved to California and they love where they are. We just can’t leave the mountains though…so we understand your memories. There’s just something here that’s not like anywhere else😊
Im glad the shelter logic survived long enough to protect the waterproofing material. Im sure the frame won't go to waste. There are so many options. Honestly, this is a great video on the life of most potable shelters in the homeowners market.
Thank you! We are happy it made it as long as it did...and we are definitely planning to use the frame, just trying to figure out the most economical, but sustainable way! More to come :-)
I had a high quality tarp professionally made for my uncle's shelter. It cost ~$700 but it has lasted over 15 years and is still in good condition. A good investment in the long run and no messing around with patching and multiple tarps.
That is a great idea! We just purchased some very inexpensive used metal roofing panels that we are hoping to get on ours.... if only it would stop snowing!
Thanks for a quality "real life" video. I'm considering a tent shed and this is helpful. I'm fortunate that I already have two very heavy duty 8'x22' tarps and think I will cover the roof right away to hopefully avoid the UV damage to the original cover.
I used a shelterlogic tent as a woodshed for 4 years. Here in northern Maryland the summer sun deteriorates the plastic quickly and winds from passing tropical storms or category 1 hurricane finish them off. I bit the bullet and put up a pole building last year. No more messing with extra tarps to cover the shelterlogic.
I have been investigating a ShelterLogic shelter here in Maine, and 9 is now the thinnest fabric and they don't recommend it. Thiccknesses of 14 and 21 are also available. If I get one, I will likely go with the thickest fabric.
What about the smaller grey tent beside it. With the gable roof. How come it hasn't caved? I thought the round tops were better for preventing standing water or snow accumulation?
hmm, I just got a free damaged 10 x 17 portable car port, fix the damage parts. I put a 20 mil white trap over it. I used 3 foot rebar with a j hook to hold it down.
Going my 3rd day doing it by myself because I couldn't wait for my wife to help me put it up. Got mine from Temu. Similar to ShelterLogic but at fraction of the cost for ShelterLogic price. Hopefully it will last as long.
I have the same ShelterLogic for about 9 years and have similar experience. Aster few years mI bought several used advertisement tarps (actually sold for per kilogram price) and used one of them to cover the shelter. So I think for about $30 it's covered with a quality tarp, that even after number of years doesn't show any signs of deterioration. I used existing steel rings at the back and one side, stitched pocket on the front side and stamped in rings on the remaining side. If you want to stamp the steel rings into tarp, I recommend to buy a set of reasonable quality with dedicated stamping tool, since working with the cheap rings and hammer is not fun 😊
Never used a shelter logic for our house build. We were too cheap. We just kept materials under a tarp and replaced the tarp after it got holes. I think these things are great to get things done as a temporary measure. It's so nice to be able to clean it all out when the project is done, though. The cost is worth it and now you can do something with the frame 😅
I've been skeptical of these shelters in our climate for the reasons you detailed. Here in Fulton County, NY, I see a lot of them around, but I don't think they are made by HF. I think they are more expensive. One down the road from me seems to be holding up well so far, but it's not a cheap one.
It’s not necessarily the cold, when the shelter gets heated it evaporates the water from the soil into the air in the shelter and then the water condenses on the walls and ceiling when it cools down overnight. Tarp really solves the problem
hmm, what about putting an earth room over it like your house? I got a free frame that the tarp had rotted, was almost done reinforcing and fixing the frame. After checking the cost to put a hard cover over it. i took it all down till I can fine something low cost to cover it.

Oh wow! You were so fortunate. That is great flow on the well....Yes, we had a scary time with the well and it cost us but I have to say that even at only 5 gallons per minute, we have a tremendous amount of storage capacity since we are 680' down! LOL And we had such a tough crazy winter with dad in the hospital for 6 weeks and my daughter being pregnant that we never got a chance to cook on the wood stove once! Looking forward to next winter though :-)

The cost is certainly too high for something that lasts only 2 years. Maybe it could become a greenhouse. Wrap it in chicken wire to make it critter resistant. Cover in greenhouse plastic when it's colder and take it off when it warms up. 🙂👍🇨🇦

I was going to share that too! The wood door turned out well.
I love it! I will definitely look into that - thanks!

@ you have to buy a $40 tarp to cover it every year. It soaks up the UV and keeps the original shelter logic tarp from getting beat up from UV.
I love all the work ya'll have done, I am going to learn from your experiences and add a trap for the floor too.
Definitely makes a difference!

Agree. When we purchased ours at tractor supply 9 mil was the only option
I'm thinking the Gable design of the Harbor Freight shelter garage is better to not leak - in terms of the angle run off.
Good point
I have had 2 H.F. sheds. They last 1 winter. They hold snow worse.

Dang.... interesting how a tarp on the floor solved the condensation problem. interesting. Because it was too cold from the ground! ? wow

What about hail in Colorado will it protect it from hail
I guess it depends on the size of the hail! We’ve had hail up to 1/4” no problems
I live in New York and mine lasted less than a year. I had to put a tarp over it . Doubt I would by another one
Definitely a bummer. We’re in NY as well, we got a little more time out of it but still disappointed
Wasn't there a 5 to 10 year warranty on the canvas
Depends on the thickness of the material I believe… this was only a year or two I think
I only use shipping containers,texter111 wood on sides ,truss roof for looks , mice proof
Love that idea. We tried to get one here but shipping at the time was outrageous. Curious how the interior condensation is though?
