    al, you may want to think of a keyhole feeder. With that net type of hay feeder you will loose a lot of hay. Keyhole feeders will reall keep the loss of hay way down. Have a great Memorial Day. God bless those who gave their all. God bless America. The barn is looking very nice.

    You may want to reconsider the hay net. Goats and hay nets typically don't mix well. You'll lose a lot of hay, but more importantly, goats are bad for getting tangled in nets like that. At best, the net will get broken, but you may also end up with an injured goat.
    If your goats don't have horns, the metal cages around those square water tanks you have make great hay feeders for goats, so maybe you could use one of those and not have to buy something else!

    This is sort of shutting the door after the goats ran out, but you should have set a two by flat on the ground when installing your siding boards. This would have kept your siding off the ground and gave you an even spacing on your siding. Then you just pick up the two by and use it in some other project. The barn does look good.

    Morning Modern steaders. The goat shelter looks to be coming along great. I wish I could get my hands on some of that rough cut barn board. I love the traditional look of it. I had to build a coop addition this weekend and made a new roof for the goat shelter. Looks like we had pretty similar weather. I was dodging raindrops and "helpful" goats the whole time. I'm pretty sure i's too late since it's already Monday in the real world, but, what do you think of using double walled greenhouse panels to make a long window along the side. That way you have even more daylight for milking and for the goats when the weather is bad? Plus you can look in and see what's going on with the goats and they can look out.

    • @hughbrackett343
      @hughbrackett343 6 років тому

      I think he's counting on the siding boards to add strength to the structure. He'd loose that if he put in long windows. Don't underestimate the amount of light the skylights let in. I have 2 2x5' skylights in a 20x38' building and I never need lights in there unless it's dark outside.

    • @lesliem4123
      @lesliem4123 6 років тому

      I agree that the skylights let in lots of light, but mostly all you can see is the sky. I'm thinking that he could mount the window on the outside surface along the width, maybe placing a board top to bottom in the center to control any flexing. the front and back would have boards as well as the 2/3 below or above and below the window depending on how high the window was placed.
      I'm not sure you'd ever need it in New England, but windows that could slide like the ones in the outdoor kitchen would help with cross ventilation on hot summer days too. But I'm sure you're right. Too late now anyway.
      On a different note, I like your name. We have up to Hugh IV in the family.

  • @eddeetz493
    @eddeetz493 6 років тому

    It's no accident the Kabota fits perfect in there. With the barn I'm guessing Joel Salatin style. A fodder feed system eliminates the need for hay in the winter. Can you get wood chips on demand like justin? The lumber yard recycling is the best. Use of a temporary to permanent structure is genius. I would coat the bottoms of some treated 4x4 concrete them in at all 4 corners and the center outside. Put in a center brace concrete base you can insert a metal pole in the center for snow load in the winter. The heat from the animals should keep it clean. I see the water collection totes staged. I hope you get a sow from Mark Baker. $750.00 they are bred. 10 in a batch avg means you can presell, change 50% of your expected harvest weight, hold more harvest classes with those returning to finish the job saving up to $2.50 a pound butcher and smoking expense. Then compare the savings to real pasture and woods raised organic pork. Straus brand is exploding. They contract with pasture grazed non gmo feed animals. You have to grow at least 1 truckload. 40,000. Pounds. 25 head of red Angus mob grazed in the new and old pasture means 25 tons of fertilizer a month deposited right where you want it. Stockpile the field hay cows will get it into the beginning of winter. It would be great if you had about a 15 foot hill to access the area above the animals and drop fodder ot hay into feeding chutes. Gravity helps. I see the compost and manure bins on a slab to keep any runoff contained and your ag inspectors happy. With all the regulation on the little guys how in the world can lagoons be anywhere near water supply, lakes or rivers.? Medicated gmo feed means medicated, gmo plus glycophaste (roujdup) unsafe ponds that wreck the environment. America is voting with there purchases. Safe food is an easy choice for those that can afford it. Hemp would be the only and best crop to plant. 3x better than corn for ethanol, flowers for medicine, insulation and shiv for hempcrete to slipform insulate any building. Just add lime, minerals, water and hemp schiv after decortication mobile onsite. Buid instead of haying. The 4x4 posts inside are the connectors for the boards hung horizontally. Its waterproof, insulated, mold and bug or mouse free. It dried and cured to petrified wood. Adds strength and weight for wind resistance. Would put concrete to shame. Ceiling gets the fiber for natural insulation. The sheepmajall is born.

    I hope someone can answer this. What kind of frame did he use for the goats home. Was it a portable garage frame or did he put it together with pvc pipe? I think that is a great idea to enclose in.

    • @lesliem4123
      @lesliem4123 6 років тому

      I'm trying out my untested construction skills here but your question is mostly about shopping and I'm pretty good at that.
      The frame is from a temporary portable type garage. They're made of light weight pipe and come in a box. You can buy them on line or maybe farm or big box type stores. First you have to put them together IKEA style. There's a "canvas" cover that you pull over the whole thing and secure with ties or screws. Voila! garage.
      Problem is they don't weigh much and might blow over or away in a really bad storm. Also the cover wears out and gets leaky holes in it, so they don't last many years. So in this case Al attached wood to the frame, I think by just drilling a hole for the screw. If he didn't do this the frame would not be strong enough for the rest of the materials. Then presto, he just built it into a goat barn. You can see another frame like this here. permies.com/t/59017/Lumnah-Acres-Homestead
      Hopefully my answer is fairly correct but if not maybe someone else will help us both out with better information.

    • @jenniferjones325
      @jenniferjones325 6 років тому +1

    • @cstump2005
      @cstump2005 6 років тому

      Brian Curwick I think part of the deal with getting land cleared is that it’s paid for with the lumber they clear. Al isn’t having to pay them a bunch of money because the logging company takes the logs and sells them. Al might make a little money from it but I don’t think he’ll have the lumber

    • @BrianBriCurInTheOC

      Crystal Stump
      Several HomeSteaders have milled their own lumber,
      It is MUCH CHEAPER than Cheaper Depot!
      The Permaculture culture and basically Al’s is to return the land to a much better condition which is usually by mulching and composting but especially with wood chips.
      It is also MUCH CHEAPER to obtain the wood chips from these guys than other outlets!
