Noticing that you weren't intending on posting the video, I'd like to express my gratitude, because this was the only video out here showing me the exact process and reassuring me that it's possible. I have a 2008 Nissan rouge and the compressor went out, so I thought might as well change the receiver drier and the expansion valve. Awesome video and straight to the point with no annoying music. This by far the best video I have watched showing this procedure. I am replacing the AC compressor in my 2008 Nissan Frontier and they recommend that I replace the expansion valve, hopefully the expansion valve can be accessed from the engine compartment.

just replaced two on a mini van. there is one in the rear underneath the interior panels for rear AC & one on the firewall. they were tough, nearly stripping the bolts from being on there so tight for many years.
Plus those screws are always covered with water from condensation and they rust pretty badly.

I didn't do oil flush, I don't think it is needed if your AC system was sealed. You'll just need to evacuate air and moisture using vacuum pump after you done.
But if you want to do oil flush anyway, you would have to pay AC repair shop. They have special pump for that, which is very expensive. It's not worth it buying that pump if you are not doing it constantly as business.
ok, your compressor was bad (locked up) same as mine, my system is still pressurized. and replacing parts listed on your videos yours worked fine? I'm going your route if so. Again thanks for all your experience. -Ray

Just make sure buy one with warranty. Purchased refurbished compressor online - cuz its much cheaper.
Purchased expansion valve anspd orings from dealer, they seem to fit much better than aftermarket ones.
In my '06 you don't have to remove none of those firewall items. it is reachable. Thank you for answering my other question. i edited it because you showed it in the video. Great video, thank you.
There is AC evaporator on the other side.
You don't have to remove it, but there's only a few 10mm bolts holding the valence cover on and it's much much easier with it off.
if your Nissan Altima is an older model make sure when you tackle the expansion valve to soak the allen head bolts as best you can with blaster because of the extensive corrosion and use a 4mm allen head tool to fit your ratchet and make sure the allen head tool is held square to the bolt or you will risk rounding the bolt head or worse break the bolt . put even pressure on the ratcket and let the Blaster work. If it doers not breaqk loose reblast and let sit and then try later, if the bolts are corroded you will need patience or risk broken bolts. My bolts finally came out after several soakings and a lot of patience which I normally don't have but broken bolts means the dash has to come out.

It was hex key. I believe it was 5mm.

DIY-time, very nice video! I have a questions regarding the compressor oil. How much oil do you need to add when putting everything back together? I know there is a decal on the compressor which specifies how much oil needed. In order to top up to the correct amount for the system, do we need to flush the AC system since there will be some oil left in the other parts of the system such as the dryer, condenser, AC lines, evaporator and of course compressor? Did you flush the AC system before topping up the oil to the correct amount? Thanks.
Usually the expansion valve is just stuck just tap it while the pump is running that will work
I lost hope in my ac and was going to replace the compressor and radiator as 5 workshops and dealership recommended to, then i read ur comment, wiggled the pipe connected to the expansion valve and my ac came back to life.

The ambient temp was 73.. low side 45 and the high side was 110.. the car cools during the night and in cooler weather but once it gets around 80 degrees it only cools a little while driving running but blows warm air at idle.. any suggestions?

Just to add to some replies below. The green "O" rings DO suck for one thing. I used the ones I got with my drier and they leaked like a bitch, so I went to the hardware store and bought black ones in the pluming aisle and they sealed fine. I used the green ones for the expansion valve and they're leaking as well using a bottle of soap and water and compressed air. I'm going to get black ones at the hardware store and replace them as well too. I don't believe there's really any need to get factory "O" rings. Pluming ones seem to work just as well. If you do, take along your old ones or aftermarkets for matching. Also I didn't see pag oil being used to coat the rings first. This helps them seal.
Yea the entire plunger came out with mine and it's a pain getting that back in. Doing a nissan rogue select and I have no idea how to get it back on. It's entirely too flimsy to push back in. Could I get away without it? Everytime I do these jobs the dumbest things happen to me that doesn't occur in the videos.
Grear stuff, I am have to do this to an 06 Frontier that shows the valve side is leaking pretty bad.
Wouldn't it be easier to put the O rings in the Vale itself instead of on the lines of the Evaporator side? Or would that be the incorrect way of doing it?

What kind of question is that? He used the existing bolt for the bracket that finally goes on. It’s not like you’re gonna go out and buy that particular socket or something is it? You’re not going to buy the bolt either. If you have socket sets you’ll figure it out.

What were the symptoms? I bought a low pressure (cycling switch). The compressor always stays on. Also, the line that is supposed to be cold is hot. And, it blows hot air. I have not received it, yet. I see that this can cause the same problems.
I replaced mine proactively at the same time when I was replacing compressor.

Simple question: Why does the expansion valve need to be replaced? It looks to be just a solid piece of machined aluminum with some o-rings and two fittings. What goes bad on it?
Never mind, I've answered my own question.
It isn't just a block of aluminum. The diaphragm on the side _is_ the expansion valve part. It senses temperature and regulates the flow of Freon into the evaporator.

No, not necessary. Just lubricate the o-rings with oil before installing the valve.

Can I just release all of the freon myself out of the system by taking the cap off the lines and pressing in the nipple? Then install the part, and recharge using an ac recharge kit? Seems much easier and cost effective than taking it to be extracted by a mechanic. Since I already have a can of freon on hand.

My AC compressor was locked up. I replaced the valve too since I already had the system discharged. It's often required my the compressor manufactures, otherwise warranty will be voided.

This looks like the same set up as my '05 1L Sentra. I've lost all pressure and the xpv is covered in dye - would a faulty unit cause this leak or is it maybe just the o-rings? Thanks for sharing!
I would replace it. If you are gonna be getting in there and recharging the system afterwards, might as well do it. They are not that expensive. Get good OEM xpv. Aftermarket crap isn’t always up to snuff.

Yes, absolutely. You'll need to evacuate refrigerant before you start the replacement.
Hello again...an hour ago.. I used and installed a brand-new compressor of Maxima 2011 on my V6 Altima 2011... Every thing went ok... EXCEPT After 10 minutes of turning AC on... low pressure hose FREEZES.. So.. How could I fix this problem?

So the tip of one of the bolt snapped off and now it’s stuck inside the valve. Any advice on extracting it. I fear I may have to go from the inside and take apart my dash as a last resort.
Yeah, they get pretty rusty in there due to constant condensation. I doubt I will be able to remove mine if I have to do this again.

Great video, how did you remove the wiper blades?
Remove two plastic caps at the base of wiper blades, then remove two nuts (I think those are 14mm), and then just pull off the wipers.
Having trouble when installing the TXV getting the back side holes to line up with the two lines coming off the evaporator. I’m using my camera and the larger left side isn’t lined up entirely, and the two bolts won’t go in. It has to be me, since I installed the original part and have the same problem. Tips or suggestions? I’m inserting that left side at an angle just as you are, not sure what I need to do.
Try to stick small screwdrivers inside the holes to get them aligned. I remember that rubber/foam thing around it was also resisting snd pushing the valve out of place.
@@DIYtime I got it in by turning my back towards the vehicle and using a pull motion, patience was key here! Pressures before TXV/Condenser replacement were 40(L) / 150(H), now they are 42 (L) / 225(H) at 84 degrees garage temp, but temps at the vents is still 60. Seems the system is working, just not as cold as it should. One suggestion was the blend door actuator which I’m looking into, any other thoughts on why it’s not blowing colder?
Hey there I am working on this today, right now actually lol and wanted to know if there was any reason you did not pull the intake manifold instead because it seems like there would be more room pulling out the intake instead of going by the wipers like you did in the video? Also going through the wiper area doesn't seem like you gain very much room to work with even though you made it look easy it seems it would be very difficult from that direction. My hands are greasy as I'm typing this lol so any help would be appreciated
Yes, I think you are right, removing intake manifold will give you more space. I just followed the instructions from the official Nissan repair manual and it was a bit tight doing it that way. Try it your way and let me know how it goes.

Check the pressure. Your refrigerant level might be causing this.

I think Freon may leak if it’s not tight enough...
Did you experience the following symptoms like low pressure at 75psi (too high), high pressure at 130psi (too low), hot air blowing, even though the compressor was replaced and freon filled, that made you replaced the expansion valve?
My compressor was bad. All oil leaked out and compressor completely locked up. I replaced expansion valve simply because I was already working on empty system and swapping valve only made sense at the time.

Check the pressure in the system. Its possibly overcharged.
At 5:40 you add O rings to the firewall part the the e valve but you didn't take any out, so my question is do you have to add those O rings?
It was a bit challenging to record. I removed and replaced all old o rings. They came off with the e valve or just fell down.

Yes. I had 2 on each side. All points of connection must have o-rings. Otherwise you’ll have a refrigerant leak.

You absolutely MUST empty all freon. Freon is a dangerous gas and it is under high pressure. It will cause ingury or frostbite if it comes in contact with skin or eyes. It is also illegal in most states to release ot into atmosphere. It also requires special equipment to do it. You can find a mechanic shop to evacuate freon for you. They can save it for you until you are done with the repair, and then charge it back into the system. That way you won't have to buy replacement freon.

It should fit right out of the box, as long as you have a correct one. Compare both old and new valve to make sure they look identical before installation.
How do you know this valve is not working and needs to be replaced or repaired..
And.. Is it exactly the same on V6 models ??
I changed mine cuz my compressor broke, and I figured since I’m already going in there, I better replace everything now. That way all parts are new and should work for another 10 years or so.
Otherwise, there is a long multiple pages troubleshooting flow-chart in the repair manual that explains how to diagnose it.
* I got a repair manual for my specific car for like $10 online in PDF digital format. Very helpful resource. I always refer to it for all my repair needs.

I replaced everything on my 2012 Nissan Altima compressor a/c condenser dryer but I didn’t replace the expansion valve...the question is do I need to replace it also?
It's recommended, since you already have the AC system discharged. Expansion valve is around $20. If you choose not to replace it now and it fails month later, you'll have to discharge, store, and recharge freon once again, which is gonna cost a lot more. The only problem, it is quite difficult process on this particular Altima....
what's the size of the Torx Driver bit to remove the 2 bolts that mount the expansion valve?
I think it was 6mm.
H4.0 is the size.
they aren't in there very tight either so I found a good option was a drill tip in that size and then a hand held screwdriver type attachment was good.
I just completed this and used a 5/32 hexagon bit.

What were the symptoms you had that made you change it?
I had a different issue. Compressor started leaking and locked up eventually. I replaced expansion valve and other components because the seller of AC compressor would void warranty otherwise.
I have a pretty identical TXV on my car (Four Seasons 39007 If you want to have a look). Have you got any info about the manufacturer? Is it made by TGK?
I don't remember, it was a while ago. Mine was OEM, I got it at the dealer.
@@DIYtime My OEM no longer sells it, in my case i need to get it either from other OEMs (at a ludicrous price too) or from a scrapyard evaporator, but in the former case i'd like to ask the manufacturer if it has a cross-charge or nicked seat/bleed port because it's a variable displacement compressor (just like yours) and a normally charged TXV without nicks or bleed ports makes the vent temperature "hunt" around and also destroys the compressor because it closes completely at low cooling load and deprives the compressor of lubricant. Mine is still working ok but it's getting very very old.
Im sure there should be aftermarket ones available. What car is this?
@@DIYtime Unfortunately, it's a very low end European car. As for the TXV, the most important things are that all 4 ports have the same dimensions (those of the Four Seasons 39007 valve, that looks like the only aftermarket one) and that the valve never throttles completely shut, because it's a variable displacement compressor. Well, not so hard to test for the latter anyway. Just freeze the bulb with a gas duster sprayed upside down and then blow air through the smaller port on the engine bay side of the valve and check if some air is still passing to the other side.

Follow AC refrigerant lines from AC compressor and try to locate expansion valve. If you don't see it inside the firewall, it could be behind glovebox or under dashboard.

First time I messed up installing expansion valve and freon leaked out after 3 days.
I went to dealer and bought original OEM orings and expansion valve.
I should still have original packaging somewhere in my garage. I try find it and send you the part numbers today after work.
That would be Awesome. I replaced all my 3 items today. Compressor, dryer, and TXV and ended up using green orings. I did a pressure test with Nitrogen at 150 psi and it held for one hour so fingers crossed that the AC lasts more than 3 days like you experienced. I also wanted to use dealer OEM orings but could not locate part #'s.
Yes, I also had a hard time locating OEM orings. When all freon leaked out, I thought aftermarket expansion valve and orings were not good, so I went to dealer and they found correct OEM parts for me. I paid waaaay more, thinking it worth it. But when I removed aftermarket valve, I noticed it was just oring not seated properly (you know how hard it is to work in such a tight place). I kept original parts anyway....

No, I just installed brand new OEM valve and it's been working fine for several years now.

DIY-time agreed 100% about the CVT. Luckily, mine went prior to the warranty running out. Replaced for free.

The orings you put in at the 5:30 mark.. Did you take some old ones out or you're just putting those in there for extra seal?
Yes, there were orings in there, they just got stuck to the expansion valve when I took it out, so you don't see them in the video (it was kinda hard to record and do the job at the same time). I replaced all old orings with the new ones.
DIY-time can you believe that as I was doing this and the very last screw stripped on me. The first hex was tight but it came out. The second one stripped so now I have to figure out how I'm going to remove it.

It won't be exactly the same, but it could be very similar. I never worked on that car, so I can't tell you for sure. Try to follow pipes coming from AC compressor and see if you can locate expansion valve somewhere on the firewall. Some cars have it under the dashboard or behind the glovebox. The best would be to check Rouge online forums or to get a repair manual for it.

Not 100% sure, but I think yes. Just follow the pipes coming from AC compressor and they will both meet at the expansion valve usually in the firewall.
Hey bud since you have more experience than me in these Altimas I have a 2011 Altima 2.5 with 130 K miles and after I changed the pulley and clutch plate it started leaking oil from the center from behind a pulley it was still blowing cold air do I really need to change condenser expansion valve dryer all that? It happened 2 days ago..Or can I just change the compressor?
First off never change the clutch plate and compressor pulley. The money spent oftentimes is comparable around the same or even surpasses the cost of a brand new compressor. You end up not saving much money at all and waste a whole lot of time. If you have to redo the job twice it you can easily end up spending more money in the end. You get no warranty if you repair the clutch. At least with a new compressor it comes with a warranty. Not to mention not deal with the headache and time wasted to track down the right parts and get the correct installation proeceedure and torque specs .
Way easier to just mount compressor onto engine. Clurtch plates are complicated for anyone especially beginners. You have to get the shim the gap perfectly or it wont run right. Ain't no one got time for that. Chances are other parts,of compressir are wirn as well not just vlutch plate but internak pistons abd seals that you cant replace. Just get a new or refurb compressor next time. Don't try repairing it next time. Just majes more sebse. Maybe back in the 80s but not anymore. Parts are so much cheaper just to replace it today. I myself prefer and only use new.
Only the drier everytime you open the ac system for any ac repair. Unless the symptoms and testing show the expansion valve to be faulty then obviously you'll need to replace that or it won't be fully fixed. It is a must not optional to replace drier if you want to do the job right and to last a long time. If you want it to have the best efficiency and performance. Not expensive part at all. Expansion not necessary but why not it's cheap to replace just fir prevention. They do become clogged and csn get stuck open or stuck closed.
how did you know you needed to replace the vtx specifically as opposed to the compressor? what are the symptoms?

In my case, I proactively replaced my txv when replacing leaking AC compressor. It was also required to get warranty coverage for the new compressor.
Damn, just bought those too, they're $$$ 😑. Pray I get through changing the compressor without any headaches

Try to follow refrigerant lines from AC compressor and see if expansion valve is in the same location. Otherwise it might be behind the glovebox or under the dashboard.
