My daughter want to move to Stockholm when she finishes her master degree. She is working on learning the Swedish language on her own. She wants to leave the US because f fascism sneaking in.
I am irish but living in Sweden for 25 years. I found it difficult to settle at the start but i wouldn’t leave now. I love the access to nature, i don’t live in a town so i spend a lot of time outdoors. I have a river, many lakes and forest on my doorstep and i love it!

Don't you ever think back to the Emerald Isle ? I left UK for the Netherlands, stayed there 30 years, then went home to retire. I guess everyone thinks differently.
Just a quick correction about the "-berg" thing! Many cities has the suffix "berg", but Göteborg (Gothenburg) ends with Borg. That kind of translates into "fort" (as in fortification), and probably stems from very old times, where the city was small and surrounded by some kind of fortifications. There is a bunch of more cities with this suffix too, like Helsingborg or Trelleborg in Southern Sweden!
In english it translates to burg as in Gothenburg, Hamburg, St petersburg, Edinburgh etc. The meaning is historicly a fortified town but nowdays it just means town.
It is about the same thing my friend Borg, Berg Burg.. It is fortress in essence. I happen to know that as I did a lot of research some years back Saxon is the closest middle match I think . We also have many other names that depict certain stuff in Europe like "ham" "ley"

@Victor Andersen - This is one of the better mullet styles & even the worst long hair cut is better than the totally boring subservience short haircuts ... surely a low ponytail (or better long open hair like Conan / Tarzan) would look better (especially on fit looking guys) , but this mullet is totally OK (see Dolph Lundgren as 1987 He-Man )
As someone who’s really into city design/urban infrastructure type stuff I really wish we would have the same sort of thought put into our cities as they do in places like Sweden. Also Sweden is old, so goes to show you that things can both remain historic and also modernize at the same time. Just something else I find interesting
We just moved to southern Sweden After living in Southern England for nearly 20 years. We honestly feel like we've been given a pardon & released from hell, it's just so much better in almost every way.

As a Mediterranean person who's moved to Sweden, I used to focus a lot on the things I missed from home. It is very healing to see someone else point out all these good things about living here. I've stopped taking them for granted but it's a good reminder to find joy and a sense of home wherever we go. And the more we travel and see, the humbler we might feel as we become bigger people, seeing more points of view, values and ways to find joy than we used to know. You gotta move further north if you don’t like the rain in winter! During winter we get a lot of snow in the central and northern parts of the country… and the occasional northern lights. You’re missing out on some of the most beautiful parts of the country if you’re not venturing north too. It’s cool to see how much you’re enjoying Sweden though, I moved here in late 2019 and don’t want to leave either.
@@ShoeibShargo and more darkness! But there is less wind so the cold is easier to prepare for. Also the housing is cheaper (generally in smaller cities), and the electricity. I pay about 6500kr for 49m^2 (all included. ~835CAD)

Awesome video! 🎉 The historian in me is demanding me to just make a small correction. Gothenburg is not named after a mountain. Göteborg, where Borg means fortress/keep, was named Fortress of the Geats/Goths (Götar), goths being the historical tribe of southern Sweden. Gothenburg is in the province of Västergötland, Western Gothland.
HOWEVER... :) The mountain he is filming is called Ramberget, which later was used as inspiration by a Swedish immigrant in the U.S when creating his new family name Rambo. Now more famous as a breed of apples and a role played by Sylvester Stallone. Both the apple and chararcter name is directly linked to that very mounatain on Hisingen island in Gothenburg. Edit: As Jonas Olsson points out, the mountain in the video is in fact NOT Ramberget , but a similar looking (at least in these pictures) mountain in Mölndal about 6km away.
I am a Sweden, and whilst I don't want to bash on my home country too much, it is not the place for everyone. Our culture will clash with some peoples culture, Swedes tend to be very socially reserved like Trav mentioned in the video. If you do manage to pierce through that part of it, you can definitely start loving it here. If you are very outgoing and naturally social, things will go well. Also, the best part of Sweden is definitely our commute. Let me attest to that.
There's a difference between being "reserved" and "unsocial", the reserved aspect is a virtue, the unsocial aspect is not. Swedes value too much of this anti-social/unsocial element. The unsocial aspect is why suicide rates and loneliness is so common in Sweden.
Of all the different natinalities I have met, I have always felt a connection to the Canadians. Maybe it's their tendancies towards politeness and outspokenness, or maybe it's that chill in our blood talking to each other, but from one northern boi to another; we welcome you here, and thank you for your visit! Coming back to California I got depressed because of the life I had left behind in Europe. The food, people and the culture was such an eye opener for me. I am another Canadian who has moved to Sweden about 15 months ago - Gothenburg specifically (so cool to see you moving around the city as I don't think it gets it due) and work in Kungsbacka coaching swimming. Loved your insights I am going to add a little of my experience. You are very right about the small talk. But it is funny I don't know if it is because I am a novelty or just overall talkative I have found it pretty easy to get Swedes to chat and that has been a great surprise. I have heard that Gothenburg is very different than Stockholm and Malmo in that way. Dead on that Gothenburg weather is like Vancouver, but it is hilarious about the rain (I grew up a lot of years in Regina so I know the Winnipeg weather and what you are used to). Moving from Vancouver though last year was the sunniest winter I have had in years! My wife (who is a Swede) called BS (she lived in Vancouver for 10 years too), so I looked it up and Vancouver gets on average a month more of rain than Gothenburg. Having said that it freaking rains sideways in Gothenburg!!! That took some getting used to. Love that you showed the Circle K hotdogs!!! That is one of the first things that I tell people back home - they actually eat the hot dogs from Circle K (will always remind me of this Simpsons episode - ua-cam.com/video/dWC2DvAxBQY/v-deo.html). Even though I know they are good I haven't been able to bring myself to do it. You left out (you may not know) the second professional soccer team in Gothenburg - BK Häcken. In fact they won their first all Svensk Championship this year. My wife works within the football club so I feel a little connected ;) Also on the football end they have Gothia Cup a youth soccer (sorry to all the Swedes for calling it soccer) tournament of 1700 teams it is wonderful madness!!! Renting, yes it is expensive, but even worse is the wait. To get a firsthand apartment some people have been waiting up to 10 years!!! FIKA!!!! So wonderful. Kanelbulle soooo good. Skagen amazing and it truly is the land of Kababs!!! There are the Gothia Towers that you explain very well about being out of place, but you forgot that monstrosity they are putting up in Hisingen - I don't even want to talk about it, but it is the biggest eye sore ever. Great job on this you represent both Canada and Sweden well!!!

@@Anna-bq8gl You can rent what they call second hand apartments, which means that you are basically renting from someone who is subletting. To get a firsthand apartment it can take 10 years. It was crazy enough to find a place that when we moved even though we weren't ready to (just because we didn't know where we wanted to live) we bought a place. Lucky for us we found a place we love and lucky for us we were in a situation where we could.

It seems Sweeden is the place you should be. Also, even tho they might not be as open, the people who’ve helped you along the way over there have been nothing but epic it would seem! it was quite enjoyable to see so many familiar places from the perspective of someone who moved here so recently, many areas I've been trough hundreds of times and some places I've only been to a few times all with the eyes of someone from a different culture seeing things I myself might have missed or taken for granted. the most amazing thing so far about this video as a swede is to realize we actually have great public transportation. Wow, I'm so glad to hear you took the time to embrace your new environment and the culture around you here. Missing your loved ones is not so easy during your own adjustment period, believe me the distance is not the thing that disturbs the most during longer environmental changes. Thank you for all the good laughs you offer, when you describe things that are in our cities. While I, as a Swede, take these things more or less for granted. I feel a little ashamed when you so softly describe the abundance of the things around you, we are the lucky few. Your entire video and voice has a natural flow and reminds me to open my eyes even more to see our open landscapes again, thank you so much for your reminder of what is all around us. You're absolutely right that we Swedes don't like to chit-chat in the grocery store or something like that. Most Swedes plan their social time. If you live in a multi-storey building, you hardly talk to your neighbours, at best a simple Hello if you're lucky. When we use the shuttle, bus, train, etc. Most people "stare" straight into nothingness through the window, or at best down at the phone/computer. As a foreigner, it is more accepted to break our "social rules". Gothenburg as a city since its birth (before Christ of course) had contacts with foreign countries via shipping, for example trade in China. Most people in Gothenburg are helpful towards tourists or foreigners. If, as a Swede, I were to start asking the person I meet how her day has been, I would definitely get a look, she thinks I'm crazy. I was born in Sweden, but I feel like I don't always fit in bc I'm naturally a super talk-friendly person. Ppl usually find me really nice and open. Some ppl are not used to it like you said in the video. Swedes are more reserved and not used to talking to strangers or being openly friendly or chatty. This can be hard for me as I'm naturally very friendly and like to talk to almost anyone. Ofc I understand that we can't talk anywhere and anytime or limitlessly, but I wish Swedes were a bit more open and easy to hit up chats just for fun and some nice conversations.
Jag har varit en introvert person hela mitt liv - aldrig känt behov av att umgås med folk så mycket, men på sistone vill jag verkligen lära mig att tänka om. Jag håller ögonkontakt med folk på bussen tills de tittar bort (det är alltid lika kul att se) och jag startar konversationer med främlingar som kan verka meningslösa. Men alla gånger då jag gör detta lär jag mig själv att det faktiskt inte är så svårt att bete sig som en öppen person. Om folk ser och hör mig sjunga på tåget till exempel, känner jag inte längre någon skam över det - för det är ju ändå sådant folk gör själva. Det känns bra att kunna vara sig själv. Nej, jag ska aldrig mer vara den jag varit. Om vi träffas ute någon gång är jag den som hälsar först! Kram från Skåne.
Sweden should move to Africa and cultivate a warmer climate there. There's no reason to live up there anymore. I don't even know how it was settled it's so cold.

MTR Express is what I took between Gothenburg and Stockholm, very fast and very comfortable. I was amazed by the history of Sweden, nearly 700 years old as a country something that makes the U.S. and Canada look like toddlers in history... Amazing stuff!
Very interesting to watch, even for a Swede! Agree that there isn't much small talk with strangers in Sweden, however, that interaction with the woman wasn't a good example. She was nice, she seemed happy that you spoke to her and asked her questions. Anyways, hope you have a nice stay here in Sweden and hope you have felt welcome!
Great content and commentary! Getting out of North America and traveling the world is an eye opening experience wherever you go. And more than just traveling you have settled in a beautiful country for 2 years, developed good relationships and enjoy the local culture. I'm an American living in Hong Kong 12 years and I think it's time for a new adventure in Europe. Your video makes me want to visit and get a first hand look at Sweden and what it may have to offer. One thing about the Trams, when you get higher up in the country where I live, we don't have any trams sadly and public transportation drastically reduces in usefulness. Train prices go up and you have to switch trains a lot depending on your destination. Still have semi-reliable busses in towns but trains become relegated to just between cities. Which is a shame tbh, I soo badly want monorails... Loved this video ^^ Glad you enjoy Sweden! Explore further north!
What a nice video! It made my swedish boyfriend a little homesick :) We both live in the Netherlands now and the dutchie in me chuckled at the praise for the transportation system. My experience with it wasn't good outside of some major cities, but we're quite spoiled here. My favourite parts of Sweden are the forests, woodcabins and ofcourse having a fika, it's a beautiful country!
Haha i agree, i'm dutch and i lived in the swedish countryside in 2018/19 and i struggled a lot with the public transport, there would be 3 busses between 7 and 9 in the morning going to the city ("city", it had 10000 inhabitants), and 2 in the afternoon, latest going like 16.30, then from the city to home again the latest would go at 17.00, i hated being dependent on someone to have to bring me places all the time because the busses and trains were shit, at least in terms of how often they'd go, otherwise they were fine. I would love to move to Sweden again but i think i'll have to get my drivers lisence first haha

I just moved from the UK to Gothenburg. I am not complain about the rain here at all. In the UK you can easily get 2 month rain none stop. The weather is so much better here in Gothenburg except the longer dark hours in the winter.
@@yezih2694 we sometime refer to Göteborg as little London because of the rain but it gotta be less rain if its little London and not London extreme ;)

About that language barriere, english is based on scandinavian (swedish/danish/norwegian) language, so it´s no wonder we know how to speak it. Most english men/women are silenced pretty quick when you give them the punchline: the name England is from the old swedish word änglaland, meaning "the land where angels dwell". We named their contry. Try talk yourself outtta that one.. Wish you keep enjoing your stay, and meet many new friends!
I live an hour west of Stockholm and it's all forest. Pine trees for hundreds of kilometers with small towns in between. It's always been nice to travel south where it's more open but what blew me away was the north. You must travel above the arctic circle and see some of our mountains. It blew me away! Nice blog btw :)
Actually for me as Central European this infinite vastness of seemingly untouched forests in the south of Sweden was what blew me away. We don't have something like that here. I just discovered Sweden as travel destination this year (just spent two weeks in Östergötlands län) and now we already have plans where to go next year, somwhere in Västernorrlands län.

As a student from the Netherlands who wants to do a minor in either Sweden or Canada i loved this video. So much information, and not the standard pro's and con's you hear everywhere haha.
I played hockey in Montreal as a youth and live in Sweden so I think this video really hits home... but... It's common that a person who moves to a different country compares the new country favorably to the former. In fact, there are myriad research articles written on the subject. The love/hate relation occurs in distinct periods. I remember when I moved from the US to Poland in the mid-90's, everything was so much better in Wroclaw than DC. And when I moved to Stockholm at the end of the 90's! Whoa! But one must remember that this is very similar to "being in love". When you're first "in love", everything about the person is great. Not just great but way, way better than your ex. Over time, one "falls out of love" - but maybe still loves - this object or person. It's the same for new cultures. So yes, I've lived in Stockholm for 24 years now and I think it's a great place to live. But there are tons (TONS!!!!) of things that are way better in the US. Or at least in New England, where I'm from. I can't speak for the rest of the country - which is freaking huge btw. And Canada is even bigger than the US.
I have no idea how I stumbled onto your channel but I watched like 8-9 in a row while relaxing after work. Love this channel! I was a goalie myself back in the day so I'm reliving my youth watching this. The practices and just general vlogging is great. You do such a good job of making a fair representation of our country as well. I lived in the US for 10 years and weirdly enough I understand the culture shock you went through because I had it coming back! Haha, much love!
I randomly came across this video and as someone who lives in Gothenburg and travels a lot in Sweden and Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark), many of the things said, here are pretty accurate BUT... there are STILL many hidden things that you would be surprised to find out once you settle, especially if you are just a regular expat/immigrant (not someone who plays for a hockey team, etc.) There is no doubt that Sweden is beautiful but but for tourists, it's an expensive place to visit, worth it though if you love nature. For expats, it's a struggle unless you are an Engineer, Software Developer,IT (especially in Gothenburg). Like any other places, there are pros and cons.

@@trav4oilers Where do I even begin? Lol! I have a lot of expat friends here both non-EU citizens and EU citizens. If you go to a lot of these expat get together, you will hear a lot about the unexpected struggles of ordinary expats & immigrants here. Let's start with the basic things - 1. Opening a bank account ( EU citizens should be allowed to open any bank account in EU accdg. to law unless convicted of a money laundering crime,etc.) but not in Sweden. You need to have a "job contract" which is hard if you are a freelancer or let's say someone who already has savings & money & doesn't need to work for a while BUT here's the tricky part - "it depends which bank you go to and who will handle you" . If you are lucky and you come across the bank staff who are in the mood then you can get an account. Lol! 2. Booking doctor's appointment - There's a joke among expats - "Just don't get sick" One time I was talking to a German friend and she was so excited to finally get a doctor's appointment! (She only got it because she asked her company doctor to help her!) 3. Job Market - As mentioned, if you are not an Engineer, IT specialist, Software Developer or in any of those related fields, finding a job is a struggle. For a country that speaks good English, fluency in the Swedish language is a must and even if the position doesn't require it, the chances of that job going to a Swede is higher. 4. Race Pay Gap - Everyone talks about pay gap between men and women, but no one talks about race pay gap. Swedes are generally paid higher than other nationalities. I kind of understand that, but if someone is doing the same job and work,then why pay someone more or less because of their "race"? 5. Hidden racism - Generally, Swedes are nice people! But hidden racism is always there. It's like sugarcoated because the country has accepted a lot of refugees. It's not even about being white or something. For example, my French friend works in a Fashion company and she says - there are two couches - one for the Swedes and one for the non-Swedes and that kind of makes her feel not so welcome. I think there was no ill intention in that, but because a lot of Swedes tend to stick with themselves, this comes off differently to others. One of my Filipina friends said no one talks to her at work because most of the staff are Swedes. She ended up getting therapy bec of that work environment. * As for me, I'm pretty lucky to have very good connection with Swedes. I have a few Swedish friends of my own who are amazing, but most expats don't (unless it's their workmates) These things happen everywhere in the world though, so it's not just Sweden but I think it would be nice to know that befor someone moves here. Some of the people I know said they had totally different expectations then reality kicked in too late so they didn't know how to deal with it. It pays to be informed! Tack

Well, you must consider the fact that. Minimum pay is higher and median salary is higher in Sweden than in Canada. Great video thou, you made some great comparisons between our two countries. I lived in Canada for 11 years and i loved it.

Wow, it sounds like after a period of orientation. The country really grew on you and that’s great to hear. Because a lot of videos AC on Sweden they mentioned that the people are cold hard to get to know the cold weather at Century Center that made me feel a little more mixed about it.

Fun and interesting video! I'm from Luleå (way up north in Sweden) and I moved in the opposite direction, to Edmonton, Canada, seven years ago. Even though there are differences of course I also find a lot of simlarities between Sweden and Canada and Swedes and Canadiens. Just recently became a Canadian citizen and I'm so happy that I live in Canada and not in the US 🙂

This is an amazing video which represents a lot of good things about Sweden. Glad you like it. A few things i know you miss out on living in southern parts of Sweden is the great winters of northern Sweden, its way better than the rainy shit winters in southern Sweden(sorry 80% of our population). The summers on the countryside is amazing in all of Sweden. Boatlife is a big thing during summer aswell, not to forget the caravan camper lifestyle. Also don't forget something else that is really amazing about Sweden "Allemansrätten". Its quite unique. I’m half English and half Swedish, I live in England and visit Sweden often. It’s great to see your view Sweden and glad you enjoy it. The maddest part for me is that you don’t see pigeons in Canada… I thought they were all over😅
My Grandparents moved from Sweden to Minnesota around 1920. From crappy weather to crappy cold weather. As soon as I was 18, I moved south and now live in the Bergs of New Mexico. My personality is still somewhat Swedish. I still play hockey, been playing since I was 8, and I eat a lot of fish and shrimp. But, I live alone so I don't have to take my shoes off when I get home from work.
@@trav4oilers literally all Swedes that did not end up in New York or Chicago went to Minnesota since it reminded them of their home + that the land was dirt-free to get back then. Some went across the border into Canada as well but they are just a few. There is a reason to why the football team from Minneapolis is called the Vikings.
Things I usually take for granted I'm now really thankful for. Are you trying to learn Swedish and how is it going? If you want to see runes and other ancient remains I can send you pictures and show where they are (since they're pretty hard to find even as a swede) Kind regards!

I have several English friends, some really tried to learn Swedish, but it is tough, because as soon as they open their mouth and that awkward Swedish comes so many just defaults to English because they are so used to it and/or they want to show off. I had one friend who lived here for ten years, he went to SFI classes, and he managed to learn Swedish, but he almost exclusively conversed in English, because that was simpler. Which lead to me talking Swedish to him and him answering in English.

@Collen Flarity I’ve never been to USA but i feel the same, up until the turn of the century living in USA looked like a dream come true where you can achieve anything. Until like 2015 i always wanted to visit to see it for myself, not anymore.
One HUGE fact I like about sweden, (being your canadian you probably didn't consider) is their "universal health care!!" As an american, the thought of healthcare being treated as a universal human RIGHT, is amazing to me!! I'm considering the possibility of moving there one day, or moving to germany norway, or austrailia.

It is so much fun to see you in my hometown Göteborg. My family moved to the states when I was 6yrs old. It's fun for me when I go back to see the relatives. My daughter want to move to Stockholm when she finishes her master degree. She is working on learning the Swedish language on her own. She wants to leave the US because f fascism sneaking in.
I am irish but living in Sweden for 25 years. I found it difficult to settle at the start but i wouldn’t leave now. I love the access to nature, i don’t live in a town so i spend a lot of time outdoors. I have a river, many lakes and forest on my doorstep and i love it!

Don't you ever think back to the Emerald Isle ? I left UK for the Netherlands, stayed there 30 years, then went home to retire. I guess everyone thinks differently.
Just a quick correction about the "-berg" thing!
Many cities has the suffix "berg", but Göteborg (Gothenburg) ends with Borg. That kind of translates into "fort" (as in fortification), and probably stems from very old times, where the city was small and surrounded by some kind of fortifications. There is a bunch of more cities with this suffix too, like Helsingborg or Trelleborg in Southern Sweden!
Göteborg translates to fortress of the geats, geats being the ethnic group that occupied most of western sweden pre 1200
In english it translates to burg as in Gothenburg, Hamburg, St petersburg, Edinburgh etc.
The meaning is historicly a fortified town but nowdays it just means town.

As someone who’s really into city design/urban infrastructure type stuff I really wish we would have the same sort of thought put into our cities as they do in places like Sweden. Also Sweden is old, so goes to show you that things can both remain historic and also modernize at the same time. Just something else I find interesting

We just moved to southern Sweden After living in Southern England for nearly 20 years. We honestly feel like we've been given a pardon & released from hell, it's just so much better in almost every way.

It is very different to every person. Maybe for you it is perfect place but no for everyone.
As a Mediterranean person who's moved to Sweden, I used to focus a lot on the things I missed from home. It is very healing to see someone else point out all these good things about living here. I've stopped taking them for granted but it's a good reminder to find joy and a sense of home wherever we go. And the more we travel and see, the humbler we might feel as we become bigger people, seeing more points of view, values and ways to find joy than we used to know. Currently in Spain and seriously considering a move to Sweden.
Swedes are rude and arrogant. They are like a herd. No original thought no curiosity etc. I lived 6 years im Gavle.
You gotta move further north if you don’t like the rain in winter! During winter we get a lot of snow in the central and northern parts of the country… and the occasional northern lights. You’re missing out on some of the most beautiful parts of the country if you’re not venturing north too. It’s cool to see how much you’re enjoying Sweden though, I moved here in late 2019 and don’t want to leave either.

The historian in me is demanding me to just make a small correction.
Gothenburg is not named after a mountain. Göteborg, where Borg means fortress/keep, was named Fortress of the Geats/Goths (Götar), goths being the historical tribe of southern Sweden.
Gothenburg is in the province of Västergötland, Western Gothland.
HOWEVER... :) The mountain he is filming is called Ramberget, which later was used as inspiration by a Swedish immigrant in the U.S when creating his new family name Rambo. Now more famous as a breed of apples and a role played by Sylvester Stallone. Both the apple and chararcter name is directly linked to that very mounatain on Hisingen island in Gothenburg.
Edit: As Jonas Olsson points out, the mountain in the video is in fact NOT Ramberget , but a similar looking (at least in these pictures) mountain in Mölndal about 6km away.

I am a Sweden, and whilst I don't want to bash on my home country too much, it is not the place for everyone. Our culture will clash with some peoples culture, Swedes tend to be very socially reserved like Trav mentioned in the video. If you do manage to pierce through that part of it, you can definitely start loving it here. If you are very outgoing and naturally social, things will go well. Also, the best part of Sweden is definitely our commute. Let me attest to that.

There's a difference between being "reserved" and "unsocial", the reserved aspect is a virtue, the unsocial aspect is not. Swedes value too much of this anti-social/unsocial element.
The unsocial aspect is why suicide rates and loneliness is so common in Sweden.
Of all the different natinalities I have met, I have always felt a connection to the Canadians. Maybe it's their tendancies towards politeness and outspokenness, or maybe it's that chill in our blood talking to each other, but from one northern boi to another; we welcome you here, and thank you for your visit! I am another Canadian who has moved to Sweden about 15 months ago - Gothenburg specifically (so cool to see you moving around the city as I don't think it gets it due) and work in Kungsbacka coaching swimming. Loved your insights I am going to add a little of my experience.
You are very right about the small talk. But it is funny I don't know if it is because I am a novelty or just overall talkative I have found it pretty easy to get Swedes to chat and that has been a great surprise. I have heard that Gothenburg is very different than Stockholm and Malmo in that way.
Dead on that Gothenburg weather is like Vancouver, but it is hilarious about the rain (I grew up a lot of years in Regina so I know the Winnipeg weather and what you are used to). Moving from Vancouver though last year was the sunniest winter I have had in years! My wife (who is a Swede) called BS (she lived in Vancouver for 10 years too), so I looked it up and Vancouver gets on average a month more of rain than Gothenburg. Having said that it freaking rains sideways in Gothenburg!!! That took some getting used to.
Love that you showed the Circle K hotdogs!!! That is one of the first things that I tell people back home - they actually eat the hot dogs from Circle K (will always remind me of this Simpsons episode - ua-cam.com/video/dWC2DvAxBQY/v-deo.html). Even though I know they are good I haven't been able to bring myself to do it.
You left out (you may not know) the second professional soccer team in Gothenburg - BK Häcken. In fact they won their first all Svensk Championship this year. My wife works within the football club so I feel a little connected ;) Also on the football end they have Gothia Cup a youth soccer (sorry to all the Swedes for calling it soccer) tournament of 1700 teams it is wonderful madness!!!
Renting, yes it is expensive, but even worse is the wait. To get a firsthand apartment some people have been waiting up to 10 years!!!

@@Anna-bq8gl You can rent what they call second hand apartments, which means that you are basically renting from someone who is subletting. To get a firsthand apartment it can take 10 years. It was crazy enough to find a place that when we moved even though we weren't ready to (just because we didn't know where we wanted to live) we bought a place. Lucky for us we found a place we love and lucky for us we were in a situation where we could.
You mention 10 year waiting. I've seen close to 20 years, some folk get their kids from young, getting them ready for this :D

it was quite enjoyable to see so many familiar places from the perspective of someone who moved here so recently, many areas I've been trough hundreds of times and some places I've only been to a few times all with the eyes of someone from a different culture seeing things I myself might have missed or taken for granted.

Wow, I'm so glad to hear you took the time to embrace your new environment and the culture around you here. Missing your loved ones is not so easy during your own adjustment period, believe me the distance is not the thing that disturbs the most during longer environmental changes.
Thank you for all the good laughs you offer, when you describe things that are in our cities. While I, as a Swede, take these things more or less for granted. I feel a little ashamed when you so softly describe the abundance of the things around you, we are the lucky few.
Your entire video and voice has a natural flow and reminds me to open my eyes even more to see our open landscapes again, thank you so much for your reminder of what is all around us.
You're absolutely right that we Swedes don't like to chit-chat in the grocery store or something like that. Most Swedes plan their social time. If you live in a multi-storey building, you hardly talk to your neighbours, at best a simple Hello if you're lucky.
When we use the shuttle, bus, train, etc. Most people "stare" straight into nothingness through the window, or at best down at the phone/computer.
As a foreigner, it is more accepted to break our "social rules". Gothenburg as a city since its birth (before Christ of course) had contacts with foreign countries via shipping, for example trade in China. Most people in Gothenburg are helpful towards tourists or foreigners. If, as a Swede, I were to start asking the person I meet how her day has been, I would definitely get a look, she thinks I'm crazy.

I was born in Sweden, but I feel like I don't always fit in bc I'm naturally a super talk-friendly person. Ppl usually find me really nice and open. Some ppl are not used to it like you said in the video. Swedes are more reserved and not used to talking to strangers or being openly friendly or chatty. This can be hard for me as I'm naturally very friendly and like to talk to almost anyone. Ofc I understand that we can't talk anywhere and anytime or limitlessly, but I wish Swedes were a bit more open and easy to hit up chats just for fun and some nice conversations.
Oh I have the same experience but instead I just plan on moving to a more open country! It can get really depressing here if you’re a extrovert

Jag har varit en introvert person hela mitt liv - aldrig känt behov av att umgås med folk så mycket, men på sistone vill jag verkligen lära mig att tänka om. Jag håller ögonkontakt med folk på bussen tills de tittar bort (det är alltid lika kul att se) och jag startar konversationer med främlingar som kan verka meningslösa. Men alla gånger då jag gör detta lär jag mig själv att det faktiskt inte är så svårt att bete sig som en öppen person.
Om folk ser och hör mig sjunga på tåget till exempel, känner jag inte längre någon skam över det - för det är ju ändå sådant folk gör själva. Det känns bra att kunna vara sig själv.

MTR Express is what I took between Gothenburg and Stockholm, very fast and very comfortable. I was amazed by the history of Sweden, nearly 700 years old as a country something that makes the U.S. and Canada look like toddlers in history... Amazing stuff!

There are plenty of buildings in Stockholm that were built between in 1200-1500 which is pretty cool.

Great content and commentary! Getting out of North America and traveling the world is an eye opening experience wherever you go. And more than just traveling you have settled in a beautiful country for 2 years, developed good relationships and enjoy the local culture. I'm an American living in Hong Kong 12 years and I think it's time for a new adventure in Europe. Your video makes me want to visit and get a first hand look at Sweden and what it may have to offer. One thing about the Trams, when you get higher up in the country where I live, we don't have any trams sadly and public transportation drastically reduces in usefulness.
Train prices go up and you have to switch trains a lot depending on your destination. Still have semi-reliable busses in towns but trains become relegated to just between cities.
Which is a shame tbh, I soo badly want monorails...

What a nice video! It made my swedish boyfriend a little homesick :) We both live in the Netherlands now and the dutchie in me chuckled at the praise for the transportation system. My experience with it wasn't good outside of some major cities, but we're quite spoiled here. My favourite parts of Sweden are the forests, woodcabins and ofcourse having a fika, it's a beautiful country!

Haha i agree, i'm dutch and i lived in the swedish countryside in 2018/19 and i struggled a lot with the public transport, there would be 3 busses between 7 and 9 in the morning going to the city ("city", it had 10000 inhabitants), and 2 in the afternoon, latest going like 16.30, then from the city to home again the latest would go at 17.00, i hated being dependent on someone to have to bring me places all the time because the busses and trains were shit, at least in terms of how often they'd go, otherwise they were fine. I would love to move to Sweden again but i think i'll have to get my drivers lisence first haha

Glad you liked it! People in Gothenburg are different than Stockholm and more open to chatting etc. in my opinion.
I just moved from the UK to Gothenburg. I am not complain about the rain here at all. In the UK you can easily get 2 month rain none stop. The weather is so much better here in Gothenburg except the longer dark hours in the winter.

Most english men/women are silenced pretty quick when you give them the punchline: the name England is from the old swedish word änglaland, meaning "the land where angels dwell". I live an hour west of Stockholm and it's all forest. Pine trees for hundreds of kilometers with small towns in between. It's always been nice to travel south where it's more open but what blew me away was the north. You must travel above the arctic circle and see some of our mountains. It blew me away! Nice blog btw :)

Actually for me as Central European this infinite vastness of seemingly untouched forests in the south of Sweden was what blew me away. We don't have something like that here. I just discovered Sweden as travel destination this year (just spent two weeks in Östergötlands län) and now we already have plans where to go next year, somwhere in Västernorrlands län.

I played hockey in Montreal as a youth and live in Sweden so I think this video really hits home...
but...
It's common that a person who moves to a different country compares the new country favorably to the former. In fact, there are myriad research articles written on the subject. The love/hate relation occurs in distinct periods. I remember when I moved from the US to Poland in the mid-90's, everything was so much better in Wroclaw than DC. And when I moved to Stockholm at the end of the 90's! Whoa!
But one must remember that this is very similar to "being in love". When you're first "in love", everything about the person is great. Not just great but way, way better than your ex. Over time, one "falls out of love" - but maybe still loves - this object or person. It's the same for new cultures.
So yes, I've lived in Stockholm for 24 years now and I think it's a great place to live. But there are tons (TONS!!!!) of things that are way better in the US. Or at least in New England, where I'm from. I can't speak for the rest of the country - which is freaking huge btw. And Canada is even bigger than the US.

I have no idea how I stumbled onto your channel but I watched like 8-9 in a row while relaxing after work. Love this channel! I was a goalie myself back in the day so I'm reliving my youth watching this. The practices and just general vlogging is great. You do such a good job of making a fair representation of our country as well. I randomly came across this video and as someone who lives in Gothenburg and travels a lot in Sweden and Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark), many of the things said, here are pretty accurate BUT... there are STILL many hidden things that you would be surprised to find out once you settle, especially if you are just a regular expat/immigrant (not someone who plays for a hockey team, etc.) There is no doubt that Sweden is beautiful but but for tourists, it's an expensive place to visit, worth it though if you love nature. For expats, it's a struggle unless you are an Engineer, Software Developer,IT (especially in Gothenburg). Like any other places, there are pros and cons.
Can you expand what these things are? Thank you very much for watching Shaira. Sweden is awesome and yes, playing hockey here is something that gives me an unusual perspective but I do know I am beyond happy there :)
@@trav4oilers Where do I even begin? Lol! I have a lot of expat friends here both non-EU citizens and EU citizens. If you go to a lot of these expat get together, you will hear a lot about the unexpected struggles of ordinary expats & immigrants here. Let's start with the basic things - 1. Opening a bank account ( EU citizens should be allowed to open any bank account in EU accdg. to law unless convicted of a money laundering crime,etc.) but not in Sweden. You need to have a "job contract" which is hard if you are a freelancer or let's say someone who already has savings & money & doesn't need to work for a while BUT here's the tricky part - "it depends which bank you go to and who will handle you" . If you are lucky and you come across the bank staff who are in the mood then you can get an account. Lol! 2. Booking doctor's appointment - There's a joke among expats - "Just don't get sick" One time I was talking to a German friend and she was so excited to finally get a doctor's appointment! (She only got it because she asked her company doctor to help her!) 3. Job Market - As mentioned, if you are not an Engineer, IT specialist, Software Developer or in any of those related fields, finding a job is a struggle. For a country that speaks good English, fluency in the Swedish language is a must and even if the position doesn't require it, the chances of that job going to a Swede is higher. 4. Race Pay Gap - Everyone talks about pay gap between men and women, but no one talks about race pay gap. Swedes are generally paid higher than other nationalities. I kind of understand that, but if someone is doing the same job and work,then why pay someone more or less because of their "race"? 5. Hidden racism - Generally, Swedes are nice people! But hidden racism is always there. It's like sugarcoated because the country has accepted a lot of refugees. It's not even about being white or something. For example, my French friend works in a Fashion company and she says - there are two couches - one for the Swedes and one for the non-Swedes and that kind of makes her feel not so welcome. I think there was no ill intention in that, but because a lot of Swedes tend to stick with themselves, this comes off differently to others. One of my Filipina friends said no one talks to her at work because most of the staff are Swedes. She ended up getting therapy bec of that work environment. * As for me, I'm pretty lucky to have very good connection with Swedes. I have a few Swedish friends of my own who are amazing, but most expats don't (unless it's their workmates) These things happen everywhere in the world though, so it's not just Sweden but I think it would be nice to know that befor someone moves here. Some of the people I know said they had totally different expectations then reality kicked in too late so they didn't know how to deal with it. It pays to be informed! Tack

Fun and interesting video! I'm from Luleå (way up north in Sweden) and I moved in the opposite direction, to Edmonton, Canada, seven years ago. Even though there are differences of course I also find a lot of simlarities between Sweden and Canada and Swedes and Canadiens. Just recently became a Canadian citizen and I'm so happy that I live in Canada and not in the US 🙂

This is an amazing video which represents a lot of good things about Sweden. Glad you like it. A few things i know you miss out on living in southern parts of Sweden is the great winters of northern Sweden, its way better than the rainy shit winters in southern Sweden(sorry 80% of our population).
The summers on the countryside is amazing in all of Sweden. Boatlife is a big thing during summer aswell, not to forget the caravan camper lifestyle.
Also don't forget something else that is really amazing about Sweden "Allemansrätten". Its quite unique. You can camp more or less anywhere, you can pick mushrooms, berries and so on in the forests legally.
Anyway, hope this vid keeps getting attention!

Sweden and Finland were my favourite places to stay. Prices are crazy but you get through it.

My Grandparents moved from Sweden to Minnesota around 1920. From crappy weather to crappy cold weather. As soon as I was 18, I moved south and now live in the Bergs of New Mexico. My personality is still somewhat Swedish. I still play hockey, been playing since I was 8, and I eat a lot of fish and shrimp. But, I live alone so I don't have to take my shoes off when I get home from work.

@@trav4oilers literally all Swedes that did not end up in New York or Chicago went to Minnesota since it reminded them of their home + that the land was dirt-free to get back then. Some went across the border into Canada as well but they are just a few.
There is a reason to why the football team from Minneapolis is called the Vikings.
Things I usually take for granted I'm now really thankful for.

I have several English friends, some really tried to learn Swedish, but it is tough, because as soon as they open their mouth and that awkward Swedish comes so many just defaults to English because they are so used to it and/or they want to show off. I had one friend who lived here for ten years, he went to SFI classes, and he managed to learn Swedish, but he almost exclusively conversed in English, because that was simpler. Which lead to me talking Swedish to him and him answering in English.

@Collen Flarity I’ve never been to USA but i feel the same, up until the turn of the century living in USA looked like a dream come true where you can achieve anything. Until like 2015 i always wanted to visit to see it for myself, not anymore.
One HUGE fact I like about sweden, (being your canadian you probably didn't consider) is their "universal health care!!" As an american, the thought of healthcare being treated as a universal human RIGHT, is amazing to me!! I'm considering the possibility of moving there one day, or moving to germany norway, or austrailia.

Just watched that whole thing this really makes me wanna see sweden for myself i really wanna see a shl game someday. I have watched all the major professional leagues in the US (NHL, AHL, ECHL). Sweden seems like a really nice play and honestly I'd wanna expierence sweden for period of time not as long as you per say but gonna get involved in there culture for a time.

Fun Fact: The name 'Rambo' in the Rambo-movies comes from an area in Gothenburg called just that - Rambo. Some Swedish-American in Stalones friend/relative-circle being named Rambo lead to them using the name, because it sounded cool!

It is so much fun to see you in my hometown Göteborg. My family moved to the states when I was 6yrs old. It's fun for me when I go back to see the relatives.
