I’ve been using the coupler for years now. I typically use it to facilitate gravity filtration. No hoses or tubes. I fill my Cnoc bag with dirty water, attach my filter, then the coupler and a clean water bottle. Hang it from a branch. Go about my camp chores, then 5-10 minutes later, I have clean water to drink and cook with. So simple and easy. Just make sure you unscrew the receiving bottle a bit so you don’t get vapor lock. For back flushing, I fill a clean water bottle, attach it to the filter, then throw it on the ground and stomp on it! Works amazing! My Squeeze is going on 5 years now and is just as fast and effective as the first time I used it. Hands down the best $3 I’ve ever spent.
NICE! I hadn't even thought about how easy it would make gravity filtering. I am DEFINITELY going to try that. I used to have an old Katydyn gravity filter I would take backpacking. It was seriously so easy. This could be the same thing, but smaller and lighter. Genius! Thank you!
Another great upgrade I have done to my Sawyer is replacing the nylon washer with a rubber hose washer. They are super cheap, at every hardware store and no more leaks or compressing the nylon washer on to the top of a bottle.
Literally just watched this video and ordered 4 of them. 2 for me and 2 for my wife. Yes, we lose things so 2 each is a start. I didn't even know these existed. This is a game changer!
I use that coupler to filter into my clean water bottle and reduce the guessing game of getting it into the bottle. Don't tighten it all the way as it needs an air gap to work
I definitely need to try that! It's always a bit of an acrobatic act trying to hold the bottle with the feet, squeeze the bag with one hand, and hold the filter with the other. Smart to use this coupling to just make the entire process easier! Another person commented and said they use it to filter with gravity. Just connect the cnoc or platypus bag and your water bottle, then let gravity pull the water through. Definitely going to try that!
Best 3$ you'll spend if you use a squeeze. I primarily use mine as a gravity filter. I carry a 3 liter CNOC dirty water bag and hang it from a carabiner and cord, attach the squeeze with the blue coupler and clean smart water bottle and let gravity do the work while I set up camp changing clean bottles as required. You do need to loosen the smart water bottle connection a thread or two to let air out while gravity filtering. Also works to back flush the squeeze as you mentioned in your vid. I carry the 3 liter CNOC so I only have to fetch water once for dinner, breakfast and hiking the next day. Making only one trip for dirty water is definitely appreciated when there is a long downhill slog to get to the water source at camp after a long day.
I’m going to sound like a broken record but the Platypus quick draw has a nozzle that seals really well on most bottles for back-flushing. And I’m really sorry for recommending the Fillo. I still love it.
🤣🤣 Steven, I have honestly thought about trying the quickdraw almost every time I pull out my Sawyer because of your awesome video about it and I see it pop up in so many of your other videos! It's on my list of things to try, but that list is LONG. But are you saying that the quickdraw basically has this coupling built into the filter? If so, you may have just moved it to the top of the list of things to try! I have heard from a lot of people that they love the Nemo! Different gear for different people! Just glad we can all find something that works for us!
@@DoseofDirt it doesn’t screw onto the platypus but it does create an air tight seal when you hold it tight against a bottle. Similar to the sports cap on the Sawyer but better. It’s so tight I sometimes have trouble squeezing water into my bottle because air pressure builds up from the seal.
@@MyLifeOutdoors Does the world need another Sawyer vs Platypus comparison? Probably not. Am I going to order a platypus, try it, and make a video? You better believe it!😆
That is the 1st accessory I bought for my squeeze, just for backflushing. The second one I bought was the quick release adapter for filling my bladders without taking them out of the pack.
I have the original coupler from my first Sawyer Squeeze. I am not sure why they stopped providing them when you purchase a new filter as they pretty much include everything else they used to. As others have said you can also use it for gravity filter your water. That is ok at the end of the day and you have or setting up camp for the night. During the day when I am still hiking I use it when filtering my water as well. I fill my Cnoc dirty water bag, attach the filter, attach the coupler and the the clean water bottle (make sure you don't tighten it completely to let air escape) and and squeeze the water through the filter as you normally would. This keeps you from having to carry the tube, having to hold the clean bottle with you feet, and/or accidentally knocking you clean bottle over and spilling you half filtered water.
Makes sense they used to include it! Wish they still did, because it makes EVERYTHING work better with the Sawyer. I haven't tried it for gravity filtering yet, but definitely want to. Seems like it would work excellent and take all the work out of it! Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Duct tap is EXTREMELY versatile! I didn't have any on my most recent trip, but did have about 60% of a role of athletic tape (was terrified I would sprain an ankle or something 50 miles into the 100 mile trip). Ended up using it to fix my trekking pole out on trail (didn't need it for any ankles though! 😆)
I remember the tornado tube! Not sure I ever got it to do the tornado between the 2 liter bottles though... I hadn't even thought about how this exact thing is probably available from a lot of retailers under some other use or label. It's a super standard piece of equipment.
Thanks for the tip, I am buying a couple for sure. I have been using the smart water bottle sport cap to backflush and I have the same complaints. This tip will solve the problem. And I also bought the same pillow and I don't like it and will never bring it on an other trip. Plus it's unnecessarily bulky. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, Mike! Glad to hear I'm not the only one not singing the praises of the Nemo Fillo. Just didn't work for me! Ya, the sport cap technically works, but in reality just doesn't do a good job. This little coupling is a winner! Thanks for watching!
NICE! As I was thinking about the coupling yesterday I wondered if that would work. Now I definitely want to try it! Do you have some sort of flip top or something you screw into the coupling to keep i closed? Or do you just put the squeeze with the coupling on top right into your pack?
Nice! definitely pass the word along! I tried the BeFree but my slowed WAY down after just a few trips an I haven't been able to backflush it successfully to get the flow rate back up. Yours still working well?
@@DoseofDirt .... Here in Florida I do this when dealing with dirty water. Amazon has the ( 1 Micron 4"x8" Singed Polyester Felt Filter Bag PESP3S Size 3 ) filter bags. @@DoseofDirt yeah, it makes you think about it every time you throw the thing on!! Lol. And it's another thing you need to wash by hand. The mini def has a slower flow rate than the squeeze but I've had it for a few yrs and still going strong! 👍
Hey Jeff, great video. I am currently using a gravity platypus ( mostly because I take it scout back packing) but, I have recently considered getting a Sawyer squeeze just because it would be lighter and simpler.
