You are speaking my language! I grew up in Pennsylvania and this is my pot pie! Momma made this for me every birthday. We always used leftover ham instead of chicken. But I never have understood what everyone else calls pot pie...those are meat pies! I grew up around the Amish so I totally get it! Thanks for teaching everyone the recipe!!!!
Me too Veggie L. A., I still live here! My Mum & Granny used chicken and tossed in just a few peas & diced carrot. Now I'm drooling thinking about it 🤤😁. One of my fondest childhood memories was watching them make it and me 'stealing' bites of just-cut dough. We never thought about the raw egg in noodles or eggnog back then and no one ever got sick.
I love watching videos of people with different backgrounds seeing how food connects us and how the same thing is called something different. To me this isn't chicken pot pie but a variation of chicken ans dumplings
Grew up in nj outside of philadelphia and this was a staple in our home too..we also added carrots and the veggies were removed and served on the side..waste not, want not!
my Gram, born 1902 in Hanover PA, made it pretty much the same but she used a whole chicken, the dark meat and skin do add flavor and she called it chicken pot boi, sometimes she added a pinch of saffron if she felt loose with the pocketbook
My recipe is a lot different. My "gravy" has more viscosity instead of being a clear broth. I don't use potatoes either. We make mashed potatoes to go with this. I think I may try your addition of an egg in the Pot Pie though. We also use a whole chicken, simmered until the broth is very flavorful.
Looks good, but I am sure your grandmom had the pot boiling when you put in the pot pie noodles. Also if you keep more flour on the noodles it will thicken your broth so it is not so thin. I don't add potatoes only a chopped onion, then serve with mashed potatoes
I grew up in Pa and I have even heard of Beef Pot pie and Peach Pot pie chicken pot pie like this would be a pretty tasty joke to play on someone even i would think meat pie if someone said chicken pot pie
You have to use your hands. You make a well so that you don't overwork the dough. You work it from the center out, not all jumbled together like you did.
As my italian Nona & Ma did, so I’ve been making pasta of some sort all my 50 adult years and I make the dough exactly like Mom’s Messy Kitchen does with a spoon, hate the yucky feel of raw eggs on my fingers , and you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference. What they don’t know won’t hurt them! Came here for the recipe of what I remember from my college years in Reading PA. Thanks Mom’s M K. ❤️
Was so confused when 1st learned of penn dutch chicken pot pie because its NOODLES & not American pot pie as we know them... +the emphasis on words 'potpie' are different than american 'pot pie' sound. IF you listen to her speak the name of dish out loud... sounding diff than way most Ameticans say: pot pie. the I made once in life.. it's a very good chicken soup with what I would call 'huge noodles'. Its a regional food and not know across most of America.
Looks fantastic cannot wait to make it
This is the correct way to make chicken pot pie. My German grandma always made it when we visited.
this is the only true definitive pot pie to me. grew up on it so maybe I'm biased lol

My gram made this!!! Such a uniquely delightful and soul-warming dish.
Looks amazing!
I'm from Central PA and have Amish heritage. A big HELLO.
The potatoes help hold the noodles down, motley for those who like thick noodles.
Looks delicious
This looks so good!! I'm gonna try this real soon!! Thank you and your family for the recipe
This looks so good!!
Looks great! My mom made homemade noodles when I was little so delicious, I miss it alot
❤️❤️❤️

My grandmother used to make this exactly this way when I was little!!! Soooo delicious!!!

I make it the same way, I live in Amish country
Grew up in nj outside of philadelphia and this was a staple in our home too..we also added carrots and the veggies were removed and served on the side..waste not, want not!
Use pizza cutter to cut squares. Works great. My mother used one cup flour and one egg for each person. I too find it great to allow to sit in air.
my Gram, born 1902 in Hanover PA, made it pretty much the same but she used a whole chicken, the dark meat and skin do add flavor and she called it chicken pot boi, sometimes she added a pinch of saffron if she felt loose with the pocketbook
Yummy. I some from the grocery store, it was not so good
Yes looks good but my mom made ham and and The broth was thick how she do it..?
Down here in TEXAS, we call that Chicken and Dumplin's!! That looks sooo gooooood!!!
Looks more like chicken and dumplings that a pot pie to me.
I think the layering of potatoes and dough is to keep the dough from settling into a big thicl lump as it cooks.
My mom made her dough thin, but her mom made the dough closer to yours which I preferred.
What's a pa pie?
raised on this still make it
Can you tell me about how long the noodles need to cook? Thank you.
I boil them until tender. They will puff up a bit too. It really depends on your noodle size and thickness!
How do you know when the dough feels right?
Lol, with the measurement I gave you it should be perfect! Not too sticky - not too dry!
I need to make this for about 100 people. Really. how many will this recipe feed??

Here we would call this "chicken and dumplings".

This is what we grew up calling chicken potpie in PA not a pie shell stuffed with chicken . It's only missing the carrots
