Vincent Price the Tim Curry of yesteryear - he’ll do anything for money, but dammit he’s going to put all his effort into the role, whether it’s murderous sculptor or cartoon warlock.
Vincent is a delight in anything he's in. I'm particularly fond of "Theatre of Blood," where he plays an actor who murders a bunch of theatre critics using Shakespeare-inspired methods. Incredible.
That's a favorite of my mom's. Scary stuff, that movie. Gruesome and violent deaths, which is pretty fitting since Shakespeare wrote some gory stuff. It took myself two or three attempts to watch it all the way through that movie was so scary.
I know have the burning desire for Clive to review two of Vincent's.... greatest (?) movies - The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine. Does anyone know if Clive has a Patreon page?
Fun fact, there's a 90's remake of House of Wax. It's called Wax Mask (which people still say is based on a Leroux story, even though the story mentioned by the producers doesn't exist), was originally written by Lucio Fulci and Dario ARgento with some revisions by director Sergio Stivaletti, has some good effects and acting, and is all around a wonderful addition to the legacy of these films.
We really need a Vincent Price night for this show. The Dr. Phibes movies could make a nice double feature. I'd say The Tingler and House on Haunted Hill for a Vincent Price night, but that could fall under a William Castle night.
Embalming fluid preserves decently well, and the wax would keep bacteria away, so its very possible it would sort of mummify the corpses(albiet they would be burnt from the dip to begin with)
If I had a nickel for every UA-camr I like having an alternate persona who wears a suit and tie, is classic horror-themed, and has an aesthetic based on anaglyphic 3D… I’d only have two nickels but it’s *weird* that it’s happened twice
The great thing about this movie is that really set Price up for the rest of his career. He was completely all in on the horror and shock films. He felt reinvigorated by the film. Also that fire? Completely real. Went totally out of control on set and they kept rolling. So Price's concern is more than a little real.
His first stab at this kind of role was in the appropriately named Shock, but yeah, House of Wax and House On Haunted Hill got him started. People forget that he actually started off as a stage actor with 20 years in film before that.
Well, this is going to be fun. I went to a wax museum once, they had a model of The Predator set up to 'vanish' behind a mirror in the jungle setting, genuinely made me jump for a second.
I know it’s probably a coincidence, but the imagery of the main character of Nightmare in Wax reminds me of Arcana/Pandora from Yugioh Duel Monsters. The whole “scarred by an accident and rejecting the women he loves” thing. The doll of Arcana’s lover that Marik uses to manipulate him also feels very “house of wax.”
Honestly, with the weird way that certain foreign horror movies get popular in Japan would not surprise me in the slightest that turned out to be intentional
Man, I wish you had the time in your schedule to do a proper double-feature length show like this. It is clear that the idea of Horror Host suits you so well.
I had expected Sinclair to compare Vincent Prince's House of Wax with the remake of House of Wax. The remake has Paris Hilton, and placing the incomparible Vincent Prince with her would have surely brought some chuckles.
I love Vincent Price, though I feel he's just as great at comedy as he is horror, and the comedy stuff is woefully underrated. Even if you just check out his episode of The Muppet Show, the 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, or The Great Mouse Detective, there's some great stuff to be had. His rendition of "You've got a Friend" from The Muppet Show is classic. Too bad it was left off the DVD release, but it's a simple YT search. Dunno if its in tact on Disney +.
I remember one scene that got played of him as a film producer where he gave this increasingly unhinged dressing down of an employee that ends with him shouting. It's freaking comedy gold...Daffy Duck couldn't have done it better.
I wonder how familiar Batman writers are with these films. They're like a combination of Two-Face and Clayface. Though now I'm kinda wondering what a Vincent Price Two-Face would be like.
I love House of Wax, I also love Vincent Price because even if the movie he’s in is bad he doesn’t turn in a bad performance. Plus he is just so damn charming.
I would love to see you cover "Death Becomes Her." That and the Zemeckis directed Amazing Stories episode "Go to the Head of the Class" would be one great pairing.
Wouldn’t surprise me if he eventually calls you in a future episode and tells you he appreciates your review and sends you a gift of some kind…stark contrast to that he sent explosives to the critic for mocking his iambic pentameter in thief and the cobbler
My College actually screened House of Wax for us, mostly emphasizing it as a curiosity of the old 3D movie boom (at the time the more recent experiment in 3D was fairly new) and as an example of "exploitation horror." This really makes it seem they sold it short- I should check it out again sometime
@@nonspiderweb sorry, "Exploitation Horror-" auto correct. Put it in quotation marks cause I'm not sure my professor was accurate in his categorisation on this one
I was expecting this to be Mystery of The Wax Museum (The original) and House of Wax (The remake with Vincent Price), but I'm glad I was at the very least half-right. This was a very fun watch, especially since House of Wax is a favorite classic horror movie of mine. Right up there with The Blob with Steve McQueen. I would always try and get House of Wax recorded on my DVR (back when I still had cable) every Halloween on Turner Classic Movies. One of the reasons October was my favorite month. Anyway, good work as always, Clive!
So in Nightmare in Wax, the Space Mutiny Commander went Renagade on Paragon Pictures. Can't wait for Clive to talk about Hell House LLC. That series is bizarre.
5:55 Well since you're asking, I did just watch a horror movie from Thailand called The Medium. It's a co-production with South Korea and it's a found footage movie about demonic possession. Pretty damn good as far as these things go.
NGL, I expected the second Healthier Living Through Horror to be about sound and picture quality. Like "When test screening your new movie, make sure the audience isn't a wax sculpture of an audience." or something like that. Either way, an excellent episode. Now we wait for may, then go to Hell (house)!
I've always had an odd yen for "living wax museum" stories, whether it's HOUSE OF WAX and its predecessor as shown here, a subplot in that one Italian HERCULES movie, or elsewhere, such as comic books and short stories. Heck one of my favorite post-Gould, Collins-era DICK TRACY stories was a sort of homage to both of the wax museum movies described here, with Putty Puss keeping Tracy paralyzed with drugs and on display as he slowly starves to death. Fun times. Oh, here's a goofy old horror movie for you. CHAMBER OF HORRORS (with a guest appearance by Wayne Rogers) was originally intended as a pilot for a TV show itself called "House of Wax", about a late 19th century house of horrors whose owners wind up investigating the cold cases that they make diorama of. It was basically meant to be WILD WILD WEST but for Hitchcock enthusiasts rather than Bond fans.
I was honestly looking forward to you ripping into the House of Wax remake. I unironically loved it when I first got into horror movies (I think it was one of the first horror movies i owned actually. House of Wax and House of 1000 corpses both on VHS) and would love ot hear someone remind me how bad it actually is.
I'm seeing a few parallels between House of Wax and Darkman. I know Sam Raimi said Dark man was meant to be an homage to classic monster movies mixed with superheroes. So I wonder if House of Wax was a major inspiration.
Honestly, when Cameron Mitchell wa s mentioned, I kept of Lieutenant Colonel Cameron "Cam" Mitchell from Stargate. So imagine my surprise that I didn't see Ben Browder.
Any chance the "I Am Legend" trilogy would appear on this show? The first also stars Vincent Price and is a pretty decent pic. And the Charlton Heston and Will Smith versions are pretty good, too.
Though all of these would likely be pretty highbrow for this show, still hoping to see "Ari Aster and His Inspirations Night" on the wheel at some point.
There's a movie that's sort of wax terror but more mannequin terror that features on Rifftrax, Tourist Trap. It's pretty weird and stupid, but in a funny way.
The wax mask disguise always felt odd to me. Yeah, the reveal when it shatters is legit startling, but then you wonder how it was able to emote in the first place Still, damn fun movie.
Is it me or is there a noticeable red tint in all of Lewis' on-camera scenes (the intro, title card, & clips looked fine)? I also noticed the tint in the Just Imagine Stan Lee's Justice League video that came out before this. I even screwed with my TV settings to make sure it wasn't on my end. Did Lewis get a new camera recently?
Not sure why the Just Imagine video would have a red tint, but the LNDF ones definitely do, partially deliberately because of all the red in the footage itself. I clean it up a bit and I accidentally forgot to put the 8mm filter over the footage of this one.
I wonder if Lewis actually chooses his Late Night Double Feature reviews with the wheel spin, or if he just films it landing on the the next one he has planned to give the illusion that Clive does.
I do choose them with the wheel spin (and then annoyingly have to get a shot of it landing on it again for close up, which can take a few minutes), though I am preparing for the day when I choose not to do one - it'll eventually happen if, say, I'm scheduled to do two found footage episodes in a row, or two J-Horror episodes, etc. I don't want too much samey content in a row, the same way I do with AT4W and alternating companies.
