The thing about the demon being more of a physical threat in the prequel than the original could've worked if the prequel established that the possession there and/or an encounter during the intermediate time weakened the demon.
I wonder if there'd be any way to fuse these two films together via editing & create the best version. That SNL sketch was hilarious!! “The bed is on my foot!!” Apparently Tarantino also used a rejected score that Ennio Morricone composed for John Carpenter’s The Thing. Also about that Ninth Configuration story: that book actually came out years before the original Exorcist novel under the title Twinkle Twinkle, Killer Cane. It was originally a more comedic story (which was actually William Peter Blatty’s normal style, believe it or not). But after The Exorcist became a huge hit, he actually re-wrote the book as The Ninth Configuration, making it a bit more serious and adding the connection to The Exorcist. He also wrote, produced, and directed a film adaptation of the book in 1980, and he even won the golden globe for best screenplay for it.
I like that you reviewed them back to back, giving us context for both films while also showcasing their strengths and weaknesses. While Exorcist movies aren’t really my thing, you had some really cool insights to them. Reminds me of when Diamanda reviewed them both in different personas with differing commentary. Good times.
7:21 - 7:53 Speaking of, now that Fox canceled The Exorcist series, Lewis, would you ever give your thoughts on the two seasons that show had? I liked the first season overall, sorta denying Exorcist 2: The Heretic as canon, and jumping in as a direct sequel from the first movie to bookend Regan McNeil's story. Personally, I thought Geena Davis did amazing as older Regan, struggling to finally put an end to the evil that is now torturing her through her daughters. The second season was also great, focusing on the two priests in their cross-country crusade to solve more demonic possession cases, and John Cho as the new possessed character also did a wonderful job. I don't wanna make assumptions, but maybe John Cho's dramatic chops in the second season may have been part of what got him his role in Cowboy Bebop, as well as his other roles in Star Trek, Fast-forward, and Searching.
Interesting as always, thanks for this. I'd be interested to see you covering American Werewolf In London at some point, likely pairing it with American Werewolf in Paris - Some wonderful prosthetic work going on in that film, both for the werewolf transformation scenes and the zombies.

I’d love Linkara to look at the Exorcist series. Father Tomas and Marcus fit the small town Americana vs the supernatural forces the 2000’s were going for.

When I finally got around to watching these back-to-back, BEGINNING was actually the more entertaining movie. I also think Skarsgård's acting improved. He was kind of wooden in DOMINION. I guess with the re-shoots he got more comfortable in the role.
I thought that "The Ninth Configuration" was based on a book called Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane. I watched a review of it over on Welcome To The Basement. Upon further research, it does appear to be a "spiritual" sequel to The Exorcist.
Well if you recall the Welcome to the Basement episode Twinkle,Twinkle, Killer Kane and the ninth configuration are books written by the same author who wrote the original exorcist novel.
I think Dominion is a better overall prequel. One of the things I like about it is that it doesn't have the Pazazu statue in the secret temple cave. Given that this is in Kenya and the Pazazu statue is from Mesopotamia (Iraq).
There is certainly a trend in horror to make bad sequels and prequels to good movies, most of Clyde's picks seems to be like that. Still, no sequel or prequel will ever be as scary as "Highlander II", the thought of seeing that movie again is truly horrifying.
So..... with the prevalence of Fan-Edits of movies, would you say this could work as one of those? If the right scenes from The Beginning were edited into Dominion?
I still haven't seen it, but at this point I feel like it wouldn't be as scary even taken apart from all the jokes about it. My mom said it was so scary it gave her nightmares for probably a week or so.

10:51 - 12:25 When it comes to Renny Harlin's work, I'm half and half on him directing this. Normally, you wouldn't think this style would fit the Exorcist series, given his work on action films like Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and The Long Kiss Goodbye. However, he has also made adequately satisfying popcorn horror flicks with Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and Deep Blue Sea. So trying to make a conventional horror out of something that started off with slow tension and an eerie atmosphere, building up suspense and drama through minimalist effects and acting is gonna feel off when you're getting low budget cgi and over-the-top jump scares thrown in your face, but I agree that it does a better job of scaring you. Compared to what Shraeder had in mind, it doesn't fit the original Exorcist, but it does fine as its *own* Exorcist story. Maybe if the characters names had been changed, like the "Merrin" in this film was not named Merrin, and he was a different priest who went up against the demon Pazuzu before Merrin, or if the story's time setting was set before or during WWII, like something Overlord (2018) did with their zombie premise, the film could've worked better. In regards to Shraeder's interpretation, it does follow the design that the original Exorcist gave us in '71, but it delivers the scares late or out of order. I haven't seen much of Shraeder's work outside of the Cat People remake, but I do admire a lot of his writing work for other directing talents, particularly Martin Scorsese. By the end, what they did with Merrin going up against the possessed boy felt similar to what they did in Exorcist 2: The Heretic, and that's not a good thing. I'm just wondering when they're gonna bring in the bad cgi locusts. In the end, it's a pick your poison type of deal; bombastic and shocking or surreal and methodical?
I was expecting to see this story about exorcising Kokomo (James Earl Jones character from the Heretic) but it seems they are trying to ignore it. Do they even call the demon pazuzu?
The demon doesn't possess Cheche at the start of the baptism. He's already possessed, which is why his body is changing. That is simply the moment the demon reveals itself.
I think that prequel would have gone better if they names it something different and we could all go Pazuzu? Pazuzu! Because we could have been questing because of the guys name but felt that we put something together in the end. Maybe IDK I can beardly remember the movie.

The Dominion fared much better in terms of commentary, but suffered as a result of being mostly the same movie. Also a fair reminder that 9 times out of 10, a prequal is a bad idea.
Lookin' forward to wax wonders.
Has anyone tried to combine the two films into one big fan edit?
It seems moarte likes someone for once, a horror movie reviewer of all things…are you sure he’s dead?
Kinda sad you left out the *OTHER* Exorcist sequel. :(
I saw the Exorcist prequels and they were all right not as good as the original film but a whole lot better then 2: The Heretic.
I didn't find anything about The Beginning scary. Loud, yes. Scary, no. I found it even less effective than The Heretic, which is really saying something. Dominion, on the other hand, retained some of the effective low-key psychological horror of the first and third films, even if it has nothing to match their more shocking moments.
