  • In this video I tell you about what sets Scarlet Heroes apart from other TTRPGs. If you're either a D&D player in search of a more elegant and simple system (like I was) or a solo adventurer trying to keep things manageable (also like me), Scarlet Heroes is a great game to check out.
Here, I focus on the system's character creation and combat so you will have a good idea if this is the roleplay for you.
    Chapters:
    00:00 Intro
    03:44 Start
    04:03 Character Creation/Classes
    05:57 Frey Die
    06:40 Traits (skills)
09:56 The Combat system (+ Frey die revisited)
14:22 A few words about adapting monsters
14:58 Other rules and features I did not cover
    16:06 Conclusion
    17:20 Outro
If you want to learn how to adapt materials from D&D, here's a video for you:
    • Put D&D Monsters and C... . (Part 2)
And if you want to see the comparison with Exemplars and Eidolons and Godbound OR if you want to learn about the solo gaming section:
    • Comparing Scarlet Hero... . (Part 3)
Stay tuned for the next videos:
    3. In the third episode, I will give you a more personal review and discuss how I have used the system with Mythic GME. I will also share some tips and tricks I found along the way, and will compare the game to two other systems from the same publishers
    Thanks for watching!

For anyone wondering how to scale encounter difficulty in Scarlet Heroes, p. 127 and 129 provide two useful tables. These are "Encounter Found" and "Statistics for Unique or "Unstatted Foes". The "T" in those tables stand for your Heroes' Level. Meanwhile, page 121 provides a table for "urban encounters" and p.122 provides guidelines for wilderness encounters.

Thank you! And that's a pretty good idea. I'll think about making a video on that topic

Thanks for this review mate. Been wanting to run a campaign for a while now but time commitments just won't allow for a fully fleshed out dnd one. This however, is definately what I'm looking for, cheers. :-)

The "Defy Death" mechanic is as important as the modified combat rolls, I think, in that it allows a character class a chance to perform an action they normally couldn't do, which helps deal with a smaller party. For example, a fighter trying to pick a lock or a magic-user trying to provide some sort of healing each will have a chance to succeed (at a cost) when otherwise they may not. Excellent video!

Thank you, and very good point! It comes in handy especially when you are playing through an adventure module and the book expects you to have a full party.

My two favorite ways to play solo d&d are Scarlet Heroes or 4e+Mythic. Both setups allow for a more "gamey" experience, so I'm less likely to just drop the game when I'm not feeling creative at the moment.

One thing that I've wondered about this system is, is there practically going to be any challenge in most fights? That is, I genuinely do not know. On one hand your character is cutting down ogres with a couple of blows like nothing, but on the other you only have that one character (or at most a small handful of characters). It kind of interests me what one character in Scarlet Heroes can do when compared to a party of character on the same level in another OSR type game.

I find that you can pretty quickly get a feel for how many/ how strong a monster you need to fight to get a challenge. So far, in my experience, if you are playing a fighter you can handle plenty of monsters of your HD or lower, but when you start fighting monsters that are one or multiple HDs stronger than you, then you are in for a challenge. You can definitely get challenging fights with Scarlet Heroes but it's almost like you are starting multiple levels ahead of a normal OSR or D&D character. Level 1 in Scarlet Heroes is much easier than Level 1 in those other games lol

I second Val’s comment. Played SH for a little while now, and while the melee-based characters do feel like they’re mowing down enemies of their HD and lower, you’re the GM in a solo setting, you set how many enemies come at you and how intelligently they fight, you set the difficulty, and it’s /supposed/ to feel more like a classic heroic fantasy such as Conan, rather than what modern D&D has turned into 😊

Did you know that Sine is two syllables and Sine Nomine is Latin for "No name?" The "-ne" of both words are pronounced the same. Thanks for the video as I've been interested in this for a bit.

This game has a fetus monster. Yeah, it's exactly what it sounds like.

I love Sine Nomine but he needs to realize that the spell names need to be subtitles - not having any idea what a spell does and having to read each one is ao annoying

I play BX and I don't need a "Frey die" or traits to make each character unique. All of this is just gimmicky fluff that you can already do in Basic D&D.
For example, in my current game I have a player using a Dragonborne character. He can tail swipe once per battle and do a breath attack once per day. A lot more thematic than "Frey dice".
Save your money and use your imagination instead. You don't need Scarlet Heroes.
