    I did twelve shows with Phyllis back in 1974, she was by far the nicest, classiest person I've ever worked with. Without the wigs, the padded clothes, and the exaggerated stage makeup, she was actually an attractive woman. She's was also a heck of a classically trained pianist, too.

      She along with Totie Fields were two of THE CLASSIEST COMEDIANS EVER!!! Broke my heart when cancer stole Totie way too soon and Phyllis was also one I'd hoped would live forever ... she opened the stage for women to do stand up... there should be statues erected of her and Totie and Joan Rivers... so sad their class is no longer seen.

When Fang passed around her mashed potatoes, he would ask.. one lump or two? [ when sugar came in cubes it was what the waitress would ask] I even laughed at her husbands name.. 'Fang'. She was a riot.. RIP Phylis.

    It is amazing to see how short the women's skirts and dresses were at this time. Mine were on the short side too but I was still a kid in school. She was a brave woman to wear that dress out on stage. The sparkly necklaces on top of the sparkly dress added extra fun to her look. This took me back to another era, thank you to whoever posted this. 4/6/21

    • @bob2161
      @bob2161 3 роки тому +4

      She intentionally dressed to be gaudy. Her look was part of her schtick. Her appearance in this video is actually a bit tamer than her usual.
      Huge shaggy, spiked hairdos (wigs), multi colored boas, wierd colored dresses with oddly oversized trimmings, and matching boots with spike heels. It was common for her to get laughs for just walking out on stage and modeling her outfit.
      Google her, and click on images. You'll get a good grin or two.

      Dangerfield was cut from the same cloth as Diller, Berle, and those others who largely grew out of the vaudeville/burlesque/Catskills tradition of stand-up. Carlin might have started in a similar vein, but he was of a newer school whose work was far more about longer observational comedy. Woody Allen was one such comic; Lenny Bruce was another. Pryor was another in that vein and it was Carlin who really opened up stand-up from the old constraints and tropes and drove home the idea of connecting the comic to the audience.

    Dressed up like her for a Halloween Party in '82. My friend who was a makeup artist did my makeup so perfect that a lot of people thought I was Phyllis, but I didn't have the laugh yet so they kept asking who I was as I don't look anything like her and couldn't recognize me hrough the makeup. I waited about 3 hours to tell them, had to keep them guessing. They were all in shock. So much fun. Thank you Sheila - the best makeup artist ever.

    In the documentary The Aristrocrats, she was the only comedian they interviewed who refused to tell the joke. She just wouldn't go there. She made jokes ABOUT telling the joke, but she said she didn't do blue material and just politely refused to do it. Whatever else you may think about that choice, I respect that she had a firm set of rules and absolutely did not break them.

    And THAT was considered "spicy" comedy back then!
    I grew up watching her make guest appearances on popular variety shows - back when families had one TV and watched together.
    I loved watching her in movies and the claymation artists who made the holiday specials for children really nailed her look!
    She was a great sport at self-deprecating punch lines and to this day, I've never seen what her husband "Fang" looks like but I had wild visualizations about what his teeth looked like!
    May she RIP!

    She has what I and many others like to call “it”; a true entertainer. Major major star quality. I just love it. Back then you really had to have talent, to make it. You really really did, and even then you had to work 5 times as hard.
