I was a child when this AWESOME show was on. On DECEMBER 24,1963, Idlewild was renamed JFK. My family traveled quite a bit. About 20yrs or more, my sis & I going to our basement found some Jurassic items & 1 of em was a luggage tag with both Pan Am & Idlewild. We asked some people where it was, surprise, lol.
I always loved this comedy program about a fictitious police precinct in New York City. A squad of NYPD Cops, principally Officers Tootie and Muldoon, supported by a small cast of great comedic actor cops. Nipsey Russell and future Grandpa from the Munster's tv comedy that came several years later. I love the "old time" NYPD cars, the uniforms that male and female cops wore in the late 50's. I started in law enforcement in 1971 and female officers wore a different type uniform than what the male officer wore. In the 1950's the female officers wore a blouse and skirt type uniform with plain black leather female shoes, different from the boots that males wore. The .38 Service Revolvers that were carried by cops all over in those times. Usually a Colt Official Police or a Smith & Wesson Model 10. Both gun models in blue steel finish, fixed sights, and a four-inch barrel wearing wood grips. Most of the large city PD's mirrored the equipment and uniforms that NYPD used. Rural agencies tended to use the .357 magnum as opposed to the .38 Special. Car 54 just made my day, the times I got to see it. Seeing the reruns on UA-cam means I can view at my leisure. Getting older ain't no picnic, but viewing those great tv programs of the past makes an old retired cop feel better and reflect on pleasant memories of being a young cop back on the beat again. I appreciate, so much, the posting of the Car 54 series. Nostalgia runs deep with some!
I wasn't even born by the time this was aired but I laughed my guts off at the old timers' "heist"! This definitely puts into perspective for me where Al Lewis and Fred Gwynne got their Munster skills honed in at.
Yes I was looking for this episode awhile back...finally gave up...and it just popped up...and I finally got it again ..gut wrenching funny ..nothing funny like that now
For those who don't know, Fred Gwynne was also a great children's book author and he did the fantastic artwork..."A Little Pigeon Toad"...Great gifts for kids and lotsa laughs for big folk
His parents were upper middle class in NY, and sent him to a very exclusive Fraser-ish prep school that only accepted a very limited number each year!! That prepared him for harvard! During his college career, he was involved in the theater there and they affectionately called their university theater The Pudding!! Since only men went there, fred di both male and female roles in the productions!! He did the book About the chocolate moose!!
I always loved Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis. Great team. I have my kids watching these show as they are so much better. Even my middle son agrees they should bring shows from this and others like Family Affair, I Dream of Jeannie, The Marx brothers, Mister Ed and many more others back on television :)
"Do you mind .... DO! YOU! MIND!" .... If that isn't the single greatest Character Tag Line EVER in Sitcom History then "Oo! Oo!" HAS TO BE! ... Joe Ross was a comic GENIUS!
Joe E. Ross lived in a time when people weren't so thin skinned. It's reflected in the writing. " People were younger then" is so funny. I'm 72 and loved the show as a kid!
My all-time favorite episode of Car 54, Where Are You? Unfortunately, as was typical in this era, some guest stars were left uncredited in the closing titles, but deserve recognition. According to the Internet Movie Database, the other guest actors were: Alan Manson as gang leader William “Baby Face” Gordon; Al Nesor as Harry “The Hawk” Carson (“I got the layout”); Walter Kinsella as the Guard; Judith Lowry as old Trixie LaTouche; and Amelia Darling as young Trixie LaTouche.
One of the funniest shows ever!! I loved the stories and use of New York locations. I was able to borrows DVDs of Car 54 from my library, but have not been able to find any to buy.
I love the munsters! One of the best was when herman was hit by a bolt of lightning in grandpas lab and changed into a normal handsom man!! He really showed his acting chops in that one!! As he always did!
This went off the air when i was only 3 but was lucky enough to watch the reruns when i got older. Ooo Ooo,WAY better than the majority of the crud on nowadays!
I am so exited to see this. big thank you before I even watch! The show was so good. I was laughing through the whole thing. It was funny without having any swearing or sex stuff. I'm sure hoping to find more episodes
I just watched this on Me-TV, and it's a great episode!!! That was funny when the safe was going to blow up and the guy yelled run, and the guy couldn't get of the way! lol And the guy shaking as he's pouring nitroglycerin!!
We got this great show on Channel 4 in the UK. Usually dig out the DVDs at Christmas but just watched this amazing episode. The first sighting of old Trixie reclining on the couch deserved a much bigger laugh!
This was one of the greatest shows at the time it aired . I still love it today i was born in 1956 and i grew up with it . The show was cut way too short should have been on longer .
Love when there in the left lane headed east on newly opened Cross Bronx Expressway at 25:02. Try that today.BTW there is still a Mobil gas station where the old one as seen in the back ground.
I grew up in the Bronx during the 50,s As we watched the show, my dad use to laugh so hard that his eyes would tear. And he were, not the laughing type.

All these years (I was very young when this was on TV), I thought that Gunther was played by Ernest Borgnine. No wonder I couldn't find any old episodes!
Joe E.Ross , was an old burlesque stand-up comedian , he performed in lots of seedy strip joints in New York, he was married 5 times , all were Strippers
I'm 33 years old from India. I can see a lot of compliments on Highway Patrol. Is there anyone in the Bronx who is still alive who watched this on television
Ok. I laughed so hard when the old man tried to run before the vault exploded. I demonstrated the scene to my child and fell on the side of my bottom by accident. I guess we are both too old to do the things we used to do. I am still laughing.
I just flashbacked to being about 6 years old and discovering Nick at Nite. The lineup was this show , Mr Ed, Patty Duke, Dobie Gillis .... I grew up on good old stuff like this guess that’s why I just think the world is so mean and cruel today.
Also spotted "Klinger" (Jamie Farr) from MASH at 11:27. I remember watching this episode as a kid when it first came out. The original TV shows all had great character actors with superb comedic timing. That's because TV was originally centered in New York and inherited actors from vaudeville and radio.
Fred Gwynne guest-starred a couple times on " The Phil Silvers Show" several years earlier. That's probably why Nat Hiken chose him for "Car 54...", since he created both shows. Incidentally, when Toody attempts his fast draw, the TV is showing the opening to "Have Gun, Will Travel".
Great stuff love it. We got to get all the Munsters back on here there is a great kind of a documentary on here about the Munsters. I'll have to watch it again I do not think that they ever even mentioned The Addams Family which seems wrong. Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis all day baby
I still laugh from these episodes, today's comedies are no match.
To u
I was born in the Bronx...Thanks for making me smile, we were happy back then before the riots.....
One of the all-time great sitcoms. This show really should have been on more than 2 seasons.
Why did it stop?
Rick rick Because of Serpico. He showed the NYPD up for being a bunch of racist, corrupt MoFos rather than their being like these cuddly guys.
sdgakatbk, yes it should have been a long running program!
@@rickrick5041 Network executives thought it was too new York
@@rickrick5041 I heard that everyone hated Joe E. Ross and the producer Nat Hiken was sick of it after doing Phil Silvers.

This was great entertainment and excellent writing. Those were the days of real television and great actors and actresses. And pure entertainment.

Still one of the funniest shows I have ever seen.
The ending was especially hilarious with the old fellas dressed up as "Keystone Kops" and riding in that old heap. I love Car 54!
One of the absolutely greatest opening theme songs in the history of situation comedy.
This is classic TV at it prime. Hilarious portrayals and natural one-line comedy at its best. I wasn't even born when these episodes aired.
Watching in St. Louis 2020, enjoy these. Actually we have the two season DVD set at home. So fun to watch.
I wasn't even born by the time this was aired but I laughed my guts off at the old timers' "heist"! This definitely puts into perspective for me where Al Lewis and Fred Gwynne got their Munster skills honed in at.

First time watching this show. Bloody hilarious! 😂 Definitely going to watch more episodes! Wish they had sitcoms like this these days!
Fred Gwynne aka Herman Munster... greatly missed.

Love this show, my daughter and I watch a lot of these great old vintage shows.
Always the best vintage. Been into them 30 years ago. Just got popular. In San Francisco James Gilbreth started the trend.
I agree... Mister Ed... loved it... as well as the others you mentioned.
Too bad these two cops never met Andy and Barney, --- what a crossover that would've been!

I can't decide which was JER's greatest character - Rupert Ritzik or Gunter toody!!
I read where he had trouble remembering his lines so saying "oo! oo" before the line actually helped him.
Joe E. Ross lived in a time when people weren't so thin skinned. It's reflected in the writing. " People were younger then" is so funny. I'm 72 and loved the show as a kid!
i don't know about a genius. but he was funny.

I loved the Chief as well, straight arrow but with a good heart.

He would be dead 10 times before he drew his gun with paladin

Thank you. I have so many memories of this program..
I always liked this show and this episode. And now I see that old Silent Film star Conrad Nagel, and "Raging Bull" Jake LaMotta appeared in it.
Anyone who's ever been tempted to take LaMotta, or that idiotic Scorsese biopic seriously, should see this.
Maaan i miss fred
I used to watch this as a kid. I mostly remembered the theme music and the bumbling big-eyed cop always saying, "eww, eww." LOL
