    It's a testament to the decline of our society that family oriented shows of this nature are no longer produced. We are suffering for it. Molly Picon is iconic here in her portrait of a jewish grandmother Of which NY is bereft in their loss in the social anger that is NYC today. Thank you for bring the memories of a better time back.

      Back then people still had compassion for others. Nowadays almost all of society is just completely out for themselves. And they don't care who they use and abuse to get what they want for themselves.

    Thousands of old grandmothers and decent families were evicted from home, some of whom had lived in for many years.
    Redevelopment and "Urban Renewal" lead to the evisceration of neighborhoods across America.
    I come from Norfolk, Virginia where almost the entire downtown district (and MORE) was bulldozed in the name of progress.
    It is a shameful time in our country.

    I believe the sub text for this episode is the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway. That horrible dysfunctional highway with daily traffic jams destroyed the borough of the Bronx. Slicing the borough in half to encourage people to move to the suburbs. Dispossessing private home owners who balanced the tenant population of the neighborhood. Leveling blocks of homes. Shame on Robert Moses. Many years later grassroots community leaders would stand up to arsonists and scofflaw building owners with the spunk and determination of the charming master baker who is celebrated in this episode. 🌆🗽

      Not sure if this is true, but it makes a good story (in my opinion) if it is. I believe Billy Joel's parents lived in a neighborhood impacted by the Cross Bronx Expressway, and that might be why he was born in the Bronx but raised on Long Island when his parents moved to Hicksville. Did anyone else hear this story? Rock and roll folklore? Just checking.... 🎶🎵🎶

    I remember when this episode first aired and always looked for it during reruns. Of course the theme was city bureaucracy during the time of the building of the controversial Cross Bronx Expressway, and remember that highway when it first was completed in the early 1960s.

    I'm not old enough to have actually remembered 'Car 54'; I was only a tot, about 2 years old when this show was on the air in 1961-62, I may seen it even then. I, however like the sitcom for the actual on-site Bronx scenery in the early 60s. It shows how much the Bronx has changed. This was the South/Northwest Bronx of the early 60s, when it was a predominantly Jewish community, interspersed with Blacks, Italians, Hispanics, Polish, etc. Today these same communities have become crime-infested, gang-dominated neighborhoods. What a change!

    In 1986-1987, in Tucson Az, a somewhat similar incident occurred when the University of Arizona got permission to expand it's campus near Tucson High. The court gave them permission to buy out the small part of the neighborhood which needed to be demolished.. All but one of the people were happy to take the money and relocate, but one 86 year old widow declined. The city decided to wait until she passed rather than go with the bad publicity of forcing her out, which according to the law, they had the right to do (not stating I agree with this). The city made the right call, she ended up dying less than a year later. If she had survived a decade it would been a complete debacle. I believe she thanked the mayor for letting her stay. The major difference being she owned her house and it was in fine order. Back to this show.... Peace and Love and Good TV

    I loved watching "Car 54" when I was a boy - Sunday nights at 8:00 (?) on NBC. Question: It was on for only two seasons, and it seemed very popular after those two seasons. I waited for a third season that never came. Why did it go off the air? Somebody please explain. Thanks!

    • @rightlyso8507
      @rightlyso8507 2 роки тому

      The show had won an Emmy in 1963. Everyone in the cast thought the show would be a shoe-in for a third season. From what I understand, in years of reading about the it, the creator/director/head writer of the show, Nat Hiken, was just about 'burned out' from the stress of doing the show. So he figured it best to end it. Too bad. But still, even today, those sixty episodes are some of the funniest TV ever produced. It's great to know that besides being here on UA-cam, the show is on various TV cable channels, as well as being on DVD. So, it always can be seen and enjoyed!

      I think the studio they filmed at was in the way of the Cross Bronx Expressway, and when Mr Hiken refused to move, NBC just ended the series. So then Molly Picon became Mrs. Hiken and they both lived happily ever after in Brooklyn.
