This was one of my mom's favorite shows when I was a baby . I had heard about Car 54 growing up . 4 or 5 years ago , before she had to go to a memory care home , I ordered a season of this on DVD from Amazon for her . I watched some episodes with her and we had a great time laughing 👍
I had at least three belly laughs on this one. The one about Toody teaching him everything he knows and Captain's comeback insult about kindergarten. The one where Toody says Muldoon is so stupid, he doesn't know how really stupid Toody is (himself) and finally, the Picasso joke about not being able to go bowling.
This show was educational. As a 7 year old, learned “aardvark” and “nonchalant”. Just like Dobie Gillis, when Zelda taught me (and Dobie) “propinquity”!
There's MeTV & Nickat Nite unless those are gone now, but there ARE classic T.V. channels popular on YT & even Old Time 📻 Radio as well. They're not too hard too find now. It's a good thing since today's shows are pretty much garbage & have been since political correctness & Hollywood destroyed comedy & family values & America in general. If you can remember names of shows you should be able to find a channel that posts them.
If you can find it over antenna TV. Bought a new TV, and it cannot even find channels I got with old TV. Moving antenna just a half inch up down, any direction, rotate even a little, and loses reception.
There are so many superb one-liners from Toody in the this. When Joe pulls a face he makes me laugh. The bonus of former Bilko actors too - the leiutenant - ex -Captain Barker, Private Mullen, and the brilliant Beatrice Pons as the nagging wife (no change there then!). Thanks for putting this on, I must get both series on dvd of this.
Now that's comedy ,,, there's a hold up in the bronx , Brooklyns broken up in fights, there's a traffic jam in Harlem that's backed up to jackson heights,, there's a scout troops lost a child ,, etc etc ,,, LOVE IT !!!!!!
This episode brings back more memories than one. Early in this episode, when Toody is telling Muldoon about the most "nonchalant" baseball players, in the background you can see the back of a Ballentine beer truck. It reminded me of watching baseball games with my Dad and listening to the phrase "Baseball and Ballentine Beer" spoken by Yankees baseball announcer Mel Allen. Great little memory. 🙂
The recurring role of "Katz the Butcher" is played by series creator Nat Hiken's cousin Gerald Hiken. He appeared in many television shows over a span of more than 30 years, from The Phil Silvers Show (also by Nat Hiken) in the 50's to Cheers in the 80's.
"What was it that Cicero said" Toody.. "Yeah what was it?" This totally cracked me up. "Why don't we sing something we all know... Tchaikovsky 6th" *"Is Picasso going bowling tonight"* I got some more bad news for you... Picasso can't make it either.
I love all the classical music and fine art references - totally accurate! The closest we come to that are some Frasier episodes, but, ironically, these are COPS!
Lol Aardvarks. I had this on my TVon the channel ME TV before I fell asleep, and I heard half of this show jokes. Lol I started to crank up laughing when I heard the character brushing up on his knowledge starting in aardvark. Lol I think I should start watching this show.
Driving right by holdups, accidents, etc. because of "driving while talking arts and culture." Hoo boy. After watching several episodes, I wondered, How in the world did Toody and Muldoon manage to stay on the force? Whatever, every episode is so darned funny!
It's remarkable how things have changed as far as television and the attention to details. In the first car scene with the rookie in the back, Gwynne never moves that steering wheel one tiny bit for the first couple of minutes lol.
Good One... Herman Munster was a Cop .before He got ugly! I was reading Charlotte Raye played Sgt Schnatters Wife, I'm looking out on the EPs for Her when She was young.
Nikita Khrushchev, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Tony Kubek, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Bobby Richardson, Francois-Marie Arouet a.k.a. Voltaire, Michel Montaigne, Francis Bacon, William Shakespeare, Cicero, Frank Loyd Wright, Leonard Bernstein, Vaughn Monroe, Spike Jones, Muggsy Spanier, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Thomas Henry Huxley, Pablo Picasso, Bela Bartok, Charles Darwin, Gregory Bateson, Samuel Butler, Matisse, Jackson Pollack, Henri Matisse, Procopious, Dmitry Shostakovich, all in one episode!
Good old Police Academy, say is Lt. Foster still teaching there? oh yes, still there i guess he never had the nerve to do it the nerve to do what? he said if i graduated he'd Kill himself LOL
That's why I NEVER bother wih remakes. Another example involving 2 actors from this show: The Munsters. The remakes they tried making were HORRIBLE. The Addams Family got away with 1 decent movie remake - but they should have left it there in my humble opinion. Every one since then has gotten more horrible especially the animated ones. Just awful!
Are you REALLY that much of a whiney SJW that you're going to go back DECADES in time to inject your racism & white guilting into THIS great show? Do you have ANY idea about demographics compared to population in the city or country then or now or where or how things were patrolled? Know ANYTHING about how Harlem or Chinatown or a Latin area or Little Italy or a Polish area etc etc etc was its own part of town, as was each part of ANY major city each having areas carved out by different kinds of people who made those sections their own BY CHOICE? AND IT WORKED OUT THAT WAY BECAUSE NO ONE LIKE YOU STUCK THEIR NOSES INTO EACH OTHERS BUSINESS? Take your stupid virtue signaling ELSEWHERE. You're a divider.
why doe's the picture quality keep getting worse with each episode? if you are going to put something on PUT THE DAMN THING ON ,don't keep fucking with it,,
Maybe he just wasn't worried about having to support a wife & children yet. Not EVERYONE automatically assumes single men or women are gay or children playing with both kinds of toys are TRANS as people who are hypersexualised today do. Besides, gays ARE portrayed pretty clearly in classic movies & shows. It's pretty obvious.
Lol Aardvarks. I had this on my TVon the channel ME TV before I fell asleep, and I heard half of this show jokes. Lol I started to crank up laughing when I heard the character brushing up on his knowledge starting in aardvark. Lol I think I should start watching this show.
One of the greatest sitcoms from television’s greatest era.
This was a great show, never should've been given up like that. 60 funny episodes.
@@manfrommeeteetse3880 Interesting if the show ran even one more season than Fred Gwynne and al Lewis wouldn’t have been available for the Munsters
@walterschivo9123 I completely agree
Don’t watch this at 4 in the morning. You’ll never fall asleep😂

Car 54 is my fav tv show of all time. I use to watch re-runs during summer vacation when I was like 15.
Thats a lovely memory. Memories of sharing shows and films and laughing with your folks are the best! I wish you and your mom long life. 🤗

This was a great classic show. With a great cast.
This was a great show excellent writer's and good comedy. Today shows are inferior. Car 54 was and still is the best comedy's that was created.
sgt bilko is fantastic ...

I'd forgotten just how funny this programme was and still is, when he said Picasso can't go bowling I almost cried with laughter!
This IS one of the GREATEST shows of ALL TIME. Hilarious, early 1960's NY. Love it!!!!
This show was educational. As a 7 year old, learned “aardvark” and “nonchalant”. Just like Dobie Gillis, when Zelda taught me (and Dobie) “propinquity”!
I learned faux pas from a 60's TV show. lol
As someone who was born in 1955, I love the old tv shows, I wish there was tv station that would show shows from the fifties and sixties.

Love this episode! ❤ 😂
Car 54, the ultimate bedtime show.
Exactly. Am I the only one who thinks the best part of this is the improvisation in the beginning in the police car?
Excellent episode !

Herman Munster and Grandpa on the same show pre-Munsters...

Just plain funny without overdoing the acting
You know, come to think of it, I do remember Mickey Mantel was pretty nonchalant.

I think it was as chalant as the other episodes, if not chalanter.
the actor driving looks like the monsters herman
That is because it is, Fred Gwynne, also the judge from My cousin Vinny

Fred Gwynne was in a Bilko episode 'The Eating Contest''
