Loyalty is something that most people strive to be. It is a good trait to have as it benefits the people you care for.
If someone needs your help, your loyalty is what gets them out of certain predicaments.
But sometimes being loyal can be a problem for yourself. To be loyal to those that are no longer loyal to you or even to those that are closest to you can mean that you can be used and manipulated to do things you never wanted to do.
To be peer pressured because you feel that if you are not loyal, then you are a bad friend or family member.
There is a fine line between someone being loyal and then going too far to the point of being harmful.
And that is what 1988’s As Tears Go By means to me.
Directed by Wang Kar Wai, the film follows Wah, a wannabe gangster living in Hong Kong. Him and his younger brothers Sky and Site go around trying to either maintain the respect they have as a gang or grow it by showing their bravery.
But this lifestyle that Wah has inhabited at a young age becomes a burden as he begins to fall in love with a girl called Ngor. She stays with Wah for a few days and during this period they become close.
And eventually fall in love.

Shout out to Prince Charles Cinema who was the inspiration to do videos on Wong Kar Wai movies
but just a little clarification here, Fly and his younger brother are brothers by blood, like real brothers. So you could say that Fly is doing that suicide task for his family, kinda heroic but dumb. Wah really should move on and leave Fly to his stupidness, even Fly told him to leave him alone. Fly was literally asking Wah to dump him cuz he knew he is no good for Wah. Everything is kind of foreshadowed but the ending just seems inevitable. I guess that's what they call a tragedy. Great movie.
"Take my breath away."... Hong Kong version is what makes this movie- that and the " magic cue"

This movie is the Mean Streets that occurred in Hong Kong. You could tell that Fly is just like that Johnny-boy played by Robert DeNiro and Wah is Charlie.

@@imsmokey4331 - Simple. All three stories are about two friends who are thugs. One wants out, the other is dedicated to the streets and acting "hard" and stupid. The one who wants to go straight does so out of love for a chick and has had it with the street life, even though it keeps calling them back.
@@mr.odessa6836 yeah but caine was the reckless one in that story. He did a lot of dumb shit (getting a girl preg and beating up her cousin, he was also robbing some niggas too) that ultimately got him killed. O dog was crazy but m2s is about how caine spiralled down from a good innocent kid to a known street thug. With mean streets and atgb, both the main characters wah and charlie are protectors and big brothers to the reckless younger character fly and johnny boy. Thats not the same character dynamic between odog and caine. Also caine didnt hate the street life he didnt even want to leave until his big bro that was locked up told him to leave and he really liked that girl. That can also be said for charlie but that’s something else. Love all three movies tho

I'd like to add a few missing pieces. Watching this movie just exclaims Asian family culture at its peak.
In most Asian cultures, ties and loyalty to the family is regarded with high utmost importance over one’s personal beliefs and pleasures. Here, Wah's family is clearly Fly and his younger brother, and society is the ‘gang’ and surroundings that he’s in.
Ordinarily, typical in Asian families, decisions are made in unison when it regards to something important such as future direction and the family, and oftentimes, the big brother is depicted as the pillar or tower of younger siblings when it comes to life as they bear the responsibilities of it. The opening scene depicts it as Wah wakes up taking calls and caters to his own circle.
In the movie it’s depicted that Wah is not a responsible with his life decisions, like how he cannot make a solid choice to marry his lover, and how he cannot control Fly’s brash behavior, and how he even cannot attend to his cousin when she comes to stay with him. Simple to say, he’s not a good big brother. He’s in a situation where life gives him this responsibility that he doesn’t want. It’s evidenced by how initially indifferent he is to Fly in the phone calls, and to his cousin living in his apartment.
Over the course of the movie, his character develops into someone who takes the responsibilities more seriously although ultimately detrimental to himself. He succumbs to the pressure at some point in the movie to change to stand up for his family to make things better. In doing so, he rejects all what life could have offered him (like his love for his cousin, and the peace that brings him outside Kowloon). This act is not just about loyalty but responsibility and the ways he could improve his family above himself.
At the end of the movie, it shows that Wah is hesitant to support Fly in his goals, but his responsibility as an older brother took over despite the wrong decision fly has committed, and this is normal for most Asian cultures at that time until today.
Additional Details:
It’s unusual for Asian men to be with their cousin. It’s incest to be honest, but the strong ties to family suggest that familial bond proceeds above all else. This is evidenced when Ah-Kong (his cousin) left the doctor to be with Wah. It’s odd if you look at it in a family context but if you place it with the themes of the movie, it’s correct in some way. However, as you can see with Wah’s character this attachment to his cousin is more of a personal pleasure rather than a familial responsibility, and still his ties and responsibilities to his family (Fly ) is above this.
It can also be seen with several scenes of the movie that blueish tone shows his inner personal side as dark, muted, for me gives rise to a cold feeling which he does not venture into. In scenes with warm and neutral white balance, there is a glimmer of hope, warmth and peace that Wah experiences. One of my favorite scenes was when we have about to leave Fly, walking out the door that is blue-lit, but returns after a few minutes to the warm tone and lighting of Fly. It’s symbolic that he chose family above his dark, cold personal interest and would want to pursue the responsibilities of a Big Brother in his family.
Overall, this movie is all about family ties and how family dynamics in the culture work. Family decisions are above one’s own preference, and one’s preference might not be the best one to pursue. Also, this movie is like on steroids, as it overly unbalances the weight of familial bond versus personal wants. It’s just exaggerated so that maybe the viewers can see the conflict. Anyway, those are my two cents

Just got into Kar-Wai Wong movies and finished this and Fallen Angels. As Tears Go By has been my favorite so for. Can you recommend any similar movies from the late 80s early 90s? Great breakdown by the way this movie really hit my heart haha.

This movie and a momment of romance nerfed Andy lau lol I know different genre movies but similar years the Andy Lau from magic crystal, lucky stars would’ve easily kicked all the gangs and bad guys in as tears go by and a momment of romance with ease but seeing Andy get beaten up in both movies is depressing as I’m used to seeing him in martial arts movies where he’s choreographed taking on multiple men on his own and winning but in movie like this and his momment of romance he’s easily beaten up and shows no skills but again different movies different genre
