The first of the romance saga Wong Kar Wai crafted and in a way, low key establishes the longing and desire of a character's love, inherent in their actions and thoughts that would be further explored and expanded on, in the next films. Dying for a friend/brother, never truly able to fulfill the love, lingering beyond Wah's last moments.
First time watching this scene I was like: "No..don't get involved. It's over for him. He got nothing to lose. You still got-" Before I finish my thought, my heart was shattered into million pieces. And the "life flashes before his eyes" the moment he kisses her. It's heartbroken. He got a chance to start a new life with the love of his life, and pay the price for it. I respect the brother-to-brother relationship between them, but man... the only one who keeps dragging him back to his street life when he's trying to move on, it's his brother and I felt sorry for him.
AS TEARS GO BY is one of the best Hong Kong movies, I have ever seen 😺👍. I bought it on DVD from a flea market this year's winter. Greetings from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
That was hardly a decision made for money. C'mon. This movie was perfect with the way Andy died at the end. It would have been way too happy if he had just gone to live with Maggie and there would be nothing to think about at the end of the movie. Movies that make you think after- those are my favorites!! In this scene, it's clear that the one thought that ran through Andy's mind as he was dying was his brief moments in the phone booth with Maggie. Showing his REAL true intentions. Helping his little brother Fly was just what he had learned and trained to do his whole life as a gangster, but I think at the end, he regretted that decision- whether he has the time to realize it or not. Such a beautiful and sad ending.
@@mattchibi don't worry... this is Andy Lau's style, most of his movies he dies in the end... Like his most recent one shockwave I believe and world without thieves. Only the new year ones he doesn't like the mahjong one with lau ching wan.
did he really die?, i mean if i were to give it an ending since i think it has an open ending , he would still survive but hell, he was shot on his head
@@TheNobleChipmunk my bad bro i apologize for my ignorance... would u pls give me some context of that movie.. why they wanted to killed that guy so bad
This ending scene is heartbreakingly perfect.
Without a doubt! The song makes it more heartbreaking.
I think Taiwan version is better than this Hong Kong version.

There is an alternate ending ua-cam.com/video/ieJEVx4BA9M/v-deo.html
In the alternative ending he survived but ended up a vegetable
2 ending this one he dies the other one he lives in jail as a dumb brute
Vegetable ending is much more sad I say.

His name is ANDY LAU; you do not address the legend as some fella.
