Understanding Chungking Express (1994) | What Does Love Mean to You?

  • Chungking Express is Wong Kar Wai’s third feature film.
Following the characters of Ho Chi Moo, Cop 663, and Faye. These three have one connecting theme and that is love.
Both Ho Chi Moo and Cop 663 are heartbroken by recently being dumped by their girlfriends, whilst Faye falls in love but doesn’t know how to deal with that kind of emotion.
It’s a film that deconstructs the cycle of love. From starting with the grief of losing someone you once thought will stay by your side forever to the magical moment of finding another person to love again.
It is a story about the complications of one simple emotion.
An emotion that affects every single one of us. And an emotion that can get very confusing to understand.
And that concept is shown through our three characters that all have ways in coping with the loss of love to falling in love again.
Which makes this film such an interesting watch as we delve in the power that love can hold on people.
Everyone has a different experience on what love does to them.
And through the story telling of Wong Kar Wai, it is shown to be a whimsical yet frustrating emotion to have.
Through the characters of Ho Chi Moo and Cop 663, they both get dumped by the people that they thought loved them back.
But what’s interesting about the two stories is how they are told. And through that Wong Kar Wai shows us a different perspective of what a heartbreak can look like.

I just watched this movie and I feel it changed my life. How can a movie about a man who talks to his soap and a woman who breaks into his house be so compelling and nostalgic and beautiful.

i just finished this great film and what i particularly loved about it was the vibe it set out. the era this movie captured during the time can never be replicated and what a time to fall in love or being involved in love. i sometimes wished i lived through that time.

Just watched this movie at cinema again for its 30th anniversary screening . I am from HK and watched it when it first came out and so much memory has come back . I also lived near that escalator at that time. How I wish I could go back to that Hong Kong at that time . ❤

3:30 I don't really doubt his relationship (Although probably his partner did stop loving him at the end of it). In the movie he doesn't say that is the first time ever that a woman texts him happy birthday, it just says "On this day, a women wished me a happy birthday". Which, after being heart broken, having moments like that are the moments that give you hope again, especially in an importand date as 1st may was for him, those are the moments that stay with you, and I think that's one of the themes of the movie too, finding hope, even if he didn't find love he found hope.
We struggle, and in those times of struggle we have some routines, and sometimes you just gonna keep repeating those routines until you are out of that bad time, until you find hope again.

I know the “Stalking For Love” trope has recently received a lot of criticism from critics and video essayists such as The Pop Culture Detective. But I still love this movie.
tfw no tomboy stalker to help me clean my house while I am busy and depressed.

I think it's symbolic of the distance between them that they can't close until the end of the movie. She's clearly interested in him, but he can't move on, and she can't take the leap to tell him how she feels. She's literally inhabiting the same space as him, but as soon as he comes back and catches her, she gets scared and runs away.

I rewatched this movie with my ex BF some weeks before we broke up and he cried a lot because he kinda knew what was going to happen. It was a 5 year relationship, but we came to a moment where we didn't agree anymote with the relationship's format.
It was a "consensual" break up, but I still love him so so much, and even if I'm in love with someone else now I wonder if one day we can fall in love again at the right time.

    • @florianlaur5300
      @florianlaur5300 27 днів тому

But if you still love him, shouldn't you maybe still be together? It's exhausting sometimes and people hate to fight. But sometimes, it may take thousands of hours of fight for us to finally solve a problem because we just never have the right approach.

It's really interesting what you pointed out about how Wong Kar Wai chose to show flashbacks of one relationship, but not the other! I never really thought about this. I really agree that it plays a bit part in making He Qiwu look a lot more delusional and pathetic than 663, because it sometimes feels like the relationship was mostly in his head. But strangely enough, regarding the "bad person" in the relationship, I'd say I disliked the air hostess a lot more than May. May, to me, just seems to have broken up and moved on. The air hostess is shown as rather callous in her attitude. Both May and the air hostess seem to have broken up a little on a whim (but it is told by the men in both cases), but while May sticks to it, the air hostess appears as rather callous and even a little cruel. Her letter almost seems to mock him, and then she is not consistent, as she leaves a message on his phone to try and start again... but is later seen with another guy. Plus her rather mean remark that he looks better in uniform... Really, overall, I dislike her far more than the invisible May.

Story One - very well explained, as I a never knew how to really summarize it. Not unlike 2046, Story One got morphed for the good or bad during editing or production. Story Two got morphed as well but I think the chemistry was so strong it pulled the story all together - and the longer film time that chemistry lead to them using. 2046 the Faye Wong story I have a hunch it was larger originally and the Zhang Ziyi was smaller, but the chemistry was working so well with Zhang Ziyi .. I think "with the camera" they could not stop putting time toward it .. but viewers know in 2046 the heart that you take away from it is Faye Wongs sadness and victory over 2046; with the tragedy being the somewhat haunting, "what if" moments.

For me love is an enigma, all my life I experience love through happiness and sadness in terms of the feeling of the people surround me, but I don't think I experience love through me. Maybe unbeknown to me I experience love by myself but I fail to acknowledge such thing as love. People known me to be loving but I'm just kind to reciprocate those feeling people wanted me to give, people knew don't ask as it was given knowledge my kindness equates love but for me those thing feels different entity, different aspect that I feel new and ambiguous. I never felt undoubtedly and sure when someone feelings, i never felt biased based on aspect of my belief if ain't justify, I never feel i wanted a stranger to make me a person i never was. I'm sheltered with kindness and disdain both mingle and shape me who I am today, but I never know what and how to love, it feels like chore, a mediated thing in course of action of my life, it feels empty as love for me is an enigmatic entity.

I am fascinated by how movies about love are typically a toxic blend of passion, betrayal, disappointment, heartbreak, and the uneasy feeling that it may all be pointless. It is trully a reflection of Existentialism, specifically its key principles of Absurdity, Alienation and Anxiety. Existentialism which professes a Godless cold universe where humans find their own meaning and way to happiness and develop their own set of principles to live by. You make your own rules as you go, sounds like the dogma of a cruel narcissist. Is it any wonder that artists and philosophers who live by those principles have absolutely horrible experiences with long lasting love? Not shocking that few love interests seek to stay with them or that their movies and books often reflect relationships as toxic.
