  • Papirosen ("Cigarettes") -- traditional Yiddish song
Actually, "Papirosen" was originally not a song, but a dance: a vigorous and joyful dance, not unlike "Mazl Tov". Then, after World War I, Russian songwriter Herman Yablokoff wrote a poem, and put it to the music of the popular dance, slowing it down considerably. The poem is extremely sentimental: it tells of a young boy who is crouching under a wall, drenched in rain, begging passersby to buy cigarettes from him. His father, he tells them, was lost in a battle, his mother died from grief, his sister also died; he himself is homeless, and hungry. On and on it goes, woe after woe; and so -- "buy my cigarettes"...
    Below are the lyrics:
A kalte nakht a nepldike finster umetum,
shteyt a yingele fartroyert un kukt zikh arum.
Fun regn shitst im nor a vant,
a koshikl halt er in hant,
un zayne oygn betn yedn shtum.
Ikh hob shoyn nit keyn koyekh mer
    arumtsugeyn in gaz, hungerig un
    opgerizn fun dem regn naz.
Ikh shlep arum zikh fun baginen,
    keyner git nisht tsu fardinen,
ale lakhn, makhn fun mir shpaz.
Kupitye koyft she, koyft she papirosn,
    trukene fun regn nisht fargozn.
    Koyft she bilik benemones,
koyft un hot oyf mir rakhmones,
    ratevet fun hunger mikh atsind..
    Kupitye koyft she shvebelakh antikn,
dermit verd ir a yosiml derkvikn.
Umzizt mayn shrayen un mayn loyfn,
keyner vil bay mir nit koyfn,
oysgeyn vel ikh muzn vi a hunt.
Ikh hob gehat a shvesterl, a kind fun der natur,
mit mir tsusamen zikh geshlept hot zi a gants yor.
Mit ir geven iz mir fil gringer, laykhter vern flegt
der hunger, ven ikh fleg a kuk ton nor oyf ir.
Mit amol gevorn iz zi shvakh un zeyer krank,
oyf mayne hent iz zi geshtorbn oyf a gazn-bank.
Un az ikh hob zi farloyrn, hob ikh alts ongevoyrn,
zol der toyt shoyn kumen oykh tsu mir.
    TRANSLATION
A cold night, a misty darkness swirls about
A boy stands and sadly looks around
Only a wall protects him from the rain
He holds a little tray in his hand
And his eye prays silently to each one that passes.
Already I have no more strength to move around the
    street
Hungry and bedraggled from the soaking rain
I drag myself around from the day`s beginning
    Nobody wants my service
They all laugh and make fun of me
    Ref:-
    Pile up and buy,
Do you want to buy cigarettes?
Dry, those that the rain forgot to wet
    Buy them cheap, believe me,
Buy and have pity on me
    Save me from starvation
    Pile up and buy
    The best matches
And luck will be always with you
Forgive my futile shouting and my rambling on
Nobody will buy anything from me
In the end I`ll finish up like a dog.
    I had a little sister
    A child of nature
    We were always together
And we travelled around for a whole year
She made me feel on top of the world,
Her laughter would fly away the hunger
    And when we were happy
My only thoughts were for her.
Then there came a time when she became weak
    And very ill.
She died in my arms on a street bench
And since I lost her, I have lost everthing
May death come already soon to me.
    Refrain Repeat

I first heard this song as a kid; my dad translated.for me. It was hard to listen to then; the photographs shown here remind me of how bad it was for orphan children. It's awful to see their misery. This rendition is heart breaking.

I grew up with this song. It has been a standard in the Yiddish song repertoire for many many decades, both as the poignant vocal expressing so much about our times; and as an instrumental dance tune. Many great artists have covered it in many recordings spanning nearly 100 years.
For a wonderful rendition as close to the way I know this tune; listen to the Master Klez Dave Taras, doing his version on the CD "TANZ!" Taras plays with heart and feeling as no other clarinet klez....and you can dance to this one, as you remember all the misery of the various shoah of each decade in our times; and pray that
the world changes, so that little kids never have to be thrown into a life of ignominy
and wretched misery inflicted by the insanity of the self destructive bloody madness of the so-called adults. Having said all that, I apologize; and send wishes of bountious mazel to everyone, and that the Grace of the Beloved Ancient One sends blessings of inner joy to all.

They sing this the way I imagined it should be sung- tragically. I've been learning this on my violin for years and am still struggling with getting the poignancy into it. Thank you, Yankele and Nachman for putting your heart and soul here! I really appreciated the English subtitles. I have been trying for at least 4 years to get someone to translate it verbatim so I can play with feeling.

Beautiful song in Yiddish. 'Papirosen' comes from the Polish word 'papierosy' and means 'cigarettes'. Yiddish is based on German, but it would be interesting to know how much Polish influenced Yiddish. At the end of the day, Yiddish-speakers in Poland lived among mostly Polish speaking people.

    • @ibnyahud
      @ibnyahud 4 роки тому

since all Ashkenazim throughout Europe spoke Yiddish in the pre-war era, there are considered to be 4 main "dialects" of Yiddish, basically German, Polish, Hungarian/Romanian, and Litvak (Russian Ukrainian Baltic languages ect)...they all pronounce the vowels slightly differently and have different admixtures of the neighboring lingua francas of the regions...It can actually be difficult at times for Litvak and Hungarisher Yiddish speakers to understand each other. German Yiddish was actively reformed to be closer to regular German in accordance with the new lax and "assimilated" Reform movement in the 19th century that took place there. Hungarisher Yiddish is probably the most uniquely Jewish, and Litvak Yiddish is often disliked by other Yiddish speakers because it sounds like illiterate Russians trying to speak to them. I feel it's the least German in syntax and there is greater usage of Slavic language and Hebrew words.

This was written at least 20 years before Warsaw Ghetto by Herman Yablokoff, probably in Grodno where he saw homeless children, a result on civil war (World War I). He popularized in the US in the 1930s.

Speaking as a professional musician, I think this rendition is excellent. The video is also excellent. A small suggestion I have is to try to do something so that the words are not sometimes washed out by the shiny piano pedals behind them. Perhaps something could be placed over the pedals for future videos so that this does not happen. I believe there are cloth covers for instance available for piano pedals. They come in dark colors. Using them would probably remove the problem of words being washed out.

This cover of Papirrossen is excellent. The song was not written about the Ghettos of WWII. Rather it was inspired by Yabbie's experience during WWI. He wrote the song in the early 1930's. Yabbie's Nephew, my Uncle Avraham Yablonik z"l, did sell cigarettes in the Grodno Ghetto to help make some money or to barter for food during WWII. Avraham was murdered by the Germans in the Birkenau Death Camp in December 1942.

Doskonale rozumiem dramatyzm tej pieśni. Mój ojciec , który był Polakiem, też sprzedawał podczas okupacji niemieckiej papierosy. Pewnego dnia jakiś żołdak niemiecki kopnął go i rozdeptał papierosy. Mój ojciec miał wtedy ok. 12 lat i ten przypadek sprawił, że wstąpił do podziemnej organizacji (partyzantki) i walczył w Powstaniu Warszawskim w 1944 roku. A wcześniej nosił do getta warszawskiego potrzebne produkty.

The "pathos" that some have mentioned in the words is no pathos; the suffering of Jews in Ghettos controlled by Germans far surpassed & exceeded the horrendous life experienced by the boy in this song. For eternal damnation!
