ALIAS WIZARD, I agree that Melle Mel was definitely ahead of his time. I wouldn't even argue with him being the greatest, just for the simple fact of how big is influence is to Hip-Hop!
I’m tired of people not giving New Edition credit for merging Hip Hop and R&B. Granted, they weren’t “rappers” but they were the first to rap and sing in the same song. Look at their early videos...they were pop locking and everything. They were hip hop dudes who did R&B
Shyyyd yes they were rappers and singers they rapping song they whole career and they was better than some rappers that call they self rappers but I agree those cats never get their credit and I've been saying it from the beginning and they also married basketball and hip Hop people never give them credit for that either and they trained and they change the dress code for musicians everybody was dressing up in suits and costumes but New edition came out wearing everyday gear and it was the first singing or rap group along with the furious five to be in the neighborhoods they took you to the hood but they never get credit

Kool Moe Dee mentions the battle at the Latin Quarters in his book "There's A God On the Mic". According to Kool Moe Dee, Mel was arguing with Biz Markie about there was no MC who could battle him and Biz was saying Big Daddy Kane could take him. Out of respect for Mel, Kane didn't. All of a sudden KRS appeared out of no where calling Mel out. Kool Moe Dee says KRS won the crowd when he said "You know what you need to learn?.... Old school artist don't always burn...You're just another rapper who had his turn... Now it's MY TURN". Battle over... according to Kool Moe Dee.
Actually I think this is incorrect. I know Chaka Khan and Melle Mel say this but New Edition's first album came out in '83 and they were rapping on some songs along with the singing. Maybe this was the first union between an R&B star and a rapper on a song but it's not the first time someone rapped on an R&B song. I remember New Edition being the first time I heard a group rapping on an R&B song.
Blondie's "Rapture" was the 1st 1981, but New Edition's "Candy Girl" in 83' changed the game until this day. Chaka song was on the soundtrack for the movie "Breakin" 84'
@@rustyjames5000 I wouldn't call Blondie R&B nor what she was doing there real rapping but your point is well taken. Rapture felt more like a late disco song but music is fluid so putting it in specific boxes is tough.
@@Israel-nb7ip you have to realize at the time mainstream wasn't tring to let rap get in the door. I don't think she's from America. She needed a new sound and chose hip hop. @@rustyjames5000 no doubt it slaps. A lot of disco songs slapped. But I just wouldn't categorize that as R&B in the vein Chaka Khan, Melle Mel and we're talking about. 🙋🏾♀️ hello, I would like to speak on KRS' behalf. I call bullshit Melle Mel!!! I was a teenager hanging out at the Latin Quarters that night. KRS One was killing the stage. He was so good. I guess he found out that Mel was in the club at some point. Not sure about that part, but I do remember while on stage, KRS said "where the f*ck is Melle Mel?" He called him out I think maybe twice or several times during his set. He called him out, then continued rapping. Out of nowhere, Melle Mel jumped on stage. The audience went nuts. We were all thinking, oh sh*t, it's about to go down! Melle Mel was passed a mic, but everytime he was going to start rapping, Scott la Rock (R.I.P) would start cutting and scratching, preventing Melle Mel from beginning. The audience loved it, but it was starting to really frustrate Melle Mel. He angrily said "Mr. DJ play the f*cking record." 🤭 So finally Scott la Rock let's the record play without interruption. Melle Mel sounded so old school like 1970s style. I think he even threw in one of those ah - huh - huh - huh, that he used to do. The crowd started laughing and dissing. For some reason I can't remember if he was booed, but he got absolutely no love. KRS One took over and ripped the mic, we all go crazy. Melle Mel got so mad, he left the stage. It was a battle in my eyes that he lost.

I remember Melle Mel jumping on the stage and standing there for a minute to let the crowd take in his presence. It was great until he start rapping. KRS One says he crashed the set, but I do remember him calling Melle Mel out then Mel crashed the set. It's weird that Melle Mel is almost making it seem like KRS One made this all up.
I love KRS One, but I never liked this line. Why? Because eventually, he'll be considered "old school," and people will write him off as a "has been." KRS got a little taste of that karma with his feud with Nelly. Of course, Nelly, on his best day, could not beat KRS in a battle, but at the time of the beef, Nelly was popular and KRS One was considered that "old school artist who had his turn." The moral of the story is to not diss the pioneers who paved the way for you to be here -- because it could eventually come back on you.
KRS is one of the best emcees ever but he also is a master of exaggeration, even as far back as ‘South Bronx’ he’s been manipulating situations to boost he’s career. Because he has such a commanding voice I use to lap all his stories up but now I know anything he says needs to be fact checked.
Thank you. I was just coming to write something like this. Ever since I saw a video fact checking the veracity of the historical claims Kris has made I've wondered about him.

In my honest opinion I think this is the greatest rapper of all time his word play was ridiculous and he was on a conscious level way ahead of his time
I whole heartedly agree
I didn’t hear Melly Mel because he’s a bit before my time. Kool Keith and DOOM are my favorite emcees of all-time. Once I got into them in the early 2000s I went back to listen to their Ultra and KMD catalogues. Ppl still haven’t caught up to what Ultra was doing !
@Mr Color that's your opinion everybody feels different don't get me wrong rakim and Kool g rap are nice but they probably will tell you Melle Mel is the best I've heard rakim talk about him before
Rino and Cannabis is my favorite MCs.. Lyrical as f__..! I love a lot of trap rap *"I sometimes like my rap ratchet at times my guilty pleasure"* but if I just want some word play and metaphors then I reach for Rino,Cannabis, Nas and Ludacris..
ALIAS WIZARD, I agree that Melle Mel was definitely ahead of his time. I wouldn't even argue with him being the greatest, just for the simple fact of how big is influence is to Hip-Hop!
Helleva song written by Prince!
I’m tired of people not giving New Edition credit for merging Hip Hop and R&B. Granted, they weren’t “rappers” but they were the first to rap and sing in the same song. Look at their early videos...they were pop locking and everything. They were hip hop dudes who did R&B
They also rapped on their first album pre cool it now.
Dude bet just did a movie about new edition where was you? Plus bet honored the legendary group for 25 years in music industry hello?
@@seanfelder3286 they celebrate them for their singing careers but you never hear them get credit or their contributions to hip hop which they were both r&B and hip-hop. Like one thing to never get talked about before rappers could get liability contracts for venus new addition allowed the early rappers to piggyback off their insurance policies and do shows so the rappers woud open up for New edition and in return Russell Simmons put them in krush groove to pay homage to them...

lol either or, KRS would have literally destroyed Melle Mel regardless
🤔 never knew a Prince track was the 1st Rap/R&B mashup with MM & Chaka on it. On a level, that makes perfect sense
Hip Hop and punk rock had a merger back then. NY clubs ran the music business with disco. All the clubs changed to punk rock and hip hop. Blondie wanted the streets. Not true R&B, but it slaps. 🤣
@@rustyjames5000 no doubt it slaps. A lot of disco songs slapped. But I just wouldn't categorize that as R&B in the vein Chaka Khan, Melle Mel and we're talking about. And, yeah, Blondie was a British group I believe and were definitely more disco with a punk aesthetic than anything else. If anything, the video was more hip hop than the actual song.

I love KRS One, but I never liked this line. Why? Because eventually, he'll be considered "old school," and people will write him off as a "has been."
KRS got a little taste of that karma with his feud with Nelly. Of course, Nelly, on his best day, could not beat KRS in a battle, but at the time of the beef, Nelly was popular and KRS One was considered that "old school artist who had his turn."
