My father, Dick Holler, wrote this song in 1968 after the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and He loved this version of his song. Something to keep in mind, Moms knew Martin and Bobby, as she was very involved in the civil rights movement of the 60's. I'm sure it added greatly to the emotion she put into her moving performance.

Your father wrote a beautiful tibute to theses four great men. I believe it will live forever and carry with it a part of the story of the struggle for civil rights in America.

I cannot believe what I've just heard & watched..This was played in my home when I was very young & it made me feel emotional but THIS has just ripped my heart out and made me cry. That amazing woman sang with her heart..she has lived with the history and the pain of losing these greatest men of our time. The memories this beautiful woman has could have been told through a book. These precious, precious human beings should be celebrated and acknowledged..Sending peace ☮️ and love ❤️ from the UK 🇬🇧

Except for Abraham Lincoln, she did know John Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy personally. That emotion was real.

She sang with such passion because with the exception of Abraham Lincoln she knew these people that she was singing about, they were her friends and she did miss them so.

Everybody loved Moms Mabley, even though her act was quite brazen and racy. Raunchy even.
She blew us away with this because we got a glimpse into the pain behind the laughter.

Born in 1894, she became famous on the Chitlin Circuit in 1920. She came out as a lesbian in 1921! Thanks to appearances on Ed Sullivan and The Smothers Brothers, she had an amazing comeback. Her rendition of Dick Holler's song is the most touching, I think. When she says, " My little Bobby...," it always chokes me up.

Dion l almost never lived to sing this classic because he was offered a seat on Buddy Holly's plane for $36. Dion had plenty of money but thought that was his parent's rent in Brooklyn so he took the cold bus with Waylon who gave his seat to someone who wasn't feeling well. Buddy said jokingly I HOPE YOU FREEZE and Waylon replied I HOPE YOUR PLANE CRASHES. This always haunted Waylon

Mom's Mabley was a stand-up comic. She was one of the first successful black female stand-up comics. She started out playing gigs on the Chitlins belt which was a geograhic circuit of clubs around the U.S. that black comic performers played. Jewish comics had their geographical area (mostly in the Catskills mountains in New York) where they performed called the Borscht belt. This was because a lot of Black and Jewish comedians were barred from performing in many of the. white clubs around country. My parents use to buy her comedy albums back in the 1960s. I never heard her sing until now.

Sad to me this is the first time you heard this. Yes she was there and knew three of them personally. This is a classic performance during a time that todays generation stands on the shoulders of and even greater reason to be vigilant and alert and now allow backsliding and push forward to continue progress. We can never forget!!!

Moms Mabley was pretty famous back then - and she probably knew Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy personally. For her, it probably was about as personal as it gets. I don't think young people today can ever really grasp what the murder of Martin Luther King on April 4, 1968 and the murder of Bobby just two months later did to so many of us who hoped for a better and freer country of love, justice, and peace. It was a very emotional time for many of us anyway, and I supposed that Moms Mabley felt it much more. I'm surprised she could get through the song at all.

Moms was hilarious. Easily the funniest comedian in the history of comedy. She often sang songs at the end of her routines. Sometimes she'd hit your heart with songs like this. She referred to her audiences as her "babies." She was a treasure and all without being vulgar and filthy mouthed. Her comedy pushed the boundaries a bit but she didn't cross the line. I love Moms Mabley. I listen to her comedy albums when I need a laugh. I hope you will too. You'll fall in love with her too.
