- This is from a cassette recording of a live performance which was broadcast on BBC radio sometime around 1980 or 1981. Unfortunately I don't know any more about it such as the venue or exact date.
the chieftains are the soul of Ireland i was born in the irish republic how lucky can one be
Really lovely tune, and played brilliantly.Well done lads.
Sean O’Riada and the Chieftains totally changed my view of Irish music.
Fanny must have been delighted with this
This was written by the blind harper and composer Turlough O'Carolan, he lived 1670 - 1738. He wrote many tunes and songs to patrons while travelling round Ireland. Fanny Power was a teenager living ca. here: 53°11'00.2"N 8°35'14.8"W , in 1732 she married a Richard Trench so the tune is also called 'Madame Trench'. I think he also wrote tunes for both her parents, they must have been good to him.
O'Carolan's Concerto is my favourite piece! Simply fascinating.
Jens: Well done, absolutely right; in fact the tune Panxty Mrs Power (Fanny's mother) is more popularly known as Carolan's concerto.
A wonderful recording. Flawless indeed. Thank you!
The sound quality is really impressive, being from a cassette recording.
Thank you for posting this!!! Fanny Power is perhaps my favorite piece of Irish folk music, and I love this rendition. For being a cassette recording, the sound is flawless.
I have been learning a harmony for Fanny Power to play on my flute and the tuning works perfectly (in D)
Será un grupo que nunca olvidaré salud y suerte por darnos tan gratos momentos en la vida
Nice, I love this song.
R.I.P Paddy
Bravo!
Oh, and I was there!
It was recorded at Cambridge Folk Festival in 1983 (or possibly 1982??) and was broadcast by the BBC Folk on 2 programme (? name of show) I too have a cassette recording but can't find it and its quality was not very good.
Thank you so much-it is one of my very favourite recordings, and I haven't been able to find them playing this tune.
Go raibh míle maith agat! Thank you so much. This is a fantastic treasure of a recording. Excellent quality!
Fanny Power sounds like the battle song of Women's LIb.
None better!!🇮🇪☘️
1981, I have one LP from BBC transcription, the whole concert
Rich happy virtuosity
I 'disliked' this recording by accident. In fact, it's a wonderful piece of music played beautifully by great musicians. As others have commented, the sound quality is superb.
Many thanks
