Damnit. Glad I was able to see them for the last few minutes of that concert back in 1993. All my friends listened to nirvana. I found the Chieftains. RIP Paddy. You gave this young teen something more uplifting than the dreck and misery that surrounded me, and has stayed with me all these years.
Patty Maloney inspired me to learn the tin whistle, and also the pipes... This show was the first time I SAW someone play a bagpipe, although I was eventually taught to play the GHB, I'd still love to learn to Uilleann pipes someday. Such a lovely octopus.
We had finished our duty and were making our way through Dublin Airport Terminal , to our hotel. The PA system in the terminal was fantastic, so lifelike, as I recognised the music of the Chieftains. Then I heard the applause !! Following the sound, I unwittingly walked around a corner to find myself staring at the audience and just one front row seat left :). Over my right shoulder were the Chieftains. In full uniform , trying not to look shocked, I took my seat, ( I took my hat off ) and thoroughly enjoyed the inaugural Boil the Breakfast Early concert . It was fantastic. Now I’m going to watch this video again.
Excellent!!! They were a refined group. They were pros that didn't use gimmicks. They could also sit down in a pub session with musicians that wandered off the street. RIP Paddy, Martin, Derek.
RIP Paddy Maloney, I missed his death. I live in France, so it's not too surprising. IMO, Paddy was the best of the pipers. And I've seen Seamus Ennis play at the Royal Albert Hall... I've followed the Chieftains since legendary British DJ John Peel started playing their music in the early 70's.
The first song, one of my favorites of the Chieftains. I saw them play in their prime in Berkley, CA in the very early 80's I'll never forget it. I rarely give a standing ovation, because like with tipping, with me, you have to earn it. They earn it to the max!
My brother birthday treated me to a Chieftans concert in London. Not his sort of music. He loved it. His comment was that it was the first concert that he’d been to where the audience were actually dancing in the isles!
Paddy was a great musical soul, who could get the sound of life out of a penny tin whistle, and even more out of the Uillann pipes. And he was in good company in the Chieftains.; brilliant all.
I am always inspired by the way the band performs, their music always seems calming and energetic at the same time.Keep up the great work lads and hope for years to come.
That because it’s not his breath but his soul that’s coming out of that $2.00 tin whistle! You can see that with Carlos Santana and the late Les Paul with their guitars.
Fell in love with the Chieftans when I checked out a record from Atlanta Public Library in the '70's. Still listening to them, I expanded my music over the years and became familiar with more than just my family's Irish side. I went to their concerts and my friends' son played with them on his fiddle and concertina once. Did they break up after Derek's death? I know a priest who looks a lot like Paddy. I doubt if he knows how to play bagpipes.
There's a wee story that Billy Connolly used to tell about the night The Chieftans, The Dubliners and Nazareth played a triple bill at the Glasgow Apollo. All the bouncers' leave was cancelled that evening, and, apparently, Paddy and co. drank them all under the table.
You can learn to be good on the tin whistle from the internet. The teachers on the internet explain things very simply and it's easy to learn from them.
Is there some place I can buy a decent audio (or video) version of THIS SPECIFIC medley. My favorite piece is the middle tune - Mabel Kelly featuring Paddy Moloney on the tin whistle. All the other versions I have seen Matt Molloy is featured in Mabel Kelley on the Irish Flute. I would really like to buy this version if I can find it and/or figure what if any album it is on.
Hi Gary - I don't think that this particular medley was ever recorded. Best I can do is to tell you that "Morgan Magan" is on "Chieftains 4", the other 2 feature in a medley on "Chieftains 5".
I think 1987 or 1988. They also played a suite of Breton music in that concert, and their "Celtic Wdding" record was released on 1986. Other tracks on the same video tape are from 1987 and 1988. My best guess.
RIP Derek Bell. A gifted and extremely talented Northerner.

All but Kevin and Matt, gone or in Sean's case,no longer a part of the band.So strange.Rest in peace,Paddy,Martin,Derek. You're all of you much missed.
+100
Make me always feel a sense of life during bad times. Never forget, always in my heart, feeling warm support every time listening.
Rest in peace Sean Keane and Dereck Bell.
Also RIP Derek Bell.
Ever feel nostalgia for a place you've never been to? That's what music like this does to me.
Was born into early 70,s west of ireland. We had no end of shit to deal with but we had this music

I saw them play at West Point, they were wonderful.
I played with these guys many years ago when I was in the Belfast Harp Orchestra.Truly an honour ❤
Happy to say I saw this same line-up play with Van Morrison on my 21st birthday - great experience!
Excellent!!! They were a refined group. They were pros that didn't use gimmicks. They could also sit down in a pub session with musicians that wandered off the street. RIP Paddy, Martin, Derek.
O'Carolin wrote many beautiful songs!... Thanks Chieftains... This is So Good!!🎶🎵🎶
After ten years of searching for this song, suddenly found her, i feel calm in my sheast laying in my bed and let it go. 💕

This music brings back memories. Coming home from school and it was playing on the radio. I grew up on a farm and life was simple.
From back in the days when it was enough to be a good musician...
Glad beyond measure I saw them live decades ago. God Bless them all for the beauty they gave us.
So many of them gone. So missed. Thank you for the joy😊
Went to a concert with The Chieftains in Bergen, Norway, many years ago. I´m so happy to have seen them live. I`m a huge fan.
I agree, saw them in Richmond Virginia and had the time of my life 👍
Sissel brought me here to listen to The Chieftans. Can't believe I never bought any of their albums.
right, I saw them twice in Germany in the 80s - just powerful!
@@kenchristie9214wow, I didn‘t know she also is into celtic music! Love her norwegian songs!
@@waltertanner7982 Sissel does the best version of Shenandoah with Paddy Moloney on penny whistle & Kalle Moraeus on violin.

I love this. Well, I would!
Lovely
Love the third Planxty Johnson...makes me so proud of being Irish.
The love and passion the chieftains have for Irish traditional music is just astounding a gift to Ireland
Very uplifting and soothing touched me to the core.I think i'll go make a cup of Irish breakfast tea.
Great arrangement of one of my favourites.
super to my ear !

The greatest ever. Good bumps.
Love this tune. A bit of it in the chieftains with friends late late show 1987(youtube) oncore. Im no fiddle player by the way, in case im wrong.
Well, this proves you can do anything on an autoharp. Simply beautiful. Thank you.
Beautiful. Master musicians and a great bunch of lads.
How on earth does Paddy Moloney get such beautiful music out of a simple tin whistle? Wonderful musicians, every one of them.
That question keeps me up at night too! Quite phenomenal.
he has talent up ya boy ya paddy go on ya gud thing we have cream of the crop irish legands they chieftains

Stumbled upon this by accident. An accident with a happy ending !
Mighty stuff lads.

I know it's been recorded many times but Morgan Megan is still a favorite...
I agree. Came here looking for it.
Wish I could play the tin whistle!
It's never too late to learn. Go for it !
You can learn to be good on the tin whistle from the internet. The teachers on the internet explain things very simply and it's easy to learn from them.
What is the instrument at 0:40 it looks like a bagpipe without the mouthpiece?
A type of bagpipes used in Irish traditional music, known as "uilleann pipes".
"uilleann" being the Irish for elbow, which is what pumps the air in place of the lungs used to inflate bagpipes
