  • The term “gunfighter” is used heavily in discussions of the wild west. This is despite the word being a general phrase meant to describe a number of professions on the western frontier. It could reference ranchers and cowboy archetypes you see in artistic representations of the time period. It could also relate to polar opposites. Both lawmen and outlaws alike were forms of gunfighters, always armed and ready for a show, either for the greater good or the selfish bad. Even folks stuck with the labels of “con man” and “gambler” were referred to generally as gunfighters. Of all the professions spanning all the industries, the most fascinating subgroup of gunfighters was the bounty hunters, men dispatched by both the government and powerful entities to venture out across the land in search of wanted outlaws.
While bounty hunting wasn’t as popular a career as many Hollywood films would suggest, it was a way for some of the most experienced and isolated gunfighters to make a living, while using their talents to the best of their abilities. To cover these intriguing and incendiary figures of western frontier lore, here’s the next video in our series of both famous and infamous bounty hunters, continuing with the legendary assassin and title-winning sharpshooter, James “Deacon Jim” Miller, sometimes better known by his hired hand sobriquet, “Killer Miller.”

The picture that you show at 7:00 is of the famed Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, not the other guy.

His grandparents were not murdered. They all died of old age. His mother’s parents died and are buried in Mountainburg, Arkansas. His father parents in York, Pennsylvania. Don’t know where this fabricated story began, but amazing how it’s stuck around and repeated in practically every book and documentary about him.

I’m wondering whether miller himself pointed toward this happening and simply never corrected himself

@@josephwear9572I doubt it. He kept his business separate from his family life. He was very family oriented. Of all the bad things he did, I don’t believe he would’ve ever suggested something like that.

@@R.S.G879 There is no record of this ever happening, but there are census records, death certificates, and graves that prove that it could not have happened. I’ve done my research. I know the cemeteries where they are all buried. And besides that, this is my family, and I was told all my life this didn’t happen. So I’m not exactly clueless, bud.

I’d call Jim Miller a lot of things but a bounty hunter isn’t one of them
