- In the final episode of Dracula: A Reader's Guide, we look at Van Hesling and Dr Seward, who represent the side of rationality and reason. I show how the big difference between these two men of science is that while Dr Seward is limited by the rationalist point of view, Professor Van Helsing combines this knowledge with spiritual, and pagan insight, making him the hero of Bram Stoker's Novel.

I have a recommendation for another readers guide series, two actually: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and since you’ve mentioned Oscar Wilde in the first video of this series, The Picture Of Dorian Gray
I'm doing Jekyll and Hyde for my English Literature and I love it! I also read Dorain Gray for fun which was also very good, although I didn't love the ending.
A really thorough and interesting treatment of the novel, thanks for making the series! You didn't get a chance to talk about the reception of Dracula, do you have a favourite interpretation, either in literature or film?
I think my favourite is the film version by Francis Ford Coppola. It does play a bit fast and loose with the romantic side of the text, but I think it captures some of the spirit of the story well, the acting is (mostly) great and the look of it is beautifully gothic.
