I always found that one of the biggest issues with the self-help niche is toxic and dogmatic positivity. I'm not saying everyone says this but the idea of constantly looking at the bright side and shielding yourself from the negativity of life is, at least to me, not the way forward. This world is painful, confusing and horrifying, but it's also beautiful, awe-inspiring and breathtaking and we need to embrace all of it in its entirety.

The world isn't any of those things. It just is what it is. We somehow decide its beautiful/scary, amazing,painful. You think the forest gives a shit that you think its pretty or that at night when no ones around and it's dark that same forest looks scary. Or that it changes anything about reality, how we perceive it. It's just a forest at the end of the day. It is what it is. As is the world. It just is what it is. Let go of your duality about things.

I think Schopenhauer is one of the more easily accessible philosophers. His work has you nodding your head in agreement often, and you realize he is telling you things you know intuitively.
Or the thinks you love to deny or hate to be true. I am sad and everything resonates only that I wish he didn't have to kill the hope lol. He even calls hope confusion between what we wish to happen with it's probability!
I firmly believe that the only power anyone or anything has over my perception, experience and life is the power i give it. That also includes myself. I know that i do not know and that my perception of reality is flawed most of the time if not all the time for it always is based on assumptions which are the result of previous experiences which which are no garuentee for the future and simply fall apart in the face of reality as it is instead of how i wish or want to perceive it. This gives me the opportunity to gradually, slowly, but surely adjust my perspective and perception to the constantly changing reality as it is and develop my self as a responsible human being. The highest good which i could conceptualize for my self is individual responsibility, or the ability to respond as opposed to merely and automatically reacting to circumstances in the way that i was thought and learned to do so. For who am i and what is my life worth and what meaning does it hold if i am not the one who decides how to live live but am lived by it through conditioning from external circumstances and through the opinions and perspectives of others? The only thing i ever have control over is how i choose to look at and deal with external circumstances as they happen, for the mere fact that they do happen. Who i am is the result of anything i have ever experienced, thought, acted out and said. Who i am is not merely the result of external circumstances but a result of how i perceive them. My thoughts are the result of external circumstances and how i perceive these circumstances. My acts and then words are the result of my thoughts. My habits the result of my acts and words, my character the result of my habits, and my Destiny the result of my character. The perspective on this can ofcourse also be turned backwards on this. Whatever way you want to perceive it. Ones own Perception and perspective is all what one has because the freedom and ability to perceive from a different perspective leads to individual responsibility, discipline and freedom of both mind, body and spirit. Another part of the whole is that my experience is also partly the result of my perception. If i change my perception i change my experience and thus my thoughts, acts, words, habits, character and destiny. Self Response Ability. Fear, stress and disease comes from ignorance and brings darkness and death. Knowledge is the light that illuminates, sets free and dispels all darkness and shadows which is nothing but the absence of light. Just as there cannot be light without darkness there can also be no darkness and without light. Live in light and you will live in love, live in darkness and you will not. In the country where i live we say that after rain comes sunshine, but without rain you wouldnt apreciate the sun. Consciousness is that which we experience between differences, contrast is needed in order to experience, live and be. No up without down. Left without right, black without white. Being consiouss is transcending all differences and contrast and to experience all as one and one as all. Denying differences and contrast leads to the exact oposite of being consiouss and experiencing life, it leads to unconsciousness and death.

@@Toxiic115 No, having that mindset doesn't change the fact that you will be very happy at times. The expectation of being happy will also make you more miserable when you won't get it. 2 ways lead to suffering: not getting what you want and getting something that you don't want. Don't try to control what you can't control, rather let go of your expectations and accept what comes your way. It might be great happiness or depressing mediocrity, but at least you're not making it worse.
Arthur Schopenhauer may be a “dark” philosopher but he had really good insights into health and living a good life. He had a habit of taking daily walks no matter the weather. He played the violin. And he also believed that a healthy body is required to bear the brunt of existence. “With health, everything is a source of pleasure… without it, nothing else, whatever it may be, is enjoyable. Health is by far the most important element in human happiness.”
I agree, I always think of Nietzsche as the more upbeat version of Schopenhauer. They both agree on the starting conditions of life but come to completely different conclusions. Makes it all the more painful when people refer to Nietzsche as a nihilist. If anything putting him side by side with Schopenhauer reveals how happy and optimistic his philosophy is.

In order to see beauty you have to first see it in yourself. And that is a Herculian task that most of humanity will die before they get " there". There are stages to get " there". That lack of true love is the primary wound that is saturated with shame of being defective. It's an epidemic on a global scale. I perceive the concept of calling him "darkest" was similar to a marketing strategy. A simple exaggeration for views and clicks. His philosophy was honestly more of the truth and nature of us people.

I hate to admit it, but I think the life view that Schopenhauer has is just the true one. But I think his point of view is achieved only after experiencing a really hard event in your life that shakes yourself to the point you stop see the world for what it's not, and start to see it for what it really is. Very true. When my pa died when I was 15. He grinded at this company for 20 years and it got bought by a bigger corporate company. They wouldn’t honor his stock options or the bonus structure he got paid out on from wins. Basically millions robbed from him and they pretty much said don’t like it? Leave. He was a year away from retiring. All those late nights. He was so angry and the powerlessness of the situation ate away at him. Then he got physically ill. And died 5 months later. I was there for his last moment and the last words he said to me was: “Wait. No. No. I don’t want to die. There’s still so much I have to do. Im not ready. I just want one more chance.” This one event is what shattered my rose colored glasses for life. That’s when the pop music I listened to turned into metal.
Then many people either never read him or fail to understand him at all. His view on life is not complicated. You can sum it up in a very short time period and it could already be life altering. I'd like to add that it doesn’t take much to see the world for what it is. It’s just that most folks never care to look. They rush from one activity to the next but they never stop to _watch_ *all of it* . There are many possibilities that can lead you to question the fabric of our reality. Be it a natural curiosity or a shock.

But I understand why: acknowledge the truth and keep living is really heavy, people don't want to deal with such problems because they are scared to. The only acceptance one must take into account is that we are born and we die. That is the only certainty. The only thing we must accept, lessen the suffering caused by it - but do not be happy. Because to be happy is to constantly pursue the happiness. At the same time, do not be sad - because ti be sad is to 0ursue more sadness. Do not be content- with anything other than death, because to be content is to escape from want; which in itself is striving towards avoiding suffering. Do not strive, just be. Do not "do" being, just "be" being.
@@illeatthat is love really placing my happiness in another person? If so, shouldn’t I feel happy each time I express love to another person? I don’t think that’s the case. Some expressions of love result in pain or suffering like a father or mother rescuing their children from a burning building. You might be focused on romantic love. I think love is much too profound to be simplified to reciprocal model of the exchange of love for happiness. To truly act through love is to be without the expectation of anything in return including happiness. There are plenty of people in this world who express love but don’t love themselves. These people often have the most love to give. So I don’t believe it’s necessary to love yourself so you may love another. However, I also don’t agree you should love yourself over loving others; I think you should do both. Why someone would argue for one over the other makes no sense to me. Yes, let’s all accept we are born then we die but in between there is “doing.” Being born we have no control over but dying and the “doing” we have some choice. So in your “doing” if you choose to “just be” and believe “just being” and loving yourself alone is “enough” then you’ve decided there is no work to do, there is no growth to be had, so it would really make no difference if one were to commit suicide. Isn’t that the likely outcome of such thinking? Why drag out life with all its suffering only to “just be?” Of course, if you said no, life must continue or I must endure life despite suffering then you’re revealing a hidden assumption about the “doing” we humans do. But what is that hidden assumption? That could mean there is some sort of work to be done, there is growth to be had, it’s not sufficient to “just be.” So, you can “be” more by “doing” more and not just for yourself but for all living things.
Schopenhauer is so good that even if you reject his central idea-that the Will is the thing-in-itself-you can still appreciate so many of his descriptions of the phenomenal world for being unique and ahead of his time. Like the role of sex in psychology, a rejection of free will, ethical monism, the value of art, etc. Plus he had the rare gift of being a German metaphysician who was actually readable. I feel like I didn’t really understand Kant until I read Schopenhauer.

Schopenhauer's quote about boredom really got to me in the end, I learned about this back when i was still struggling, thinking well, if i get to the end of this, boredom is certainly better than where i am right now mentally. But nope, i reached the end, got everything i wanted, and now, im bored, bored of life, wanting more, maybe searching for pain, but just wanting something to experience.

One of the most elaborate, rational, revolutionary philosophies of all time, Kant's one, relies on the principle that we are the subject of knowledge and his work, despite being cautions, is extremely optimistic if you know before him there was the absolute scepticism of David Hume.
@@clorulo Well the funny thing was that a lot of Kant's work has optimistic assumptions. He said that there is no way to prove a god but that its better to assume the existence of one just because it is better. I feel like optimism kind of needs assumptions.

My favorite philosopher. I was reading wisdom of life, when something really bad happened in my life and I went to a long depression. It was such an unusual feeling: being so sad and finding such genius in the melancholic way Schopenhauer described life (which is completely true). I don’t recommend anyone read Schopenhauer because it’s saddening, but I’m grateful I found him. 👏🏻

As human beings capable of rational thought and self-reflection, we imagine ourselves to have "free will," which makes us distinct from inanimate objects and animals. you can pretty sum it up by saying we arent the same person, yes our physical bodys are the same, but we are in a constant metapmorphisis of the human body and spirit. How i was 2 years ago isnt even remotley close the to the person i am now, my values and beliefs have changed through my experiences and that is what it comes down to. So if i did do drug in the past, thats fine, but i still do them anyways, thats dosent affect the core of my beliefs rather it enhances the expiernces to make it less gloomy, if we are looking at it form Schopenhauers point of view. overcome desires and minimize pain.

That for some reason was oddly comforting. Like life, will be life. I listen to the song "My Song" and often think of the singer as the universe or God or something. It makes me think we're all kind of eternal or something.
He (Schopenhauer) took everything he ever knew from the Vedic's, Mahabharata, the teachings of Shiva etc...All of these "genius scientists, physicists, and academics knew a small amount of Sanskrit. Reference the movie Oppenheimer. They mention it real quick when someone asks Opie where he is getting these ideas, he said the Vedic's and that he is learning Sanskrit. Sanskrit can and never will be solved in totality because it needs to be sang or sung in a dialect that no longer exists. All Hebrew geniuses stole from India. They are great at copying others.

Schopenhauer strikes you as a nutcase when you first encounter him--a depressive doomsayer who gave up on happiness. Then as you grow older, you find life's travails and ironies leading you to many of the insights he wrote so masterfully.
I love the philosophy of pessimism once you start following it your expectations become so less that you hardly bother when anything doesn't go your way Buddha also said the same thing Lust/desire is the cause of all sorrows

The only solutions are to remain quiet while suffering, or make a direct and confrontational accusation to the perpetrator you are absolutely certain is the source. Do not get caught up in the gray, only black and white exist.
Nice upload. I really appreciate your channel and recommend it to others as well. I am older and I don't get out much at all, but when I do I always carry a book with me and when I am waiting for whatever it is I am doing/waiting on, I read. I get the strangest glances from people. LOL I don't really like reading from a monitor/screen. Nothing (to me) can replace an actual book.
I like the fact that both Arthur Schopenhauer and Fredrick Nietzsche touch upon aspects of yogic hinduism, and Schopenhauer saying going against the will, which could said as primal instinct of life, leads to liberation, which is what yogic hinduism is about, a path inwards, which is kinda terrifying, as many siddhar and yogic Philosophers, also despise traditional temple worship which is also an instinct of man to surrender to a greater power, whom we consider God.
Unlike most philosophers his writings are clear and his writing style is effortless. Studies in pessimism by Arthur Schopenhauer is a supremely underrated short book. Give it a chance. Don't take chapter 7 personally.

I always found that one of the biggest issues with the self-help niche is toxic and dogmatic positivity. I'm not saying everyone says this but the idea of constantly looking at the bright side and shielding yourself from the negativity of life is, at least to me, not the way forward.

Or that it changes anything about reality, how we perceive it. It's just a forest at the end of the day. It is what it is. As is the world. It just is what it is. Let go of your duality about things.

I think Schopenhauer is one of the more easily accessible philosophers. His work has you nodding your head in agreement often, and you realize he is telling you things you know intuitively.

I firmly believe that the only power anyone or anything has over my perception, experience and life is the power i give it. That also includes myself. I know that i do not know and that my perception of reality is flawed most of the time if not all the time for it always is based on assumptions which are the result of previous experiences which which are no garuentee for the future and simply fall apart in the face of reality as it is instead of how i wish or want to perceive it.
This gives me the opportunity to gradually, slowly, but surely adjust my perspective and perception to the constantly changing reality as it is and develop my self as a responsible human being.

My habits the result of my acts and words, my character the result of my habits, and my Destiny the result of my character.
The perspective on this can ofcourse also be turned backwards on this. Whatever way you want to perceive it.
Ones own Perception and perspective is all what one has because the freedom and ability to perceive from a different perspective leads to individual responsibility, discipline and freedom of both mind, body and spirit.
Another part of the whole is that my experience is also partly the result of my perception. If i change my perception i change my experience and thus my thoughts, acts, words, habits, character and destiny.
Self Response Ability. Fear, stress and disease comes from ignorance and brings darkness and death. Knowledge is the light that illuminates, sets free and dispels all darkness and shadows which is nothing but the absence of light.
Just as there cannot be light without darkness there can also be no darkness and without light. Live in light and you will live in love, live in darkness and you will not. In the country where i live we say that after rain comes sunshine, but without rain you wouldnt apreciate the sun.
Consciousness is that which we experience between differences, contrast is needed in order to experience, live and be.
No up without down. Left without right, black without white. Being consiouss is transcending all differences and contrast and to experience all as one and one as all.
Denying differences and contrast leads to the exact oposite of being consiouss and experiencing life, it leads to unconsciousness and death.

@@Toxiic115 No, having that mindset doesn't change the fact that you will be very happy at times. The expectation of being happy will also make you more miserable when you won't get it. 2 ways lead to suffering: not getting what you want and getting something that you don't want.
Don't try to control what you can't control, rather let go of your expectations and accept what comes your way. It might be great happiness or depressing mediocrity, but at least you're not making it worse.

He had a habit of taking daily walks no matter the weather. He played the violin. And he also believed that a healthy body is required to bear the brunt of existence.

I agree, I always think of Nietzsche as the more upbeat version of Schopenhauer. They both agree on the starting conditions of life but come to completely different conclusions. Makes it all the more painful when people refer to Nietzsche as a nihilist. If anything putting him side by side with Schopenhauer reveals how happy and optimistic his philosophy is.

Very true. When my pa died when I was 15. He grinded at this company for 20 years and it got bought by a bigger corporate company. They wouldn’t honor his stock options or the bonus structure he got paid out on from wins. Basically millions robbed from him and they pretty much said don’t like it? Leave. He was a year away from retiring. All those late nights. He was so angry and the powerlessness of the situation ate away at him. Then he got physically ill. And died 5 months later. I was there for his last moment and the last words he said to me was: “Wait. No. No. I don’t want to die. There’s still so much I have to do. Im not ready. I just want one more chance.”
This one event is what shattered my rose colored glasses for life. That’s when the pop music I listened to turned into metal.
You can view life negatively but still exude positivity from your own self .. life is about balance , not one philosophy or another .
Then many people either never read him or fail to understand him at all. His view on life is not complicated. You can sum it up in a very short time period and it could already be life altering.
I'd like to add that it doesn’t take much to see the world for what it is. It’s just that most folks never care to look.
They rush from one activity to the next but they never stop to _watch_ *all of it* . There are many possibilities that can lead you to question the fabric of our reality. Be it a natural curiosity or a shock.

I’ve been there with you Michael. It’s called existential angst. One must wonder, where does love fit in all of this philosophizing? Sure there is suffering, but how much of it can be helped by humanity through love of your fellow human being.

The only acceptance one must take into account is that we are born and we die. That is the only certainty. The only thing we must accept, lessen the suffering caused by it - but do not be happy. Because to be happy is to constantly pursue the happiness. At the same time, do not be sad - because ti be sad is to 0ursue more sadness.
Do not be content- with anything other than death, because to be content is to escape from want; which in itself is striving towards avoiding suffering.
Do not strive, just be. Do not "do" being, just "be" being.

To truly act through love is to be without the expectation of anything in return including happiness. There are plenty of people in this world who express love but don’t love themselves. These people often have the most love to give. So I don’t believe it’s necessary to love yourself so you may love another. However, I also don’t agree you should love yourself over loving others; I think you should do both. Why someone would argue for one over the other makes no sense to me.
Yes, let’s all accept we are born then we die but in between there is “doing.” Being born we have no control over but dying and the “doing” we have some choice. So in your “doing” if you choose to “just be” and believe “just being” and loving yourself alone is “enough” then you’ve decided there is no work to do, there is no growth to be had, so it would really make no difference if one were to commit suicide. Isn’t that the likely outcome of such thinking? Why drag out life with all its suffering only to “just be?” Of course, if you said no, life must continue or I must endure life despite suffering then you’re revealing a hidden assumption about the “doing” we humans do. But what is that hidden assumption? That could mean there is some sort of work to be done, there is growth to be had, it’s not sufficient to “just be.” So, you can “be” more by “doing” more and not just for yourself but for all living things.

Schopenhauer is so good that even if you reject his central idea-that the Will is the thing-in-itself-you can still appreciate so many of his descriptions of the phenomenal world for being unique and ahead of his time. Like the role of sex in psychology, a rejection of free will, ethical monism, the value of art, etc. Plus he had the rare gift of being a German metaphysician who was actually readable. Schopenhauer's quote about boredom really got to me in the end, I learned about this back when i was still struggling, thinking well, if i get to the end of this, boredom is certainly better than where i am right now mentally. But nope, i reached the end, got everything i wanted, and now, im bored, bored of life, wanting more, maybe searching for pain, but just wanting something to experience.

I don't think it is a matter of being rational. One of the most elaborate, rational, revolutionary philosophies of all time, Kant's one, relies on the principle that we are the subject of knowledge and his work, despite being cautions, is extremely optimistic if you know before him there was the absolute scepticism of David Hume.

@@clorulo Well the funny thing was that a lot of Kant's work has optimistic assumptions. He said that there is no way to prove a god but that its better to assume the existence of one just because it is better. I feel like optimism kind of needs assumptions.
rationality is a very narrow window to observe the world from, in my experience the excess of it disagrees with creativity and the sense of wonder

Strangely, when I am down, reading Schop's quotes is grounding and calming.

I was reading wisdom of life, when something really bad happened in my life and I went to a long depression.
It was such an unusual feeling: being so sad and finding such genius in the melancholic way Schopenhauer described life (which is completely true).
I don’t recommend anyone read Schopenhauer because it’s saddening, but I’m grateful I found him.

you can pretty sum it up by saying we arent the same person, yes our physical bodys are the same, but we are in a constant metapmorphisis of the human body and spirit. How i was 2 years ago isnt even remotley close the to the person i am now, my values and beliefs have changed through my experiences and that is what it comes down to. So if i did do drug in the past, thats fine, but i still do them anyways, thats dosent affect the core of my beliefs rather it enhances the expiernces to make it less gloomy, if we are looking at it form Schopenhauers point of view. overcome desires and minimize pain.

Schopenhauer's view of existence constantly moving for the sake of everything is something similar to what I think of and it can be really inspiring sometimes
The truth is pretty sad and negative but that just gives you reason not to worry
Pain and suffering is something that can never be removed from existence unless there wasn't any life and good, then that would just be a universe with no life, a void
It's a scary thought to realize but it just makes your living important, it would be irresponsible to not try and it's not like the Will will be waiting for you
This kind of perspective can make you very humble but pretty pessimistic, good though to be down to earth
That for some reason was oddly comforting. Like life, will be life. I listen to the song "My Song" and often think of the singer as the universe or God or something. It makes me think we're all kind of eternal or something.
He (Schopenhauer) took everything he ever knew from the Vedic's, Mahabharata, the teachings of Shiva etc...All of these "genius scientists, physicists, and academics knew a small amount of Sanskrit. Reference the movie Oppenheimer. They mention it real quick when someone asks Opie where he is getting these ideas, he said the Vedic's and that he is learning Sanskrit. Sanskrit can and never will be solved in totality because it needs to be sang or sung in a dialect that no longer exists. All Hebrew geniuses stole from India. They are great at copying others.

Schopenhauer strikes you as a nutcase when you first encounter him--a depressive doomsayer who gave up on happiness. Then as you grow older, you find life's travails and ironies leading you to many of the insights he wrote so masterfully.
I love the philosophy of pessimism once you start following it your expectations become so less that you hardly bother when anything doesn't go your way Buddha also said the same thing Lust/desire is the cause of all sorrows

Nice upload. I really appreciate your channel and recommend it to others as well. I am older and I don't get out much at all, but when I do I always carry a book with me and when I am waiting for whatever it is I am doing/waiting on, I read. I get the strangest glances from people. LOL I don't really like reading from a monitor/screen. Nothing (to me) can replace an actual book.
I like the fact that both Arthur Schopenhauer and Fredrick Nietzsche touch upon aspects of yogic hinduism, and Schopenhauer saying going against the will, which could said as primal instinct of life, leads to liberation, which is what yogic hinduism is about, a path inwards, which is kinda terrifying, as many siddhar and yogic Philosophers, also despise traditional temple worship which is also an instinct of man to surrender to a greater power, whom we consider God.
Unlike most philosophers his writings are clear and his writing style is effortless. Studies in pessimism by Arthur Schopenhauer is a supremely underrated short book. Give it a chance. Don't take chapter 7 personally.
