Sensei Matt , I do not find anything at all wrong with the way you teach . The fact that I can follow your classes on line is great . And I appreciate the fact that you know your students . It would be easy for a man 75 years old like myself to become sedetary . I believe your classes probably add quality years to ones life .
Matt, when i was driving to the therapist two days ago, i saw a gentleman walking down the street carrying groceries. He appeared to be in his mid 20's, over 6 ft. in height and slender build. He was walking eastbound on the sidewalk, as i was traveling westbound. As i neared his location, four identical very large dogs, (unknown breed but black and white long hair variety), charged him from across the street probably originating at a dilapidated house with a broken front fence. There was no doubt, by their demeanor, they were in attack mode. He dropped his groceries and attempted to flee but the animals gained on him. Being i was unable to physically assist him due to the ankle support boot i am now wearing, and this being a very aggravated situation wand the physical harm this gentleman faced, i made the decision to use my vehicle's horn to try to stop the animals conduct. If this didn't dissuade the dogs, i was prepared to use my vehicle, to terminate the attack for the sake of the gentleman.. As i reached the pack, the gentleman was seconds from the actual attack, and unable to escape. Constantly using the horn, it did confuse the animals to the point they broke off the attack and fled, except for one. I again used the car horn as i drove right up to the dog, almost making contact, but it too finally fled with the pack. The gentleman was not injured just in a state of extreme panic. After gaining his composure, he called the authorities, and walked to his residence. This situation was not instigated by the victim, but is a prime example of how if the gentleman had a walking staff, it may have helped him in not being victimized. God bless. Doug.
What a great story. I have been chased by several dogs in my life. I just turned 60 and I think my ability to outrun attackers might be waning. Years ago I use to work at a bar that was close to one of our popular hiking trails and one of the old hikers that use to stop by always carried a golf club. We talked about it one time. It was a multipurpose item.
My 'Son in Law' moved to "Fort Myers," about 150 miles, or so, from you---his name is Shawn. He was trained in Jui Jitsu, and Military Hand to Hand Combat. He actually was a part of one of the "Nat- ional Security Teams" up until about 11--12 years ago. He has actual Combat experience. Despite my background, I wouldn't want to tangle with him; But then, he's only 43---I'm 71!

I'm in the UK and I have muscle and joint weakness from long covid. I've started doing staff spinning to help my joints and hand eye coordination. Never done it before. It's addictive.
@@TheWrightTimes you have to loosen the grip during the spin and allow it to slide back to the middle. It takes time but you will get it. Try slowing down for a few sessions.
Hi Matt, great to see you again. I got fitted with a "Herman Munster" support boot for my left foot with the minor tendon tear and also using my jo to assist get around. I can drive now, so i can finally get that item shipped to you, that we discussed. Not really much pain, and should be good to go, in about 6 weeks. Glad you `had the bo class again, being i can only perform stationary standing spinning drills at this time, and also using my 7/8 inch cane. Stay safe. Doug.
Made several sticks in various lengths from old rakes and former garden tools. Found 39 inches best for me but work with 55 inch handle too. Tried coconut oil for the finish..
REPOSTING ATTEMPT I was the first to comment on this video and it got removed for some reason so I am trying to post a different version of it in hopes that it won't happen again. In the post that got removed I had an Amazon link and I wonder if that was the cause of its removal. Ready Service Station for Sticks and Other Things Command Brand makes a gripper that sticks to walls and is meant to hold brooms and mops but they can hold other things as well. I have been using one for years to hold my mop. These grippers are very similar to the devices that hold shotguns in the front of police cars. I tested my one-inch oak dowel with it yesterday and it seemed to work fine. It holds what it can securely and you just grab and pull to release it. This should help us in prepositioning our equipment.
I am very surprised that this post hasn't gotten any likes or replies yet. As far as I can tell it hasn't been hidden. You can put your self defense sticks on any wall ready to go when you want or need them. You can use these grippers to hold a stick to the underside of a table and other places.
Yep , oil on your weapon is very important, for the reasons you said . When I joined the Marine Corps in 1963 we kept our rifle in our individual wall locker . We were expected to linseed oil our rifle stock at least weekly .
First time seeing your video. Love it. Plan on using the exercises with my students to build wrist, arm and shoulder strength and build hand eye coordination.

Another way to soak the dowels is using PVC pipe. Get the appropriate diameter, cut to length and cap the end....

I've been putting olive oil on mine. I figure olives are a plant, wood is a plant, they should work together. And it's meant for food, so no poisons.
That’s ok for a little bit here and there but because it is a food it can go rancid and stink. I learned that the hard way.

Is there a rule of thumb for sizing a staff to yourself? Let's say you're six foot tall.
Go for a six foot staff. That’s the standard size too but the rule is about as tall as you are
