Derik is a beast and can stand up with the greats, he actually plays realistic chops. So many people teaching Marcus & Victor licks that you will never use ( unless you have a bass solo show) but Derik keeps it 100 and teaches real chops that are necessary in real day to day gigs. As a professional working bassist I often stop by and check out Derek and steal a few licks. I feel like I should send him some money. Great job brah

I agree, but I don´t see how important are these complex gospel licks in today´s music. The gospel is turning into "any kind of music played in a church". Any style of music can be played as a pray, in modern churchs!

    • @nathaniellollis3868

@@acprado67 I'm GLAD someone else is saying "ANY kind of music in church". Might as well be a club nowadays!!! No difference between the church and the world. If a church isn't holding to and preaching THE WORD OF GOD, but instead is adopting the worldly aspects of the WORLD, why bother going to church? That's why I STOPPED going to "church".

Dude, I've been drumming since I was 5 and started playing the bass seriously at 55 and now almost 60, I can tell you honestly I wish I had done this WAY, WAY sooner! I love playing bass as much as the drums and in some ways more! Unfortunately, it took a serious back injury for me to really consider the bass.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
      Best of luck to you!

More like this please! Question: Okay, we know that gospel continuously influenced every other genre all through the 20th century from jazz to Ray Charles to Stax and Motown to the Band and Elton John and so on, but this insanely great bass-playing on this video has all sorts of elements where secular music gave influences back to gospel. So secular bassist Larry Graham, for example, influenced this 21st Century gospel bass playing. (Or maybe not? Maybe some gospel bassist influenced Graham?)
    Questions:
    1. When did gospel bassists begin to play in this style in the churches and gospel recordings?
    2. Can you give us a typical example of how live church gospel bass might have been played around 1960?
