AWESOME advice, Will - this will help SO many owners! My favourite part: Establish a new command that no other household members use on the dog (who then NOT make it come every single time; yep happened to me, too, and "killed" the "come here"). I have started using "Aqui!", the Portuguese command, for my puppy now, shamelessly taking advantage of the fact that my blessed British husband can be trusted to not be able to voice - or even if trying, to correctly pronounce - Portuguese words, hurray!
Thanks so much for this! My labrador has recently turned 1 and his recall went downhill (around other dogs) when he hit the 'teenage' period. We've had so much mixed advice from different trainers, where they say let them off and walk the other way etc. Which didn't work for us. He's also a bit of an unusual Labrador in the sense of he is not food driven at all... I once cooked up some fresh chicken and ham for training and he took it as a reward but spat it out and continued sniffing the ground etc haha. He also isn't interested with toys on walks, which I guess means he just finds the walk more interesting? I've now (only two days in) started taking him for 2x 45-1hour walks down our quiet country lane on a long lead training his recall. So far he's doing great, but I know I am in the very early stages. I'm hoping with doing this for 3 weeks or so, I will be able to start taking him places with a bit more distractions and finally around other dogs. I was wondering if you could advise me. Should I always let him run off to greet other dogs and then do recall if he doesn't come away/follows the dog's in the direction they are going, and if yes how long do I allow him to play/greet other dogs, or should I not allow him to greet until I say so? I feel like because his recall went downhill so quick I automatically anticipate he's doing to be naughty and in turn try to recall him before he's even greeted the other dogs... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to do your bootcamp course too! I love your style of teaching, thanks so much for your amazing advice ❤️
One thine I've found is "never ask for something you're not likely to get." If you accidentally get into a position where it is likely the dog won't come and you cannot enforce it, DON'T call him. Go get him. Work up slowly with distractions (something a TON of people miss), and be mindful of when those distractions are probably too high.

How do you how do you know if your German Shepherd or one of your German Shepherds runs off but you don't know how they got off one of their later leashes
I have a dog aggressive Golden retriever but more senior would have no issues you filming us working thruw issues. I love him and he is a rescue so I may have been abit too lenient with him. That's on me but I'd love to have him in a more obedient spot before he goes. At very least get me better understanding and better skill set for next/new puppy
This is so helpful as we are working in this area right now with a longline in progression to going off lead reliably and with me in complete control. My GSD is approaching 9 months and he has been giving me the middle finger when to commands that I know he knows and has always done before, so this also explains a lot! One question though, I often see videos about dogs being aggressive on lead and trainers working with that, mine is very over enthusiastic about seeing other dogs and will bounce and create a fuss on seeing another dog across the road, and although we are working on it and we have vast improvement, I struggle to find advice that isn't directed at aggressive dogs. I've had to implement a no greeting on lead policy and only seen improvement since doing that, but I often get people tell me this is a terrible idea as it will make him fearful or nervous eventually. He loves other dogs and he plays in the dog park off lead brilliantly, we do it often so he is kept socialised, but for us we cannot greet on lead because he cant understand when he can't meet them all. What are your thoughts?
Might seem obvious but you could do a video on how to teach children to behave arround dogs/puppies. Might seem obvious but there are so many cases where people don’t do it properly
Yeah... my puppy behaves pretty good with me but totally different with my 8 year old... I keep telling him stay calm around the puppy but being a kid he acts like one 😀
We have a 5 yr old mutt 2 yr old aussie tri red (full size) 12 week old blue merle mini aussie (mini american shepard) 5 yr old mutt is diabetic dog walks well etc. aussie is very crazy randomly but herds sheep 2 times a week with another aussie at the farmers house.. the mini aussie is in a puppy class for basically socialization to gain his confidence with other dogs teaching sit stay etc... and safe dogs with shots for him to play with that aren't over 50 pounds..lol. he is around dogs of all sizes not just a 55 pound and a 80 pounder...
My boy is going through teenage period going back to basics- trouble focusing either too much drive or in sleepy mode once we've walked off initial energy. Always avoided whistle will give it a go as he is not very food oriented - hes on a long line my palms look like a builders- Lovely temperament when playing,Just plays hard-
My bullmastiff has no recall at all. Guess who needs the puppy class? Me! That's who 😂 😭 I resorted to keeping a bag of quavers in my pocket to recall her back. We have a whistle so will try with the sound and reward system. Thank you.
Re Bite Pressure You could look at the Australian Pig Dog. I own a retired Pig Dog . His record is 142kg of VERY ANGRY FIGHT FOR ITS LIFE BOAR. By himself holding on to the pigs ear until my son goes in to slit the pig's throat. How's that for getting a dog into the RED MIST ZONE. Sounds violent but these dogs love it. They wear armour, but it isn't 100% safe. I would love to sit down with you cos so many things that you do I do without any formal training of myself.
We have a 9 year old Schnauzer/Pug mix. He recalls really well when doing obedience training, but having issues with recall when taking him to wee. Would you recommend an E-Collar or the brilliant idea of using a new command? Thanks so much! Love the videos with your wife and her inputs!
Just what I needed. I have finished the puppy course and the recall was working good until now. My puppy is almost 9 month and the 2 beeps on the whistle doesn’t work anymore. 🙄
Classic age for boundaries to be pushed during adolescence and one of the most common issues people have with recall as they think they have it nailed then this kicks in. Go back to basics, always use a long line to guarantee success, limit distractions and build it up slowly to ensure success and remind them that not only is it compulsory but it's also an amazing and positive experience when they do.

I would love to know what your thoughts are on introducing your dog to a new baby. We are having our first child and we have 2 mastiff breeds (Cane Corso and a Dogo Argentino), they have had minimal exposure around children in the past, not from a lack of trying, but more because most of our friends and family don’t have young children yet or anymore. Our Corso seems to get a little too excited around young kids and I am not sure how to curb his enthusiasm. And I’m not sure how to properly introduce him to the new baby, who is due any day now. Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point.
Hi will I’m 14 years old and have a huge part especially recently in my cocker spaniel Charlie’s life. He has basic obedience training like sit, lay down, and a perfect stay whilst distracted. I’ve been training his recall and when no dogs are around he is brilliant but put a dog in that situation unless I have a a stay command on. But he just won’t come back to me when he is sniffing another dog and I have had issues with abit if aggression especially towards larger dogs and then I have no control when he is of lead anything to help with that aggression and some anxiety with larger dogs would be greatly appreciated. I have been looking into your course but don’t have the funds currently. Thanks

Hi Planet Craft, we had a similar case once in a dog school where I was assistant trainer, with a 5 months old Labrador. The way we addressed this behaviour was to always have him leashed during feeding sessions, and apply leash correction, along with a strong voice command ("No!", "Leave it!" or whatever is the command you're using for your Golden girl). The next step was to bring our hands closer and closer to the bowl whilst the dog was eating. But today, I would not recommend this, as it could get you nipped. Instead, why not try offer her - after using the No!- or Leave it! command, something she's after even more than her normal kibble, trash or socks, like, bits of cooked chicken? This way, she connects your "pesky interference" with something even BETTER being given to her. Best of luck!

I came here not because my recall is broken but because my dog is a rescue and I want to train him the right way. We have only tried it at home or in very controlled dog parks but I don't like his response. I don't jump around to get his attention either. Sometimes he comes back and sometimes he doesn't. I want my dog to be able to go to a big open dog park and run full out and not have to worry that he could go through an open gate and get away. I know how to train my dog to some extent. But finer points like this I don't know.

Okay, so let's say that my wife has perfect recall with my dog, but I have no recall. If I implement the whistle and have success with that, is that going to ruin the recall that my wife is using without the whistle?
I have a beagle pup and even if she sees a bag of treats and I call her she would rather have the treat that is in my hand rather than the bag of them idk why
I'm not sure where this person asking the question is from, but if you're not from a country that has banned ecoller's, then that's what I would suggest. Go binge watch Larry Krohn, buy his book and start training.
I ended up having to rely on his need to protect me and I’d sit on the ground at the dog park facing away from him, ignoring him... and without fail he would come sit next to me facing the opposite way to watch my back... and I’d just reach over and pop his leash back on him and we’d head home... hahaha... he was 100% obedience trained to a high level... but one day found a higher level treat than my praise... unseen dogs behind a fence... NOTHING would get him away from them
There are leash laws in lots of places too. Just because your dog is good off leash, it doesn't give you the right to break the leash law. Also, not all dogs are good off leash and I HATE when an off leash dog charges up to me and my dog and the owner says stupidly 's/he never does this' B.S. Oh, so furious. Keep your dog on a leash.

I have a TM...recall is just silly. We just don't expect it from her and keep her on a long line for romps. Problem solved.

Have to say that the recall works good with no distractions. But when something interesting shows up, like a rabbit, it is nobody home. 😉

Keep at it, follow the tips in this video and try to gradually increase the level of distraction. Stay persistent!

MONTHS TO TEACH RECALL??? An ecoller teaches it in a matter of 3/4 weeks. And is far more reliable.
An ecollar is aversive.
@@Waggyweddingevents and? I used an ecoller for my lab cause he is completely non food driven. He learned the sensation goes away once he comes back.
