Visualization of a German Panzer Division in 1939 according to the planned outfit for the “1. Panzer Division” (1st German Tank Division) on 1. September 1939 in contrast with the actual numbers.

Notes on accuracies
(1) This is the „ideal/planned“ layout of German Panzer Division in World War 2 as orderd for the 1. Panzer Division. With the Kriegsstärkenachweisungen (K. St. N.) 1103 (Sd), 1194 (Sd), 1168 (Sd), 1107 (Sd), 1171 (Sd), 1175 (Sd), 1178 (Sd) from the 1st September 1939, due to the war and a general lack of tanks on the German side the division probably never reached this setup, especially since the Panzer Division got restructured again and again. From 1939 to 1941 the number of tanks in a Panzer Division decreased by almost 50 %.
(2) Furthermore, the types of armored cars represented in the video is simplified. I know there were around 90 armored cars (Niehorster link) in the division, but I could only determine the exact types and numbers for 56 of those 90. They were Sdkfz 221, Sdkfz 222, Sdkfz 223, Sdkfz 231, Sdkfz 232, Sdkfz 274, Sdkfz 260, Sdkfz 261, Sdkfz 263.

+Caesar Himself already planned, did quite some research on 1941 division before I switched to 1939, but it is on very low priority right now, thus probably not coming til summer or even 2017. The US Army, Soviets and Japanese will probably get a some videos prior. Maybe also the British and French.

To directly answer your query about mid-late 1944 Panzer Divisions, the Panzer Regiment normally had 2 Abteilung; about 80 Pz.IV Ausf.H or Ausf.J in one Abt. and about 70-80 Pz.V/"Panther" in the other Abt. If a StuG. unit was attached, or normally part of (organic to), the Division - add around 20-35 StuG and StuH. THEORETICALLY,
Panzer Divisions of 1944 contained about 140-180 tanks and 3,800-4,500+ vehicles (consisting of cars, trucks, trailers, artillery, and other equipment). For most Panzer Divisions the quantities are less.
No two Panzer Divisions were alike; there were theoretical tables of Organization & Equipment (Gleiderung, KStN) with some semblance of standards. However, shortages, petty empire building, tactical & strategic blunders, and combat/wastage losses resulted in reality varying, sometimes way less than, what clerks scratched on paper (for examples see specific unit histories - if/where available).
Elite units (e.g. Pz.Gren.Div. "GrossDeutschland," Pz.Div. "Lehr," Pz.Div. "Herman Goering," 1.-3., 5., 12.-SS Pz.Div. ...) were likely to have greater authorized numbers upon rest & refit.
Finally, there are Kampfgruppe and attached units from higher H.Q. (e.g. Korps, Heeresgruppe/Armeegruppe). See Kampfgruppe Peiper for an example of a large unit. Attaching units could last from a few hours to several weeks or months. Thus, once you're familiar with several KStN, almost anything, within some glimmer of reason, could be attached to a theoretical Panzer Division.

A standard Wehrmacht Panzer Division consisted of around 12,000 personnel.
It seems Hans brought in the Division's Heavy Tank Company.
A Heavy Tank Company consisted of 6 platoons.
A Lead Group, consisting of 2 Tanks, 2 Staff Cars, and 2 Staff Bikes.
The Lead Group would contain the Kompanieführer, a Panzerkommandant, a Haptfeldwebel, an NCO, 5 Vehicle Crew NCOs, 7 Vehicle Crew, and an Enlisted.
A platoon would consist of 4 tanks, and be staffed with a Zugführer, a Stellv. Zugführer, 2 Panzerkommandants, 9 Vehicle Crew NCOs, and 7 Vehicle Crew.
An additional division of replacement crew could be included, consisting of 2 Panzerkommandants, 2 Vehicle Crew NCOs, and 6 Vehicle Crew.
All that personnel for a single M1 Stuart, shows the true might of the Americans during the war.

IIRC, after *Fall Gelb*, the number of tanks per division was reduced, as it was that the divisions were too "tank heavy" and not as flexible.

One of my Grandfathers was a commander in the 1st. All were given the divisions diary after the war. I did read it almost 50 years agol. I'm very sad about its loss. One of my uncles lost the book. I can't ask him as he died years ago as well.

I have a question. How wide of a front would a german infantry or armour division typically cover? 50 miles wide,100 miles wide? I take it early war would be different compared to late war since late war had less divisions ?
thank you! good question and I don't know it yet, but you just gave me an idea, I added your question into a new made list: "good questions". Although I can provide you some data on the Soviets in 1942 for Winter 1942 (20th Nov 1942). Southwest Front 1 division for 10 km, Don Front: 1 division for 5.8 km, Stalingrad Front 10.8km, total / average 1 division for 9.2 km.

Those numbers you have given me on the Soviets are a great starting point . I crave to know what the limit of a German divisions operational front was . I see in Roberts Kirchubel Atlas of the Eastern front that on some maps some divisions seem to be covering a few miles right up to 20 or more miles.

There is value in knowing numbers, but like you said context makes a big difference in understanding the numbers. What is the purpose of a Panzer Division? What are typical missions. A brief discussion of the duties/purpose of the various units would be very beneficial. What is the purpose of the light companies, medium companies etc.? Other helpful info would be what specific tank types were used for? Why was it significant that there were too few Pzkw III? I don't think you would add a too much to the length of the vid, but you would add tremendous value.
You should make a sequel/follow up to this, showing how Panzer Division organization changed as the war progressed and resources became more limited and spread thin.

So aside from the poor quality of the tanks, the biggest problems I see is the lack of tracked vehicles to transport infantry and the lack of self-propelled artillery and anti-tank guns. The only assault guns that could keep up with the advance would seem to be in the limited number of Panzer IVs. Oh, and AAA, but that would fall under the Luftwaffe. It would be nice to know what Luftwaffe units would normally accompany a Panzer division at this time.
You are spot on, and this is something that Heer faced when it attacked the Red Army with their T-34. They had to repurpose the 88s (anti aircraft guns) to kick out the Russians.
Many people forget that the main way of transportation for the germans soldiers was and remained horses, in fact...
YUP, stubby panzer III's were ineffective but the ONLY reason the germans gained ground was blitzkrieg, so they managed to outmanuever and take out the T34's...but it was painfull due to their guns being such crap.
The other problem is the lack of infantry, period. Not just transport, but there's only a handful of infantry to accompany a rather larger number of tanks. The reorganization done in late 1940 made for a much more efficient, balanced Panzer Division as would be seen in the successes of 1941.

+jake brown thank you. Of course, I have a lot of planned and quite some back log. Also, I need to have proper information, right now I only have limited information on British stuff, but I didn't do any research yet, so I guess I can find "something" ;) It will probably take a few months.
Awesome one of the main things you've got to keep in mind is that british infantry regiments tend to in time of war I. E ww1 and ww2 can contain way more than the normal amount of battalions not as overboard in ww2 compared to the great war for example the Hampshire regiment during the first world war had I think it was 32 battalions and numbered in strange ways.
In the case of british military formations I'm happy to help with any research into the subject.

+jake brown thank you, do you know any books/resources that include a complete "table of organization and equipment" (I think that is the US Army term)? My main problem is that a lot of books usually contain just a bit of information, e.g., Jentz covered all about tanks in every unit and subunit but I didn't waste one line about how many men there were in those units. Other mention: 12k men in the division, but no information on how many men in each division.

causalities are quite problematic even for World War 2, because every country uses different counting methods (as far as I know), e.g., some count sick people, also some died from sickness. Also it really depends on how often one side was defending. Usually the defender gets a "kill bonus". So I assume that the Allies were attacking a bit more often.
This stuff is gold for anyone trying to organize wargaming units!

As far as I know they weren't used mixed, the had complete regiments of Czech Tanks, although maybe the light tanks were composed Pz I & Pz II, but the medium Czech tanks. At least from what I remember, this would also make sense from a logistical point, because having Pz IIIs, Pz IVs and Pz 35 & Pz 38 (t) must be a logistical nightmare. Yeah, maybe I will make a comparison video. good idea!

The video left out a major component of the 1939/1940 panzer division, namely the Czech 35(t) and 38(t). The 38(t) in particular was pretty close to the effectiveness of an early Panzer III. Rommel's Ghost Division in the invasion of France was composed mostly of Czech tanks, and he did pretty well with them.

You didn't mention Pz 35(t) and Pz 38 (t). What was their role in reality? Replacements for Pz II and Pz III respectively?

When Germany overran Czechoslovakia prior to ww2, they captured a large number of czech built pz-35 tanks and the factory newly retooled to produce the improved pz-38 model. These were used to pad out numbers in several early war campaigns. The Pz-38s were similar to pz-II but better armed. Some divisions used in France had pz-38s as over half their tank strength.
Actually, the Pz 38t is very similar to the Pz III E and F in armor and armament.
Numbers of Trucks and Halftracks in the division?
During the WW2, the german tank divisions were multiple times pushing deep into the enemy territory with the rest of the army lagging behind. I would be curious how were these divisions supplied with fuel, food, ammunition during these frontline stretchings. I would greatly appreciate a video about this.

I'm quite confused often at how much amount of gear it actually has and I would love to have a video to clear things up. If that is not exactly ''historic'', could you do to more modern, cold war divisions instead of modern brigade structure? If not, could you at least link me to good sources which would give me this information for further analysis?
at one point I will cover more modern divisions, but no guarantee for 2016, although quite likely.

not really on my list, maybe at some point, but unlikely.
The reason why Germans cut numbers of tanks of panzer division later was that panzer division need a lot more infantry support. Panzers making break trough wasn't the biggest issue. The biggest problem was how to get infantry following with large numbers those armor penetrations. Finns noticed during Winter War that its better to let tanks go through because alone separated from their infantry support they were relatively easy targets for anti tank crews.

+marshja56 yeah, each regiment had a repair company and each battalion a support column. Each company also a maintenance section and supply section, etc. etc. I know for Russian rifle division that most supply units were external, whereas German Infantry Division had them included. Note: the above list is probably not complete.
I'm not sure whether I just missed it, but how many soldiers were part of the 1st Panzer division on average and what roles did they have?

324 tanks in the brigade are equal to 1545 men. If I assume that a crew per tank are 5 men, (which is not the case). What exactly are doing the others 1455 men approx in the "Tank brigade"?

This one's pretty inetresting to me. I learned the word '(der) Befehl' from those parodies of the movie Der Untergang, long before I actually began learning German systematically.
Befehlswagen is the german term of an commanding tank.

Kind of, you can make exactly this in HoI3 and you can kind of get somewhere close to what you can pretend is a rough representation of the idea of this in HoI4. XD
i often play HoI3 as Germany and try to keep as close to historical precedents as possible.
except i don''t waste time on Bizmarck nor Tirpitz. i build a fleet of u-boats with a decent medium range for atlantic commerse raiding
But there is a bug in HoI3 that makes the USSR invincible. Although they have a phenomenal manpower output annually, the game seems to increase that figure exponentially.
I followed Mannstein's plan for the Ardennes by moving the 11 Pz Divs into their operational positions the day after the attack against Holland. Once the Allies have moved up to the Dyle Line i let loose my Panzers and , tbh? i had no idea just how difficult it was for Guderian and his fellow Pz COs to rely on their engineer and Motorised Inf. Divs to support them to get over the bridges for the final breakout.
I also noticed that large numbers of Me109s and He111s suffered quite a few losses though the German Luftwaffe had enormous resources to rely upon and many aircraft and pilots were mostly damaged and out of action for several months. It seems the open cockpit of the standard French fighter did an amazing job of handling Stukas and bombers though suffered greatly against a vastly superior Me109 force. To think the French were still using open cockpit fighters in 1940 is quite astonishing.
I also noticed that after i gave up ALL my technological and doctrinal plans to Italy - i gave them everything Germany had advances in - that Italy easily marched into Greece and controlled the east coastline that runs parallel to the Italian eastern coastline.
In summary, i simply treated Germany and Italy [ and later, Japan, ] in the same way that the USA and UK and Commonwealth in the same way in that they shared almost all information w each other, eg, the Mustang or P38 Lightning might never have appeared if not for the combined efforts of their airforce development teams.
I am looking forward to playing HoI4 as i believe there is counter intelligence/sabotage/spies etc, which should seriously have been incorporated in the earlier HoI series.

Narred Darr This notice may come a bit too late to you, but HOI 4 eliminates the intelligence panels from HOI 3 completely. They also destroyed the trade system. I am disappointed in HOI 4 except for aces, graphics, and elimination of HQs.
JVT_RedBaron speaks intelligence is still in research, so it’s somewhat there. Trade has been completely overhauled though

+Hōtarō Oreki beides, also Hearts of Iron hat sie von der NATO, allerdings ist mein Design defacto ne Kopie vom Black Ice Design, Black Ice ist ein HOI3 mod.

+Hōtarō Oreki gern geschehen, danke, fleißig teilen und liken hilft. UA-cam is dazu übergegangen meine letzten beiden videos automatisch für Monetarisierung zu sperren :( wenn das so weiter geht werd ich den Channel wohl schmeißen.

das Problem ist 1) es gibt keinen google support für normale Channels, erst ab 900.000 mins / 90 days watch time gibts nen eigenen Contact Button. 2) Google hat ne policy, dass man nur auf "advertiser friendly"-content videos Werbung schalten kann. Die guidelines sind absolut vage, aber generell ist mal Krieg dabei. Natürlich sind Kriegsspiele und alles andere ausgenommen (oder es liegt daran, dass die Channels groß genug sind). 3) Das System wird vermutlich ständig angepasst, zumindest würde das Erklären wieso mein erstes Video ca. 10 mal den Status gewechselt. 4) Das System ist von einem absoluten Drecks****** designed worden, weil es gibt NULL absolut keine Information bzgl. wieso es gemacht wird oder nicht. 5) Ich kann nachvollziehen wieso gewisse Videos nicht "ok" sind, allerdings ist auch mein Staff Briefing geflagged worden, wo ich NICHT über Krieg, Gewalt oder sonstwas problematisches spreche. Ebenso meine 2 test videos heute, die einfach 20 Sekunden lang waren.
Es ist einfach total frustrierend 20 Stunden an einem Video zu arbeiten und dann einfach mitzukriegen, dass es deaktiviert wird, ohne Angabe von Gründen und in einer Welt wo Milliarden für Waffen und Krieg aus dem Fenster geschmiessen werden, aber wehe man spricht drüber. NEIN.
