I think the hate for MK4 comes mostly from people who weren't around when it was released. The 3D models weren't an issue. Everyone was tired of 2D graphics back then, so it was well received at first. The problem people noticed right away was the final boss Shinnok being just a regular character. But I think what really killed the game was Tekken 3. It absolutely crushed all other fighting games.
I actually don't mind MK4 at all, especially since it's a very enjoyable game if you want to play through it by yourself. Because compared to how absolutely absurd AI was in MK3 before this, MK4's AI is very reasonable and not mind-reading (mostly). This is also why I come back to MK4 way more often if I'm playing singleplayer.
I love MK4 on PS1. I 1st played it in Arcades and sucked at it due to the changes of special moves but then I bought it on a band trip in Nashville TN at a mall for PS1. I played it at home and fell in love with it. I still have this and MK Gold on Dreamcast but I have the red disc with no glitches. I want a Arcade 1up or regular arcade cab of this. It became my go to in Arcades for yrs after I got the home console copy.
7:53 I swear Liu is saying “Nelson Mandela”. I love MK4 but I did not really care for the PlayStation version lol. Any version that had to load really annoyed me.
Omg!!! Darryl! You have got to do a playthrough of bust a groove for me!!! Man! That’s one game that i played the hell out of it! That kitty-n song always takes me back and i listen to it every now and then! 😂
Hey you were a fan of that one also? I had part 1 and 2 and the songs stuck in my head forever lol That Kitty-N song was one of my favorites in this one also. I just might show this in a video soon 🙏🏽 thanks Xaf!
In my Gamepro 1997 issue there is an interview with Mortal kombat lead programmers talking about the arcade release of mortal kombat 4 and it was said september 11 1997 mortal kombat 4 would hit arcades
I don't hate MK4 but it was a disappointment! Tbh, as far as i'm concerned, after MK Trilogy, and In hindsight, i really wouldn't care if they had never made another MK game, to me the Digitised graphics was part of what Mortal Kombat was, without them it wasn't the same!
I think the biggest issue was how it looked. Would you believe this was a game from 1997? Take a look at VF3 from 1996 and you'll see a huge difference in polygon count. No home console would even dare try to port it until the Dreamcast 2 full years later.
I loved Bust A Groove, my favourite opponent on that were the twin aliens doing Capoeira I thought that stage and character was incredible! I appreciate the comment my friend 👊🏼
I had this game back in the early 2000s and spent a lot of time playing it on my PS1. I had a blast with it because of it's fast pace, and the gibberish and grunts from the characters always made me laugh. Furthermore, I loved being able to create your own dial-a-kombos, and it was the first MK game to have working difficulty settings. As for Raiden’s new torpedo command, I think it was changed to help with combos since you could link a standing close HP or HK into a special move in your dial-a-kombo. The camera angles in MKG for the Sega Dreamcast are worst, there were so many issues with the game overall. I owned both the yellow and red discs, the yellow one was the glitchiest, almost like playing a buggy MK MUGEN game, even though I hadn’t discovered MUGEN till 2010.
I would like to make a request if it's alright, I'd like to see some Cyborg Smoke gameplay, he was always my favorite character in the MK3 era of games. Great video as always and a your channel is great as well. Happy Holidays!
Thanks for the comment Bizarro and ya know what I’d love to show off some Robo Smoke in another video, he’s a great character and I think he’s been hated on too much for being “cheap” but I don’t see it that way. Will do 👊🏼 which game did you have in mind?
Yoooo bust a groove in the background of the intro got me grinning hard, the kitty N song still goes hard! Oh man really takes me back seeing that one!
I had mk gold for the Dreamcast and thought it was alright, I liked how when you changed character as shinok his appearance stayed the same so if you had loud music playing it would surprise your opponents 😊
Though I like MK4 and MK Gold, I never really had the excitement to return to those like I did the earlier ones. For some reason the gameplay just wasn't as fun as the 2D ones even though MK4 does kinda still play like those. Also they made Noob Saibot as a hidden character again and by this point it's getting old seeing him as a hidden character since he was already playable from the previous games. A majority of the new characters were also not that interesting since they are just replacement characters such as Shinnok who replace Shang Tsung, Tanya who replace Kitana, Jarek who replace Kano, Reiko who replaced Ermac, and Kai who replaced Kung Lao.
Kai for Kung Lao was a terrible decision I think Kai is one of the worst characters in MK history. I hear what you’re saying in regards to Noob, I appreciate the comment! 👊🏼
This was my favourite alongside MKT, because 1) of the 3D aspect of environment and movements, 2) the phenomenal and dynamic representation of Raiden who became the best character for me 3) for the live intro/outros of the characters and 4) the gruesome fatalities and the crazy voices/sound effects it had. I agree on the downsides you mentioned such as the obvious polygonal appearance and the underwhelming final boss (Shinnok). For me, though, it was part of my childhood, more so than MKT.
I always thought MK4 was an evolution to the combat system of MK2. Its obviously a step down from MK3 but feels like a little more advanced to MK2. If you get where I'm coming from with this.
I have rather sad memories on this game. I got it for the PC, but it would have very glitchy graphics, I worked on my PC for hours until I realized that it was my graphics card start failing😢

The best thing about this game is the music. It brought back the eerie atmosphere and sense of dread of MK2 to the series, it had been lost on MK3/UMK3, which was a more cartoonish game imo.
I think the music in this is decent, there’s one track I can’t stand though and it’s the tune I hear most from this version lol oh well. Thanks for the comment dude 👊🏼
Even though we have next MK1 next gen , I can be very honest and say MK1 and MK2 Arcade is still the best MKS compared to all of them. MK1 in 1992 Scared me when I seen Kano rip out the heart for the first time. MK2 I spent so many quarters and money in my local pizza shop. MK3 I hated it , I only played MK4 on N64 it was okay for the first 3D MK but MK1 1992 I can play all day now in 2024 and still only beat the game with SUB and Scorpion. IF only we can get the Sprites in HD without needing a CRT. MK1 sounds are just amazing with a great speaker setup. I swear MK1 pit was a longer drop.
MK4 was ok, i guess. Had MK Gold on the SEGA Dreamcast but on the other hand i also had Virtua Fighter 3tb, SoulCalibur and Dead or Alive 2. These games look and played way better in comparison.
I waited all morning at Kaybee at the mall for their shipment to come in on release that fine hot summer day. Funcoland next door already had it, but I was 14 at the time, and wouldn’t sell it to me. But alas, KB came through later on. And I really enjoyed my summer vacation with it. N64 Version.
I like the story dude thank you for sharing it, I liked “fine hot summer day” it’s like you’re able to replay the whole thing in your mind 😊 thanks for the comment 👊🏼
as a kid, I remember when I first found out mk was switchin to 3D.. i avoided that cab in the arcades like the plague. and to this day, still dont really care for it🤷🏽♂️
Not really, not anymore anyways, I was into them back when they came out though, I played every version of MK quite regularly, but the classics are the ones I’ve always ended up going back to. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
Still one of my favourites after the classic trilogy 🥲 Especially the PSX version. The Dreamcast one was too broken with lazily made fatalities and animations from the added characters. Wish they would give us the arcade port one day.
I think MK4 is a solid game,my favourite version is on the N64 which I own a copy a copy of that I bought second hand.I remember seeing it in the arcades at the movie theatre back in the early 2000s and I always wanted to play it..my favourite character in the game is Fujin!
MK 4 was fun for me. The Dreamcast version was great. I spend a lot of time originally with the N64 version. I thought this game was pretty fun, I have some fond memories with it. MK 1- trilogy were the kings though.
I understood the hate then and now, but I didn't think it was as horrible as many say it is. The transition to 3D was rough and it didn't affect the gameplay much, if at all, but it was still playable. I would've rather had a more challenging final boss than Shinnok. If anything, buff him like they did Bison in SFA3.
Thanks for the comment Ricky, I would’ve definitely liked a different end boss, the fact that he was playable made him less menacing and he was definitely no Shao Kahn. They should’ve at least buffed Shinnok I agree. Thanks again 👊🏼
Had this game on N64 back in the day. If I remember right, the polygon count was higher, but the textures weren't as good. I definitely had fun with it, but it didn't hit like MK 1-3. I was disappointed the characters were made out of polygons, as it just changes the feel of a "real" person getting their head ripped off. But developers felt pressured to make their games 3d. It at least was pushing graphics in the arcade back in the day, whereas the PS2 era MK games had crap graphics in my opinion.
I love Mortal Kombat 4 me and my dad evolved with Mortal Kombat the folks at Midway thought that digitized graphics weren't the wave of the future anymore 3D polygonal was at the time with PlayStation the Nintendo 64 had a tough time with early polygonal 3D and every new system after the PS1 I'm not counting the Sega Saturn has polygons in it including PS5 has polygons in it as well
MK4 is a solid game: - 60fps on N64! that's an incredible feat! - the game plays really smooth, the input system is probably one of the best in the entire franchise. - together with MK3 for SNES, MK4 is the fastest MK to date. - it is really violent, it went back to its roots in this aspect, MK3's fatalities were less serious and more of a parody, MK4 was miles ahead. Just watch Reptile's 'Hannibal' fatality and Quan Chi's 'Leg' fatality, disturbing stuff really. - best 'continue' screen in an MK game - the ending cinematics were outstanding (on ps1 and pc) Just fixing the combo system would make this game shine. The bad stuff: the combo system is broken, I don't like Shinnok, and in terms of story I didn't like the retcon of Quan Chi, Scorpion and Sub-Zero (you know the drill). Another thing: I don't like the sounds, as I said before, the game went back to its roots in terms of graphic violence, but the sounds do not match that direction, this game would be much better with a darker set of sounds. edit: only formatting
They didn't retcon Quan Chi, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero, that's how they originally were going against each other. Quan Chi was the one who murder Scorpion's family and the younger Sub-Zero just found out it was Quan Chi, not only that he also found out his brother was frame for their death too. Scorpion's ending with Quan Chi make sense cause it lead directly to Deadly Alliance.
@@VOAN Originally the idea that Tobias had was to just make them sworn enemies for belonging to different ninja clans, one from China, the other one from Japan. In Scorpion's ending in the first MK, it said the following: 'Marked for death years ago by the Lin Kuei, Scorpion was murdered by Sub-Zero. He left behind a wife and child in his former life but was allowed to return and avenge his death.' His wife and child were alive. It was only him (Scorpion) that was murdered by Sub-Zero. And of course it was Sub-Zero the one who killed Scorpion, until MK4. If you don't want to call it retcon it is fine for me, what I'm pointing out is that there was a deliberate change in the context of the story which invalidates and even contradicts the story of previous games.
MK4 was cool for the time it was released. We loved it at first but over time we saw it as a gameplay downgrade to MK Trilogy in the same console. We always went back to either MK Trilogy or UMK3. We missed the characters: Kitana, Kung Lao, Smoke, Nightwolf... MK Gold arrived 2 years later, a little too late. I always thought MK Gold should have been developed by the MK Devs and not Eurocom, also no release on PS1? By the time MK Gold came around, people already moved on and the quality of the characters and gameplay did not help either. Compared to its competitors, Tekken 3 and Street Fighter EX 2 Plus, MK4 overall fell short.
I played all the MK games except 11, the handheld versions and this one. Just like Darly I also enjoyed the digitized graphics, even though I was around 8 or 10 when this came out lol
I remember this game disappointing me as a kid even though I was extremely excited because it was MK in 3D at long last. I tried it some years ago to see if I was wrong, and nope. It sucks as much now as it did back then. It's just a shittier version of UMK3 with hideous graphics and animations. Then there's that Game Boy Color version of MK4. I think if I got that game as a gift I'd runaway from home.
It's also worst cause of the lack of buttons, with only six buttons doing side-step on that version was difficult to do whereas on N64 and PS1 you could easily do it with just press one of the shoulder buttons.
Did you feel the N64 Version was better? I’m gonna have to check it out once more, I think I liked the PS version better but it may have just been because of the cuts scenes. Thank you for the comment 👊🏼
I really liked MK4. The OST was awesome. Also the PS1 version was the best. Especially since it had the TV spot and Raiden’s creed was full CGI, as well as all the endings were full CGI and not trash
owned the psx version of mk4 rented it and somehow ended up keeping it forever , idk lol. but i wasnt in love with it but i had a few friends who loved mk2 and 3 but hated mk4
100 comments and 5-6 hours old. you're on fire my friend. :D I play mk4 on my dreamcast from time to time. tbh, it's NOT THAT BAD. but i'm with you... it's not that best to go back to. I think you can connect this comment back to what I was saying about trilogy. trilogy came out in a time where people were pushing 3d so hard and it was the new and next best thing. mk4 went that 3d route, and after so many complaints about "2d being outdated" - here we are the 3d kinda felt like a flop. so you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. my take out of this is. play more mortal kombat LOL
Thanks man, I wish I could get to all the comments.. anyways, yeah MK Gold is more fun to play over this version I find as well. And 3D was getting pushed hard so I understood why they switched over I just wished they hadn’t. When they returned in MK9 with the old school feel I was so excited but again it never captured my attention like the originals. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of them lol thanks for the comment my friend I appreciate it 👊🏼
They lost me at 3d :( Oh yeah I loved Virtua Fighter just because it was the first of it's kind and the moves were pretty fun. They just announced a new Virtua Fighter after 13 years. But yeah loved Tekken even more.
I played this game, it was very fun as a kid, but nowadays and without the need to replay, I feel like the jank would do me in. MK Trilogy (the first MK I ever played) would be a much better fit for me.
I remmber when this came out this was the phase I started losing interest in the series. But maybe there might be something I dont see in it that others like it.
i never had a playstation 1 back then so i don’t remember mk4, i have played mk4 n64 version in october this year. i didn’t really like it, think it was the first 3D style mortal kombat with camera views 😅
Don’t be sorry I enjoyed it also back in the day more so, I still like it but I prefer the Dreamcast version and definitely the arcade version over this port.
I have done a few videos on that actually including an MK3 comparison video of the cartridge and emulated game on there. But I don’t think I touched on MK and MK2 so I could definitely revisit them. Thanks for the suggestion my friend 👊🏼
MK4 was fun at the time because it was the only mortal kombat that was user friendly. All the previous games were too hard, but MK4 was easy to master.
Hello, I love your videos, it would be very entertaining to see you react to Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, a game that made me suffer when I was a teenager XD, greetings from Santiago de Chile!
I appreciate the comment. I’ve actually play through Mythologies in chapter videos where I’ll play through a level at a time as I found this game extremely hard. The conclusion video is coming out on the 24th and I tell ya, it’s not pretty lol thanks again for the kind comment I appreciate you 👊🏼
The mortal Kombat 4 was okay Im just not fan of it because I really don't play it the character was pretty okay I just think I don't play hardly because for me I wish it had more mortal Kombat character to it like the best character and also some of the characters I like are awesome but the other characters I just don't know about it in mortal Kombat 4 btw your rock darryl keep up the good work 😄😄
Thanks for the comment Starlight, yeah this one was tough to like right off the hop because of the style of it as well as the characters, I never cared for Kai for instance even to this day, very underwhelming. I did like the addition of a few more characters on the Dreamcast but still, not one of my go-to’s when it comes to MK. I appreciate you 😉
I feel like this was the jump the shark point for the series. This game is clearly inferior to Tekken and some of the other 3D fighters that were out at the time and it just seemed like the series had to spend years reestablishing itself after this one. On the plus side, it is a fairly fast paced fighting game for those that prefer that approach, and it laid the ground work for future MK stories.
Hey bushy i enjoy your vids i always watch Them but never comment them cause i sometimes get nervous even when typing i have a viewer request can you do a super street fighter on sega genesis with any character you perfer i saw your vid on ssf on snes which was cool but i played the genesis version as a kid so i hope you can do one anyway love your vids :)
Hey Mike, thanks for the comment, I understand sometimes I watch vids and don’t comment all the time lol nothing to be nervous of though my friend I’m just glad I saw this comment and I’m able to respond! Super Street Fighter 2 on Genesis, I can definitely do it, BUT I’ll have to find a copy or order one online before I can do this as I don’t own that one. Stay tuned though I’ll hop on eBay right now for ya. Thanks for the comment and support of the channel dude I very much appreciate it! Have a great day 👊🏼

That would be a cool experience! Thanks for the kindness my friend 👊🏼

So many memories with this game. The sound that plays when you pick up or use a object or weapon sounds like that one "I Got the Power" song to me. 😆

Agreed 1000000!!!
the skin textures are scanner from real actors like kerry hoskins for sonya (only mk4)
Highly Agree
I totally ageee
i got this game for 10 dollars at target back in the day on pc
This brings back great memories!! Great video as always brotha! The sound effects definately bring back some crazy memories lol 😂
Thanks for the comment Taylor 👊🏼 the sound effects are the best part of this game in my opinion lol
@BushyStallion and you commentating on them is the cherry on top!! 😂
Shoutout to the Bust-A-Groove on the screen in the beginning of the clip! Loved 1 and 2 growing up. Good taste in gaming, man!
I loved Bust A Groove, my favourite opponent on that were the twin aliens doing Capoeira I thought that stage and character was incredible! I appreciate the comment my friend 👊🏼
Bust a Groove in the back! I grew up with both 1 and 2 and then moved on to Dance Dance Revolution!

I had this for the ps1, I was under 18 so my dad had to buy it for me. I think the guy in Dixons knew it was for me, though 😂

Not really, not anymore anyways, I was into them back when they came out though, I played every version of MK quite regularly, but the classics are the ones I’ve always ended up going back to. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
The growing pains of transitioning from a 2D to a 3D art style was pretty rough around that time period and games like MK4 didn’t age well.
I love mk4 &mk2 that my favorite ones
I repeat They're combo goes high punch high punch high kick upper cut😊
Had this game on N64 back in the day. If I remember right, the polygon count was higher, but the textures weren't as good. I definitely had fun with it, but it didn't hit like MK 1-3. I was disappointed the characters were made out of polygons, as it just changes the feel of a "real" person getting their head ripped off. But developers felt pressured to make their games 3d. It at least was pushing graphics in the arcade back in the day, whereas the PS2 era MK games had crap graphics in my opinion.
I love Mortal Kombat 4 me and my dad evolved with Mortal Kombat the folks at Midway thought that digitized graphics weren't the wave of the future anymore 3D polygonal was at the time with PlayStation the Nintendo 64 had a tough time with early polygonal 3D and every new system after the PS1 I'm not counting the Sega Saturn has polygons in it including PS5 has polygons in it as well
Try killer instinct on N64 as my request
Do some obscure fighting games .
Like fighting vipers or pit fighter.
Please
Sir, this is a Mortal Kombat channel.
MK4 is a solid game:
- 60fps on N64! that's an incredible feat!
- best 'continue' screen in an MK game
- the ending cinematics were outstanding (on ps1 and pc)
Just fixing the combo system would make this game shine.
The bad stuff:
the combo system is broken, I don't like Shinnok, and in terms of story I didn't like the retcon of Quan Chi, Scorpion and Sub-Zero (you know the drill).
In Scorpion's ending in the first MK, it said the following:
'Marked for death years ago by the Lin Kuei, Scorpion was murdered by Sub-Zero. He left behind a wife and child in his former life but was allowed to return and avenge his death.'
His wife and child were alive.
It was only him (Scorpion) that was murdered by Sub-Zero.
And of course it was Sub-Zero the one who killed Scorpion, until MK4.
If you don't want to call it retcon it is fine for me, what I'm pointing out is that there was a deliberate change in the context of the story which invalidates and even contradicts the story of previous games.
greetings from Poland ✌🏻
Good morning Gandalf from Poland! I appreciate the comment, from Canada 👊🏼
11 was very good also for modern MK, thanks for the comment 👊🏼
*I never liked MK4.* It was a very rough first attempt at making the series 3D.
Mk 4 i do like even back then..i like the Nintendo 64 port is my favorite port of tha 2 N64 vs PS1
Why better port
I’m keen to know how you’re capturing CRT footage so cleanly?
iPhone 12, film at 30FPS that seems to work wonders 👊🏼
Dreamcast Gold version is the best mk 4 port
It's also worst cause of the lack of buttons, with only six buttons doing side-step on that version was difficult to do whereas on N64 and PS1 you could easily do it with just press one of the shoulder buttons.
One of the few cross platform releases that actually was way better on the N64.
Did you feel the N64 Version was better? I’m gonna have to check it out once more, I think I liked the PS version better but it may have just been because of the cuts scenes. Thank you for the comment 👊🏼
They all have the same combos it goes High punch high punch High kick down upper cut😊
Basically it's a fore hit combo😊
I really liked MK4. The OST was awesome. Also the PS1 version was the best. Especially since it had the TV spot and Raiden’s creed was full CGI, as well as all the endings were full CGI and not trash
owned the psx version of mk4 rented it and somehow ended up keeping it forever , idk lol. but i wasnt in love with it but i had a few friends who loved mk2 and 3 but hated mk4
I adore MK4.
100 comments and 5-6 hours old. you're on fire my friend. :D
I play mk4 on my dreamcast from time to time. tbh, it's NOT THAT BAD. but i'm with you... it's not that best to go back to.
I couldn't agree more. IMO all the early 3D fighting games haven't aged very well. Well, Tekken 3 might be an exception. 😅
But yeah loved Tekken even more.
after Trilogy this was such a downgrade i rememner 14 year old me was disgusted i wanted to throw the disc out.
What do you think of Armageddon? Its my favorite mortal kombat, i love the 3d era mortal Kombat games
It’s a fun game
I played this game, it was very fun as a kid, but nowadays and without the need to replay, I feel like the jank would do me in. MK Trilogy (the first MK I ever played) would be a much better fit for me.
It wasn't my favorite, however...it did setup the PS2 trilogy with Deception being my favorite because of that amazing AMAZING, Konquest mode.
I first played mortal kombat 4 in early 1998 at a arcade in utah calles nickel kade the arcades cost 5 cents to play
I remmber when this came out this was the phase I started losing interest in the series. But maybe there might be something I dont see in it that others like it.
This was still classic MK but in 3D. All the other games that came after were different.
@@Oni64 I can see that.
i never had a playstation 1 back then so i don’t remember mk4, i have played mk4 n64 version in october this year. i didn’t really like it, think it was the first 3D style mortal kombat with camera views 😅
did you do the mk trilogy or shaolin monks
HOOOIMGONNATHROWYOUOVERTHERE
I love saying it lol thanks Jon 👊🏼
I do like mortal kombat 4 disc cover art for ps1
Sorry. But I thoroughly enjoyed MK4. It's fun!!!!
Don’t be sorry I enjoyed it also back in the day more so, I still like it but I prefer the Dreamcast version and definitely the arcade version over this port.
What did you play during the Saturn era? Tekken 3 is great but considerably later.
Pretty sure I was still playing SNES and Sega CD at this point. I’d have to look up the years to know exactly.
I was happy they tried 3d but after they showed they could I wanted them to go back to 2d.
You should do the @Games ( 3rd party sega handheld device ) version of Mortal Kombat 1-3
The conclusion video is coming out on the 24th and I tell ya, it’s not pretty lol thanks again for the kind comment I appreciate you 👊🏼
quan chi definitely has the best fatality in this lol
If only I could’ve got one to work in this play through lol 👊🏼
I prefer the N64 version over the PS1 of MK4.
On the plus side, it is a fairly fast paced fighting game for those that prefer that approach, and it laid the ground work for future MK stories.
has a surprising good framerate
Have a great day 👊🏼
Play Virtua Fighter from Virtua Fighter 2 onwards and you'll see a really great game.
