We got super lucky to capture this footage as most guinea pig mamas have their babies when no one is around. The total count of babies was actually 6 but sadly one of the wee ones was stillborn.

I think guinea pigs are one of the few rodents that are born as independent as they are. Eyes and ears opened, all their teeth, and able to walk right off the bat. Capybaras too.

This was a wonderful reminder of my own Guinea pigs, especially of my Guinea pig named Titania and her newborns! They were only five days old as I had to go to Houston from Germany and they had to fly with me and the other Guinea pigs and a dwarf bunny in the First Class with Lufthansa in their pet carrier box and during the flight to Houston the captain of this Boeing 747-230 asked me to bring these two fife days old baby Guinea pigs into the cockpit to see them and to cuddle with them! At this day they had no names and I decided to call them from now on Lufthansa and Boeing 747! So the captain, the first officer and the flight engineer and I had christening them in the cockpit of this Boeing 747-230! I loved it and these two Guinea pigs got a wonderful sight over the ocean in the altitude of 39 000 ft above the ocean and they were squeaking and gave the cockpit their little poo to say hi - we were here for a wonderful sightseeing here in this cockpit! This was one of the most beautiful moments ever in my entire life and the cockpit crew had an amazing time with them and the service from Lufthansa was simply amazing, because they got a wonderful big bowl of porcelain with a wonderful mixture of salad, tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, carrots and many other things more to eat in the First Class inside of this wonderful and so majestic Boeing 747-230! This flight was so fantastic and I will never ever forget it, never ever! Eating the placenta also gives the mother back some strength after a tiring labor, and helps her produce more milk as a result.

They're one of the most affectionate, loving, beautiful animals I have ever seen, each so, so different, but everyone of them are so extremely important and unique! i never knew they were born that big. i thought they would look hairless and tiny, like baby mice
guinea pigs give birth to almost fully developed young. the babies start sampling solid food within a few days of birth, though they still drink milk for a few weeks. they look like mini adults from just a few hours old, ignoring the clumsiness of course. the tricky part is that the babies reach sexual maturity at around 1000 grams, which is still during the key social development period. that makes for a lot of badly socialized male guinea pigs who fail at getting along well with others of their kind.
awe how precious. I love guineas. I had one have babies when I was a child but I did not notice her taking care of the blood. What a good Momma guinea!!

I miss my guinea pigs. Had them growing up. In the winter, mom let me keep them in a connected train of alfalfa (from our farm)-filled boxes, sitting on newspapers in the kitchen. Every morning I would be welcomed by the lettuce squeals, and each night by the guinea pig hopping line dance. Such loving little beings..A great childhood memory!

This is fascinating. My pig, Mama aka Alfonzo, left one of her placentas. She also rumblestrutted and ran away from the babies at EXACTLY two weeks. She was dooooone with them! Her sister, Ziggy, made an excellent sitter and terrific Auntie.

My daughter noticed ours was acting funny one day so picked her up. But quickly noticed first baby was on its way out. 2 more followed quickly. Missed no 2 looking for something to hold camera and saw number 3 been born. Good welcome home from work as i walked in back door.

They eat it to keep predators from finding her and babies, it’s nature’s way. It also helps the mother’s milk come in for nursing. It’s amazing that such a small creature has such big babies.

Wow! Theyre bigger than I expected, relative to her. That must be a relief! Very interesting about hiding blood from predators too. Since they were born there that must make them naturalized citizens of LAGPR.
Seriously though, thanks for sharing. Ive never seen this and hopefully never will, given the surplus of these little animals... last thing I would want to do is contribute to the overpopulation. But it is a magical and lovely moment.
