The only time my piggies ever bit me is when I’m feeding them . 😂😂😂they always think my finger is food .

I've had that happen on occasion, usually when I feed them berries, you're fingertip is round and plump like a nice tasty blueberry and probably has berry juice on it. Can't blame them

THIS is the video that was missing from the Internet. There's a lot of conflicting advice out there and almost none on how to deal with a new unsocialized piggy. Our babies are 8 weeks old, we've had them 2 weeks and haven't been able to pick them up . We ended up having to catch them in a towel just so we could clean the cage. Thank you Saskia, it's great to see how the expert does it.

Tim Long I’ve had my two piggies for over a year and they let me pet their heads a little, but run and chitter if I try touching them in any other way. This video seems to be what I’ve been looking for so hopefully this helps me out!

Yes! Same here, i somehow just winged it with my piggy but i research a lotttt & could not find a good answer! Ive watched a few of her videos and she seems to be the only straight forward Guinea Pig educator. I always make the joke that I’m going to start a movement for the lack of representation, resources & supplies in the small pet community. Lol no, but seriously...is it just me??

When one of my piggies is waiting for her dinner, all I have to do is put my hand on the floor palm up and she will jump on to it so I just lift her, lol she is adorable. She only does this when she is hungry tho, once I gave her dinner she will run if I want to pick her up. She is so used to me, she is turning 6 later this month I love my piggies so much.

Mine will only do that after we put them in our mobile potty box. When doing lap time, about every 20 min (sooner if they give the signals) we put them in the potty box and tell them to go potty. We wait for them to finish pooping and peeing then put our hands back in and ask if they are done, or if they want to go back to the cage. They will climb onto our hands for us to take them out of the potty box (a plastic tote box with guinea big paper bedding in it).

    • @iDaleesaDoHair
      @iDaleesaDoHair 3 роки тому +3

@@j_fizzle Thanks for asking. Trial & Error mixed with consistency. When they were younger we were always getting peed and pooped on, lol. (gotta love lap pads) I just started putting them in the box and talking to them in my 'piggie voice' lol saying/asking things like "does Elle have to go potty?" "go potty!" etc. I'd wait until after they go THEN pick them up and hold them for awhile. Starting out holding them for shorter periods and putting them back in the potty pox. I also would say things like "good job" or "yeah" after they go in the potty box before I pick them back up. It's very rare they pee or poop on us now. But I always put them in the potty box first to give them a chance to go before I hold them. Then keep an eye on time and any signs they have to go (wiggling, bitting, trying to get away, being vocal....specific signs that you will learn to recognize over time). We have 3 pigs. Each of them are different. One of them has a weaker bladder and has to go more often. Best wishes. Hope this was helpful!

Thank you for re sharing this video! Harriet still doesn't like to be picked up, though once i have her, she's fine. Since i have weak muscles on my right side, I have learned to adapt a safe way to pick her up. I use her cozy cup and she goes in there and i also get her when she is in her hidey hut . I use my left hand. I always bring her from her home to the room in her cozy cup. She loves it and feels safe!

Basically, Guinea pigs will always hate being picked up, but, Saskia technique is so effective, that it makes the guinea a little less scared. It's like when you see a big doggo for the 50th time, and you know that doggo. But it always runs up to you, and you instinctively get scared for a moment, but then decide not to run or just run a little then stop, realizing that there is no reason to run. The doggo is nice. This is what guinea pigs feel once they start getting used to you. It's very nice to see.

This is actually really useful for me.. i am currently studying animal care and we have 3 guinea pigs at the care location and they are all pretty skittish.. there is one that is alone wich i’ve not had any issues with myself as she usually hides under the bedding so i can easily scoop her up because she will stay there and feels safe under the bedding.. the other two however are super duper skittish.. so the explanation of how to grab them the best really cleared stuff up.. (i did already hold them the way you did but i grew up around animals and am used to holding animals that way as for me it’s the easiest way to hold them.. and the most stable aswell.. )

Great instructions!! Its about helping the pig feel secure. What about using a towel? I use a towel or cuddle cup when holding pigs. Then I wrap the towel or close the sides of the cup around pig and put the pig back in cage letting the pig walk out of the towel/cup. I continue to hold it until they have completely walked out making sure no feet are caught in towel.

One of my guinea pigs is easy to pick up. Her I can pick up with one hand and she will stay still. When on the floor she comes to me and puts her front paws on my hand and then I scoop up her but.
My other guinea pig doesn't like to be picked up. In the cage I can pick her up using two hands. But when she is on the floor I use a different method. I trained her to go into a fleece house. Then I pick up the house and carry her to the cage. She now nows to stay still untill I tell her to come out.
So if your guinea pig really hates to be picked up, train them to go into something. That way you can avoid a lot of stress.

Thanks for your video I've found this really helpful. I have recently just bought 2 males and it's day 4. I've read listened asked questions and so on......i found there's been lots of what i felt like conflicting information. I say this because I've been slowly introducing my piggys and some say don't grab if they run....but I've kept a rouitne if sliding my hand in from the side and pat them before I pick them up so they know I'm not going to grab them.
Its interesting it's like holding a baby, that's how I see it anyway. I have also introduced the cuddle sacks so when my kids hold them it's a bit easier. Love you video thankyou again. ❤❤🙂🥰🥰

Before seeing this video I've always done a similar technique. Mine is placing a hand in front which gets my piggies to pause. Then I follow through with a hand behind, which picks them up. It's worked on every piggie I've owned.
Also with placing a piggie down that tends to want to jump or flee, simply cover their eyes with one hand while lowering them.
Currently we just bought another piggie that play bites. When he play bites he'll run around, flop and popcorn, and even be very vocal. Then he'll come back to play bite my hand. And repeat his little happiness. Not all piggies are the same.

My Guinea pig is scared of me I tried to do some bonding time and I leave him in the cage with my other Guinea pig he's ok with us walking around the cage but when I go to pick him up he just goes to the other side of the cage the the house that's on the other side ( they are both a 1/2 months old )

My Charlie bug will either try to jump into my hands or climb up the sides of his home to be picked up and cuddled OR he completely acts as though I’m the boogie man and runs away 😂 lol. He’s a goofy guy 💁🏽‍♀️

I have a question in regards to the water bottles in the background (attached to the cages). Is there a reason they are all slanted? Does that help them not leak?

I have been looking into finding a pet that likes to be cuddled and is small enough that an apartment manager wouldnt have reason to worry. When I first started my research, I had read an article that talked about small animals and if they like to be handled. It was so misleading that I told my mom, maybe a guinea pig. Now I'm honestly starting to second guess myself because I wanted a dog, but I just can't have one right now, and I wanted something that could be ok with me wanting to love it all the time. I was getting ready to make plans to go see Saskia and get a couple of piggies... I just am so torn now. When it comes to small animals, I've handled a rabbit and a hamster. I was much more comfortable with the rabbit, it was still very young, but years ago I was bitten by an adult one after being instructed on how to pick them up, so I still have a bit of anxiety at the thought of getting one for myself.
Gosh, maybe I should just get a fish...
