THIS is the video that was missing from the Internet. There's a lot of conflicting advice out there and almost none on how to deal with a new unsocialized piggy. Our babies are 8 weeks old, we've had them 2 weeks and haven't been able to pick them up . We ended up having to catch them in a towel just so we could clean the cage. Thank you Saskia, it's great to see how the expert does it.

I encourage piggy parents to use a cuddle sack to collect the piggy from the cage. The piggy runs in, and you then scoop up pig & pouch. Pig feels safe within the confines of the cuddle sack, and you can start the handling process with them in the cuddle sack or transfer to a blanket/towel.

Mine will only do that after we put them in our mobile potty box. When doing lap time, about every 20 min (sooner if they give the signals) we put them in the potty box and tell them to go potty. We wait for them to finish pooping and peeing then put our hands back in and ask if they are done, or if they want to go back to the cage. They will climb onto our hands for us to take them out of the potty box (a plastic tote box with guinea big paper bedding in it).

    • @iDaleesaDoHair
      @iDaleesaDoHair 3 роки тому +3

@@j_fizzle Thanks for asking. Trial & Error mixed with consistency. When they were younger we were always getting peed and pooped on, lol. (gotta love lap pads) I just started putting them in the box and talking to them in my 'piggie voice' lol saying/asking things like "does Elle have to go potty?" "go potty!" etc. I'd wait until after they go THEN pick them up and hold them for awhile. Starting out holding them for shorter periods and putting them back in the potty pox. I also would say things like "good job" or "yeah" after they go in the potty box before I pick them back up. It's very rare they pee or poop on us now. But I always put them in the potty box first to give them a chance to go before I hold them. Then keep an eye on time and any signs they have to go (wiggling, bitting, trying to get away, being vocal....specific signs that you will learn to recognize over time). We have 3 pigs. Each of them are different. One of them has a weaker bladder and has to go more often. Best wishes. Hope this was helpful!

I really was blessed with my piggie. She’s so zen which is great bc she’s a class pet. Kids take turns holding her (in a pouch type thing) in their lap when they read. Not too many or for too long and they police each other very well. Or they can sit by her habitat and read. I have a standard cage for night but two habitats put together for day. I teach them a lot I’ve learned from you. Her and my bird are bonded. I literally had a parakeet fly up in my yard. 🤦‍♀️. Thankfully I had a huge cage from rehabbing a squirrel.

My 2 girls are exact opposites. One is like Casanova and will come to the side of the cage and actually want to be picked up and cuddled. My other, the psycho Aby., still won't let me pick her up easily. It's been almost 3 years and I have to corner her every time. I rarely can touch her at all when in the cage, no head scratches or chin tickles nothing! But once I have her, I get kisses and cuddles and she loves to be pet. She used to be really bad about putting her back in the cage, she'd try to jump out of my hands etc but after I watched the video you did awhile back about that, I tried your technique and she's much better. I set her down but dont remove my hands unless she's calm, she still runs away as soon as take my hands away but it's more of a slow scamper instead of a frenzied mad dash for freedom.
Also, I hold them both like a football like you do only the other way around, bum in the palm of my hand and head at my elbow, they'll both go sound asleep like that
    Thanks for another great video

i am actually only 12 years old. this might seem very young, but i'm very, very experienced with guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, etc,, but especially guinea pigs. we currently have five piggies, although. one of pour females is pregnant. anyway, we have two very very skittish ones and then the rest are all just a little skittish. so, although i knew all of this, i played this for my younger siblings who know none of this, and it has really helped with scratching, picking up, releasing, etc., and its made guinea pig breeding, housing, and owning altogether just much much easier. thank you, Saskia!

thank you for another great video. If the area is too big I partition it so that they have a very limited run area. I have extra wire cube squares that I fold around them. After that I follow them with my hands the way Saska does in a previous video and then pick them up. One of my guinea pigs lets me pick her up any old time, the rest don't like the initial pick up. The less time spent herding them, the calmer they are, which is why I limit the herding area to a few squares.

This is actually really useful for me.. i am currently studying animal care and we have 3 guinea pigs at the care location and they are all pretty skittish.. there is one that is alone wich i’ve not had any issues with myself as she usually hides under the bedding so i can easily scoop her up because she will stay there and feels safe under the bedding.. the other two however are super duper skittish.. so the explanation of how to grab them the best really cleared stuff up.. (i did already hold them the way you did but i grew up around animals and am used to holding animals that way as for me it’s the easiest way to hold them.. and the most stable aswell.. )

I always tell my pets what is about to happen. I address one by name to get her attention and then say "TREATS!" or "pellets" or "litter," etc. Sort of like a command so they know what to expect. When I need to pick one up, I say "Come out?"

Basically, Guinea pigs will always hate being picked up, but, Saskia technique is so effective, that it makes the guinea a little less scared. It's like when you see a big doggo for the 50th time, and you know that doggo. But it always runs up to you, and you instinctively get scared for a moment, but then decide not to run or just run a little then stop, realizing that there is no reason to run. The doggo is nice. This is what guinea pigs feel once they start getting used to you. It's very nice to see.

Great instructions!! Its about helping the pig feel secure. What about using a towel? I use a towel or cuddle cup when holding pigs. Then I wrap the towel or close the sides of the cup around pig and put the pig back in cage letting the pig walk out of the towel/cup. I continue to hold it until they have completely walked out making sure no feet are caught in towel.

One of my guinea pigs is easy to pick up. Her I can pick up with one hand and she will stay still. When on the floor she comes to me and puts her front paws on my hand and then I scoop up her but.
My other guinea pig doesn't like to be picked up. In the cage I can pick her up using two hands. But when she is on the floor I use a different method. I trained her to go into a fleece house. Then I pick up the house and carry her to the cage. She now nows to stay still untill I tell her to come out.
So if your guinea pig really hates to be picked up, train them to go into something. That way you can avoid a lot of stress.

Guinea Pigs rock. At the end I think they want feeding from the wheeking just like my babies. plus I want to marry you. Oh your married already. I love people who love the Guineas. Lots of love from London UK from someone who adopts abandoned Piggies. Keep up the good work.

Useful vid as usual. My four girls don't like being picked up from their cage. But they like going into a cosy bed to be taken away cause they feel secure. To tidy their cage every day I put them in a small one on a table close to their c and c cage. They know when the staff is over and they chew their grids in a hurry to get back home and I don't need to do anything, they jump in my arms, in an order they know perfectly. Number one is,,, Nina ! Number two is..... Etc. That's the game they like. Kiss to everybody. OLD FRENCH LADY

I guide mine into a pigloo and pick them up from there, seems the least stressful option for them.
