To execute a copied component on Windows, after you start to move it, press Control. Just wanted to share in case anyone else on Windows was like me trying to figure out how to copy. You mentioned to move it and then hit Option. I thought, I don't have an option button. I then realized you are on a Mac. I was paying more attention to what you're teaching in SketchUp. I have Windows so I had to press different buttons to figure out what button would execute a copy. On Windows, it's control. Just wanted to share. Thank you a million times over and over for your two videos. You are a blessing. Thanks for taking the time to do these for us that want to learn SketchUp.
April is a natural teacher! This very basic tutorial appears to be exactly what I need to get over the seemingly huge initial stumbling block of getting started with this very capable program. Looking forward to learning enough to hopefully be able to design out some awesome workshop design/layout scenarios before I do the build.

I've recently started using SketchUp in a 30-day free trial. There's a lot to learn! I've been watching UA-cam instruction videos about SketchUp that have been helpful but, it's amazing (and often confusing) how different instructors have very different teaching techniques, good and not-so-good. Being a retired college professor, I'm finicky about teaching techniques. April is an excellent teacher. First, she's an eager student who wants to know how things work and how to apply them to everyday life. She has an insatiable curiosity. This is a beneficial trait for any good instructor. Second, it is my guess that she teaches in the manner she learns - by breaking down components in easy-to-understand steps and concepts. She's a user-friendly instructor par excellence. Third, she exudes a pragmatic positivity that is infectious and develops instant trust from her viewers. This is paramount. I turn to April's videos first when I want to learn a new technique that I know little or nothing about because she's a delight to watch and gives solid information that I know has been well-researched. Kudos to you, April, for all of the wealth of knowledge you bring to each and every video. I feel honored to be one of your students.

@25:16, you can also type in how far you want it as oppose to using the measure tool. To add on to that, you can type "x3", to create it 2 more times and to that exact same distance
Absolutely brilliant! I’ve been looking for a good tutorial on Sketchup for weeks now and this has it all. I like your presentation speed, no gaps, no bulls**t, no umming and erring 😄. I first started watching your videos over 4 years ago, maybe more like 5 years, you did small projects. And made your workshop shelves, French cleat style which I copied for my own workshop. You’ve come a long way since then and so has your tools and machinery ! You’ve got more equipment than I had in my School workshop. Keep safe

This is by far the best tutorial on SketchUp I’ve ever seen. I’ve been intimidated by learning this program so I’ve avoided using it altogether. I can say in the last week I’ve spent a couple hours practicing every day and I’ve successfully modeled all new cabinets for my laundry room and a new built-in wine rack for my basement! So much easier and helps you develop a strategy for how you’ll actually build it, too. Keep going with this - so much knowledge you have to share, I’m sure!! Thanks from Nebraska! :)

Great video. One of the hardest things to get used to is that you don't click and hold the mouse button down, so unlike every other software. You emphasized the no hold operation that is required. Cleared up a lot of difficulties I was having. Now on to video 2!
Me too, I started so many times and failed, and this video is the only video that kept me interested and got me all the way to the end of the video and I got some useful sketch out of it.

Well April after watching your channel for some time I’m really impressed. I’ve been a electrician for going on close to 40 years something I love. But I love love wood working and I’m building a timber frame house I have a vision and this software will put me on the right path thank you so very much for this. I've used AutoCad for several decades, but never SketchUp. This is a perfect tool for quick 3D modeling of projects for the wood shop. Great job with this into!! Definitely worth the time to watch this!! Well done, thanks!
I have watched at least a dozen "Beginner" videos for Sketchup over the years, (all the way back to the early days that Google owned it) and I've never been able to grasp it, until now. Your teaching style is similar to mine. I used to teach Accounting Software classes. I would teach the classes like I was teaching my Mom how to do it. You explain the simplest of tasks without making us feel like idiots. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely amazing video for a beginner like me! I'm way more of a visual leraner than anything. Super clear and simple instructions. Only thing so far is at 24:24 when building a block on top of a block to make a copy. triple clicking it selects both the top block and the one it is sitting on top of. So I cannot independently select the small box and make a copy of it only.
Hi April, I'm very glad that you decided to shoot the video where you deal with CAD system. Few authors - carpenters discuss this topic. I do not need it, I am an engineer and I master several of these drawing programs. But I like to see such a dispenser processed directly by the joiner. Thanks for the rest of your fans.

I have tried to use this program several times and the frustration drives me back to pencil and paper every time. I used AutoCAD in college, so I didn’t think this could be so difficult. I love all your videos, so decided to give your explanation a try since it would likely correlate to woodworking. You came through! You've crushed it April. I'm hoping you continue this series. I could use help figuring out why some components appear to become one with other components, and, some stay separate. I went from a frustrated old fart who uninstalled the program twice before AW, to making a respectable model of my solar PV array for my building inspector after watching AW's P1 and P2!

It took me hours to design this simple desk on paper, and I made a copy of it while I watched your video. Very helpful, you are a wonderful teacher. I used Sketchup in the past, then decided I needed to go to Fusion and subsequently FreeCad. Both are very difficult to learn. I am back to Sketchup, it does what I want, and I can spend my time woodworking not fighting with the software. Thanks.
OMG April i tried to teach myself Sketch Up and i got so friggin frustrated i was so happy to see that you one of my favorite UA-camrs was doing this series ! I appreciate any kind of help I’m 56 years old and a retired Wookworker by trade with no professional help on computers actually i self taught myself as much as i could after suffering a Major Stroke that forced me to retire early as the Traumatic Brain Injury wiped out 90 to 95% of my brains right hemisphere which actually controls the left side of your body movements so now everything i do i can only use my right hand to do it my left hand and arm are partially paralyzed now that you showed some basics i will try the Sketch up again ! As. After my original Frustration i just shut down that Computer all together I know that i will enjoy drawing in it as unfortunately. After the injury its nearly impossible to sketch by hand any more on top of it all after the Stroke and leaving my job my lifestyle changed radically both physically, financially , and of course Emotionally as well as i did wind up losing everything i owned at one time At this time I’m between homes and Shops but i do hope this is temporary for now and actually do hope to set up a new shop that would be capable for me to use safely ! I did watch this video and its exactly what i was hoping to find before when i tried SketchUp. After downloading it

I just started with Sketchup last night. I watched a couple of other videos that got me started, but left me with question about some of the things that were happening as I manipulated items. Your video has answered all of those questions and also given me additional information to reduce a lot of the issues I was running into. I gave Sketchup another go after watching this vid. I already tried learning it by watching the Sketchup tutorials linked to the app but they were horrible. You a good teacher by showing by examples. You start small and build on that small and build it bigger. I can see why you depend on this tool. Keep broadcasting!!
great intro April. Only thing I'd add is with the push pull tool once you have the face selected you can tap the control/command key to leave the original edge lines in place (so the new section is already divided from the original) I find that really handy when doing things like stairs or steps.
I really admire you, April and these tutorials are most excellent. Are you planning on doing more? Would love to keep watching. I'm riveted! I have invented something in my mind and now I need to make it real. This has been super helpful.

I wanted to say Thank You April, for this video you created! I've been trying to work in SketchUp for the past couple of months with no good results. The problem I was having is : 1. I couldn't find out the basics on how to stop a line from drawing . 2. I couldn't even find out how to work the keyboard, together with the mouse. Some videos would show someone doing it, but they wouldn't explain anything in regards to - click once (don't leave your finger and drag) lift your finger off mouse, then when you get where you want, click again(or hit space to do over(or is it escape?). Anyway, fundamental things like this. The other videos just assume you know(I guess)? Now I can look at your video and actually have fun learning instead of quitting in frustration! Thanks again!

Have been using SketchUp for years. Now I know so much more about how to use it properly and just how much time I've wasted doing things the wrong way. The penny dropped with components... Such a simple concept that has opened up my world. Many many thanks for a thorough and simple video.
This is by far the best tutorial on SketchUp I’ve ever seen. I’ve been intimidated by learning this program so I’ve avoided using it altogether. I can say in the last week I’ve spent a couple hours practicing every day and I’ve successfully modeled all new cabinets for my laundry room and a new built-in wine rack for my basement! So much easier and helps you develop a strategy for how you’ll actually build it, too. Keep going with this - so much knowledge you have to share, I’m sure!! Thanks from Nebraska! :)

Great video. One of the hardest things to get used to is that you don't click and hold the mouse button down, so unlike every other software. You emphasized the no hold operation that is required. Cleared up a lot of difficulties I was having. Now on to video 2!
I've been messing around with sketchup for years and always struggled with drawing when dragging. You just saved me from so many aggravated nights.
Me too, I started so many times and failed, and this video is the only video that kept me interested and got me all the way to the end of the video and I got some useful sketch out of it.

Well April after watching your channel for some time I’m really impressed. I’ve been a electrician for going on close to 40 years something I love. But I love love wood working and I’m building a timber frame house I have a vision and this software will put me on the right path thank you so very much for this. It was a lot to take in but I will watch again thank you once again

I've used AutoCad for several decades, but never SketchUp. This is a perfect tool for quick 3D modeling of projects for the wood shop. Great job with this into!! Definitely worth the time to watch this!! Well done, thanks!

I have watched at least a dozen "Beginner" videos for Sketchup over the years, (all the way back to the early days that Google owned it) and I've never been able to grasp it, until now. Your teaching style is similar to mine. I used to teach Accounting Software classes. I would teach the classes like I was teaching my Mom how to do it. You explain the simplest of tasks without making us feel like idiots. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely amazing video for a beginner like me! I'm way more of a visual leraner than anything. Super clear and simple instructions. Only thing so far is at 24:24 when building a block on top of a block to make a copy. triple clicking it selects both the top block and the one it is sitting on top of. So I cannot independently select the small box and make a copy of it only.
I continue to find your level of radness on the steady climb as I discover one video after the next. You my friend, are infriggincredible!

I do not need it, I am an engineer and I master several of these drawing programs. But I like to see such a dispenser processed directly by the joiner.

Thanks April! I have seen plenty of SketchUp tutorials that in the end were not really helpful in a practical sense. Yours was very easy to follow, made good practical sense and lots of good practical detail and great real woodworking examples.
I have tried to use this program several times and the frustration drives me back to pencil and paper every time. I used AutoCAD in college, so I didn’t think this could be so difficult. I love all your videos, so decided to give your explanation a try since it would likely correlate to woodworking. You came through! I feel like I can sit down and whip something out now after just this one video. I can’t wait for #2. Thank you!

You've crushed it April. I'm hoping you continue this series. I could use help figuring out why some components appear to become one with other components, and, some stay separate. I went from a frustrated old fart who uninstalled the program twice before AW, to making a respectable model of my solar PV array for my building inspector after watching AW's P1 and P2!
This was extremely helpful. I wish I had learned SketchUp years ago. I followed along and made a model of the computer desk I made back in December. It took me hours to design this simple desk on paper, and I made a copy of it while I watched your video. I'm planning to use SketchUp to make the plans for the desk and built-in bookshelves my kids and I are going to make over my vacation week this week. Thank you so much!

Very helpful, you are a wonderful teacher. I used Sketchup in the past, then decided I needed to go to Fusion and subsequently FreeCad. Both are very difficult to learn. I am back to Sketchup, it does what I want, and I can spend my time woodworking not fighting with the software. Thanks.

OMG April i tried to teach myself Sketch Up and i got so friggin frustrated i was so happy to see that you one of my favorite UA-camrs was doing this series ! I appreciate any kind of help I’m 56 years old and a retired Wookworker by trade with no professional help on computers actually i self taught myself as much as i could after suffering a Major Stroke that forced me to retire early as the Traumatic Brain Injury wiped out 90 to 95% of my brains right hemisphere which actually controls the left side of your body movements so now everything i do i can only use my right hand to do it my left hand and arm are partially paralyzed now that you showed some basics i will try the Sketch up again ! As. After my original Frustration i just shut down that Computer all together I know that i will enjoy drawing in it as unfortunately. After the injury its nearly impossible to sketch by hand any more on top of it all after the Stroke and leaving my job my lifestyle changed radically both physically, financially , and of course Emotionally as well as i did wind up losing everything i owned at one time At this time I’m between homes and Shops but i do hope this is temporary for now and actually do hope to set up a new shop that would be capable for me to use safely ! I did watch this video and its exactly what i was hoping to find before when i tried SketchUp. After downloading it

I just started with Sketchup last night. I watched a couple of other videos that got me started, but left me with question about some of the things that were happening as I manipulated items. Your video has answered all of those questions and also given me additional information to reduce a lot of the issues I was running into. I plan to play around a bit more and then take a look at your other Sketchup videos.

I gave Sketchup another go after watching this vid. I already tried learning it by watching the Sketchup tutorials linked to the app but they were horrible. After watching the first 5 mins of your tutorial, I was able to make the program do what I wanted! Nicely done. Feel free to add more in the future! I’m defo subscribing.

great intro April. Only thing I'd add is with the push pull tool once you have the face selected you can tap the control/command key to leave the original edge lines in place (so the new section is already divided from the original) I find that really handy when doing things like stairs or steps.
I really admire you, April and these tutorials are most excellent. Are you planning on doing more? Would love to keep watching. I'm riveted! I have invented something in my mind and now I need to make it real. This has been super helpful.

I wanted to say Thank You April, for this video you created! I've been trying to work in SketchUp for the past couple of months with no good results. The problem I was having is : 1. I couldn't find out the basics on how to stop a line from drawing .
2. I couldn't even find out how to work the keyboard, together with the mouse. Some videos would show someone doing it, but they wouldn't explain anything in regards to - click once (don't leave your finger and drag) lift your finger off mouse, then when you get where you want, click again(or hit space to do over(or is it escape?). Anyway, fundamental things like this. The other videos just assume you know(I guess)? Now I can look at your video and actually have fun learning instead of quitting in frustration! Thanks again!
