Again,I come to you for knowledge. Again, after head scratching, I figure it out and you back me up. Lol. Thank you for the tutorials. I’m the village idiot and I don’t solely do bridal. Lots of “fudging “ on rental gowns, or the “ don’t cut anything off, I want to sell it” pageant dresses. I love love love your videos. I sooooo appreciate the work that you do. Keep it up and keep me on my toes and learning. Hugs and stitches from South Alabama💋
Thank you for this video. You have just saved my sanity! I'm using this simple method to take up the shoulders on a MoG gown. I did not include the sleeve in my stitching and was unhappy with the results! The problem was the applique on the sleeve! Just releasing that, sewing a dart in the sleeve and reapplying the applique should do the trick! Thanks, again, for a most informative video!
Girl. I fuddled around over the years and have done this myself. Cursed all the appliqué remove and stitching it back on. It is so nice to watch you do this and have drawings. You rule. Dang, just wish that you were like my best friend neighbor. 😉. Omg. Chasing the pearl!!!!! You are the queen. Thanks for being my not so quilt pleasure. Now, where is that pageant dress that I stopped working on to watch this video. 😂
Odd, I always get notifications when you post a new video. I am logged in. Did not get a notification for this one, but was fortunate enough to see it in the body of the page when you opened UA-cam up. I sure would hate to miss one of your videos!!!
Yes, the notification system here is known to be quite glitchy. :/ When I get my act together, (ha!) I hope to set an established upload time. (For example, every Monday evening at 8pm est.) & then, my #bstbesties would know to pop in even if not notified. Glad you found this vid! :)
Great job! My brides appreciate the fact I try to never trim off the excess in the seams. I tell them that the next seamstress will be so happy to see that we left the original seams inside to release for a larger or tall bride in the future.
Yes!! It is important to understand our place & that we don't own the gown. The bride does. I always have a conversation with the bride before I cut. I need to understand if she views her gown as being for her, for 1 day only- seeking perfection on that one day. Or, is the gown something she may want to sell, loan to a friend or family member, and wants it to remain easily adjustable. It is so important to know your client, because everyone is different. :)
Amen! Do you find that leaving the untrimmed side seams actually help give stability to the seams especially if they did not have boning in them? So many dresses are made like nightgowns with no boning these days.
First of all THANK YOU for sharing all of your genius with all of us. You make me cry happy tears sometimes, as the last dress I did was a success because of YOU! I have 20 years of alterations experience, but just breaking into bridal. The dress I currently face needs the top of shoulders taken up 1”. It’s a (very) backless dress. The problem I’m having is now that the top shoulders are taken up, the armhole is smaller. How do I refit the sleeves back in that armhole? If I take in the sleeve fabric that attaches to armhole, it’s way too tight!!! Do I make armhole larger, maybe near the side seam to accommodate the sleeve? Thank you in advance again for your kindness and wealth of information. I would also love to know your pricing scale for bridal alterations…and how we can support you!
Thanks for watching! You can drop the armscye. Sometimes when I have a smaller armscye but the sleeve fits right, I put in a nice flat box pleat at the underarm of the sleeve, so it can immediately bloom to accommodate the arm. I do have videos about money! Check my playlists. Looks for money questions answered, money Affirmations. And most importantly for pricing, block scheduling video.
@@BridalSewing dropping the armscye means to cut the armhole a bit correct? Maybe at the bottom where it meets the armhole? Are there ANY videos you know of for this? I can’t find anything on armscye adjustment. 😢
Some of my gowns like that will tolerate gathering the sleeve head and top sleeve. After you have taken up the shoulder. I also have "adjusted" the leaves or flowers of lace to hide it some. Of course this would be for brides who don't need a deep alteration. 😁
Would you ever share your price structure fir these alterations. I know every region is so different. But I know pertinent way undercharging myself. Is there a range Brenda?
Hey! I was wondering what you do for women who come in who need some breast support for their dress. Do you supply the cups? Do you ask them to bring them in? I just scheduled a heavy lady for an appointment to alter her bridesmaid dress. She sent a picture. We agreed that it needs cups sewn in. I suggested she go to Target or order from Amazon cups for me to sew in. I also suggested that if she has a bra she likes and would be fine parting with, I could cut it up and use that. I thought about offering to make custom cups, I have foam, but I've never done it and don't think I should start with an actual customer. I do have cups for size A, B, C and D for prom dresses, but I wonder if there is something I should do for the once in a while larger sized woman that would be a good service? Maybe an episode talking about undergarments generally? The dress is a one-shoulder, flowy, draped dress that doesn't have a lot of structure or support from what I can tell from the picture.
I do all of the above. I stock some. Some brides bring them in. I have hacked bras before. I just do what the gown calls for. I can't really do a video on this platform addressing undergarment issues, decision making, applications, etc. That would be an exhaustive video- an e-course would be the most appropriate for a subject that broad. Maybe someday! There's soooo much to this subject of #BridalSewing
I supply push up gel cups for my brides here. I order them from wawak A-D. they really like them. Joanns does not stock them. I charge the brides $25 + $15 fir the installation of these cups and extra if I need to remove old bust pads and any boning involved.
The inside of the bodice where you took in through all the layers - do you just tack that down towards the front? You don't clip away the allowance? It doesn't look like it is too bulky, but it does have some bulk right?
Yes, just roll forward & tack in this case. Actually, the allowance worked almost like boning in this case. This gown can use extra structure & adding the tab inside actually beefs things up. The brides have not complained of bulk. I have done the budget alterations on the side seams twice on this gown.
Usually laying it flat before sewing lace down is enough on this dress. The lace is quite thick. On gowns that can't handle that much bulk, I would trim it & french seam it.
Wouldn’t it be bulky to shorten the shoulder be sewing a straight seam, I mean the extra material is underneath the shoulder? Easy do with lace which not produce a bulky seam but I’m talking about a thicker fabric.
You do you! :) I avoid clear thread on bodices when I can, because brides complain about it itching. Truth! :D I wish manufacturers would get the memo, because I'm really tired of lining these gowns with fresh mesh to alleviate the itching. lol
How do you approach the cost? Do you tell them it's (for example) $150 for me to take the entire sleeve off or I can do a little magic and hide the seam for $75? While they are standing in the dress? Thanks again, It's nice to know there are other people who are willing to cut a few corners for those on a budget.
Yes, that's exactly what i do. & luckily most of the shortcuts are easily reversed. So, I tell them, if they don't like it, we can go ahead and do it all the way, the right way.
ua-cam.com/video/MlDV26xakTo/v-deo.html Def watch this through. It will help a lot! I basically charge for my time. I *always* give a range. High range is alarming covers everything that Murphys Law can throw at us. Of course, I explain that to them.

Yes. That's what makes this gown so different. The brides come in here looking like football players, there is sooo much excess! Ug. :(
