    This garment is lighter, and hopefully more visible than the black garment I used in the first video.
    Shoulder fit is the most important area to improve on because your shoulders frame your face. As you go about your day, your face and shoulder area is usually the most noticed part of your body by other people.
    Take the time to make sure your shoulder seams are in the correct place. Make sure the seams aren't hanging off your arms! The most common fit mistake is shoulder seams on a garment that are too wide.
    Quick tips for adjusting shoulders. Adding darts or tucks to the shoulder middle is the quickest and easiest way to fit shoulder seams to your body.
    Check out my video here on how to have the best fit, including shoulder, waist, wrist, and ankle placement.

    My newest video on how to adjust shoulder seams, including how to make the chest smaller in the same adjustment seam/dart.
    This one reduces the width of the shoulders and the chest. You can even take the dart seam all the way down to reduce the hip width as well.

    This is wonderful. I have a large bust and every single other video makes the statement "If it's too big at the shoulder then its too big in the front so we'll just run a seam up the side to match the shorter (now removed) shoulder seam"
    I love this. I'm going to practice with a t-shirt and then put darts in all my baggy ass shirts.

    Hi Emily, I just want to say thank you! I've never did anything more complicated than shortening curtains before. But I just fixed the shoulders on my summer dress and it is perfect! I'm here because purchased a boho top that I liked very much from the clearance rack at TJ Maxx in a medium even though it was too large for me. I thought maybe I could alter the shoulders since it's the area that looks especially too large. This method of altering the shoulder area is simple and something I can do. The blouse will look as if it was intentionally designed this way. I'm so happy I found this method on this video instead of ripping the shoulder seam. It will be less of a headache, and I'm going to be able to wear the cute blouse. Thank you!

      @@k1tyysp1t Hi thanks for asking. I found the denim seams too thick to do a streamline job and it was very noticeable. It has joined my pile of alterations for a seamstress that is an expert in taking the sleeves out. Just an afterthought......I think darts on the shoulder of maybe a thin shirt or blouse might be successful as you can press it afterwards.

    Perfect timing! I just came from your first DIY Shoulder Alteration video. Appreciate the measurements at the side of the video and for using a lighter colour garment!
    Noticed that the seams for the pleated darts are quite visible (obviously) post-tailoring. Is this the same for traditional darts as well, or are traditional dart seams less visible to "others"?

    • @TheFashionRunUp
      @TheFashionRunUp  3 роки тому

      Traditional darts would be flatter and less conspicuous than dart pleats. But both are fairly visible, as they're seams being added to the shoulders.

    Thanks for doing a paler colored shirt. I thought the first version had very clear explanations and good camera perspective to highlight techniques, but the dark fabric did not showcase the work.
    I've been struggling with this very problem for some time. My issue is that once I correct the shoulder tops to fit, as you've demonstrated, there is too much fabric in the arm pit. It gets all bunched up and annoys me so. Any suggestions? Perhaps film an addendum to this video addressing this aspect. I don't want to be forced to remove the arm sleeves, cut new measurements, and reattach them unless there is no other option. As you've said, it is a lot more work to disassemble to make corrections.

    Hi! I have an open cardigan that has too much material on the sides and the shoulders do slouch off me a little. I’d like the whole thing to look slimmer, perhaps more feminine on me. It’s is a viscose and poly blend, white and sheer with shadow stripes.
    Can this be altered in this way??

    • @TheFashionRunUp
      @TheFashionRunUp  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, you could add darts at the shoulders. If it's a sheer fabric, you might be able to see the dart layers on the shoulders. But if you don't mind some visibility, it could work, and hopefully will just look like a design detail!

    • @mulliganstew72
      @mulliganstew72 3 роки тому

      I’m not a seamstress but it would be easier to tackle it from the back of the neck and pull it in to bring in the shoulders, than it would be to add all these darts…if you are not skilled… then it has a pretty flowy feminine look with the shoulders fitting well, very simple. That is what I do.

    can you talk about altering a shirt in the shoulders for more movement? i’m petite and have a small bust but broad shoulders. i can fit a size 6 -8 jacket in every place BUT the shoulders where the jacket will show shoulder divits and not allow for proper movement. If I go bigger it’s too big everywhere else and the shoulder ends up drooping. Sorry if this is confusing but I can’t seem to find anything on this kind of alteration. i saw a video on Threads that said if you bring the arm hole higher up into the armpit it helps with movement which is true but then I have to cut the shoulder which gets super complicated in a jacket. That's a tough, but good question! In general, it's always harder to add fabric to a garment, than to take it away.
