- Shoulder alteration take 2! I redid the video DIY Alteration Shoulder Seam Placement
• DIY Alteration 4 - Sho...
This garment is lighter, and hopefully more visible than the black garment I used in the first video.
Shoulder fit is the most important area to improve on because your shoulders frame your face. As you go about your day, your face and shoulder area is usually the most noticed part of your body by other people.
Take the time to make sure your shoulder seams are in the correct place. Make sure the seams aren't hanging off your arms! The most common fit mistake is shoulder seams on a garment that are too wide.
Quick tips for adjusting shoulders. Adding darts or tucks to the shoulder middle is the quickest and easiest way to fit shoulder seams to your body.
Check out my video here on how to have the best fit, including shoulder, waist, wrist, and ankle placement.

My newest video on how to adjust shoulder seams, including how to make the chest smaller in the same adjustment seam/dart.
This one reduces the width of the shoulders and the chest. You can even take the dart seam all the way down to reduce the hip width as well.

That is such a great idea. Thank you for taking the time to redo the video- the tucks are visible on the lighter blouse and actually add a design element as well.
Thanks! So glad it's helpful!
The diagram on the left top corner really helps. Great addition. I wish more vloggers would do it.
Glad you like it! I'll keep it in mind for future videos as well then!
This is wonderful. I have a large bust and every single other video makes the statement "If it's too big at the shoulder then its too big in the front so we'll just run a seam up the side to match the shorter (now removed) shoulder seam"
I love this. I'm going to practice with a t-shirt and then put darts in all my baggy ass shirts.
This made my dress so cute, the double fold over pleat is so feminine while making the dress overall actually fit. Thank you!
Aw glad it was helpful! The shoulder pleats do make such a cute shoulder detail!
Fantastic tip. The tucks look like they are part of the original design.
Thanks!
Awesome! The dart pleats even proved to be a beautiful design improvement!
Wonderful, I think there's a chance I could do a good job at this! Thanks for making alterations accessible to those who aren't experienced!
You can do it! ✨
Hi Emily, I just want to say thank you! I've never did anything more complicated than shortening curtains before. But I just fixed the shoulders on my summer dress and it is perfect! I'm so happy I stumbled upon your video and didn't take the route of disassembling the sleeve (guaranteed would have been a disaster). Absolutely brilliant method, thank you so so much!
Ah so glad this worked for you!
I just used your video to make pleats in the shoulders of a dress for a wedding guest. This was so very helpful to take in the shoulder! Thank you so much!
Yay! I'm so glad it was helpful!
Just found this video and it worked great on my blouse! Now I'm onto do the same to other tops! Thank you for sharing.
I'm so glad it worked for you!
This video has helped me so much to alter a top i sewed. Thank you! I didn't want to take the sleeve apart so this is perfect!
Thank you for redoing with a lighter fabric. Great video!
You're welcome. I hope it's useful! :)
I'm here because purchased a boho top that I liked very much from the clearance rack at TJ Maxx in a medium even though it was too large for me. I thought maybe I could alter the shoulders since it's the area that looks especially too large. This method of altering the shoulder area is simple and something I can do. The blouse will look as if it was intentionally designed this way. I'm so happy I found this method on this video instead of ripping the shoulder seam. It will be less of a headache, and I'm going to be able to wear the cute blouse. Thank you!
Love this! Let me know how it turns out!
That is an easier way than taking the sleeve out.
I am doing the alteration on thick denim. Wish me luck!
how did it go? i wanted to try this on my denim jacket but i was afraid it wont work
@@k1tyysp1t Hi thanks for asking. I found the denim seams too thick to do a streamline job and it was very noticeable. It has joined my pile of alterations for a seamstress that is an expert in taking the sleeves out. Just an afterthought......I think darts on the shoulder of maybe a thin shirt or blouse might be successful as you can press it afterwards.
Thank you for giving it a go. Liked the workaround avoiding taking out 🎉a sleeve, but was reluctant to try it on a linen shirt. I am however wondering about the one long dart angled to the opening and what the back of that one is like. @barbaracae openingdogan2215
I'm glad you've done another video, the modular shirt really threw me off
This was super helpful, thank you! I'm gonna check out your new video but I'm already excited to try this out!
I used this method on a shirt before I saw your video. Thank you for validating my experiment. Oh, it really does work and looks quite nice.
I'm so glad you found this method too! I agree, it consistently comes out looking nice and cohesive with the original shirt!
Love this! I am to afraid to cut the arm from the shirt, but thankfully I found your videos! Thank you ❤
I hope it works well for you!
Exactly what I was wondering was possible with a shirt I'm tailoring! Thank you 😊
THANK YOU! This was clear and simple and just what I needed.
Amazing! :)
Cool problem solving, nicely presented. Thanks!
So cute and so helpful! I will try this soon with my newly thrifted pussybow blouse with shoulders that have been built for a 7 foot tall linebacker!
So glad it’s helpful! Can’t wait for you to try it!
Awesome tutorial! This is a very refreshing alternative to redoing the whole arm. If you make similar videos next time, I would love a (zoomed in) before and after segment at the end.
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Here is my latest shoulder alteration video where I extend the dart down to reduce the chest width. I tried to include more close-ups just for you!
ua-cam.com/video/uMIiRAg_iXU/v-deo.html
You can also see some closeups on my IG @emilykellerco.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much! Cannot wait to try it!
I’m so glad! I hope it works well for you!
I haven't tried it, but I'm going to. I think this is exactly what I was looking for. Just like your blouse, all my shirts to to come in just a little, to sit nicely on my shoulder.
Thank you!
I'll let you know how it works out.
How did it go?!
This is just what I've been looking for. Thanks so much
You're welcome :)
Thanks 4 using a lighter color garment big improvement
You're welcome!
Great idea to avoid taking the whole sleeve off!
I think I may have to in my situation though, because I'm working with a thicker flannel material, which is also a plaid coloring. 😝 The shirt I bought came with a very straight/horizontal shoulder that is wide on me.
I've just pinned my coaty sort of cardigan thing which the shoulders are too far down! I bought it after I had a baby and Ive lost the weight but still love it! Let's hope it works , when pinned it looks like it will!
Thank you! I will try this on my dress!
How about using a different color thread when demonstrating? The contrast color would help us see the seem better. Thank you!
Ah ok! Thanks for the suggestion! Will try that next time!
Thanks so much. This is truly helpful to me!!!
I'm so glad!
interesting method, looks like a unique fashion addition to the top but how to make it have a clean look?
Nice idea. Exactly what I need. Did you make two darts on the back and two darts in the front? Thanks, I am not much of a seamstress.
Thanks for these two shoulder adjustment videos. I was wondering aside from lining up the seams, how do you keep the shoulder seam from getting too bulky? E.g. It kinda digs when carrying a bag
Good question! With a thicker fabric shirt, I could imagine the build-up would be thick. Maybe try putting the darts closer to the neck, so where your bag strap sits on your shoulder is clear of any darts.
Could you do a video demonstrating the traditional way as well.
You mean like undoing the armhole seam, reshaping and resewing?
@@TheFashionRunUp yes 🙂
@@Anione111I'll add it to my list!
what a great idea for temporary adjustments. i m gonna alter my pregnancy clothes.
Cool idea!
Perfect timing! I just came from your first DIY Shoulder Alteration video. Appreciate the measurements at the side of the video and for using a lighter colour garment!
Noticed that the seams for the pleated darts are quite visible (obviously) post-tailoring. Is this the same for traditional darts as well, or are traditional dart seams less visible to "others"?
Traditional darts would be flatter and less conspicuous than dart pleats. But both are fairly visible, as they're seams being added to the shoulders.
so professional !
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!
You’re welcome! 🙂
Great video! Did you taper off the dart at the bottom or is it just straight down?
They’re just straight down :)
Thank you so much..it helped a lot
I’m so glad it helped!
I’m so glad it helped!
You are genius.
Could we try it on denim jacket too???
Yeah! Why not?!
Thanks for doing a paler colored shirt. I thought the first version had very clear explanations and good camera perspective to highlight techniques, but the dark fabric did not showcase the work.
I've been struggling with this very problem for some time. My issue is that once I correct the shoulder tops to fit, as you've demonstrated, there is too much fabric in the arm pit. It gets all bunched up and annoys me so. Any suggestions? Perhaps film an addendum to this video addressing this aspect. I don't want to be forced to remove the arm sleeves, cut new measurements, and reattach them unless there is no other option. As you've said, it is a lot more work to disassemble to make corrections.
You're welcome! :)
I had the same question. Wish she had replied.
Emily, could you please answer CLG's question. I have the same query.
If you are going to use a lighter garmet, then you need a contrasting back ground for us to be able to see. White shirt on white background doesn't work: still hard to see...
True. It is so hard to see white on white with white machine. Everything is glaring making visibility poor. Probably a beige or sky blue or grey colour would have been better
I want to be a fashion designer. So what can I do suggest me.
Hi! I have an open cardigan that has too much material on the sides and the shoulders do slouch off me a little. I’d like the whole thing to look slimmer, perhaps more feminine on me. It’s is a viscose and poly blend, white and sheer with shadow stripes.
Can this be altered in this way??
Yes, you could add darts at the shoulders. If it's a sheer fabric, you might be able to see the dart layers on the shoulders. But if you don't mind some visibility, it could work, and hopefully will just look like a design detail!
I’m not a seamstress but it would be easier to tackle it from the back of the neck and pull it in to bring in the shoulders, than it would be to add all these darts…if you are not skilled… then it has a pretty flowy feminine look with the shoulders fitting well, very simple. That is what I do.
Ok guys. Take 2! I hope this video is much clearer than the first!
First one here:
ua-cam.com/video/F84cbB_B9s0/v-deo.html
I am angry at designers who assume that busty women have huge shoulders.
How to reduce shoulder size in t-shirt
Cute!
Thanks!
I used to do it this way but my dressmaker told me it’s absolutely unprofessional, terrible and only very lazy dressmakers do it this way , and only excuse is that I’m not dressmaker . So now I took it to her and she can redo it .😀
Would be better when demonstrating an alteration, it be done on a darker fabric
I am gonna try this on a wool coat that stretched out…. HELP!
Try putting it in the dryer!
I am NOT interested in how to alter a shoulder seam. I need to learn exactly how the shoulder seam placement is determined for a woman. Can you help? Many thanks.
I see no need to alter if I do it properly while cutting, etc. Many thanks.
It's usually a straight measurement across back shoulder from the bone at the back of the shoulder to the other side.
Clever stop-gap! Of course, it comes with the trade-off of leaving the chest still too big, but that's not always a big deal. :)
Ah yes, if the whole garment is too big then the chest would remain large. I haven't had that issue. For me, it's just the shoulders that are too big.
Most standard garments are made for a B cup so for me, with DD bust, that’s actually not true. Not everyone is a B cup!
Could you please do a video that addresses alteration/reduction of the chest area as well.
🙏🙏🙏
I am tall for a woman (5'9", and I am the shortest sister in my family!) and so my problem is making shoulders wider. I hope I can find someone who shows the reverse=widening shoulders.
Thanks for this suggestion! I will keep this in mind for future videos! Widening / lengthening is always more of a challenge since you need to add or create more fabric. But I like the challenge!
@@TheFashionRunUp Thank you! That would be great! I have seen a few videos showing how to make t-shirts and blouses a little bigger and how to make pants bigger. I have turned a significantly smaller denim skirt larger by seam ripping the side seams and adding two panels of crazy patterned fabric.
I was thinking about using one of the t-shirt techniques from Catherine Sews on a duster coat, but I haven't gotten brave enough yet because I will have to add it to the lining also. ua-cam.com/video/lqC6q_HVo8I/v-deo.html
If it is a checked shirt., It looks weird
Great idea, but you should have taken a dark(er) shirt because it is difficult to see with a white shirt, white machine, and 😊white hands! I learned from your audio not so much from the video!!! NONETHLESS, Thank you for taking the time to make this video
Showed nothing.
Seam
I think you should take video from above.. only show the shirt instead of you so that can know what you are doing..
Need to take magnified or close up pictures of the darts that you are trying to show. In that respect this video was not much better than the previous one with dark fabric.
Great idea but bad video. Would be terribly better if you shoot down somehow, using a phone holder oa smthing and zoom out on it, and use a thick marker on the bright colored shirt.
This is as bad as the first video. Your camera is not picking up all of the blouse.
can you talk about altering a shirt in the shoulders for more movement? i’m petite and have a small bust but broad shoulders. i can fit a size 6 -8 jacket in every place BUT the shoulders where the jacket will show shoulder divits and not allow for proper movement. If I go bigger it’s too big everywhere else and the shoulder ends up drooping. Sorry if this is confusing but I can’t seem to find anything on this kind of alteration. i saw a video on Threads that said if you bring the arm hole higher up into the armpit it helps with movement which is true but then I have to cut the shoulder which gets super complicated in a jacket. Thank you!!
That's a tough, but good question! In general, it's always harder to add fabric to a garment, than to take it away.
If it's expanding the shoulder width, I would imagine adding a strip of fabric to the center back seam area would work best.
Great video! Did you taper off the dart at the bottom or is it just straight down?
These ones I did straight down so it’s more of a pleat than a dart.
