Here are 5 things that will likely break on your E85/E86 BMW Z4.
I made this video after talking to fellow Z4 owners as well as having some of these issues myself.

What about the BMW Z4 cup holders... they should be number one!
First thing that broke was the passenger side cup holder on my Z4 too, and it’s been broken ever since.
@@alexs1429 mine too my brother... mine too... cheap plastic parts which made absolutely no sense why BMW would do such a thing.
I can't get either one of mine out ! Seem to be stuck !
Great video thanks! I bought mine around 5 years ago now on a 10 plate and so far nothing drastic has happened! The only thing I find is in heavy rain, the left indicator rear blinks faster, but when it all dries out,fine! Great car!!! My wife doesn't like it because it's heavy clutch pedal. 😵💫

Couldn't really understand last thing you said after water pump? What was the other thing that needs changing
Cooling system expansion tank crack and leak. I have had this expansion tanks fail on both my Z3 and Z4. Also Control arm bushings wear out very quickly.

Now the latest problem is my keys need change but Fob can be done!

Audrey Lenin on my 50K at the dealer just a bit over $1200
And that was like five years ago but now I’m at 100K miles inspection not sure how much yet!

Toms Garage it was not fix just few parts change for 50k inspections
How's the 5 speed auto on the E85 2.5i? are those reliable?

I think they are ok when maintained, but the manual is the way to go in the Z4

Also need to replace front struts as early as 95km . The gas seems to leak out of them causing the front to ride a critical 2-3cm lower. You'll notice the car scraping on driveways you used to be able to drive up at decent speed, more than 2km/hr. You always see old Z4s with their front chin all torn up.
Just bought an 03 Z4. Lower front is a little banged up. This must be the issue. Never owned a Z4 before, wasn't sure how low they are supposed to be. Although, it seems to ride ok.
I just bought this car with 125k miles and ill tell u what i have to change...
1. Valve cover gasket
2. Oil pan gasket
3. Motor mounts
4. Expansion tank
5. Disa valve or rebuild kit
6. Vanos seals to teflon seals
7. "Sticky" steering wheel.. still need to fix

How did you do the oil pan gasket? Get german auto solutions disa upgrade kit. My oil is leaking and I can't figure it out after replacing the ofhg.
@@rocknohroll i did them myself based on my mechanic knowledge so its cheap but when i went to bmw they quoted me around $10,000 to fix everything! I did everything myself with bmw parts for less than a grand

Tom, I just bought a Z4 two weeks ago. It has an airbag light on. I bought a C110 code reader, but it won't communicate with the airbag related system. Any ideas?
Hmm I am not 100% sure why that is? Are you part of the Z4 Forum? You could ask there? :)
If it’s anything like the z3 you need a reader with an adapter that fits a big plug under the hood on the right hand side, hard to explain here is the link if you order this it comes with the adapter www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074SJX16G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You need a obd2 diagnostic reader. 10 quid on ebay
Most likely your airbag control module is water damaged. Happened to mine where I could not communicate with the srs module and its $200 to replace used and coded in by myself. Remove the console and check the wires for green corrosion.
I fixed this on my BMW 320i which has the same brain.
Turned out to need a new passenger sensor.
You can buy a thing to delete the code if everything is ok and you will need that anyway.
Sounds like you might have that already.
I bought a scavenged passenger sensor module and fitted that. Seat out job but probably an hour's work max. Reset the codes with the Chinese device and it stuck.

What year(s) of the Z4 does this video apply to?
The E85 model so I'd say from '03-'08
The roof motor is located on the other side of the car Tom?
left side(passenger) in my Z4 :)
Owned a 2003 2.5 for four years now and just had my first regulator issue - i'm hoping its a loose bolt thats come away [heard a clunk] but prepared for the worst

I would vote for the plastic headliner that runs along the forward edge of the convertible top. If you ever have to take it off, something will crack and a new one is like $600. I used melted scrap ABS plastic to repair it, but what a piece of junk. It has some cracks in it now that came out of nowhere, but unless it rattles, I say screw it. Just like the cup holders.

I really like it and I enjoyed it (I have a few videos where I have taken it on road trips etc)
Just make sure you have 1-2k spare for maintenance as its going to need more as it ages. But if you get a 6 cylinder it drives great!
you don't need to buy new window regulators btw, u can replace just the cable for around £15 if yo do it yoyrself
it's not difficult, but it is fiddly and time consuming
saves a hell of alot of money though

The number 1 is the Expansion Tank, number 2 is the roof top motor…….if you reach way back and then down….you can pull that motor into the trunk…where they should have in the 1st place.

Went out after 5 years but got it on manually,pain in the butt though!

I just bought this last week, on the repair book I see the last owner has changed The roof motor and a new roof because someone cut it in half with a knife...

You forgot the sticky servo steering in hot weather on e85.
Yeah that is true, luckily in Scotland we might get one hot day in a decade that this could become an issue.

I have no idea, apparently percentage wise the UK buys more convertibles per head than the rest of Europe :P

subscribed and liked purely for all the negative nellys in comments :) most of the faults you mention are fairly regular faults that i have had happen on other makes and models of car though, and apart from the roof motor issue are fairly cheap to fix

If BMW would have used sealed electric motors on the hydraulic pump for the convertible top you wouldn't have a problem with them shorted out! There is no way the 0 to 10 seconds raising or lowering the top will overheat that enclosed motor! I laugh at German engineering superiority!
I know I really wish they did something better for that roof motor!!
