Jailed for riding a bike in Egypt 🇪🇬 vA 2

  • I start riding down the Nile river, hoping to go from Abu Sir to Beni Suef. When I reach Dahshur, the police stops me. First, they keep at the checkpoint for 2 hours, before allowing me to continue my way to Beni Suef. Very soon after they released me, the police catches me again, and starts escorting me on my way down South. A few minutes later, they tell me to stop, and they force me to return to the check point where the caught me first. I stay three more hours with the police at the check point, and they finally decide that I have to return to my accomodation in Abu Sir...
Then, the police starts monitoring all my movements through the reception of the guest house where I stay. Two days later, I decide to head down to Beni Suef by taxi, hoping to be able to get rid of the police monitoring in Beni Suef, in order to continue my journey towards southern Egypt. But when I go to Beni Suef, the police keeps monitoring me by calling every 5 minutes my taxi driver, also, they provide me several police escorts all the way to Beni Suef, while there is no danger at all. The taxi driver just hallucinates with what the police is doing with me.
Once I arrive in Beni Suef, the police tells me that I am not allowed to go in the streets of Beni Suef on my own, I have to call the police in order to have a police escort, if I want to go out in the streets of Beni Suef. The hotel manager also does not understand what is going on, and why does the police do that. I finally understand that the police harasses me to make give up on the idea to cycle across Egypt. Nothing makes sense, but I can't do anything against the arbitrary rules set up by the Egyptian police, so I decide to give on cycling in Egypt.

You are not making bad publicity for Egypt as you said, it's the Egyptian authorities that are making bad publicity for themselves. As a fellow 'free spirit' I really feel sad for you. I would be tempted myself to get the Sudanese visa and continue on your journey south.
    Safe travels, inshallah.

You have all the right guys to be scared of going to Egypt, but as he mentioned you will not face these police behaviors as long as you are in one of the tourist spots and Hurghada is one of them, I assure you that you will have fun there. Remember that they spotted him when he crossed the first checkpoint in Dahab ... they were polite and friendly to get information regarding his trip. Go to Egypt you will enjoy it that's a totally different situation!!!

I had a terrible experience in Egypt as well. In 2007 I visited Egypt and was decieved by a crooked man who pretended to work in the same hotel I stayed. I ended up paying about $50 for some clothes and painting, he took me to few shops and every time he told the shop owner is my brother. I went to the pyramids by taxi and was stomped by horse owners, guides, beggers and policemen asking for money. I was carrying AU$6,000 but pretended to be an Iraqi refugee (I'm an Iraqi born Australian citizen). Someone was smarter than me and politely offered me his horse just for a photo. As soon as he took the photo he turned into a completely different person demanding big amount of money yelling at me "You think you can ride my horse for free? You have to pay 60 Egyptian pounds". I ended up paying. At the airport while waiting for my plane's boarding I ordered a cup of tea and a bottle of water. I was treated like a criminal by an extremely angry and ugly man in his 40's or 50's. He demanded payment either in Egyptian pound or American doller. I told him I have neither but I can pay by credit card or Australian dollar. He nearly had a heart attack because he lost a tea bag and little bit of milk. He snatched the water bottle and the cup of tea off my hands and demanded me to leave. I'm sure if the same thing happens in any place in Iraq they would've told me "Don't worry about it just enjoy your drink and make yourself at home".
I'm not saying all Egyptians are bad but I personally will never go to Egypt again.

When a foreigner hears the word " Arabic Republic of Egypt", he thinks that there is a democracy in this country, but the only thing that actually exists is a dictatorship. Those who were supposed to work for their people took power and only served their own interests and their party. Republic in 90 percent of countries of the world means modern dictatorship. But I hope that many good things will happen to you from today onwards, so that the bitterness of these events will be removed for you

@@ahmedkr5537 you are partially right. There is no rule of law and if the higher ups say something then it goes without questioning it. Same thing in courts. If a higher up wants this case to go a certain way then they will call the judge presiding over the case and tell him what the verdict should be. It’s that simple. However the authorities do still take bribes. For example, let’s say an officer got an order from the higher ups to release you. They won’t release you or will play around until you pay them to release you even though the officer has orders to let you go. That’s how they work. That’s how they get bribes. It’s corrupt and worse than North Korea.

There are many stories like this one, where police made the problem for a tourists and demanded money for different reasons. Especially if they see cameras, which gives them excuse to extort money. In your case it is a bike. There is a concern for safety I am sure, but also seems that Egypt government have a secret or two to hide and don't want you to video them. I watched travelers/hitchhikers getting escorted by the police through Baluchistan in Pakistan because it is dangerous part of that country (kidnappings and similar) but police was friendly and didn't ask for any money, but also didn't let the guy travel alone.

I recommend you to delay your around Africa journey, because it could be more worse than Egypt, with the economic and geopolitical issues around the world things could escalate to war zones or something like that very quickly especially in Central Africa Sudan Somalia and Ethiopia, maybe South and North are quite safer.
