  • In this video we discuss all the things to consider when buying firewood. Like is the firewood seasoned? How much wood are you actually getting, how much is a full cord of firewood, What type of wood are you buying? Red Oak, Cherry, Hickory? It takes lots of equipment to produce big quantities of firewood like compact tractor, chainsaw, log splitter and other things. For some people it makes more sense to buy their firewood if they don't consume large amounts. Maybe this video will help them when choosing a firewood supplier.

    In New Mexico we'd take the truck up on one our mesas and back up to the dead fall. Our most common wood was Pinon or Cedar. The pinon burnt fair but the cedar was aromic and delivered a hotter fire. We would burn a bit of coal on a winter night to hold a fire for a slow burn all night allowing good embers in the wood stove the next morning. On the truck we'd haul the dead fall broken up. We had a large circular saw powered via belt to flywheel of the tractor. So, we cut logs up for fireplace and wood cooking stove. We used a couple bob tail loads of wood thru the year. Good video.

    Also if someone is selling it by weight there is a difference between fresh cut and dry and burning wet wood is very toxic although hard to light. Very informative Mike, thanks again.

    Happy Easter. Before moving to Colorado I lived in upstate NY where we had a ton of ash trees. I liked that because they had fewer limbs and splitting was easy. Cherry was nice but was a lot harder to split as I was splitting by hand all the time. Out here we no longer have a fireplace just a firepit in the yard so I purchase oak by weight from the landscape supply place but I only need enough for the occasional pit night. Miss the days of cutting wood though.

    Mike you should do a video on timing how long it takes to stack your firewood into the trailer vs. tossing it into the trailer. See if you can get more volume per hour either way. It just might surprise all of your viewers.

    Great video. Good example of how much wood in a load. We get our wood in log length and they usually sell in 8 cord loads. You have to really watch the load though as you rarely get a full 8 cord. Happy Easter.

    Good info. I used to sell firewood by the truckload to avoid the arguments with buyers. (2 people can stack the same load of wood and come up with a different measurement depending on how tight or loose you stack.) I would give my buyers the dimension of the dump body and let them decide. In the end everyone was happy and we avoided the conflicts.

    I've stacked face cords many times to show it's a true face cord then tossed them in my 8 ft bed it all goes in nice so I end up tossing in about 1 more row to give it a nice rounded looking load never any complaints. Also there isn't much call for home heating wood down here in Fl so I sell what I call campfire wood not as dry about 6 months split and its ready to go when the snow birds come down. Oak is king down here also . Really like your vids Mike.

    Mike, I like how you rake and overseed after you stacked your wood. You are a great steward of your land. And for a point of reference, we have red oak, rock maple, beech and cherry here in NH. We also have yellow and white birch and locust wood. All hardwoods with some better than others. White birch is nice in the fireplace but I like oak, maple and the locust wood to heat the house.

    • @ryerob741
      @ryerob741 3 роки тому

      birch is nice but burns like poplar..."Gopher wood" lol....always going for more...locust wood is a MOFO its the hardest wood ever...heavy like willow...
      we have a lot of chinese elm but it don't smell good when burning...some beech here in michigan, I like beech, I've grown into a mulberry tree lover....it gives off mysterious colors as it burns, blue...purple...green but its always small spits....and tons of pulp wood here that is just to scrubby to try to split up...we dont save any pine/conifer for firewood or even campfire wood...

    Buying dry firewood? Such a slippery slope. I started burning around 20 years ago and NEVER had a good experience with buying dry firewood. Like almost everything else, I learned how to do it myself. Like you Mike, I love everything about getting the firewood myself. There are great suppliers out there like you Mike, but there are also a lot of shady suppliers too. It's tough to find a good one. My advice to a new burner is to ask around and everything you said. Great info. BTW, it's snowing here Monday morning. All the old snow had just about melted and now looking at around 3-4" and counting. Kids have a 3 hour delay so at least I get to spend the morning with them. Come on sun!

    You might mention if they find osage, hedge apple, bo dart to burn it burns really hot and it might harm your stove or grate and it throws sparks like crazy when you open the stove door. It does burn great but you just about need like a coal stove with fire brick and have it fireproof around the door for the sparks.

  • @paullloyd-jones3282
    @paullloyd-jones3282 3 роки тому

    I didn't read all the comments, and I'm sure someone has mentioned this, but a cord is a measurement of volume. You will fit more wood into a 128' space if it is organized (stacked) than if it is unorganized ("tossed"), but you're not being cheated if someone truly fills up 128 cubic feet of space with tossed wood and sells it to you as a cord. 128 cubic feet of stacked 16-18" wood will take up about 180 cubic feet (40% more space) if tossed into a space. By the same math, 128 cubic feet of tossed wood would stack out to about 91 cubic feet (about 29% less space), but it is not a perfect science. You could, however, just ask, when buying your wood, whether the wood will stack out to a cord, or whether it is a cord of loose or "tossed" wood, and know that if it is tossed, you are getting about 29% less wood so that you can compare it to the cost of the guy who is selling it to you as a stacked cord. For example, if the tossed cord is $300, know that it would be the same as paying $420 for a stacked cord. If the stacked cord is $300, know that it would be the same as paying $213 for a tossed cord. Maybe the math is hard, but you will get further knowing what a cord actually is, than you will accusing someone of trying to cheat people-- whether it's true or not. Suppliers can charge what ever they want for a cord of wood; just make sure you know how to compare apples to apples.
    Great video! Thanks Mr. Morgan!

    Hey Mike very good video. Amazing the difference in the 2 piles. I usually prefer to buy my wood stacked so I can see how much I'm getting. Always suspicious of sellers who bag it or have it in loose piles. Red Oak not as common in my area lots of Ash and Sugar Maple.

    • @ryerob741
      @ryerob741 3 роки тому

      here in southern michigan, our ash trees are all but gone due to emerald ash borer....we still have many varieties of oak, even though we have a bad situation with oak wilt...so now its come down to hardwood maples and nut tree varieties...hickory, butternuts ect...and maybe basswood...fruit trees such as apple and cherry are hard to come by and we reserve it for folks that do a lot of smoker burning, our small dump trucks that hold about 6 cu.yrds of bark mulch...hold approx. 3.5 "face" cords of split wood

  • @whasumara73
    @whasumara73 5 років тому +1

    I live in the Midwest, and I just had a dead Ash cut down. I got a full cord. It was standing dead for a couple of years. The bark came off naturally. I checked the moisture content with a moisture meter, and it's between 13% and 20%. I love the smell of Ash burning, and I would like to sell a couple of face cords; but I don't know about purchase practice in this business. If I have a buyer, do I get paid first or do I get paid after the wood is loaded? I would feel better if I had money on hand :), but I don't know if it works that way. Thank you for the video and for sharing your knowledge -Joseph

    Most sell facecords around here. A facecord is a tossed in heaped up short bed truck(6 ft bed) The price per cord should be cheaper than a facecord. Bulk is usually cheaper. Every seller says its dry but most is fresh split. I split stack and dry all my wood.

  • @lostnation5348
    @lostnation5348 6 років тому

    I always figured that tossed wood was about 2/3 of the stacked volume. So we are pretty close. I only sell firewood that is stacked. When people look at the pile before the pay the money, they are much happier and no one can question me.

    • @Chuck88keys
      @Chuck88keys 6 років тому

      Actually a full stacked volume of split wood loses between 25-30% because of the air space, so 75 percent of 128 equals out to 3/4 of a cord. when thrown into a truck loosely.You are cheating YOURSELF.

    He's INCORRECT.A cord of wood is 128 cu ft "of wood" He said "No matter what the configuration the wood is stacked, that automatically makes it "a cord" No way Jose. There's only one way and the most accurate to stack and see if it measures 128 cu ft According to CT firewood must be stacked with pieces "all facing the same way and fit as closely as possible" The sellers always say "4 x 4 x 8 is a cord BUT most of the time they just don't give you a full cord, but more like 3/4 of a cord. That is NO lie.
    Be leery of those who do NOT deliver wood that is stacked in the truck. They wil always tell you they "measured it before hand" When wood is just thrown in any space, 30% or that delivery is just that.......Air space. so you only get 70-75% of a cord.
    BE WARY when told "it's ready to burn". Like he said, when you get a delivry, split open one or two pieces and check the internal ( fresh split ) moisture". Not ready to burn ( correctly ) if it's not 20% moisture ( lower to as much as 11-percent is even better, especially with the very dense woods like oaks and hickories. Another good hint. Many sellers deliver wood in what is called a " 10-yard dump truck. There's 27 cubic feet to a cubic yard, so 10 x 27 = 270 cubic feet It takes 180 cubic feet "of space" to get a full cord in there thrown loose. Also the fact that when loose, you lose between 25%-30% because of all the space between the pieces. So let's add it up.a 10 yard dump holds 270 cu feet of DIRT, or Sand, Or bubble-gum ( haha ) If NOT stacked, the most that firewood NOT stacked in that truck is 180 cubic feet into 270 cu ft of SPACE goes 1.5 TIMES, so at most you're getting 1 1/2 cords of wood right? WRONG! Don't forget about that 25_30% "loss" because of all the spaces between the pieces, so now we take the 1.5 cords ( maximum ) and multiply by .75 percent Now you're DOWN to a grand TOTAL of 144 cubic feet of wood but you're paying for 256 cubic feet. Therefore, you're getting nowhere what you paid for. It happens ALL the time and they get richer every day. I will admit though.........This VIDEO is VERY HONEST and 95% accurate. My experiences? How about heating with wood since 1974, the year after the Ice storm in Connecticut of 1973. I hope my extended comments cn help someone out there.

    We burn "candles" in our fire place but firewood is very available here in Minnesota. Some day could you give a little advice
    about chimney inspection? Do you look for a contractor that is certified someway. What should he / she be looking for?
    We had a chimney / tuck pointer and he noticed the tan ceramic liner at the top was cracked and took care of that. He did notice the chimney was clean a whistle which it should have been because we have not had a fire in it for 25 years. He was called because when we had a new roof installed when they tried to do the flashing again parts of the outside brick came away with the old flashing. The brick contractor always takes over to correct the chimney problems. The roofing company returns and completes the flashing.

    Hi Mike quick question. Why do you tow your trailer from the three point and not from the draw bar? It seems to move around a lot without one of those stabilizers that ties in the top link.

      Didn't have a 2" ball with correct shank size for draw bar, now I do, before I take it in the woods I will swap it

    You said "different woods have different BTUs"......nope.....ALL wood have right at the same BTU value PER POUND. The reason some woods like hardwoods have a better fuel value is due to the density.....more weight per same volume. Since wood is sold by volume (should be by the cord, or fraction of ), there is more fuel value in buying high density woods like oak/hickory compared to soft maple or yellow poplar or most pines. IF wood were sold by weight (and the moisture content was equal), it wouldn't matter.....except you'd spend more time feeding the fire, since stoves contain a fixed amount of volume to stick the wood IN.

    The folks I buy from being it on a dump truck, dump and stack and I see it before paying. I get some cured and some green. We have red ends white oak. In 6 feet 2 in, and it ends up being up to my shoulder and over ten feet long. So, I'm happy.
    Do you know why it's called s "cord".
    Thanks for the video.

    I just bought a Cord of Oak. Seller says it's seasoned. But I notice that when burning in my wood stove, it doesn't really produce a flame. The wood just burns and looks like got coals. What am I doing wrong?

    Here in Australia, REDGUM is our premium firewood. We buy it by the cubic meter (1/3 of a cord aprox) and that will set you back between $160 to $200 depending on your area. The alternative is "bush wood" which is mixed spcies, usually eucalypt, ash, wattle. That runs around $100 to $120 per cubic meter..... So, the conversion in the US would be to buy 1 cord of Red Oak for $414 USD!!!
    So anyone here willing to pay $414 for a cord of wood??? 😂😂😂😂🇦🇺🇺🇸🇺🇸🇦🇺

      Drys very well, it gets covered about a month before it's time to use it. Full cord around here is 250, many people buy 1/3 for occasional burn for 100

    hello mr. morgan I would like your two cent on something. I'm from central pa So I got the same types of trees here to. Mostly red and white oak, cherry, maple and some hickory. I got a lot of dead trees on my land. I was think about making a few of them road side camp firewood stands. but I was thinking about selling it by the piece. I think it would be easyer way to do it. I was gone to split to a reg size something about the size you cut it. Just cant settle on a per piece price. Im think 25 to 50 cents per piece. Whats your thoughts. thanks

      Heavy Metalworks find out my many pieces fill a cord and divide the amount of wood by the cord cost around you. And maybe bump the price up 20-30% since it’s sold my the piece and not bulk.

      I suggest you sell by the bundle but tie it up. (essentially an arm load or about 1.5 cubic feet or approx 1/80 of a cord). This equates to a small camp fire for several hours at a camp site. If you sell for $4 a bundle that works out to $320 a cord. I suggest you put about 10 bundles by the roadside with a good sign and a strong box for them to drop off the money. It totally depends on the honour system but if this works for you then you don't waste time waiting for or servicing your customers.

      Sir, Information about all the various kinds of firewood and their burning properties are in ‘The Firewood Poem” by Lady Celia Congreve [written in the thirties sometime] she has a very good word for ash logs of which you seem to have an abundant supply for the future . She says at the end of the poem that it is good enough for a king to warm his slippers by, [apparently]. Regards, Rich.

    • @edsmith4414
      @edsmith4414 3 роки тому

      A face cord is a meaningless term. IF I cut my wood 8" long, I can stack it 4' high and 8' long, the "face" of a cord and call it a 'face cord'. (and get TWO of them in a truck ) But there is only 21 cuft of wood there (128cuft in a cord). If I cut it 12", same appearance, and I could call it a face cord, but now it's 32 cuft.......1/4 of a cord. Cut it 16" in length, and now you have a 1/3 of a cord. Cut it 24" and now you have a 1/2 cord. BUT all of those are technically "face cords"......so it means nothing. Sell by the cord, or some fraction of a cord. Actually the ONLY legal way to sell wood in some States.

  • @mitchdenner9743

    I agree with everthing you said except the criss cross stacking on the ends, yes it helps hold the pile up but the consumer is losing wood when it is crisscross stacked like that. All wood should be stacked tightly lengthwise. Also i was told by the department of weights and measures in my county that anyone selling firewood should give their customers a numbered reciept with the amount of wood purchased and the price. Otherwise the consumer has no proof or recourse against a seller if there is a discrepancy in quantity. Where i live a seller can get a 100 dollar fine for each infraction or rule not followed when selling firewood.
