A good tip to make all that awareness EASIER-- is an old martial art trick- called SOFT EYES.. your eyes take in pretty much everything- and your mind catches what you FOCUS on--- but if you want to be situationally aware- use "soft eyes"- and DO NOT focus on one thing specifically-- but take in the situation like scanning the ocean when out at sea-- sailors do NOT look AT the horizon- but above it.. same in this-- don't focus ON the items in front of you but just look "in general" and see everything.

I would like to add that as a woman living in a high crime city and having worked in high tech I was taught what to do while driving as well…. Be aware of leaving distance between bumpers don’t roll up so close to the car ahead that you cannot pull around them should an emergency arise. Also as a self defense person. Stay aware of vehicles that may be following you. If you suspect your being followed go to a police substation… or another Public place. Don’t head home. If your being followed or stalked then they will know where you live! Stay safe out there Ladies and Gents! Thank You She Defends Herself this lady Loves your content! 🌸

Decades ago when a field employee of HP, we were provided with a company car. Before we drove away, we were given a short driving lesson by a pro in the back lot of our building. He specifically taught us about NOT stopping right behind the car in front of us for the exact reason you mentioned: it prevents you from maneuvering should there be a reason to maneuver quickly out of the area. Good tip that I have always observed since that training. AND like she said in the video: ALWAYS lock your car as soon as you get into it.

Don't just shrug it off like oh I'm just in my head, always take it to be real. Whether something happens or not we get those feelings for a reason and its best to be mentally and physically prepared when you need to be. Sure has worked in favor for me.

While I've had my own experiences with it, i haven't had any that memorable.

Yep, and be wary of any car with a driver or, especially with a few people in it
just sitting there idling. I once parked my car and just felt odd about an idling car a few spaces over. So, I walked toward the store, then doubled back down another
row to find the people who were in the idling car trying to break into my car.
Beware of what I call 'headlight idlers' who sit in a car in a parking lot idling
away for no reason. Yes, they may just be waiting for someone, but all too often
they are waiting for an opportunity to break into your car.

    • @karenhooser6385

Great start... also, look under your and adjacent vehicles.
If possible, park your car so when you get ready to leave you drive out instead of backing out [it's called "combat parking"].
Always a great idea (especially) for the ladies, get some form of 'close quarters training', Krav Maga, Brazillian ju- jitsu, mui thai, tai kwon do.
If ever in a fight, do your best to NEVER go to the ground and be on your back, hard to throw a "powerful" punch up from there. Go for the eye's!
If attacked do not scream HELP... *SCREAM FIRE!
And then squeeze that trigger*. Hope you've practiced your "double taps"
Well, you [warned] your attacker when you said "fire".
Oh, train with your weapon often as possible and in various conditions/scenarios... left/right hand, even the variety of clothing and shoes you wear.
Keep 'em in the 10 ring!

Yes on the ground is bad however I have saved my own a** using the power of my thighs to punch my legs at the sucker enough that they were stunned/dazed and I could get away. In an emergency situation every inch of your body has to become a weapon and needs to be furled as such.

What really gets me are the people being in such a hurry who pull their cars into a parking place in a crowded lot, turn off the engine, pull the keys out of the ignition and just get out of the car without looking around to see what is around them. This irks me to a point like I cannot even describe! Such people deliberately place themselves in the middle of an environment that they are not prepared to immediately deal with if a danger were in fact present. It only complicates matters further when the AC is running and accompanied by music! But the people just pull into that stall and out they come with reckless abandon! Parking garages are the absolute worst!

Retired Special Forces Team Sergeant here. Good video. Here is something else for you to do. When you pull into a parking space and stop turn your front wheels to the right. If confronted by an attacker at your window simply reverse out and the car will run them over. Try it with a cardboard box next to your door for practice. Another tip is put I love my German Shepherd/Pitbull etc sticker on your car with tinted back window and rear side windows. Trust your body....if the hair is sticking up on the back of your neck, thousands of years of survival instinct is telling you something ain't right! Next time you are at Target buy the biggest dog water bowl and bone you can find and leave it by the front door, even meth heads don't want to tangle with 42 teeth and 18 claws. Don't have a security system, buy a sign on Amazon and a fake camera. If you live where you have a lot of sunshine get some solar powered motion sensor lights, all you need is a screw to install, no wires. Where their is no sunlight ie pergola entrance like I have, buy a battery operated motion detector light.

Situational Awareness is SO important! I live in a city with college town and I cringe whenever I see a pretty young co-ed walking, jogging, or riding with earbuds in! They might as well be wearing a shirt that says "take me, I'm yours!". Many of these tips apply to driving as well and would prevent so many traffic accidents! The one about looking for the exits is similar to one I was taught when I first started driving, always allowing yourself space for an escape route if a car veers toward you. Everything you shared is applicable to every single person out there, and this should really be taught in school. The fact you carry changes only your response to a threat, the SA can help prevent the need to respond at all! Great job Stav!

Stav, One especially dangerous place is the gas station. A number of years back I was living in Houston (after we had CCW); there was a gang that specialized in stealing cars from people (mostly women) by waiting for a car to pull up to the pump; they would then approach from the rear driver side quarter; if the window was down or the door open they would shoot the driver in the head; roll the body out and drive away. The took advantage of drivers fiddling around to find wallets or whatever walking through their blind spot. Totally ruthless. Don't just drive in a place similar to that without surveying who is there, where they are and their body language. Head on a swivel not eyes in your lap. You may also redeploy your weapon for faster access. Really good video as always!!

The tip about using the windows to is something i learned to do long ago. It's a really good tip! I would add that when walking at night, you could also use the lighting to try and pick out shadows that move underneath cars or behind cars or around the corners of buildings. That way you can "see" someone or an animal is there without actually seeing it. If someone is hiding out looking for a victim, you'll see their shadow first and you'll know to keep a distance be ready for anything that comes.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed Рік тому

If you're walking at night, it's a good idea to have a flashlight in your hand, or at least somewhere you can quickly deploy it. I always have one clipped on my pocket. You can leave it off, but if something doesn't feel right you can quickly shine a bright light at it. Where I live, I'm probably shining a light at some raccoon or opossum sniffing around my chicken coops, but city folks or even surburban folks might end up scaring off a larger predator of the two-legged variety. Somebody who means you harm at night is looking to ambush somebody and get away unseen. Getting a bright light shined on them, followed by a confident and stern "stop" behind that light, they've certainly lost the element of surprise, and that might very well just be enough deterrence on its own. If somebody doesn't stop, then you've accomplished identifying your target, and established that force might be necessary. Weapon lights are good, but having a light separate from that which you can use to look around, while your gun stays in its holster, is generally a good idea. I think of it like the floodlights I have around my home, on motion sensor. Anybody comes in range (it's always deer, lol) the whole outside of my house lights up like a Christmas tree. Somebody trying to get in has to know that they're going to be seen the whole time they're figuring out their best way in. And if I'm coming home at night, when my vehicle gets into the driveway I know for sure nobody's lurking around there in the dark and nobody's recently gone inside.

Excellent tips! RECOMMENDATIONS: (1) Instead of Pom pepper spray, carry Sabre Red Crossfire OC stream. It’s just as effective, but the Crossfire version allows the canister to discharge the OC while the canister is held from any angle. The Sabre Red MK-3 canister also contains a greater volume of OC. (2) Clip onto your clothing (e.g., a belt loop or draw string) a She’s Birdie personal safety alarm. When activated, it will emit a 130 dB siren and a flashing strobe light. (This should be a “must have” item if you like jogging alone through the woods.). 👍

Another safety issue unrelated to guns: My aunt is very short and pulls the seat of her car very close to the steering wheel. During an accident, the airbag deployed and stuck her from the bottom of the chin--pushing it up. This caused her head to over rotate backward and hurting her cervical spine. She recovered. What has she done since? She has gotten pedal extensions for her car. Now she can sit at a safe distance from the wheel (which IS adjustable / telescopic).

All great tips, and these things become second nature over time. One thing that makes women so vulnerable is their obsession with their phone. A predator will pass on a woman who is aware, because the easy targets are everywhere. One bitter subject for some people is whether you have an obligation to be a hero. You should think about this before the question clouds your judgement during an event. For me personally, my training and preparedness is only for myself and those in my party.

Totally agree that locking the doors of the car immediately after entering the car is being very proactive and safe. I once had a guy jump into the back seat of my car soon after I got in my car because he thought I was the Uber ride he was waiting for. It was dark and rainy and he obviously mistook my car as being his ride. It was a very intense situation when it initially happened because I pulled my Glock 19 on him and he freaked out. Fortunately for both of us it was just an innocent mix up that could have gone bad very quickly had cooler heads not prevailed.

Good tips. Ive been to some dangerous countries and havnt had a major problem. Its so important to watch peoples eyes and being aware of people around you like you expertly mentioned. If your walking down the street and you see someone looking at you its best to look in their eyes for a second and let them know you are aware of them. Its not in a threatening way. When people are up to something they will start glancing at eachother and you should be watching and notice them. And when they see you are aware they will likely let you pass and wait for someone with their head buried in their phone. If you have kids you should be aware of whos watching you and around you and following you. I live in a small town with our shopping centers next to the interstate and criminals like these areas because their is nice people here and can snatch someone and be 20 miles down the road and change cars before the cops are even called.

I only use ATM machines that are built into the wall of a bank. As I approach I make sure all windows are up, all doors locked. Circle the building slowly looking for hiding places. Pull up to the ATM / wall so close to it that the skinniest person won’t fit between my vehicle and the wall. If I’m on my motorcycle I park it to the right side of the lane (6 to 8 feet away from the ATM) and quickly get off of the bike to deal with the ATM while my helmeted head is constantly scanning. Sitting on a non- moving motorcycle is a vulnerable position to ambush. If this all sounds paranoid to you then you don’t know anyone who has been killed at an ATM.

I do carry everyday, my wife is afraid of guns, afraid to go to shooting range, afraid to hold it, even tho her dad was in the army for years. I've seen her many times not paying attention on surroundings, I ask: "did you see that old couple in the car waiving to our daughter and smiling?" she responds as, which couple which car when? ugh. My eyes are around everytime we go somewhere, but I wish my wife could pay more attention to surroundings too, especially when our year and a half daughter brings so much attention to strangers.

Good advice as always. Watching the hands is first, then I like to scan waistbands to see what someone might be carrying. As a martial artist, I also learned not to watch the eyes once a person got close because a good fighter will fool you with his eyes. A loose center mass focus will let you see from the toes to the forehead & body position will tell you as much as the eyes but with less chance of deception.

@@jeffgreer198613 Yeah, just keep reinforcing it. Have her count exits when she goes into a room. It'll become second nature to always look for them. Have her count how many people are wearing t-shirts, vs. button shirts, like it's a game. Keep it fun. How many hats? Does she know without having to look around again? How many people with glasses? Are there more men or more women? Have her point out fire extinguishers and AEDs, too. When she gets older, and understands more about the world, she'll already have those built-in observational skills, and can apply it to other things. And kids learn by example. With mine, I just sort of talk about what I'm seeing, what I'm thinking, just in daily life as we go around, and I include those sorts of observations I'm making to keep us safe and able to best respond to things. That way they know I consider it important to notice stuff like that. They hear me say it, see what I'm looking at, and remember all the other times I did the same. When they notice things before I do, and mention it, they get rewarded with praise at having beaten me.
We're homeschooling, so this is a 24/7 kind of thing for us. When we go camping, we talk about navigation, how not to get lost, how to survive if we do. How important fire safety is, and how to put one out, while we're at the campfire. In the kitchen making meals, we talk about burns and how to treat them, or how to stop a bleed if we cut ourselves with a knife. We talk about the Heimlich maneuver when we're eating our lunch as a family, and CPR is a natural progression from that, as is bursting out singing "Stayin' Alive" as a family (which is the right tempo for chest compressions, by the way). There's always things to learn, that can help them be safe, be aware of their surroundings, and what to do in an emergency. The most valuable skill in an emergency is remaining calm, and calmness comes from knowing what to do. When people don't know what to do in an unexpected situation, they panic, and make bad decisions. I can't shield them from every danger, and leave them ignorant and vulnerable. I can just give them the confidence to handle those dangers, and prepare themselves for as many things as possible.

I have 3 small children. Thankfully with grocery pickup, we’re not in stores as often. But if we are, we have a routine every SINGLE TIME we are in public. Everyone sits (or rides on) the buggy in the exact same seats, and gets in and out of the van at the trunk area so one door is open and I’m in total control of each child.
Another thing about safety is, my children are well disciplined. They know they’re not allowed under ANY circumstances to argue, beg, have fits, walk away from me, or touch things when we’re out. Mama needs to be completely aware of our surroundings and on guard to protect them.
I don’t scare them, but it’s real. I see parents allowing their children to trail 6 ft behind them while looking at their phone and I’m terrified for that child!

I don't know why, but I always did all of these things, even as a kid. I always wanted the seat to watch people come in and out. As I got older, I mentioned this to my parents, and they were stunned that I was looking out for their safety like that. They never even noticed before that I always took the seat facing the door. In public my head is always on a swivel. I do look at reflective surfaces a lot. I always know where the exits are, and beyond that, I know which cardinal directions are where, like I'm some kind of homing pigeon. Always had a good sense of direction. I pay attention to landmarks, and how I've moved in relation to them. I know where I am, and where I need to go to get myself to my car, or get to home, or just get out. I always make note of where the exits are on the outsides of commercial buildings (those exit-only crash bar doors), as I'm going in, so I have some idea of where I'll be when I come out of one of them, and won't be disoriented if I do. I'll know what's around there, where that is relative to where I came from. And I always people watch. I feel it's given me a good understanding of human behavior, what kind of mood they're in, what sorts of things they're doing, and this naturally extends to assessing threats. I'm never the guy staring at his phone in public. I'm the guy staring (not in a creepy obvious way) at everyone else while they stare at their phones. Over the years, I've found that the number of people looking around, and noticing that I'm even there, has decreased steadily. People are really becoming so clueless. It must be so easy to be a pickpocket now, or some kind of stalker.

Then when I’m walking out of the store to my car I look under it while I’m a long distance away so it’s easier and less obvious. I read a news article that while a woman had stopped to get gas a man had climbed under her car to grab her ankles or whatever. The gas station attendant tried to warn her in a less suspicious way. The attendant told her, her card was declined. Being shocked she was then able to receive the message and was able to stay safe. So I always look now.

So many videos and "self defense" trainings for women are so BS for what women really need, but your video is one I'd recommend any woman watch! So many of the points you made I would've recommended too!!
    A few notes:
    1) Excellent job looking stylish while being fully equipped with your EDC. A lot of women are concerned about their looks or appearance, but your presentation shows how you can be fully equipped and not compromise your appearance.
    2) The tip I LOVE the most is using windows to be aware of your surroundings. I would suggest expanding that to using "reflective surfaces". I use any reflective surface to scan my surroundings. The window or door panel of a car, some building walls are nicely reflective with marble or granite.
    3) Great job not carrying you pepper spray, knife and gun in your purse/backpack. Too many women think they can get to their gun in their purse in time. Doesn't work with a criminal snatches your purse, now he's armed and you're not..
    4) I agree it is bad to advertise!!! Some people think advertising you may have a gun would be a deterrent and for some it's an ego thing, but it just gives away your tactical advantage. If a criminal doesn't know you are armed, he may underestimate your ability and you can counter-ambush. If a criminal does know you're armed, he may just straight up shoot you so he doesn't take chances and then he'll take what you have.

Love this Stav!! I have recommended your channel and videos to SO many friends.
I would love to know if you have any self defense tips for kids, or moms who are out with kids. It was my main reason to start carrying and definitely affects my choices and awareness when out and about.
We do some practicing with my kids and my gun so they know what to do if my hand is on it, and have some code words for our family. I would love to see any videos done by you or friends of yours (online or in real life) to address the unique aspects of self defense with and around children. Or tips to teach
children. I have seen enough comments on your videos to believe that there are many other viewers who would also appreciate that! Thanks Stav!
