    This may sound cold hearted but I decided a long time ago that my responsibility was to protect myself and my family. Just because I carry a weapon doesn't mean I'm in law enforcement...as you pointed out, many things can go sideways in a hurry!

      So glad you said this! And I don't believe it's cold-hearted one bit. Not telling anyone else what to think or do, but it's called SELF defense for a reason. You have a right to self-defense... NOT a right to be a hero.

      It's absolutely everyone's responsibility to protect themselves. We need to all remember this and stop apologizing for other people's possible discomfort. Just as I carry for bear protection, I also carry for protection from two-leggeds (humans). Never apologize for prioritizing your personal safety and well-being!

    Exercising a RIGHT requires responsibility. I've seen far too many folks get their carry permit and don't bother to train, or even think about how to responsibly exercise that RIGHT. Thanks for spreading the word and talking about "mental maps" and situational planning.

    We had a conceal carry person that ended up shot by law enforcement due to the fact that he actually shot the perpetrator but then picked up the gun that the bad guy had and police saw him with the the gun and thought he was the bad guy. This happened in Boulder, CO and they have since recognized that conceal carry guy as a hero. He saved lives and made one fatal mistake by picking up the perpetrators gun. Wife and I have talked about the active shooter. Her job is to first get clear of me and get safe. Then call 911 report the incident and give a description of me, height, age, hair color, shirt color, and say that I am armed and attempting to stop the threat(s).
    First aid. I’m already carrying more “stuff” than I want to. I suggest carrying and learning how to use a cravat / a triangular bandage. They are inexpensive and don’t take up much room. You can use it to bandage a wound, as a compression bandage, you can stuff it in a knife or bullet wound to slow bleeding, and you can use it as a field tourniquet. It would be to everyone’s advantage to take a good first aid class. Gun or not, everyone should carry a pocket knife - carry a knife save a life.

      Just so you know, when police get any sort of description from dispatch, if the dispatcher even does their job at all, the cops file that information away in their brains as "description of the perp", they don't have room for anything else in their brains. The information they need to be given is the description of the bad guy. And if you don't want the cops to murder you, you need to be physically gone from the scene of the crime by the time they arrive. They shoot everybody in these things. Anyone that moves. Bad guys, good guys, random unarmed bystanders, victims of the bad guy who are already dead and lying motionless on the ground, and even their fellow cops. The forensics reports on these things will shock you. You need to deal with the immediate threat as quickly as you can, disengage and get away as soon as you hear the first siren, and then if you feel like making a report to the police, call up your lawyer, and go into the station together and let your lawyer do the talking.

    I was a nationally cert. legal assistant & worked for several law firms as a paralegal & an investigator (criminal defense & civil). I also had my own private service co. I was authorized access to the county jail to meet with clients. I always had access to a firearm but did not always carry one. Not that I felt safer but that I felt less likely to use it. Family Law was more dangerous than criminal defense. Serving divorce, child custody, or child support law suits bring out the worse in people. At those times I just reminded the person that I was an "officer" of the court & not to make matters worse. You must use good judgment if you plan to carry.

    As an ex-LEO you bring up some very good points in this video. It is very important that in an active shooter situation police respond to any threat that is visible to them. As you mentioned, if you are involved in the active shooter situation the police will consider you the active shooter unless you make yourself known that you are not the perpetrator. One easy way is to lay down your weapon at your side or holster your weapon. Either way the responding officers will consider you a suspect until it is determined you are not. Always, always comply with the officers!
    One item you forgot to mention in this video but may have brought up in other videos is the trauma you will experience if you have to shoot someone and possibly take their life. That is something to consider.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed Рік тому +1

      @@reecewatson5311 Cops never give anyone a chance to comply before they fire their weapons. You see it on body cams all the time. They shoot first, and then as they're continuing to shoot repeatedly they'll scream things like "stop, police!" Police stop active shooters some of the time, but very often it's ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers that deal with it before they arrive. When police do arrive, they will generally shoot good guys with guns, unarmed bystanders who may or may not have already been made victims of the active shooter, and even other cops. Cops have a really hard time with IFF, and they're all very eager to pull the trigger, so they don't take a moment to think first. Ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers know they will be in a lot of trouble if they make a mistake, so they hesitate to shoot, unless they are absolutely beyond any doubt pointing their weapon at a bad guy. They identify first, then point, then fire. Cops just fire, pointing somewhere in the direction of whatever scared them, and let the CSI guys identify after.
      There's many cases of ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers responding to the same act of violence, all without knowing who each other are, and all of them independently identifying who the bad guy was, and never shot any of the good guys. That sort of thing happens a lot, but generally doesn't make more than the local news. But of course if good guys with guns were killing each other at these things, it would be international news and everyone would know about it and talk about it decades after every time gun grabbers want to pass a new law. And cops accidentally shooting the wrong people at these things is always buried deep. But if you dig into the medical examiner reports, you can find out just where all the cop bullets went, and they go all over the place. Into random bystanders, into other cops, into victims already lying dead from the active shooter, whatever they happened to be pointing their gun at when they unloaded the magazine in a blind panic. It's really quite shameful.

    Some very good points made here, and I hope the ladies will take your advice! On that first point, when you're involved in a shooting incident: *Don't have a gun in your hand when the police arrive!* Guys who carry usually use a holster, mostly in-the-waistband (IWB) for concealment, but sometimes outside the waistband (OWB), so it's fairly easy for them to re-holster their weapon (though they too need to think about this, and train to put the gun away after the threat has passed.)
    For gals it may be a lot harder, depending on how they're carrying. I know some women who carry in their chest area under their blouse, others who carry using a belly-band, some others who carry on their leg or under their skirt, and a lot of women carry in their purse (which I consider to be a bad choice.) So ladies, think about how you're going to put that gun away before a bunch of armed police, all on short fuses because they know they're coming to an active shooter situation, see you with that gun in your hand and shoot you!
    [Why I think purse carry is a bad idea: purses are often snatched, & there goes your gun; the bad guy is close, so you can't open your purse to get at your gun, & besides- if you're being robbed, he wants what's in that purse; you're threatened but your purse is on the desk/table/whatever and not near you; and the last reason is that it's impossible to have a fast draw from a purse. YMMV!]

      Dont be afraid to carry. You bought it for a reason. Watch a lot of videos “mistakes gun owners make”... some may resonate, some not so much.
      Take Sav’s online course, or better yet, take a local “defensive shooting” course. Some places also have a “ladies special” course.
      Get familiar with your state’s carrying versus transporting laws. Some may require the gun in a locked box or something if you dont have certain permit. If you get pulled over, turn off the car, put the keys on the dash & grip the wheel at 10 & 2 or make your hands otherwise visible. If the cop asks whether you have any weapons, obviously say “I have a valid permit & XYZ firearm”... or something like “I’m transporting XYZ gun to the range for practice”... DO NOT just reach for anything. Wait till its agreed upon that “I’ll be reaching for my license, permit, etc now”
      The most well-known “carry insurance” is USCCA. You can join with the link:

    Even the police mistake good guys/girls for the suspect. Good example is John Hurley in Arvada, Colorado who shot a active shooter who just murdered a police officer. Responding officer thought Mr. Hurley was the suspect and shot and killed him. Carrying a firearm is a huge responsibility and a risk. Train, train and train some more.

Clearing malfunctions. I belong to a woman's group that shoots once a month and it seems like if they have a problem with the gun they always call the instructor. STAV, GREAT VIDEO. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS KIND OF MORBID, BUT THE FIRST QUESTION I ASK ANYONE WHO ASKS ME WHETHER THEY SHOULD CARRY A GUN IS, "DO YOU THINK YOU COULD TAKE ANOTHER HUMAN'S LIFE ?" !!! IT'S AN IMPORTANT QUESTION AND, SURPRISINGLY, ONE I'VE FOUND MANY FOLKS NEVER ASK THEMSELVES, LET ALONE ANSWER. ONE MUST KNOW/ HAVE MADE THIS DECISION LONG BEFORE ONE STARTS THINKING ABOUT THE MANY OTHER QUESTIONS THAT WILL "APPEAR" BEFORE THEM. IF THEY HAVEN'T ANSWERED THIS QUESTION HONESTLY, THEY COULD FIND THEMSELVES DEAD LONG BEFORE THE ANSWER COMES TO THEM. DISTASTEFUL BUT NECESSARY. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND HAVE A SUSPICION THAT YOU'RE A WONDERFUL INSTRUCTOR. THANKS !!!!

    Hey Stav, I watch a lot of active self protection channel and one thing I've noticed is the police always always shout and call many times for people to "drop the gun" and only take the decision to shoot when the bad guy raises his/her weapon or decides to rush them, so my advice to anyone is if you hear a law enforcement officer shouting at you to drop the gun do so immediately and get down on the ground with your arms out to your sides!

    • @deniswauchope3788
      @deniswauchope3788 2 роки тому +2

      That's true, but the problem is that if you've had to shoot your weapon to defend yourself, you'll be deafened by the shots & you'll also be stressed out. Because of this, you (the victim) may see the police shouting, but you won't hear/understand what they're saying, and you won't be able to think straight. That's why training is the only answer here, everyone who carries must train so that they do the right thing (reholster or put down their gun safely, put hands up) without having to think about it.

    There's a full light trauma kit in the car, but there's an additional Stop The Bleed kit that lives on my range bag. Running back to the car could leave someone bleeding out, and if look around ANY range, you will probably not see any STB kit in sight. And if you put one together yourself, just beware that most or many of the discount tourniquets are counterfeits, reported to fail in use.

      Gun stowed hands on top of head in clear sight. If the officer says show me your gun. The answer is no tell them where it is located they can take it off your body. Our instructor shared a similar story. The individual complied with the officer request. The officer shot the individual.
      Same thing goes for in the car. We were instructed to place both hands on the wheel, inform the officer you have a concealed carry & ask how the officer would like them to proceed. Do not engage if the officer makes any provocative statement “why are you going to shoot me”. Keep hands on wheel…repeat…

John's (the cop) girl friend whispered to him, "John do something your a cop", he discretely hushed her and as the incident developed there was a second man PRE-STAGED towards the back of the bar, so at the end when the robber was leaving with his bag full of money the second dude pulled his gun and announced himself and drew his gun and left trailing the first man. Many things are replaceable your life or health (being shot and ending up in a wheel chair etc.) is not. So a jaundice eye when looking at things might be a good approach.

    The "carry first aid and bleed-control gear" advice makes a lot of sense. Not just for yourself, but for innocent bystanders. You might not be legally liable for injuries you cause in self-defense, but if you shoot at Mr Badguy and hit Miss Standingclosetohim, either instead or in addition, you're going to want to mitigate the harm you just caused to the bystander.

    It is great to see a young lady such as yourself preparing for these unfortunate outcomes of this world.
    First a little background about myself and then I will bring up another point that any carrier of weapons has to be prepared to deal with.
    I am 67 now, a Vietnam Vet ( I turned 18 there) and have been around firearms all my life, including selling them in shops and being a hunting manager at a now defunct store. There.
    Now then, when you carry a weapon you may encounter a situation where someone else tries to get ahold of said weapon. In that case unfortunately you may have to shoot them. You must always maintain control of your weapon. If this is something that you can not bring yourself to do then you should not be carrying any weapon. An unpleasant thought but you have to be ready to deal with it.
    My friends' son was a cop in Texas and had to shoot a man he was taking in for shoplifting. Ha had the man, he was taking him out to his police car- and the man went for his holstered weapon. All over a charge that he would have had to pay a $50 fine for. My friends' son agonized over this for awhile and I told him to tell his son to stop second guessing himself, the decision to shoot was valid, a good decision when he made it and it was good now. He was doing what human nature puts you through if you are not prepared to deal with it. It helped. A detective in his dept. told him the same thing. Great video, my dear. Keep it up.

  • @diggacha

    the main point I think supports all of yours is that your weapon is a tool for *your* defense including your loved ones. If there is an active shooter or robbery in a public place and you can get you and yours out safely long before you would be able to take on the shooter, that should be the priority. If you get involved as a bystander in a fight, you should call the police before confronting anyone and draw and discharge your weapon according to the threat level presented to you personally.
    Not legal advice, obviously, but I think this is could be an important thing to consider to make sure that you don't get treated as the bad guy in a situation where you're really trying to do the right thing.
