That tape will protect the insulation from sun damage. That’s the tape I use on my exterior water pipes and my HVAC refrigerant pipes.

Nice finished product! An easy way to make the elbow is cut insulation exactly at 45° and then twist the cut part to butt up against the other. Then cut to length.

Anytime you see a CA cancer warning, that means it's the good stuff. Doubly so if it says "not for sale in CA".

It’s a good idea toput your insulation several inches below the ground if you’re in the really cold weather area

That fat foam will allow AIR inside to increase the R value. Use the larger OD wrap. Doesn't have to fit like skinny jeans.

very helpful, i need to do the same thing..thanks for sharing..the only thing i think could be an issue is that my plumber was able to use a heat gun against my exterior pvc pipe to thaw the ice. If i use that heat wrap and pipe insulation, not sure he could use the heat gun at all..

Where you buy your foam, mhome depot and lowes dont have any big enough. Thei one inch size still too small for the pvc

You can also make an insulated wooden box to go over the pipes.😊

Your pipe insulation has a R value of 3!! At least put a thick tight wrap of newspaper as a base layer, then cover with the pipe insulation.

I have a tiny home that a handicap relative lives in. The plumbing runs the entire length of the building externally. No matter how tightly wrapped, they freeze and burst everytime there is a hard freeze in TX. I would be so grateful for recommendations on how to protect these long term, possibly in a way where I don't have to re-do it every year. Or just how can I insulate them well enough where they wont freeze. They are all PVC. Thank you

Thanks for watching. I'm sorry to hear that, but that is outside of my knowledge level. Hopefully you can find somebody to help you get that fixed so it stops freezing every year. Good luck and thanks for watching.

You could try using a different type of Pipe sleeve. They make ones for Pipes in commercial freezer that can handle negative 100° and self sealing. ( It's smooth black rubber like material)
They also make ones which have fiber glass in it and cover in silver wrapping.

@Sarah White Insulation alone won't stop the pipes from freezing. You'll need to install heat tape or heat cable.
Here's a link to a clip from a guy in Alaska. He shows how to install heat tape and insulation. He says he's had no issues with his pipes freezing at temps as low as -70F. ua-cam.com/video/0Aww50G0fSU/v-deo.html

We used heat tape to prevent pipes from freezing but the tape can only be used on metal pipe. It will melt PVC.

    The tape name?

10 millimeters? That designation is MILS. That's the thickness of the tape. 10 mils is not millimeters.

That's why I live in southern Arizona don't have to worry about freezing pipes anymore 🥺

LOL! California requires that "cancer warning" crap on EVERYTHING. If that's all it takes to scare you into needing gloves to handle...tape...then you might want to move into a hermetically sealed bubble.

he had the safety goggles on also in case the tape or foam explodes
