VH SS Group 3 HK HG HT were too slow at the time XU1 was lucky enough to get the perfect storm with the perfect driver to win a "Tom and Jerry" bathurst. Very overrated in my opinion. If there was ever a 6 cylinder going to be worth mentioning, it would have to be a VL Turbo 5 speed in any form. Even today they are over engineered.
Bought a new VL Group A Walky back in 89 and sadly only had it for a year. Now have near new 2017 VF SS-V Redline Supercharged and had a few nice Holdens in between. Love Holdens and wish we could still have them in Australia. With the developement Holden was doing, it would be interesting to see what they would have now. Ahead of their time imho.
Not many 5.6Ls made by HDT, but yes, it was an option, and I have one. The HDT blue was Holden’s regular VL colour called blue ice - not Panorama silver. Panorama silver lived on in the VN as azure (same formula, same code, different name)
You'd think LJ GTR XU-1 would rate. The only normally aspirated 6Cyl ever to win Bathurst. My '73 gearing broke Nat'l speed limit in 1st (115km/hr @7200rpm, LSD3.08:1ratio)!

I thought they made 22 Directors, When I was 20 I there was 1 for sale for $22K, One car I regret not buying was a VL Calais wagon with a turbo 6 for $10k.
G'day mate, do you have any articles or sources that point to the 20 builds? I have looked everywhere and could only find what I referenced in the video.
@@ClunieGarage no sources, that number was in a magazine back in 1995 so could be wrong but the car for sale said 1 of 22 at the time as well. Every source online says 9 to 12
@@JimBob-qh8gl yep that's what I thought. Maybe they planned the original run for 22 and pulled back. A bit like the original plans for the W427 and Monaro HRT 427
The real special modification that the VL Director was to have was independent rear suspension. That is what the falling out between Peter Brock and Holden was all about and not the Polarizer.
@@tomnewham1269 oh wow, I didn't know that. I have all the press articles and videos including from Mike Raymond that blame the fallout on the Polarizer.
You 4.9 litre 308 engine. Sorry, yes 4.9 was reworked from the 5.0l. The 4.9l is the 304. This size was developed so Holden could lose 500kg of weight. This was to compete with the turbo engine race cars. ❤😂🎉😊
I remember the Director/Walkinshaw commodores when new and even back than always thought that they looked overdressed. A bit like a fat opera singer past her age. The VL had a slick shape as standard and only needed a bit of finessing to really stand out in my opinion. For my bucket list a two door HQ Monaro with a 502, 5-speed and quick change rear would suit me fine Although an EH with a 327 with 3x2's, M21 and Halibrand Quick Change as my daily driver
Yep hard to believe hey? HSV had to detune it for warranty and ADR requirements from all accounts. Many built LS engines with aftermarket superchargers pump out more at the hubs or tyres than the GTSR-W1 but of course they don't have production law suits or red tape hanging over them. What are your plans for the VF? Track of Drag? Sounds like a serious bit of kit 🤠
I mean there’s one bloke who did nothing but change to a smaller pulley and throw bigger injectors and a tune on and it made something around 470kw at the wheel
Yeah and a 1978 460ci (7.5 litre) Ford Big Block made 120 kw from the factory , still smoked the rollers on the chassis dyno , in fact they could not strap it down enough to stop it spinning . That's Torque, the real measure of power , HP / KW is a made up number and doesn't really measure an engine , a D6 Dozer rated at 100 HP and a Kawasaki ZZR 600 again 100hp not for a minute would you call them equal in power.
