8:08 Well then, this Metal Gear is brutally honest. In the past games, you'd get some animal rank. If you did poorly, you'd get a rank like "sheep" or something. This one is blatantly stating "you suck."
If you play through all the VR missions it's revealed at the end of them that you were playing them as Raiden training for what happens in MGS 2 I think that's pretty sweet
You seriously have the best reviews. I work from my computer and I usually have a show or soundtrack playing while I work. Two weeks ago I binge watched all your reviews. Every one from SGB to Vs. You have outstanding content. Please keep doing what you do, Johnny. It's very much appreciated.
+SteamboShow Daw, give him a hug. =) Yeah I think what I love about the reviews is the fact Johnny doesn't look at them from any on technical or mechanical view point but as a neutral.
+SteamboShow If you like having a review as a backrground sound, try mathewmatosis`s. he did a couple of metal gear reviews that are long and chill to listen to
1:07 "sometimes I just wanna go back in time to tell my younger self to grab some of these old things when they released on the market." Me too John, (looks at prices for old Power Rangers Megazord toys on amazon and ebay) me too John.
+KidSnivy69 IKR? I mostly just want the megazords, but the morphers are still cool. I actually remember having Dino Thunder, SPD, and Mystic Force morpher toys myself when I was a kid. But they all broke or got lost, which really makes me sad. :(
Honestly, Metal Gear as a series has always been graphically impressive for their console generations. MGS 3 looks like it could have been released 5 years later and it almost wouldn't stick out at all. MGS 4 and especially V still look great in 2019, even though 4's framerate isn't too consistent.
serieusly johnny you deserve WAY more subs. enjoined watching you and your bros for about a year now. usualy dont like game revieuws but im always looking out for yours
This game looks and plays amazingly well on the Gameboy Color. It still surprises me of what that little system was capable of. (Cannon fodder's graphics OMG)
Finding out what happens at the end of Ghost Babel VR missions, we really did get a sequel to Ghost Babel & that was MGS2 since GB was VR missions for Raiden
I always tune out while Johnny summarizes the complex plots of the Metal Gear games. I can't even say that they're spoilers because I can't keep up with them, anyway.
The point of pressing up against a wall, is that if you press the Weapon Button, you can actually pan your view a little past the borders of the screen. Of course you can also knock on the walls to lure guards, but there were countless situations where that extra bit of viewing distance saved me from strolling right into an alert state. Those cameras are notoriously difficult to see on your radar, especially if you’re playing on vanilla hardware. I believe I was about 10 when I got this game, and despite having vision so good I could circumcise a gnat without magnification, I still could hardly see those damn cameras lol.
0:40 Oh, so that’s why the whole thing with the game’s Canonisity is in question now. The Writer for MGS2 must have really wanted to leave a hint for the next game. 2:00 Oh it was, Johnny. It really was… Also a very apt comparison.
I remember playing this game and loving the fact that it played so much like the Playstation version. That the game fit and played and looked the way it did on the Gameboy player was amazing. Looking back, I'm sorry I traded it in (like all of the games I traded, I'm slowly trying to get them back) and I agree that it's expensive and finding a reasonably priced cartridge is near impossible. Great review, sir!
So not only do we have a story full of plot twists and countless loose ends, we also got alternate continuities. Man, this game must've messed with people's flow charts, BIG TIME.
I see why you were wanting to split the video up but, your explanation is in this video and not the portable ops video. So in order for people to even know why you split the videos up, they’d have to watch this video anyway.
I have a European copy of the game, its called Metal Gear Solid, not Ghost Babel. I only learned of that name several years later. Fantastic game by the way.
I think this is better than Metal Gear 2 by a long shot, the characters while not extremely in-depth or elaborated, they were extremely flat and bland in MG2 so to be fair it’s a big improvement. I’ll admit MG2 does have the better soundtrack but Babel has more content,: well-translated VR Missions, fucking Multiplayer, a level select, all great things unheard of in some of the other entries.
Wait does this game have the child of Red Durathror and Black Dainn? Seriously the Owl one seems almost exactly like those two from Boktai. That and Slasher Hawk seems a wee bit like the Earth Warrior Cheyanne just replace boomerangs with axes.
I'm surprised this game hasn't been re-released on the Virtual Console at all. Maybe there are licensing issues or something, but I could see this among the other GB/GBC releases on the 3DS E-shop.
I JUST GOT BACK FROM WATCHING RWBY AND I REALLY NEEDED SOME JOHNNY HUSBANDO TALKING ABOUT METAL GEAR TRASH SO THANK YOU. *Clears throat* What I mean is.. Glad to see the video is up! Always a good day when I get to relax with your content :)
iplayunity south africa (yes thats what its supposed to be a map of) isnt an island .....no one even mentioned an island Where in the blue fuck do you get island?
I think you might be being s little bit too harsh on Black Chamber. You are reviewing it almost twenty years later where strong backstories (MGS '97 bring one of the first to do so) have become almost expected. For a kid playing this on a handheld, their backstories were great and interesting. Personal I loved blackhawk and Viper. I loved how he told of his comrades you never see or hear their names. It left it up to my mind to fill in the blanks. I'm sure if I was to play it now without the nostalgia, i probably would want more info as most games feel they have to give us all this information and we've become accustomed to it. I would have loved a sequel though. I remember thinking at the time that is love a game to play as the black chamber character but that was never gonna happen.
Johnny sounds surprised when Snake is the only person who doesn't die because he's the main character. It's not like they would just CHANGE the main character from Solid Snake or anything like that, right? That would be just silly
Might not be the best place to say this, and it has likely been said before, but considering how much you and the guys enjoy Smash you might want to look into Rivals of Aether on Steam. It's a $15 fighting game that plays incredibly similar to Smash. I assume it was made by fans of the series, which wouldnt surprise me at all. It's great fun and in Early Access at the moment. You can even use Gamecube controllers for the game if you have the usb adapter for WiiU or pc.
Honestly, since Konami is gonna be making more metal gear games, going with this alternate reality might be the best way for both newcomers and oldcomers to approach the series without having to worry too much about the continuity of the solid games as much (besides 3). This would also give respect to Kojima in that his story would be preserved in its own way and metal gear would be grown in its own way without coming across as stretching the continuity of the lore up to this point, and to not pressure newcomers to pick up 5 other games to understand the series as a whole. Of course they'll need to rerelease Babel on eshop, or possibly steam as a release or reimagining, so the new continuity doesn't come out of no where. And the best part is that since the whole Fox Die thing would never have happened, Snake would be usable in more than a few games without having to replace him in future titles, and if possible, not get to crazy deep in the lore as solid 2 onwards does, and...
...keep it simple enough to follow, but complex enough to keep things interesting in the grand schemes of that alternate continuity. And before anyone says how this wouldn't work, I can think of a few franchises that already do this. Zelda, Megaman, Mortal Kombat (sort of) and Final fantasy just to name a few, already do this sort of thing, so it can't be that hard to do the same for the Babel Timeline. Thoughts person who's reading this?
8:08 Well then, this Metal Gear is brutally honest. In the past games, you'd get some animal rank. If you did poorly, you'd get a rank like "sheep" or something. This one is blatantly stating "you suck."
+Pan Z LOL!
+Pan Z Kinda reminds me of the rankings in the Timesplitters multi-player. Pathetic shot, coward, hoarder ;-)
+Pan Z I got a rank "cat" in MGS PSX. In ghost babel, 70% of the time I got "terrible". That means I suck :P.
Status: FUCKING SICK
The codename ranking still exist. I just finished the game myself not even 5 minutes ago. It just happens to show up when you beat the game.
I'm just genuinely floored by how much content they seemed to fit into the cartridge
If you play through all the VR missions it's revealed at the end of them that you were playing them as Raiden training for what happens in MGS 2 I think that's pretty sweet

Welcome to the SomeCallMeJohnny fanbase!
+SteamboShow If you're interested in other reviewers that give actually reviews that actually analyze gameplay and story (like Johnny), I have a few.
+SteamboShow Daw, give him a hug. =) Yeah I think what I love about the reviews is the fact Johnny doesn't look at them from any on technical or mechanical view point but as a neutral.

"A huge climax that never happens..." Yeah, I know how that feels.
bro
this game looks reaaaaaaaaaaaally good for a game boy game.
You could tell me this was a GBA game and I would believe you
Metal gear games always try to look the best in their game console in competition of the other games.
Mgs 3 on the ps3 looks like it belongs on the platform.
That metal gear... Is gorgeous for Gbc.
WH250398 well that’s because mgs 3 was released for ps2
1:07 "sometimes I just wanna go back in time to tell my younger self to grab some of these old things when they released on the market."
Me too John, (looks at prices for old Power Rangers Megazord toys on amazon and ebay) me too John.
Same. Do you know how many Power Rangers morphers I wish I could get.
I could get Lego 2012 Tie Fighters for half the price. And a PS2.
+KidSnivy69 IKR? I mostly just want the megazords, but the morphers are still cool. I actually remember having Dino Thunder, SPD, and Mystic Force morpher toys myself when I was a kid. But they all broke or got lost, which really makes me sad. :(

PyroFinnTheManiac I was just relating
Woah, this game ,for the game boy Colour looks really good, with that fluid animation of snake and those cutscenes....
This game is pretty underrated. Although I hate that conveyor belt maze, lol
I would love to see Johnny covering the Boktai Series, or at least the first Boktai, since the game is pretty much Metal Gear with vampires :D!
I surprised you didn't mention the smooth as butter animations and the amazing graphics (for gbc of course)
Honestly, Metal Gear as a series has always been graphically impressive for their console generations. MGS 3 looks like it could have been released 5 years later and it almost wouldn't stick out at all. MGS 4 and especially V still look great in 2019, even though 4's framerate isn't too consistent.

Is it just me or does Viper's story sounds like Venom's snake story? Also he looks like the main character from Zone of the Enders 2

6:23 - 6:28 Viper is literally Venom Snake before Kojima came up with Venom Snake.
"Imagine Lord of the Rings with no Two Towers or Return of the King"
Dont need to ...thanks Ralph Bakshi
I didn't know Kris Jenner was in a Metal Gear game!
Metal gear predicted the future!
SO DOES THIS MAKE METAL GEAR GHOST BABEL STUNNING AND BRAVE!!!!
Shellshock24 Classic Games don’t bring that kind of shit anywhere near metal gear topics.
Jenner and metal gear needs to be FAR apart as possible.
This game looks pretty damn great for GBC. There's some good looking cutscene graphics and the overall animation looks pretty smooth.
I always tune out while Johnny summarizes the complex plots of the Metal Gear games. I can't even say that they're spoilers because I can't keep up with them, anyway.
4:15 Changing backstory makes this more of an alternate universe then an alternate timeline
Damn. The coverart for this game is amazing. Chris' design is pretty beautiful and it's a litte sad that it only gets used for this game.
Replaying this right now. Very cool review. And I hate that conveyor belt maze...
Chris Jenner you say?...conspiracies intensify.
"It's like I'm playing fukin Pac-Man" 🤣

damn this game looks nice
pretty good pixel art for a gameboy
the fact that theres a dog there is funny because outer heaven’s soldiers were originally of the diamond dogs

Damn! Just researched how much Ghost Babel costs and it was marked down from $127 to only a whopping $98. That is a pretty penny...
This was released a year ago, but it felt like yesterday. I'm only in high school and I still feel old.
*Playing KH 2 without even knowing of CoM's existence flashback is triggered*
I heard a noise in my room, I think it was a ghost babel-ing
Thank you Johnny for a good start to my evening
Dawww...that little dog head island is so cute!!!

You know, maybe it's a Fox Head. That'd be meta as shit.
thats actually a good question about the battery backs on gameboys

Ghost Babel was my first Metal Gear and I loved it. It is because of this game that I bough a PlayStation to play the original MGS1 at the time.
It'd be interesting if Konami decided to reboot the Metal Gear series by remaking this game and continuing its story line.
In two days this review will be a year old....
Time on write fanfic on this cool-ass Gameboy game. MSS: Ghost Babel 2
Two reviews in one day? It's Christmas...
The dogs in the bush maze reminded me heavily of RE4. I'm surprised you didn't use that comparison.
Don't worry, if Viper comes back his arm will revive him.
Wasn't Ghost Babel secret ending that it was a VR for Raiden?
Huh?
This won't be the last time Present Johnny would resent his past self (coughBrotherhoodcough)
Johnny vs. Fire Emblem. Oh, you thought the Metal Gear franchise was long...
it looks more like a howling wolf than a dog, really
It's a real shame this game never made it on a Virtual Console.
6:20 gee, where have I heard that one before?
This game is a VR mission. "lets see if Jack can do better"
I have never been interested in looking into Babel, but that story summary... Are we sure we aren't talking about the Opening to Sons of Liberty?
U can't see him! And his name is JOHN... parker.
Wonder if Ghost Babel could somehow the possibly retconned and worked into the main canon somewhere?
SomecallmeJohnny, I still really am anticipating your MGS4 review.
Bet that video is going to be at least an hour long.
+KidSnivy69 I'll bring the popcorn!

I have a European copy of the game, its called Metal Gear Solid, not Ghost Babel. I only learned of that name several years later. Fantastic game by the way.
Znakemaster yeah its called solid in the UK, but i think its called ghost babel in other places ...france, germany, italy ect
After seeing some gameplay from this game I checked out this review to see if it was a remake of the original MSX Metal Gear. It should have been.
I think this is better than Metal Gear 2 by a long shot, the characters while not extremely in-depth or elaborated, they were extremely flat and bland in MG2 so to be fair it’s a big improvement. Ghost Babel is Raiden's Similation.

I'm surprised there isn't a virtual console version of this game on the 3DS. Does anyone else feel the same?
I want to see a final fantasy marathon. No pressure, take your time, but please do a marathon.
Snake looks like Derek Zoolander on that gameboy color version...
Is there anything more to life than being really, really, really, ridiculously good at killing?
slasher hawk sounds like a megaman robot master does anyone else hear that in his name

German Version als also just called Metal Gear Solid. I played the shit out of it back then :D
hey Johnny why don't you use the gamecubes gameboy player adapter to record footage of the gba instead of looking for a rom?
